    (SHORTBOARDS):- I would suggest using a wider stance for shortboards. Most novice and intermediate riders I see use too narrow a stance. The back foot should land near the back of the pad such that the back of the arch support is cupped neatly in the arch of the foot. This wide stance may feel strange at first but it gives you much greater longitudinal leverage over the board. It also makes moving the back foot right against the back of the pad (for smahing a re-entry for eg) a small, easy adjustment. The back foot should only come to the front of the pad when trimming way forwards (eg for tube riding). The front foot can stay planted where it is all the time, just make sure that the placement is far enough foward to balance the back foot. Bending the both knees and slightly twisting the torso to face forward vastly increases the grip you have on the board and your overall stability.Yes it does feel alien at first but will open the door to more radical surfing.

    Packaging: It came in a sturdy rectangular cardboard box that said Yoga on it. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxZkaD2JsPC-fUMkF3vxJ2echoiXZ3T9aM I didn't like how it let possible package thieves know what might be contained inside but great packaging otherwise. The yoga mat came rolled up in a plastic wrap, which was fairly easy to remove.Contents: I got the green yoga mat and it came with an adjustable velcro carrying strap already secured to the mat. There was also a warranty card. There was a bit of a plastic smell coming form the yoga mat but it quickly dissipated after using it once.I've only used the yoga mat twice so far but I am loving it. It's such a game changer to my work outs, especially compared to my bed and floor, haha! I can confirm that it very thick, slip resistant, and comfortable. i didn't look at the dimensions prior to buying the mat, but it is so much longer than I expected! Width is normal size in my opinion. I don't know if it really is tear resistant yet... only time will tell!

    To truly practice the "pop-up" away from the ocean you really need to put the whole surface you are landing-on, on an unstable platform of some sort to replicate the instability of the water/ocean. The best way is to practice is in a pool if one is available IMHO. If you can master it in a pool its a breeze when you add the momentum of catching an actual wave. A bit like a pushbike. This fits in with the saying "to be a good at something you need to do that something regularly". Surfing is a skill and skills are only refined by practicing and locking in the fundamentals continuously. Once you have those fundamentals locked in through muscle memory your upward progress will be guaranteed.

      Informative video and such great advice! While waiting for waves at a beginner location, I paddled out, away from the crowd and started doing these pop up practices in the ocean. Make sure to be far enough away so that if you miss, your board doesn't hit anyone:)

    There is some great advice here and for the most part it's very good, particularly for beginners, However, the foot position is wrong. They are too square across the stringer and should be facing more forward down/along the stringer. Front and back knees should be able to bend more along the length of the board rather than across (the width). Feet more 35 to 45 degree to the stringer, not 90 degree. Other than that Practice improves performance in and out of the water. Enjoy the ride. 🤙

    The front foot should be angle so you can bend the back knee easily to the correct surf stance. With the back knee bend you can get more drive and speed.

    I’ve been trying to get back into surfing at 47 yrs old because I live at the beach now but I’m having a hard time with my pop up and positioning in the lineup so my ego has been brutally murdered . I use to surf pretty good in my 20s from hitting the lip ,hard cutbacks ,floaters and right before I stopped was just starting to slide my tail after slashing the lip.Now I’m kook boy and no I’m not ever getting a longboard no no no.

      #1) no one cares what you ride
      #2) no one cares how you surf as long as you're not dangerous to others
      #3) the only kooks I see in the lineup are people who can't ride what they're sitting on
      #4) leave your ego on the sand and go have fun

      Keep trying! I started again in my 40's and was terrified of even small wipeouts! It comes back quickly. My best advice is to not worry at all about how well you are surfing, just go get wet, being in the ocean is what counts, if you catch a wave it's a bonus! Aim to flow on the wave and be in rhythm rather than trying to crank tight turns and be rad. Reading the line up will take some time as this is probably the most difficult skill in all of surfing, get active, make quick decisions about where you want to be and paddle there pronto. Dont sit around staring at the ocean waiting for a wave to come to you. Trust yourself, you know what to do, you're just a bit rusty. Have fun

  • @dornelli1

    in fast moving sand bottom floor waves you wont have the time to place the knee first, and your popup needs to be done fastly in ONE motion, if not you be kissing the sand without knowing why

  • @MaxwellMcKinnon
    @MaxwellMcKinnon 2 года назад +3

    Even on the pushup technique, creating a lot of space, i’m not able to bring my front foot to the right spot unless i push off the ground with both arms to create more space. Forcing myself to keep my arms touching the floor, my knee hits my chest and my foot does not have clearance to make it. What am i doing wrong? (My surfing technique in the water must be similar, a push off with a quick movement to get the feet under me, as opposed to keeping the hands in place.) This seems really frustrating I can’t even do the easiest technique correctly. I’m a beginner-intermediate that can pump and cutback once up as well as good paddle power but looking to improve my popup to be faster and more consistent

    Appreciate the help: Standard pop up question: When you push with your hands, do you also push with your knees down on the ground/board to get the hips off the ground? (I ve seen videos where the coach flicks the feet in an quick upward motion, leaving the impression that the surfer would not actually push the ground / board down with the knees and exclusively use the momentum of the feet going up to lift the hips from the ground, which feels completely impossible to me..).

      Have to very fit and experienced to pop up like that. If ur riding a long board it doesn’t matter as much, but on a short board u want to be able to pop up without using knees or feet. This will help pop up the fastest and cleanest
