    "My brother had asthma." This is a rare reference to his brother, Barry, who died of cystic fibrosis when Garry was 10.

    Underrated. He should be mentioned with the Robin Williams, George Carlins, Richard Pryors etc.

      George Carlin is responsible for Gary's start. He gave advice reading his 1st script.

    It's hard to think of who would be able to replicate such a performance, best delivery of those jokes. Such a loss to the comedic world

      He probably wrote it for them. He was a professional comedy writer. He started out as Joan Rivers’ Chief writer

    Would love to see the sketch that follows this- it’s the continuation of his breaking of the 4th wall, and features the brilliant Jan Hooks and Phil Hartman.

      Yes, the sketch is hilarious. Not only does he break the 4th wall, but the other actors in the skit don't know that he is about to break the 4th wall, they don't understand it, and they are very upset with him. Truly breaking the 4th wall, and truly hilarious.

      So, watched The Larry Sanders show yet? I love Garry, but I had to stop around season 6 or so. Probably will get back to it, eventually.

    It's mostly in the delivery. The jokes are good but they must be sold in a certain way.

      Garry could and did do either. He wrote plenty of jokes that are great on paper.

    I miss him, no question was a people with the capacity of change us.
    I stay in here, Brazil, and don't have humorist so good.
    I know an arabic humorist, i laugh and I had so much fun, he talked about how Bush was responsible for the American tragedy.

    SNL mainstage ...make any performer nervous ...deep breaths ...I remember the play, I was in ...deep breaths, before curtain time ...very exciting ...easy to get addicted to ...the, "Fix" of the stage :)))

    Garry maybe tried to bunch a bit too much routine into the monologue, but a few of jokes started to land in the middle. I wish he had made a stronger narrative (about whether to monologue) and less neurotic rambling, but we would have none of GS's work without that neuroses.

      I mean at least he is a professional with content. How many times has SNL had a host on that is a one hit wonder or known for 1 single thing they did on television and has to run the whole 5 minutes just talking about Hamilton?

      The Apatow book is great, a great insight into Shandling. You'll see all the neurosis and whatnot.
