Hi Kale, I've been watching your vids for about 8 months now. I made it out to the brand new Skudin Wave pool at American Dream Mall in NJ. Between the Surfskating tips (yes I bought a Filipe Toledo Smooth Star and had it sent to New Jersey) my neighbor and I have improved dramatically. The wave pool yesterday brought it all together when I hit three turns on my best ride of the day. Can't thank you enough for all the content! Keep cranking the tips and knowledge out and know that you've helped two middle aged New Jersey Kooks out a bunch. Cheers! FYG, If you're reading this and are not Kale go get a surf skate NOW and swing over to the surfer's roadmap to snag the surf skate tutorial cuz it's life changing.
@@chelseapatton3684 been surfing on and off since I was in my 20’s but never had the right board or the time to really dig in to surfing as I wanted. With Covid I don’t commute any longer and I’m now in the water at least twice a week since the start of last summer. Hitting the Wave pool was more for training since it’s the same wave every time. Amazingly fun though. Great for beginners to build some consistency and confidence which I needed.
@@richscoza4362 that's awesome dude, I'm happy to hear you never lost the itch, and got the opportunity to come back to it later in life. I don't live anywhere near waves but I hope I do one day so I can try it out for real. I'll have to just stick with the wheels for now, but there's not a lot of comfortable ways to smash on concrete, I need more practice 😎
Practicing with a surfskate on flat ground helped me a little bit. But when I started practicing my surfskate in a bowl is when things really started clicking for me with speed generation, turns, and using my lower body more effectively. Really easy to film yourself skating in the bowl and it feels much more like surfing than flat ground skating.
6:49 I do this a pretty good amount of the time but I never thought it was a mistake. I look at a clip like that and think "there's no chance I could've wrapped that all the way back, I'm way to close to the pocket" Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to try it out next time 🤙🏽
Awesome video Kale! Maybe the best video I have seen for intermediate surfers. I think these can really help me progress in my surfing so thank you for sharing!!
I‘ve been skateboarding for over 10 Years now but can rarely go surf. I still find that the movements are pretty similar and skateboarding on ramps feels like surfing but on concrete and you have much more control. Same with snowboarding. I wish I had a wavepool or the ocean near by :(
These are great tips! Excellent instructions for intermediates. Hey you mates in Aussie are lucky to have a back up spot like that. Her in Cali that’s gonna be crowded and our wave pool in way out in the desert.
Hi Kale I find myself stuck in an intermediate level for too long. I'am a tall surfer always strugling with recompression and lower body bottom turns. I am also the same surfer from the 6:50 mark, looking back, cutting short the turns. Your tips are very spot on. thank you
Thank you bro as always awesome stuff! Love you're talking about surfing mindset & focussing on the enjoyment of it too. Such an inspiration for surfing !
Very useful, Kale. Thanks to this video I have been able to distinguish between the turn of a cutback and the turn of a reentry. In frontside I always make a soft movement, generating a spray but is not a reentry, I have to pass to a more open turn to get a frontside reentry.
Yougot so much more professionnal by the time Kale. You're are pure gold to all the fellows that want to improve. Like me. Thank you so much to be so passionnate. 🙏🙏🙏😍
Well done! I particularly need to work on my top turns and cutbacks. My back knee compresses well on bottom turns but has a weak spot on sideways pressure on turns where the back knee gets sideways pressure during compression. Like you mentioned, I am always in performance mode because I have a solid RUclips following and board sales around the world depend on the 73 year old performing properly 🤗 Anyway... I greatly appreciate the clear explanations. I have been working on a video that explains how putting a rhythm (Flow) into my surfing helps smooth out the "old man stutters" that happen in dead spots on the wave.
Making turns has been something that has made my surfing much better. I know it seems obvious but it took a surf instructor to notice that I wasn't turning with the wave and just going straight down the line making my rides shorter.
Hi Kale, your videos are helping me a lot! Especially the first section in this video. I want to become better so bad that I just skip some steps and want to be able to do top turns straight away. But now I notice that having flow and creating speed is more important. When trying a turn I am always short on speed. Unfortunately there is no wavepool here in the Netherlands and waves are not consistent but when they come I know at least what to focus on!
I'm a big fan of wake surfing. Think about the amount of time you have on even 10 decent waves at your local. Then consider the potential to surf for hours behind a boat. You're going to be able to develop your coordination, especially gaining muscle memory and control of surfboards at generally high speeds. Then, when well coordinated at speed, wave pools are going to be your best friend to rapid progression. I didn't have access to either when I was first learning, but I did get a Carver skateboard, and created my own drills and system for practice. In one month on the Carver, I went from middle-intermediate to early advanced surfer. These tricks will take you to the next level. Great video Kale.
Hi Kyle, I took some lessons on a longboard in the North East of England. It was fun. I bought an Almond foam board from costa Mesa in Cali. The board is 6.4 ft and it goes really fast. I almost stand on it. I still have my leg on the knee on the back of the board when I try to stand. Do you have any tip to stand on this board?
100% agree on varying your surf craft, everyone should have a 9' log in their quiver and learn how to surf it properly, the hpsb always feels like a Ferrari afterwards 👌
Are you actively moving your rear foot when it comes to pumping down the line and then when setting up for a bottom turn do you shift your foot back as far as possible to achieve a tight turn back up the face. I’ve just noticed significant changes in terms of speed when I have my rear foot near the rear fin vs. when my foot is right on top of the two front fins.
Lock down has made a massive impact in my surfing a good way because I went surfing every day because I didn't have school and it wasn't that crowded🤙🏄⛵️
For some reason when I shortboard my leading arm comes up way too high when I setup a cutback. It causes me to dig rail a little too much any tips for that?
Im now at the point that i wanna transfer to a smaller surfboard because I can pop up automaticly and generate speed en all sorts, but im to scared that i buy the wrong surfboard :D
My problem is that in surfskate I’m goofy and in surf I’m regular, do you have a technique for me to make me goofy in surfboard? And in snowboard I’m goofy. It’s my big frustration. I think it’s problem in the take off but I don’t really know…
@@Hugo-ul9rk my friend it's exactly like you, he surfs pretty good regular, but he skates goofy, he's trying to improve only by trying to skate regular, and he's becoming better.

I was just thinking that yesterday. We have a nice bowl at the local park...
Can’t be a steep bowl though (no one is doing turns on a barreling section)
@@KalesBroccoli yet 🧐
I skate bowls and banks all the time, but i feel my surfing progresses more when i practice on flat ground, i guess to each it's own.
People rush to the bowl too fast. Without proper control of the body and a correct twist motion@@fernandomaron87
Loved the top turn lost connection with the lower body, with the side by side comparison.
great one kale , thanks!
Flow is so important. Just flowing with the wave and not always going for hard turns helps a lot. I second the use of wavepools for progression.

Depends on where you choose to do the turn yes (doesn’t work for re-entries)
