Free Fallin started as a joke, he was trying to annoy his producer who was asking for a hit and then they both realized it was actually a good song, so they added a capo and made history. Petty couldn't write a bad song even when he tried to
Tom had that “gift.” I was lucky enough to watch that process up close on a rare occasion when he wrote a song within minutes of being given a lyrical line from an audience member. It was truly magical…

The beauty of it all is that Tom is with us every time we put needle to vinyl, pop in a cassette or 8-track, or go digital. He was an American icon, and his legacy will continue for generations.
I saw a Tom Petty documentary what really what was what his fellow musicians said about him he was a musicians musician. I think that was the ultimate compliment
Tom was like a childhood friend. I was 11 when the first Heartbreakers album came out. And decades of great songs (like this one!) just kept coming. I saw them live in Miami in the Nineties, and I'll never forget their rendition of Purple Haze. Pure genius!
Wow. I saw them live about 10 times and never heard "Purple Haze." I'm jealous! I remember them doing a kick ass version of "Should I Stay or Should I Go" at the Merriweather-Post Pavilion in about 1987 ,though.

If I was ever down, all I had to do was listen to Tom's songs, this one in particular, and I was lifted up, my soul was soothed. I love all genres of music but only Tom's music made me feel that way. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mr Petty for the outstanding music, rest in peace talented, beautiful soul that you are.

So thankful I got to see him at least once. 20 years ago in Duluth MN. Staples Singers opened. I came back to Miami in 1976 from college and I grew up close to 441 with the waves crashing on the beach. Been playing his music for the last 40 years and performing it for the last 20. A poet who could capture the experiences that make us most human and, of course, the voice of the Baby Boomer generation. Like everyone, miss him so much. Huge Mike Campbell fan, perhaps the hookiest guitarist of his generation. Petty comes out on stage to start the show in Duluth, they played the first song everyone is on their feet and applauding, but the applause doesn't really stop, maybe a minute in, they start the next song - the audience stops applauding. This happens two more times 🙂. After the third song (they've been looking at each other on stage kind of like, what's going on). Petty comes to the mic and says "guess we should have come here a long time ago." Of course, the audience exploded in laughter and more applause. Wonder if any of the other members of the band would remember that.
Although the genre of music I both grew up with, and performed, was of the 50's & 60's I considered Tom Petty to be a fabulous and gifted musician and vocalist of his era! Another great performer gone way too soon!
Never appreciated him (them) enough until I started learning Mike's guitar riffs and realized just how solid the catalog is. I guess I also got burned out with constant radio play of 'refugee' and the like. Bummed that I tried to get tix for that final H Bowl gig, but to no avail. c'est la vie
Man I heard someone say " It's ridiculous to shed a tear over a celebrity. Come on did you know them, did they visit? Dumb save the tears for your own. ..... Well YES they did visit every time I played their album and YES I did know them in a sense so that's close enough for my own as I can get. Especially since I listened to him over 40 year's. Thanks for this great video. RIP TOM You live on in our hearts.

Only Tom Petty could take such tried and tested classic rockn'roll DAE chords and do something fresh and exciting with them in completely his own unique way.
This has become my favorite over the years. Started with Here Comes My Girl, then Don't Come Around Here No More, now this is my favorite. I also love She's a Woman In Love!
Tom never blew me away. He was never my favorite. I liked his first album. I liked his second, third, fourth, fifth and so on and so on and so on. After almost 40 years, he was like a comfortable old sweater or a pair of jeans. Life was better just knowing he was out there. Miss him very much.
"I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants, you'll be the girl, at the high school dance. Run with me, wherever I go, and just play dumb, whatever you know. You really wreck me honey, yeah you break me in two, but you move me honey, yes you do.: I love, love, love those lyrics. Miss the hell out of you, Tom. To the friend and college roommate who shared her copy of Full Moon Fever with me in 1992, you have my eternal gratitude. She introduced me to Tom and AC/DC. I introduced her to The Police and Sam Adams lager.
When Tom Petty could not finish this song, after 2 years into the making of the album "Wildflowers" in one night he changed just one word which in turn changed the entire song. Instead of the Title of the song being. "You Rock Me Baby" he changed the Title to, "You ROCK Me Baby." That is what a Great Artist does. They hang on to their best work such long periods of time, until they find the perfection that they need to make the song as they feel it should be, not only for themselves or for their Fabs, but for both to enjoy. 🎶💜🎶
The piano on this song is f*****g brilliant!!! I once drove from Miami to St. Petersburg FL to spend a weekend with my crush, listening to this song on repea during the drive there. Great memories!
It honestly mind blowing how TP had success in the 90s in an era where nirvana grunge r&b and hip hop was huge without having to copy any trends just goes too show how Tom Petty was just able to connect to different generations Mary Jane's Last Dance, You Wreck Me, Into the Great Wide Open, and Learning to Fly are as classic as American Girl Breakdown and The Waiting I imagine a dad who grew up in the 70s seeing his kid in the 90s seeing his cd collection among his nirvana Metallica Ice Cube collection he sees Tom Petty's Greatest Hits TP was just an artist to still be good in the 70s 80s and 90s I still hate myself for not seeing him live to this day RIP
That looks like so much fun TP had such a great life, there's really nothing to be sad about, absolutely the greatest songwriter ever, and what a great band
“There's never going to be someone else," he says, shaking his head. "You've wrecked me. I wouldn't be any good to anybody now-except for you.” ― Emm Cole, The Short Life of Sparrows . . . . AMEN, WILL
I think it’s actually harder to write a simple song that doesn’t sound cheesy, than it is to write highfalutin mumbo-jumbo. Petty had a gift.

RIP Baby! We will miss you more than only words can fail to express. Thank you for keeping us sane.
the real king of rock and roll
Fuckin right
True
@@eliotrobinson9613 most underrated musician ever!!
Well he was heavily influenced by Elvis.
Look at jackets he wore on stage.
"I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants, you'll be the girl, at the high school dance. Run with me, wherever I go, and just play dumb, whatever you know. You really wreck me honey, yeah you break me in two, but you move me honey, yes you do.:
I love, love, love those lyrics. Miss the hell out of you, Tom.
To the friend and college roommate who shared her copy of Full Moon Fever with me in 1992, you have my eternal gratitude. She introduced me to Tom and AC/DC. I introduced her to The Police and Sam Adams lager.
Nice tribute. Good of you to type this in. Wonder if she's still around?
One of my favorites. Thank you for this. Tom's legacy lives on, despite the haters. Bravo sir 🤘❤
Mr Petty knew what he was doing when he put this one together. Great Song!
Love love love. Thanks, Tom and the Heartbreakers. RIP
This song ROCKS! So glad I got to see him on his last tour before he went to Rock and Roll Heaven...
Tom, somehow I hope you can still know how much you are loved. Hope you're having wonderful times in heaven. We miss you so much.
When Tom Petty could not finish this song, after 2 years into the making of the album "Wildflowers" in one night he changed just one word which in turn changed the entire song. Instead of the Title of the song being. "You Rock Me Baby" he changed the Title to, "You ROCK Me Baby."
That is what a Great Artist does. They hang on to their best work such long periods of time, until they find the perfection that they need to make the song as they feel it should be, not only for themselves or for their Fabs, but for both to enjoy. 🎶💜🎶
Same with movie scripts as well.
Little pointer I’m gonna take.
I’m a perfectionist.
Rest in peace Tom, we'll always miss you buddy. Your music will forever stand as your legacy. One of my favorite songs of yours right here.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have always loved Tom n his heartbreakers stuff. The Dylanesque vocals of him always wakes me up.
easily one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, shame he is no longer with us.
Love, love, love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I got to see him in 99. Great show! RIP Tom💕🤘🤟🙏🏻😇
The piano on this song is f*****g brilliant!!!
I once drove from Miami to St. Petersburg FL to spend a weekend with my crush, listening to this song on repea during the drive there. Great memories!
One of Tom Petty's greatest hits and he and the Band had many!!
Man miss you tom petty! We lost a freaking legend!! Keep it rockin 🎸🎸🌟🌟
I always wanted to be early to the show because he usually started out with this song. What a way to get the party started. Love you, Tom!
Hard to say which is his best song. Crank it up!!!
The one you are listening to at the time is his best... they change depending
Tom and Mike made it look easy. Saw them live twice. Having more fun than the audience....which isn't really possible.
Doesn't Howie look so good here? What an awesome song; it's one of the favourites for sure!
That looks like so much fun TP had such a great life, there's really nothing to be sad about, absolutely the greatest songwriter ever, and what a great band
“There's never going to be someone else," he says, shaking his head. "You've wrecked me. I wouldn't be any good to anybody now-except for you.” ― Emm Cole, The Short Life of Sparrows
