You've hit the nail on the head again. It's The Warning, the whole package, that makes this thing work so well. Their song writing is stellar, and they each do what they do well. I'll be the first to say that you happened to be speaking at, what I'm sure most would agree, the pinnacle of the song, a point where they stop briefly before the second chorus thunders in. I hope you have since watched this video again without commenting.
Up to that point, I think it's accurate to say, that song, that day, was the possibly biggest moment of their careers. They were slotted near the beginning of a rather long line-up, and from the start of their set until the end, the crowd grew exponentially. The bulk of the other bands that day were death metal, speed shredding, screamers, and The Warning were quite apprehensive going into their set. They did, as you could see, manage to get the crowd into their groove, and the remainder of the show went quite well too.
They are true professionals on stage, and during this show, right at the end, they experienced a severe technical difficulty, which would have had me crying and running off the stage. They handled it PERFECTLY!
I understand your guitarist point of view, and I'm sure Dany would be the first to admit, she's no Jimmy Page or Eddy Van Halen, but she does, indeed, know her way around that guitar. And let's not forget she plays both Rhythm and lead, and sings over all of it. I don't see many guitarists singing while playing a lead part.
The next song, "QOTMS", does showcase some of Dany's ability, has some riffy stuff, and a tasty solo too.
You'll find many of TWA are reluctant to compare the sisters, saying this one or that one stands out, or is better, or any such thing. The band is growing in ability and stature just exactly the way it is, and if anyone were not there it simply would not work. The intangibles; friendship, musicianship, dedication, talent, and, probably most important, love, are what make The Warning so great. It makes a lot of us cringe to hear talk about one girl over the other with regard to her importance in the band. It's like asking us which of our own children we love more.
At any rate, we've all been waiting for you to hear "Dull Knives", hope you give it another listen or 20, and get a copy of the lyrics. (they're really cool)

BOFFO! Well said once again sir. Indeed, the deep love they have as sisters, and the strong mutual respect that engenders which helps to make them so much better than the sum of their parts. And the way they get along, I don't see why this won't drive them to bigger and greater things as they all mature into young, more fiercely independent women.

I agree 100% to the above but I started following them in 2013 and it took me untill 2017 before I could realize Pau's sisters were more than talented sisters. Although I knew from the beginning that Pau was really unique it wasn't really before I saw them in their "cave" playing Atlas Rise that I came to really understand the greatness of the other two (despite Pau excelled there too). Ale was perfection and had started to add to the artistic point of Metal and Dany's stage performance was out of this world and after seing "Kick start my heart" I felt that Dany really was the engine of this band. Much of this due to her acting on stage and the way she looked at and encouraged her sisters while performing.
For Pau it's difficult to add to this action due to her drumming but she does not need to worry, Dany has that part covered with good help from sister Ale as will show in the next song.
When we judge videos the stage performance is a huge factor and if you want to judge the sound I recommend the sound from Spotify or similar.

@@TheUnderdogDe Someone below recommended the Desvelados TV performance. Great stage set up, lighting and you get lots of close up looks of each of the sisters. And you then realize how much "in character" Pau is as well. They just get it when it comes to performing and the degree to which Ale comes out of her shell with her dancing, bopping and bending while playing speaks to just how much fun they are allowing themselves to have. And it will only continue to age like fine wine. Try to not get carried away thinking ahead, but just think of what they could be doing in 5-10-15-20 years!!

The significance of this particular performance is in the audience. The backstory is this festival is one attended by a huge contingent of hard metal rock lovers. The Warning isn't really a hard metal band and this festival they were one of the opening acts. When the band started playing there were just small meandering around just arriving and meandering around waiting for the big acts to start. As you might have noticed by this song there was a huge crowd and they were very much into the band and their music. The power and magic of The Warning. The sisters tell a story of how when they got there and time was approaching for them to play how they were worried about how they would be received. Then after they had been playing for a short time they looked up and noticed this huge crowd as far as they could see clapping and enjoying their music. When they tell it the story is so funny. Great clip. Great song. I agree with you on the guitar work. At times it doesn't work for me as well, but as I mentioned in another video Dany's guitar work creates this big texture of guitar sound and her solos are melody based as opposed to fret gymnastics. Kind of a nice difference at times. Love your comments about Paulina the drummer. Yes, she is the engine of the band. Without her, I think most agree with you. It's hard to speculate because so much of the power of the band is how they each bring a specific element to the group more than just their respective instruments. That dynamic is what, I believe is the key more than the talent of any one member. Back to that analogy.... Yes Paulina is the engine, Daniela is the spark plugs (electrical system as a whole) and Alejandra is the drive train. These three elements make the vehicle go. Take away any and none really function and the vehicle won't go. I believe this is the uniqueness of The Warning. Another great reaction. Always love hearing your analysts.

Daniela Villarreal does not shred like Eddie Van Halen- Few guitar players are on that level. That being said, she has a unique ability to sing live while playing a running melody line on the guitar. Not an easy task. Combined with her powerful vocals, she is a major talent that elevates this band closer and closer to greatness. Your reactions to this band are really interesting. Cheers!

Thanks Thomas. Just for the record, I don’t think a guitarists needs to shred to prick my ears up. I’m not really a Van Halen fan. He’s a great player but doesn’t do anything for me. Likewise I tend to find shredding a complete turn off on the whole. I guess stuff that makes my ears prick up might be something like John Mayer, as just one example, playing really soulful, melodic and tasteful stuff. Or really good fingerpicking always gets me too. Given Danny is singing most of the time though, she does a great job.

With this album, they really focused on not doing the typical "4 chord progression"; Dust to Dust is an exception, and for you that's a stand out, but the rest of the album doesn't really do standard riffs like you noticed. I don't know anything about anything when it comes to instruments (I think Peter Fallman told me that about the chords, haha), yet I still really enjoy--with this album especially, analyzing everything; the drums, guitars, bass, piano, vocals, lyrics, etc. On a first listen through I wouldn't recommend listening to it live like you have, but instead the studio versions and then go from there... And listen to it beginning-to-end in a single go. And having lyrics in front of you and read along. But even if you do all of that, it still requires multiple listens to wrap your brain around everything, especially when it does come to the lyrics and story. I've listened to every track from the band (not only QOTMS but also ETM and XXICB) dozens of times each, and I'm still noticing new things with them with each listen. QOTMS is very complex, and I really enjoy analyzing music like what's on the album. For an easy listen through, I'd say listen to XXI because it does the 4 chord progression, and at least for me it makes it an easier listen. The lyrics are still important in those songs, but it doesn't tell a coherent story like Queen of the Murder Scene does, so my brain isn't constantly analyzing as much. And Escape the Mind I still really love too, and I like the happier tone (even though it's only happier in comparison of their later stuff, haha) of it. That's simple rock, but still really good in my opinion. So yeah, Queen of the Murder Scene really isn't the best for reaction videos like these because you need to listen to them multiple times each to really understand what's happening--you seem to be analyzing the guitars and drums first and foremost, but the bass and lyrics and such are really important to the songs as well (especially the lyrics), which is why I recommend multiple play throughs.

A couple comments -- folks recommend this version over the QOTMS version because Pau changed the drum patterns when they recorded the studio version for QOTMS. For better or worse, she simplified the fills which gives the song a bit less energy than this older version. I'm not sure why she made the changes.
Second, Hell and Heaven is an annual heavy metal festival and the girls aren't a heavy metal band. The first band out was a death metal band with a super heavy sound and TW was next up. The girls were expecting to be booed by the crowd and were amazed at how enthusiastically the crowd responded.

    • @westmus

Neal B, they seem to liked a polished "commercial" sound, that remove a lot of that rock energy. Sadly, because I actually think they really shine when they become a little rough. I just saw Dust to Dust from Inferno and having that little feedback on Dany's guitar just made the song sound 50% better. It sounded like rock'n'roll, Rolling Stones and not 3 nicely dressed teenager girls. I also loved the distorted acustic sound she had at their little pre- show. It gave their sound much more egde. 🤘

    • @markjames8664
      @markjames8664 4 года назад

I think Pau is being careful not to dominate songs with fills just because she can. She grabs her moments but she wants the song to be the center, not one player. But the version done for (De) tour is the best so far despite not having an in-person audience. I just watched that and I think Pau increased the tempo at the very end of the outro for that show, she looks like she’s about to go into orbit! Anyway, that clip is a must watch.

The typical classic rock band are males with a guitarist or singer that stands out. The Warnings strength are that it's a different band. Not only mexican females, but also sisters and their Angus or Slash are the drummer. I'm sure people are right, Ale is the sleeper. She got the skills and talent and will slowly step up her game as she grows older.
That said, Dany will probably alwas be my hero. She's fearless and got a drive and charm that make her the perfect front man for this band. This is a band of 3 teenages that still have a lot of time to grow as a band and musicians and fans have seen that non of them know the term "giving up". 👍

Bravo! I agree wholeheartedly. I love them all for what they are, but there is something about Dany's natural, easy as Sunday morning, charisma that has captured me the most. I am so excited about how she evolves as both a musician and front woman, because from what I've seen since she nearly melted in the heat of MOAR festival, she just improves with each and every day, and every performance is ratcheted up in intensity that much more. And she's getting even more comfortable with incorporating more voice inflection, gravel / growl and power screaming, for lack of a better word. She may not shred on guitar, but she shreds my rock-loving emotions every time she steps to the mic.

It's interesting to hear the various incarnations of this song. When they first wrote it, before they recorded it, Pau was doing those Everlong-esque fills in the chorus, but for whatever reason she always came out of the fill too late, and had to speed up and skip notes to catch back up with the rest of the song. At some point, she stopped doing the fills, which is how it is recorded for QOTMS. But then they did that livestream quarantine show, and she put those Everlong fills back in. Except, that time she nailed it and it sounded great. It would have been a different song if she could have figured that fill out before they recorded.

The riffs they are a comin'! But I could tell you were impressed with the pulse-driving rhythm of this song. Most bands who rely too heavily on power chords DO sound pedestrian, and probably what killed 80's metal. But there is nothing pedestrian about Ale's pounding bass lines, Pau's amazing drumming and Dany's soaring vocals. Hence why we're so geeked up about them. I mean what great band from the past hasn't had that ONE standout attraction. But Dany and Ale are quickly catching up.
Makes me think about Green Day, most definitely a "power" trio that is greater than the sum of their parts. But when I look back, I'm struck by the similarities of the two. Tre's drum fills, Billie Jo's powerful and unique vocals (but heavy reliance on power chords) and Mike's thumping, and very catchy bass lines (if you like bass melodies, you can't go wrong with GD & TW) that really give their power pop-punk that sturdy foundation!
Overall, a good, solid and honest review. I'm surprised though that you didn't "ooh" and "aah" a bit more throughout. You hard to please Brits! ;-) It may be a simply structured song, but damn if they didn't win over that huge throng of mostly heavy metal fans. To me that is very telling about how good their stage presence is, and the quality of their straight-ahead rock sound. But you're right, without Paulina driving those melodies forward with her tremendous drum rhythms, then they probably aren't at this festival yet. Think you are really going to feel different about Dany once you hear the next track, the title track. It's just, ahem, "killer!" I wish they had unveiled it at Hell & Heaven, but not sure it was even done as of early May last year.

The way Pau and Ale play together is core to everything . Playing together for more than five years now, they’ve got that lock in. On the newer song “Nacisista” Dany does some cool guitar stuff, easier because Pau has lead vocals (how she can sing and drum in a pretty fast song is still an amazement - especially since she is less than five feet tall and has to move a lot to reach the whole kit) Dany also writes really nice guitar solos - not technically flashy but they really fit with the songs. I also think it is great how she has never tried to hog the spotlight as some lead singers do. I’m really looking forward to what Ale does on the next album, considering that when these bass parts were written she was only 13.

Might be time for you to do a sampling of other new, female bands, or bands with key female components to compare to TW. Bands like Liliac, Band-Maid, Iron Cross, another Motion Device, Asterism, GFM (Gold Frankincense & Myrrh) etc. Because every time I check out a new band and like them, then watch their limited live stuff, they can never hold up to the standard they set with their slick post-production recorded sound for their glossy Y/T videos. Even Asterism, as fantastic as their playing is have a few warts when playing songs live, and their cover of Enter Sandman doesn't, surprisingly, come close to the quality of TW's. Although they only do instrumental so it's harder to compare.
Paul, my friend, I think you are "playing it cool" a bit for fear of being perceived by some non-TWA folks as some kind of deluded fanboy, but when you listen to The Warning live versus other new bands, you begin to realize they really ARE that special. Even if their music is less complicated or structurally more simple, if that's fair to say. Regardless of that, they are so damn tight and cohesive and there aren't any bands out there with a drummer like Paulina. There are some good ones, but nothing like her in which the drummer is driving melodies and propelling the song forward as opposed to holding together the low end as "glue" so to speak.

Drumming of course great. But also the bass pumping. I see that you enjoy the whole package. Now, go back to their first live gig of this song at Dakota beginning 2018 or end 2017 and listen to the drums and then listen to the Lunario version and it’s like two different songs. One raw and the later one more polished. I like the raw version better as it has more drums fills, but it’s me. Hey thanks for the ride you are giving us.

@@MaddogJones Is rock not about the performance? ;-) Think we all know it's a good song. Paul is savvy enough to check out the studio version. But at this point, thought it was a good time to change it up a bit. I would have given him my Whisky vid performance of DK (cuz in my view it's the best yet with her "doodle" and stage theatrics at the beginning), but alas, we can't use those. So frustrating. Hurry up USCIS, grant the damn visas!

@@MaddogJones This was the first time we saw Ale running all over the stage. That alone made it a stand out. Yes the audio or picture quality is better in other vids, but this is the first time, in my opinion, that the band we know today appeared. Pau is always theatrical, Dany has probably worked the most on "performing" as opposed to simply playing, and here we see Ale in her modern carnation.

@@MaddogJones I hear ya man, but was thinking with it being such a straight-forward, structurally "simple" song, it wasn't as important for Paul to hear all of the underlying nuance. But I think he probably would have had the same reaction even with better sound quality. If he didn't have more of a visceral reaction to what they did to that crowd, then I"m not sure Dull Knives at the Dakota would have elicited much more in terms of an animated response. While I appreciate that he's assessing them from a different angle than we are, I'm thinking he's just shy to "head bang" and make "rock mug" faces for the camera. ;-) But honestly, he must really like them to do what he's doing. And a 9 minute reaction on a 3 minute song. :-)

I think Dany has the skill to do guitar riffs but they just aren't really written into these songs. She did the Enter Sandman riff years ago very skillfully. I would like to see more also, and I think she can do it, but the band is not pushing it so much.
Anyway, what does this song say? As the Queen of the Murder Scene album follows the girl through her obsession and murder, the girl is losing control and considering suicide. In the previous song, Sinister Smiles, she’s already said “. . . grab the dagger. Cut through skin and stain the water”. This is a very “feminine” way to commit suicide- in the tub, maybe a bubble bath, so that the blood from slashed wrists remains in the tub and does not dirty the house. I assume dull knives cut “better” because they cause more pain, and at this point she is self-mutilating. She realizes that the evil side is winning.

Good reaction, totally agree with your assessment. Plenty of energy from the girls, and whilst you say Paulina is the standout musician I still think the engine room of the band is outstanding...I’m on about the bass again!!! If you want to see Dany’s riff skills, then check Atlas Rise at the Whisky.
Lastly, this was a good show at H&H, but I think they’re playing better now than even the Lunario show, catch the 6 songs from Desvelados the TV show. ruclips.net/video/o9TUxn-WTt8/видео.html

Your comparison to Sikth raise an interesting point. It has to do with listenability. I don't have the ear or music skills to analyze much. I just know what I like and I find it interesting to hear what music experts hear and find compelling. I went to a Sikth and listened to both cuts you mentioned. Sorry to say, I couldn't get through either to the end. What the guitarist was doing was lost on me. My problem, I know. I have bought TW CDs and I might go to a concert if they ever get to the East Coast, but there's he difference for me---one is eminently enjoyable; the other hurts my ears

They only add fills or shred when it feeds the song, to them. Though each could blast a killer solo at any time, they won't break the song flow just to show off. I appreciate that
When I hear someone show off just to do it and interrupts the feel of the song, it's annoying.

Please please please stop talking while the video is playing. You talked over and I’m sure you missed a great moment by doing so. As for Danys lack of riffs, you are right. A lot of what they call “The Warning Army” wont mention that point but by not talking about it doesn’t make it any different. A part of being a musician and in this case a young growing musician is you will hear the comments that make you feel uneasy....that’s life...it’s not always praise and pats on the back. Take the not-so-good comments as a learning tool and move on. Their newest song that’s in Spanish I noticed that she did a nice little riff. Not a long one but enough to grab my attention.
