    Nice video. I am 50 years old, have been living in Costa Rica for over 20 years. I ride a short board and always considered myself an above average surfer. A couple years ago I had a sever elbow injury. In the time I have been out of the water I have gained some weight (from 150lbs to about 170lbs now) and had become fairly inactive. After returning to the water I have had a very difficult time popping up. Sometimes getting my front foot stuck or just not getting my feet into proper position. It has become so frustrating I don't even want to surf. I am going to try these techniques and hopefully it helps and I can get my stoke back. Pura Vida!

      Dude. Coaches completely forget they can do clapping pushups, they have mobility to tuck the front knee hard up against their chest, their back foot stays sideways (inside of ankle nearly touching the deck), and their hips move sideways (not up too much) to get over the rail opposite to the direction you're going to travel.
      It's a strength and flexibility thing when you're getting back into it. Muscle memory to make it easy even when weaker, comes later.
      I know, I'm older than you and took a 30 year break. Took a solid year to get back in form.
      Strength to your arm. You'll love it.

      I know the struggle!
      The left hand slightly forward (if regular, going right) seems like a good tip to keep that right forward foot from lagging.

      @@fogfog8388, I'm 60 and have been surfing my whole life. I can do endless pushups, pullups, etc.. But I've really become aware of the loss of mobility to bring the knee up to my chest, and it's been very disruptive. I've been working on it, but I really haven't seen much improvement. Very frustrating.

    Started surfing at the age of 12 and I am now in my 50"s. I had a hip replacement a year ago and I have found my hips dont allow my old pop up. It is very frustrating to look down the line and your brain knows what to do but your body holds you back. I am going to try some of these tips. Not surfing is not an option and I am not ready for stand up but for you young guys give the older stand up guys a break. Its going to be you one day

    Excellent - can not wait to try it out in the surf. Slow and smooth is fast. Pushing up into cobra position and twisting (leaning into the direction you want to go) at the same time - was an eye opener for me. It was so smooth and effortless. My head remained high and I was on my feet in one smooth move! Thanks for sharing!!

    Right on with hip flexibility being key. I’m 46 and just spent two days surfing in Costa Rica. Last time I surfed I was 39 and did really well. I spent the first day in CR jamming my back big toe and scraping top of my front foot while trying to pop up because poor hip flexibility. The older you are the more time you should allow for warm up and stretching. Hand placement is huge too, nice tips.

    When you have learnt to time surf-able waves the hand position placement is just as important as the hand placement pause. I'm sorry if this is not correct lingo🤔 hopefully you have a video on this already. The wave type and suck determine the hand placement pause, the pop-up and then set you up for the drop and bottom turn. I realise this comes through practise but the earlier this is achieved the faster you will become a surfer. Therefore the more fun you will have too!

    • @southcoastpauly
      @southcoastpauly Год назад +1

      I always actually go squarer on my back hand. That is my hands are square, and I as I get up I concentrate on getting my hips and knees facing forward , and bring my rear hand forward as well. Like I’m about to shake hands. This makes me very forward facing, so that I’m not standing with my back to the wave, I’m already able to look at the top of the wave and easily see the next section.
      I really concentrate on arching with head up and eyes down the line.
      I changed my pop up a lot after doing Chris Mills Perfect pop up program . He’s on you tube .
