Here's Tom Petty's comment the day after Garry died: "I’ve known Garry for a long time. We go back to the mid-80’s. I just want people to remember what great work he gave us. The Larry Sanders Show just stands as some of the best TV work ever done. He was always quiet about his talent and just a really decent guy. We had a very strong friendship. We kept in touch all that time. You know, he’d come to our shows, and he’d hang out with us. I went to his house many times and he would come to my house. It was a comfortable friendship where if he came over I didn’t feel like I had to entertain him, and it was the same way back. He had an incredibly original talent, and as a man I can’t say enough about him. He was more than a showbiz acquaintance to me, he was a dear friend, and I will miss him."
They were great friends. And I feel honored they shared it with us. If only we could have friendships this great. I wish they had kept rolling. Garry was getting teary eyed, and that is part of all friendships. RIP to these two greats. Both departed at age 65. Both creative geniuses, ...still producing up until the end.
So hard for TP to be that candid -- I'm jewish and suddenly dropping in on friends when you know your time is limited -- I understand the prison of celebrity but I would do that. Funny reflective deeply painful to watch; I take a stand on breach of boundaries but it's ok to watch this and not rent the Bogdanovitch official bio video -- makes zero sense.
The great friendship between the two was great, I just watched Gary with Jerry Seinfeld and those two were really funny together. But I DO MISS BOTH OF THESE GREAT TALENTS MORE THAN ANYONE COULD KNOW. I felt SO BAD when both of them left us. If it's real, Gary Schandling must have told him he was dying or something. This video should be removed but of course won't be because of the lack of boundaries on the part of fans who have now been termed as engaging in what is now officially parasocial relationships with people they will never meet often and now permanently dead. Were I Dana I would hide in the bedroom as well. !st time Warren Zane Tom's biographer met him outside his house he was in camo hiding in the bushes outside the restaurant. You people are clueless.

Tom Petty is right when he talks about the quality and warmth of analog sound, and that's why all his records sound great. I even started collecting them, but only the original old edition, nothing new digitally remastered.
I always thought the same as what he said about the "warmth" of old records as opposed to a "coldness" with digital. I have almost every 45 and LP I owned since 1963. Nice to know someone like Tom thinks the same way but we are of the same generation. Miss him.

The conversation they were having, Garry saying that we should tell people we love them as you never know, and Tom telling the story of how Garry stood looking out over the landscape and said 'It's the end of the world.' These kind of topics, philosophical questions, are usually discussed when you're at the end of your life, when you know you are ill. Who would have ever thought these two would be close friends? It makes sense since they were both wonderfully talented and genuine people. Watching this makes me both happy and sad.
I was 17 when Damn the Torpedoes came out and Tom Petty's music really was the soundtrack to the best years of my life. I was lucky to have seen him at an outdoor show at Greatwoods in Massachusetts when the Black Crows were the opening act. That was easily the best concert I've ever seen. Then I saw him again in Hartford with Steve Winwood. I wish like hell I'd seen him 10 more times. I haven't changed my Sirius radio from the Tom Petty station since he passed. What a loss to the music world. Him and Malcom Young. Two of the best musicians ever.
"Two farmers on acid," says Tom. Their humor together is a total treat. I’ll bet Tom’s dinner parties were pretty amazing. Get George Harrison in there, with his sense of humor, forgetaboutit. RIP all of them. 🙏
I love Tom Petty. THere is a Tom Petty cover band here in Richmond, Virginia and so it's gotten me to listen to him again. What a poet! What a great musician. I miss him!
I have watched several interviews of Tom Petty, some real good ones. But this chat with his pal Gary Shandling is the best thing I have found of Tom speaking. It's so real and interesting. Just Tom being Tom, at home with a friend. I've watched it about 7 times now. Soon to be 8.
Shame on me, I didn't know Gary Passed away, I just found out about Tom a few hours ago...........SO SAD, I'm being Selfish of Course who's to know when and why the GREAT ONE'S go to Early in My opinion. Never Got to see Tom LIVE, I Thank GOD AND TOM For leaving us a PHENOMENAL BODY OF MUSIC BEHIND, Tom was such a GREAT ARTIST AS WELL AS A WONDERFUL HUMANITARIAN!!! R.I.P. TOM, YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED...............................🎸❤💚❤
Tom is right about tubes. I have had a tube pre-amp for the last 20 years. When I was auditioning equipment in an audio store, I heard 2 or 3 solid state pre-amps and then when the guy hooked up the tube pre-amp, the difference in the warmth of the sound was immediately apparent.
I’ve owned a vintage Neve… And first off it’s a UK made (not German) discrete component transistor console with loads of transformers … not a single tube in them 😂
I LOVE this! Just cried my eyes out having heard you have died today! Thank you peaky hat for our wonderful talks : you were so REAL & FUN . R.I.P you LEGEND 🌹💋❤️
Tonight is the first time I have seen this video. Ironically today I chose to quit smoking...again. I'm 63 and in great shape (I thought). When Tom died at 66 from a heart attack I decided to see the doctor to have my blood pressure checked the other day. It was always low, 110 to 120. The other day it was 145 this was due to picking up smoking again. It was a year ago that I restarted. Now I'm Jonesing, but I'm done with cigs. Tom died from smoking like a chimney, the same with Bowie. If you don't smoke, please never try it. It absolutely sucks and it's one of the most addictive drugs on earth. I'll be okay in 3 days when the nicotine is out of my system. But the habit will take longer to diminish. Miss you Tom Petty!
BangTaoBeach May your road to being smoke free be a steady one. But if it's rough, most likely, hold on, cry, exercise and eat well through the shit. Bless you
Thanks for posting. Two great guys, showing what friendship and life is all about... And how short life is.... LA is really a small town sometimes... RIP Tom and Gary...
Garry Shandling Was one year older than Tom. Gary passed way in 2016 at 66 years old. Tom passed away in 2017 at 66 years old Three weeks shy of his 67th birthday. RIP.
These could have been any two guys on any street corner in any city or state in America. Without knowing them, you could pass them on the street and never realize that you're looking at a comedy great in a rock and roll legend. RIP gentleman. Thanks for the tunes and the laughs.
This video is good for my soul. When I'm feeling down I come here, both amazing men gone too soon. I remember watching The Gary Shandling Show on the tube TV in my moms bedroom cause it was the only room with AC when I was a kid. And Tom, well, been a fan since the first time I heard Free Fallin. Both gone way too soon.
I used to smoke 5 packs a day. Marlboro Red and a cuppa. Quit many years ago. One day a lower intestine CT scan picked up a small spot on my lung. (I have long lungs) I started crying immediately. Went through 3 years of follow up scans to see if it grew. It did not. It was scar tissue from a previous infection. That was a long 3 years. I'm 70 and have little residual issues. Just lucky.
I have never seen this before, or even knew about Garry's interviewing show. Or whatever this is. But... WOW. This is amazing. I was a kid when I accidentally discovered the Garry Shandling show and the quirky humor. I was bummed when it ended, and didn't like the Sanders show as much but I didn't know anyone else who was into his humor as much as I was. I was also raised on LOTS of Tom Petty from my dad. So seeing this... Wow. what an awesome and hilarious pairing.
LUCKY said he was LUCKY !!! loved tom petty's music you liked one song you pretty much liked them all i wont back down running down a dream list goes on GARRY i used to watch the larry sanders show all the time garry and rip torn the shame about it all is pretty much all the good ones are gone people like TOM and GARRY are missed in this day and time!!
The beauty of true friends... Hopefully, everyone gets to experience gets this kind of friendship. Where doesn't matter if you haven't seen each other in years, the conversation and feeling hasn't skipped a beat. As if there was no time apart. Everything just flows naturally. So cool. May they meet again...
I don't think I can describe exactly how I feel having watched it. I'm now 61& a half. I was a fan of both these guys. they both died way too young, and now I find this video I didn't know existed where they share real feelings (despite 3 cameras). I felt exactly the same about both their deaths .now? so soon? it makes me even happier though, that I finally visited my uncle yesterday ,who I have only seen recently at the funerals of 2 of his sons(my first cousins) in the recent past ,about 2 yrs time .he's lost 4 sons in all. (a family of 14 kids in 2 marriages)he turns 89 in Dec. and he looks great! (not a smoker) .my Dad, his brother, a retired firefighter ,died suddenly at 65 . I've been at the point where I fear I could go before him, and not see him ONCE socially .we really don't know what that next day on the calendar will bring .I was very entertained by this, but it will now be a constant reminder of just how short life can be. always seeing Petty playing & singing, I really didn't know how much he smoked.

2 farmers on acid.
Tears in the eyes. I think Shandling passing may have really hurt Tom. It strikes me they were very very close. RIP guys.
"Did you turn jewish....?" Omg, I'm loving this. Kinda teared up towards the end.
You used to come over… 😂
Watching this and said to ourselves,'How ironic to see these two together today.' Rest In Peace Gary and Tom.
This is my favourite video on the internet
Who would have ever thought these two would be close friends? It makes sense since they were both wonderfully talented and genuine people. Watching this makes me both happy and sad.
True in this case, however this statement isn't always 100% true.
I miss him!
They were almost the same age, and both passed away at 66? Geez. Rest in peace, Tom and Gary. Thanks for uploading this.
Just One of my many favourite clips with Garry and Tom. Miss them both R.I.P 😇
The chat between them was priceless.
I’ve owned a vintage Neve…
And first off it’s a UK made (not German) discrete component transistor console with loads of transformers … not a single tube in them 😂
I LOVE this!
Bless you
Good luck buddy. I wish you the best.
Read "the easy way to stop smoking" by Allen Carr. I haven't smoked in 3 months and I dont miss it at all.
Fentenyl killed Petty, not smoking. But good luck with that, quit 18 years ago myself.
Tom died due to drug use
Thanks for posting. Two great guys, showing what friendship and life is all about... And how short life is.... LA is really a small town sometimes...
RIP Tom and Gary...
I'd like to think that Tom and Gary are doing this exact thing right now...
Both Now Gone Forever, Man Life is Short...RIP Tom & Gary...
Garry Shandling Was one year older than Tom. Gary passed way in 2016 at 66 years old. Tom passed away in 2017 at 66 years old Three weeks shy of his 67th birthday. RIP.
This is one of the most hilarious interviews I've ever seen. They were both geniuses in their own right...
These could have been any two guys on any street corner in any city or state in America. Without knowing them, you could pass them on the street and never realize that you're looking at a comedy great in a rock and roll legend. RIP gentleman. Thanks for the tunes and the laughs.
Just fascinating. Simply.
RIP , , soo good to see this. a very special 20 minutes,,,thanks.
Just a fantastastic interview! R.I.P Gary and Tom.
That was just beautiful. What a great couple of guys. And some great shit.
Dang. My radio is locked on Sirius Tom Petty. To see him spark up one Camel after another just bores a hole in my heart. I will miss him forever.
Just lucky.
rip Garry shandling two cool guys there
krlm2280 ....Fly High with the angels...Tom & Garry
Even the way Tom smoked was cool….Rest in peace to Garry and Tom🙏🏻❤
Give me the names of the 20 thumbs down. I will find them...
Maybe they were drinking with excitement and just pressed the wrong button 🤔
I have never seen this before, or even knew about Garry's interviewing show. Or whatever this is. But... WOW. This is amazing. I was a kid when I accidentally discovered the Garry Shandling show and the quirky humor. I was bummed when it ended, and didn't like the Sanders show as much but I didn't know anyone else who was into his humor as much as I was. I was also raised on LOTS of Tom Petty from my dad. So seeing this... Wow. what an awesome and hilarious pairing.
Tom was Such a Kind Person
I COULD LISTEN TO TOM EVERY DAY. SO LOVEABLE 🚶♂️
I saw that episode • Quiet Down Cow Poke • Never get tired of watching this •
What an amazing conversation. Thank you
So sad to see Tom still smoking at such a late stage in his life. Miss both these guys. Both died at age 66 a little over a year apart 😢
Just came upon this. Makes you sad, but happy at the same time.
great conversation😎🎶👍love it
Tom petty Mary jane
Thanks for sharing this
So missed but Never Forgotten !!💕💕💙💜✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌
That Neve board is very likely an 80 Series probably 8068 model, Transistor early 1970's made in England - sound fully amazing
I was on the floor laughing when gary asked tom if he uses tubes. tom just laughs and says yeah... gary was the best
Two untimely deaths here! Brutally sad both of these talented men are gone.
Damn.... both are gone. Glad we have this.
Two greats and they’re together again . RIP 🌹
My band recorded our one and only album on a Neve Board.
What a beautiful little moment in space and time. 🪷
Tom died of drug toxicity which caused organ failure.
@@Randylayhe001 a self medicating star .not new.
"Life is short. But not short enough," GS. I don't know why, but it makes perfect sense.
