It is sad to me that he was so enlightened, so self-actualized, and yet he could never bring himself to be vulnerable enough to have a family of his own, to marry and have children. That breaks my heart because his brother’s death left him so wounded, and I think having children could have helped heel that wound.
Long long time ago. I played basketball with Garry Shandling. He was really good. Great trash talker. I respected him so much I had trouble guarding Garry. RIP, genius.
I was aware of a Handling forever. But something about his voice and facial expressions put me off then the year before he died I made the effort to find out what he was about. Spectacular creator, so special, someone who literally punched a pipe into his chest and let the inside come out forward facing no tap or valve. A rare insight into humanity. Rest in peace dear Garry.
Interesting Garry should talk about his need, and, indeed the requirement to be honest. Coincidentally, that is what comes through in his artistic work more than anything. I can't think of another more honest artist than he.
The Zen Diaries of Gary Shandling by his friend, Judd Apatow running on HBO now......fantastic show about a very funny, very interesting, very human man.
In the spur of the moment chose to stream Diaries, because I've always thought him very funny. Who knew he'd be such a thoughtful, sensitive human being as well. Mr. Apatow produced such a tender tribute to a friend and supremely talented mentor.
There is no amount of neurosis that good sex can't cure. He had a babe. (half joke) Don't focus on what you think or feel; focus on what you want to do.
+Bilge -- people are so hard on Charlie. Where is the recognition that his (now-defunct) show provided more than the 4 minutes (or less) that interesting people are allowed on typical talk shows. He may interject his comments (some would call it interrupting) but if you are really paying attention you will notice that Garry often speaks at some length. This is an across-the-table conversation, so Charlie is allowed to say something. It is not as though he prevents his guests from saying important things.
@@rr7firefly Exactly. Don't let the hivemind get ya. A lot of self aggrandizing morons have opinions and that seems to be ruling the day, sadly. Charlie Rose is a fantastic interviewer and people who say otherwise simply have no fucking idea of what they're talking about. He is really good at letting the subject speak and finish a thought, good at extemporaneously reading cues from the subject and following them, good at giving the subject space and not forcing the interview in any given direction and does that while on a schedule with timing cues and other people talking at him through his earpiece.
It's pretty obvious that Garry was a tortured soul. He seemed to be stuck in the middle between two opposite poles. On one hand, he was an artist who was deeply human and seeking to connect with and audience. On the other hand, he was surrounded by Capitalists who turn his art into a commodity. This was exemplified in his art and on his shows. I'm not sure he could ever put his finger on identifying this incongruity in his life, in these economic terms. But, I think he was bothered by a lot of the dehumanizing results of Capitalism. And Capitalism and art don't make sense together. He talked frequently about how Larry Sanders was all about Hank, Artie, and Larry's love for each other. On the other hand, his art is contained in a capitalistic vehicle run by TV executives, whom he often spoofed and demonized. The medium of television, fully contained within a Capitalist structure demands a degree of predictable scripts, likes short unnatural talk show appearances, and pressures a successful show to continue as long as it is profitable. All these things bothered him. And he rebelled against them. Both as Garry and also as Larry. He was good at television, while simultaneously resenting everything about it. But, the pressures that came with commodifying art were ones he pushed back against. He quit shows early, got bored with formulas, resented greedy show biz sharks. He really just had a duality of feelings about Capitalism as it tortured him and also made him rich and famous. And doing television while living in the 90's in Los Angeles might be the deepest weirdest expressions of capitalism we've ever seen. He would leave it all and go camping with his dogs. People would find that odd. 40:00 Charlie Rose inquires about why it seems to be his nature to go against his own self-interest. Marx would say, "because Capitalism goes against our nature as humans". Garry says, he was raised a hippie and has a thing for honesty. Same thing?
Reach the word Capitalism with dishonesty and you get closer. Sometimes it takes an extra observation to realize that it is the rose colored glasses that are affecting how we see things.
I love how while Gary is babbling about doing what's right and being devoted to a more loving world - Charlie never asks him about Linda Doucette - his actress girlfriend on The Larry Sanders Show who he promptly fired after they broke up. She ended up suing him and he settled. I wonder if Gary thought he was doing what's right when he fired Linda.
As I write this (June 16, 2020), your comment is labeled “4 years ago”. And as of this day, David Letterman is still with us and making us laugh. But not to diminish your RIP for Garry Shandling who was taken from us too early and *is* sorely missed.
I really did not like listening to Garry have to keep telling Charlie he can't talk about the lawsuit. Who really cared about all the details of it? I don't know why he kept harping on it and making Garry and the viewer uncomfortable. Sometimes Charlie is really bad at reading when people are annoyed or angry. Garry got annoyed several times in the interview even though some of it was good-natured. This was not one of Charlie's better interviews because he was so obsessed with the lawsuit as to actually go into who the lawyer was and how great he was. The average viewer has no idea who that lawyer is nor do they really even care.
Not quite sure if Gary Shandling likes being on the Charlie Rose Show or if his hackles went up on a basic level when they actually met in person. He seems sincerely uncomfortable. And Charlie Rose seems nervous about Shandling's persona. Funny, because he appears, onscreen, as a warm, beguiling, non-intrusive person, and so does Charlie Rose...is this like holding a mirror up to a mirror and seeing yourself again and again and again...(I typed this at 14 minutes in)
+Paula Harris Baca I think GS always seems uncomfortable because he's very vulnerable. I think he was anticipating CS's laser like interviewing style and it was making him nervous.

Gary Shandling was a great talent. Authentic, brilliant and consistently hilarious ! "I wanna leave them not even knowing what hit them!"
One of my favorite shows that I still watch. The Larry Sanders Show. Perfectly brilliant.
Thank you Gary Shandling you are missed
Such an amazing individual, both professionally and as a human being...
Gary was one of the GREATS....RIP.
Likable, authentic, and outrageously funny. He is missed and sorely needed.
loved Gary Shandling! a master story teller! so human, funny, great! A real mensch!
An enlightened man. Thank you Garry. 🙏🏼✨💜. R.I.P.
