Ricky Gervais meets one of his comedy idols - Garry Shandling, creator of The Larry Sanders Show - and acts like a boorish tit through-out. The coffee moment in particular is fantastic. Not difficult to see why this was shelved for so long, bearing in mind Gervais' ego.

garry shandling makes ricky gervais the very thing that ricky makes people in his comdies - the butt of the joke. Ricky expects people to get it and deal and Gary is pushing his buttons to see how he reacts when put in that situation himself. Brilliant stuff.

Same idea here. Garry humiliated - actually toyed around with - him, just for fun. I think he disliked Ricky from the second they met, because Ricky was a boor. Ricky's accent sounds a bit posh for US ears, but it couldn't have went more beautifully if he, the chav boy from Reading was visiting a real nob family in the UK. Garry just mopped the floor with him.

Although in his interviews he is incredibly funny and witty, so he is talented in making fun of his real nature.

Gervais is pretty much always Gervais: aggressive, abrasive. In contrast, you don't know which Shandling you're going to get. He can be a nice guy in real life, complimenting other comedians. But in Larry Sanders he shows how a talk show host can destroy a guest, make them look like a fool. His low key delivery makes his attack even more devastating. He's giving zero energy to the guest, who gets dragged into the quicksand. This interview is so much harsher than the scripted Larry Sanders episodes, because Shandling didn't give Gervais any warning. Yeah, this was a performance by Shandling, but it was devastating anyway.

I think there was a misunderstanding here. They were supposed to do two segments. The first being funny and playful and then a more serious discussion about comedy. Shandling thought the opposite would happen so he took Ricky's playfulness at the beginning as aggression and then he handled him with ease on multiple levels to teach him a lesson. I think Ricky came in too hot and got what he deserved. He should have treated Garry with more respect.

The deal with this interview is Shandling gave strict instruction that they were going to shoot something for him first which was going to go on a dvd extras thing - before the interview with Grevais for the BBC was supposed to happen, and when Shandling arrived and quickly realized Gervais was not told this and they were going straight into the Gervais thing he decided to kind of sabotage it by playing it very low key - which was what he was going to do originally for his own thing. I know Shandling said he invited Ricky over so he could interview him and had set his mood low to do that but then walked in his kitchen and a hyper Gervais was there with a camera crew rolling and took him by surprise, so he just went with it. he said they should have stopped the interview and got on the same page but neither of them suggested to do that and the camera kept rolling. They're both hilarious but Ricky is definitely phased here. Shandling did his best to make him feel uncomfortable to see how Gervais would react - he was looking for a sparring match.
Shandling actually asks Ricky why he feels it's funny to make people feel uncomfortable, all the time trying to hold a mirror up to him. Very clever, I think. Ricky really should have made the most of it. Nice little insight, though.

It’s like watching two famous painters walk into a mutual canvas without realizing it. Shandling though, it was his own home. Judd Apatow talks about this interview on Neil Brennan’s Blocks podcast. Apparently, Ricky broke an agreement to wait to set up until Garry arrived. That’s why the awkwardness and hostility in the opening scene. It’s a plausibly deniable “accident” that Ricky and his team were already there. But Shandling felt slighted and disrespected.
Sometimes I wonder if Gervais is a genius or an imp possessed by the Joker archetypal spirit.
Shandling was a “serious person” - as he said in the ending, “he did the best he could”. You can really see him trying to contain his emotions. And of course, get some digs in while he’s “suffering”.
      Absolutely fascinating and insightful.

A true legend……a comic’s comic……most natural comedian and actor of all time……..but God is he complicated! he wasn’t arrogant……he wasn’t rude…..he just is. He is 1 out of 1……..speaking, yet so private that it kinda backfired sometimes……maybe not… I never had the pleasure of meeting him….but every standup…interview…and of course the greatest show of all time Larry Sanders, he stole the show….the funniest on screen…on any frame…….super quick comebacks etc…..but there was always a dark shadow casting over him…….that made him pull back and told him “cut”…..his O.C.D was next level……his fear took over 24/7…. He was super insecure……his comedy was epic…..could’ve been even more epic but something…….held him back……..I have no clue….but there was something………Rest in Power Mr.Shandling……you to me should of replaced Carson……without you there would be no OFFICE……10 shows out there and most importantly no Curb Your Enthusiasm! I hope you found peace and love and what you truly desired but never really found…….happiness…..we love you buddy! You are truly missed! Say hi to your pal and neighbor Tom Petty, for me! Cheers!

Page after page of comments and almost every single one of them missed the point. Shandling is smart, a comedy (and marketing) genius. He, like many MANY other people dislikes Gervais intensely and finds him offensive. With that in mind, why would he try to make Gervais comfortable? And why would he give a darn what people on Gervais's sleazy little island think?

I think that actually Garry was really smart and relised that Ricky's whole humour base is on cringe, unconfortable comedy (derek, the office, extras) so he made the interview extremely awkward as a way of making someone like Ricky (who comes across as arrogant and thinks he can shrug off anything thrown at him) actually live the unconfortable experience he simulates in all his comedy shows; to get a taste of his own medicine.

First time I saw this interview I took Ricky's side. After watching the Larry Sanders Show, you realise Shandling is so much deeper in his comedy and thought than Gervais ever will be. Here's the real story: Shandling had been struck by the idea that Gervais would be a great addition. Though he’d never appeared on the show, Gervais had spoken openly about how Sanders inspired him. So Garry called Gervais and asked if he’d do it. The answer was yes, but Gervais also had a request. While he was in Garry’s home, could they also shoot his Channel 4 show? Shandling agreed, and all was well until the day of the dueling interviews, when wires got crossed. Garry says he assumed they would shoot the “visit” for the DVD extra first, because “that laid-back, not-on tone is good preparation for saying, ‘Let’s turn it on'” later, for Gervais’s special.
But when Shandling walked into his kitchen, he realized instantly that Gervais thought the Channel 4 special was being shot first. Gervais was on-extremely so-and so were several cameras. Garry could have said something but wanted to see what would happen if he played it out. What if he stayed in the same low-affect head space he was in to do his DVD extras? Could he reach Gervais without explicitly identifying the problem? Could he bring Gervais’s energy level down?
“It’s fascinating, really,” Garry tells me. “We both became locked into the shows we were each doing, and it became a bit of a boxing match. Because he’s trying to get me to do the show that he needs, and I’m trying to get him to do nothing. I was trying to pull Ricky into the moment.”
