I've seen him 4 times. At one concert, he had a treasure chest in the middle of the stage, right in front. Suddenly, the lights went dark and the band members circled themselves around it. Tom Petty opened the chest and there was a very bright white light coming from inside. He reached in and slowly took out his top hat. The crowd went wild!!! He put it on his head and they all started playing again. That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my entire life. (slow, methodical) 👏.... 👏.... 👏.... 👏....

Always been a big fan of Tom Petty since the seventies. Little did I know that after he was gone , his music would help me get through the darkest time in my life. I sure miss him being on this earth.
I'll never forget the Super Bowl half time show one year after the stupid 'wardrobe malfunction'. Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers just walked out there and really rocked the hell out of the place.
Don't know about you but I'm getting kinda sick of the regular 1/2 time Super Bowl shows. They need to get some more rockers in the mix. I vote for Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs.
He came on trembling with nerves, counted in the first number number, then rocked through about 16 hits, while we all sang along. There were moments of deep emotion and transcendent power, he was never smug or overly confident. At the end you realize he’s written more hits than anyone, and that he and the band love to play together.
I saw him live, was doing some media photography of the show, and I was just blown away by the musicianship and showmanship of Tom and his band. The way he engaged with the crowd surprised me, he really played to the audience, the music was incredible, the fans had a great time. Really one of the most amazing performers I ever saw (and I have seen a lot).
Yes. He knew how to work the crowd and I will say that the people that go to his concerts, LOVE Tom. He gave so many peoples' lives' meaning and truth...
@@Skibbidyboobop I agree. The only other time it happened to me was when Neil Peart passed. It felt like I lost a brother. Strange since I never met him.
Kind-hearted, great sense of humor, and truly an artist in every sense of the word. Music is not something you generate in a computer and then autotune the hell out of. It’s talent. It’s emotion. It’s tears, anger, joy, and everything in between, and it comes from the soul, expressed in a medium that takes years and decades to master. And it’s the tiny imperfections that give it a life of its own. Tom knew that better than most “artists” today.
My brother was working on Toms new house during the Wilbury period. In fact the wilburys big photo was in front of a door my brother built. He told me one day he was working around back and George Harrison came out the back door and jumped in the pool. I had a dream once that I was watching TP and the HBs from side stage and Tom started playing a song I’d never heard before (and I’ve heard em all). I woke up, grabbed my guitar, and recorded it and was able to remember the first two verses, lyrics and all. That was a very emotional dream because I realized within the dream that “how can I be seeing Tom…..he’s deceased!” And so all of a sudden it seemed like a very special spiritual experience. I woke up w tears streaming down my face. The lyrics of the song were about him “coming back” (in a spiritual form). I think a part of us all died when Tom left us.
Would love to hear it! I'm writing a Wildflowers-esque album with loads of his style! I had a couple dreams of him too! Me and my dad walked with him into a gas station as he appeared older and very keen on being friendly with us, in another I was showing him my photo gallery and album cover art when he was like..."You need more Jesus in there, man." I smiled like he did when hanging with Willie Nelson!
Mind blowing that this was 25 years ago. When Conan said Tom's been making albums for 20 years (closer to 25), that seemed like a long time. By the time he passed, Tom had been in the business over 40 years.
What a great interview. I only got to see Tom play live once in my life and that was in Grand Rapids, MI back in 2008. He even had Steve Winwood open for him. He sounded great & played almost all of his hits. He also looked like he was enjoying himself just as much as we all were. The thing that really stayed with me from that show though wasn't the tight performances from the Heartbreakers but how excited the crowd was even after the show was over. Tons of ppl were smiling and singing "Free Fallin’" even on the way out to the parking lot. I'd never seen a crowd react that way before or since.
I know I'm late to the party but Tom Petty was my first concert I think about 2002-2003 when I was around 8 or so. It was in Nashville I believe. Bo Diddly actually opened for him. Very awesome experience. Unfortunately that was also my only time seeing him as well but I'll never forget it!
You knew it was a great show when leaving the stadium everyone is still singing the outro to the encore tune. Tom and Co. put on one hell of a show every time I saw them. So sorry he's gone. RIP Mr. Petty.
Saw him at Shoreline Amphitheater in 2008,during the housing crash. The economy was a mess & he knew that. He lowered his ticket prices & during the end of his performance he spoke to us how grateful he was that we all came to his concert and thanked us. This was the only show I had gotten to see this amazing musician. Wish I had more, wish Tom had more. He literally gave his life for his music & fans. Rip Tom ❤️🎶❤️
Once, Tom injured his hand by punching a wall because he lost a fight with his label over the pricing of an album. Label priced it at $5.99; Tom wanted $4.99 to get the disc in more hands. Damn the Torpedoes album maybe?
@@DavidFobare- The record was Hard Promises and the label wanted to sell it at $9.98, which would have made it the first to sell for a dollar more than the then-current standard of $8.98. Tom took a stand for his fans and refused to release the record until the label backed down. Tom Petty was a man of the people and in an ever more cutthroat world, he is sorely missed.
@@crusheverything4449 Still doesn’t top Pearl Jam standing up to Ticketmaster. I only wish the rest of the industry followed suit and real change came of it. That monopoly is one of the greediest there is. So many people can’t afford to see their favorite artists because of them.
Tom Petty and Gary Shandling were great friends. Seeing Petty on Shandling's final show was hysterical. Especially the backstage fight with Greg Kinnear. Clint Black says to Petty about Kinnear - "hey, this guy was nominated for an Academy Award." Petty responds "for what "Talk Soup" " It was epic.
I dig that he was honest about his feelings. People bullshit too much these days! You hate the group freaking own it!! I like groups that actually play something!!
@@robertstreet7177 So are we to conclude he "hates" (something he did NOT say) all the singers throughout history who didn't play instruments for their music? Anyone from Frank Sinatra to Aretha Franklin to Elvis to Whitney Houston?
@echt114 Really, Frank and Elvis didn't play instruments? That's new information to me. Elvis even played guitar on many of his albums, and on stage. Also, I'd like to point out that every single person you pointed out were solo artists, who weren't part of any band/group. Even still, they had real bands playing music with them on stage. Plus, there are many bands, where the lead singer doesn't play any instruments. Yet they are part of the band playing music on stage. There is some differences between band, group, solo artist, a boy band, and acapella. Boy bands are not bands, or solo artists. They are a group, that would have been better if they had done acapella, instead of singing to synthetic sounds. I'd rather look at AI art which all looks so fake to me.
I think he was really good at deflecting attention through humour. It was rare that he made public appearances, the Conan O'Brien thing was a bit of an anomaly usually they sent in videos so they didn't have to appear etc. Made it special for sure.
I saw him twice live, and I have to say that it was the one musician that I had to see. Tom Petty's music has been such an important part of my life, it is the soundtrack to my youth. He will always be missed, but we got to share this planet with him for a little while at least, and that is something. RIP Tom Petty
That’s why Tom was the best. He liked to jam with his friends he didn’t have an ego he just liked good music. The show I seen Stevie Nicks came out and sang with him.
everyone, including his tour manager since the beginning, told him to get the hip fixed after a bone split from a fall at home, but he said I'm going this tour if I have to go on stage in a wheelchair. After his death his wife Dana remarked on this, he was a stubborn man.
Tom Petty's music still rings true. Before he passed away, a fellow musician friend of mine sent me the lyrics to "Wildflowers," which inspired me to make a move across country to a distant place wherein I know I will feel free. I am sure many others listened to Petty's lyrics and did the same over the years. As a singer-songwriter myself, I am always cognizant of writing lyrics that people can relate to or that inspire. It isn't easy and neither is finding the right chords to make the words sing, but we do what we can do and hope for the best.
Saw him and the HBs 8 times. Best rock and roll show you could ever see. I played Room at the Top of that Echo album the day he passed with tears in my eyes.
What I love about TP was his ability to reflect back to us our intimate lives, loves, fears, anger, justified indignation all of it. As many men as women commented when he passed; all the babe magnet rubbish just fell by the wayside. He stood for something. Recently watched his performance with his unmatchable band at the Superbowl in 2008, a difficult year economically all over the world but that simple song united people in a good way, belying Douglas Murray's contempt when he speaks of the madness of crowds. To me it's an ignorant ungenerous pseudo-perspective. People can unite for good or evil or out of fear or rejoicing. Petty was a catalyst at that moment in time for good, which I for one will not forget.
A great songwriter and a very smart guy. I've seen a few of his interviews and have always been impressed with the depth of his knowledge on various subjects. I was lucky enough to see him on his first big tour in 1978, when he played the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. By the end of the show, I and many others were actually standing on the tables. Tom and the boys blew the roof off the dump!!
Tom's passing hit me pretty hard 😢so many wonderful childhood memories watching his awesome music videos growing up in the late 80s. You'll forever be missed ❤
My very first music great!! I fell in love with him when I was in the 6th grade. Omg his music!! He was so true to himself right from day one. You could feel it over the radio how real this guy was. Oh so cool and sweet 💕
Timeless tunes. The learning to fly intro is (I now think) just a rickenbacker playing an arpeggio over a 12 string strumming and it’s possibly the best guitar sound I’ve heard ever. Perfectly mixed too. What a supergroup.
EVERYBODY on this planet knows and loves at least one Tom Petty tune. I'm fortunate to know, love and sing along (badly) with all of them. RIP Tom, you are truly free.
Me either. Never liked him or the band/music. Nothing against him, but never interested enough to buy any of their albums. Don’t care for Springsteen either. Robin Trower when James Dewar was alive more my speed.
How could you possibly be that naive? He's got one huge hit and hasn't been relevant in 30 years, and even then do you think they knew who he was in Asia or Africa? My God people on RUclips are just clueless.

@@Jmiah-j7v I'm truly curious, what was his "one huge hit" song? A little off-topic, but related, I knew a lady years ago in my art group who claimed that Rod Stewart only had one hit song, "Do you think I'm sexy?", and she seemed genuinely surprised when I went into a list of his hit songs from the 70s-90s. To this day, whenever I hear that song on the radio, I always exclaim "It's Rod Stewart's only hit song!" 😅

I feel you on that. I cried like we were family and I don't care if it sounds silly to anyone. His music means that much to me. It is the soundtrack of my family's life.
Got to see him play on that tour, only got to see him live once more after that (with Jackson Browne) but man, what an incredible musician, and a man of quick wit and great character We all miss you, Tom.
Six Years after his untimely death (10/2/2017), I still find myself clicking on any TP interview. That's how much I miss this man... I regularly play his music on my guitars, I'll listen almost exclusively to "TP Radio" on Sirius XM. I even went out and bought a used "Full Moon Fever" cassette for my vintage 1968 El Camino's cassette stereo to frequently reminisce and appreciate. As a Classic Rock enthusiast, when asked the tough question--"Which is my favorite band?"... my quick response almost makes it seem like it's a no-brainer.

I saw Tom in 2017, 5 months to the day before he passed. I'm so grateful for that experience. Randomly, the guitarist for the Plain White T's sat in front of me at that show.
My second cousin is from Gainesville and met 'Tommy' a few times around 1960, when they were around 10 or 12. His Dad owned a business and had a truck that had a wide array of items, which he sold to people who ran small variety stores. On one occasion, Tommy proudly displayed the truck's contents to my cousin---though they were careful not to touch anything. Years later, when Tom formed Mudcrutch, he he often played the University of Florida, before forming The Heartbreakers in 1976, and all of my cousins would attend.
I was really never a huge fan but did always like Tom's music. I'll never forget driving in the car and the announcement came on the station I was listening to that Tom was in critical condition in the hospital and it had a very powerful affect on me. I felt genuinely concerned for his well being, he died shortly after and it was very sad. A great talent, he left us some great music, RIP Tom
I saw the '99 tour in Charlotte a month after that interview, and they blew everyone away as usual. opened with Jammin' Me and the crowd went absolutely bonkers.

@@cmet8280yeah, it’s amazing to me honestly. I grew up in the 90’s and made fun of bands like that, and Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc. constantly. Don't know about you but I'm getting kinda sick of the regular 1/2 time Super Bowl shows. They need to get some more rockers in the mix. I vote for Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs.

@@americanvet10 I contend that Weird Al headlining would make almost everyone happy.
One of my biggest regrets in life is that I never saw him live. He is one of, if not the .. favorite artists of mine.
He put on a fantastic show.
Same
He came on trembling with nerves, counted in the first number number, then rocked through about 16 hits, while we all sang along. There were moments of deep emotion and transcendent power, he was never smug or overly confident. At the end you realize he’s written more hits than anyone, and that he and the band love to play together.
Yeah, I missed out too.
I have said exactly this. At 53, he was the soundtrack to my life thus far. Can’t believe he’s gone but I’ll appreciate him forever…♥️
The man was a certified hit MACHINE. Some of my all time favorite songs came out of this man.
Yes. He knew how to work the crowd and I will say that the people that go to his concerts, LOVE Tom. He gave so many peoples' lives' meaning and truth...
The wife and I saw him his final weekend. Very sad.
RIP Tom Petty.
@@BalokLivesI felt like I lost a friend when he passed. I've never felt that way about another artist.
Thats amazing! He is surely missed that's for sure I have days where I still can't believe he is gone
Can you share the song that you (and Tom) wrote together? How does it sound?
Would love to hear it! I'm writing a Wildflowers-esque album with loads of his style! I had a couple dreams of him too! Me and my dad walked with him into a gas station as he appeared older and very keen on being friendly with us, in another I was showing him my photo gallery and album cover art when he was like..."You need more Jesus in there, man." I smiled like he did when hanging with Willie Nelson!
Now I want to hear your song!
I've heard Tom's speaking voice on King of the Hill more than I have anywhere else.
Same. All I hear when he talks is Lucky.
“Nuthin like gettin a corn chip right off the line Bobby”- RIP Lucky

Well my friend I saw him a billion times , he never disappointed , the tour you saw was one of the best I ever saw , 🤘🍻🤙
I read a biography about him. It was excellent!
Once, Tom injured his hand by punching a wall because he lost a fight with his label over the pricing of an album. Label priced it at $5.99; Tom wanted $4.99 to get the disc in more hands.
Damn the Torpedoes album maybe?
@@DavidFobare wow....I never heard that one! Thanks for sharing!!!

Still doesn’t top Pearl Jam standing up to Ticketmaster.
Was it a real fight between Kinnear and Petty?
