Gary's deep insecurity about his looks is not fake. I love how he played up the vanity as Larry Sanders, but it's very real.

The moment when Ricky Gervais compared Garry Shandling to a member of the Banana Splits, to Shandling's utter confusion and to the laughter of no one except Gervais himself--I think that was the final tipping point when Gervais, seemingly without a shred of irony, became one of his own characters.

Ricky's not Jewish. It's like Michael Scott repeating the Chris Rock routine.
He expected Gary to laugh which would give him a pass for saying it but when Shandling didn't laugh, he realized he had misstepped.
Because Ricky is just an office funny guy, not a real comic.

It would be more like the garbage that was afterlife S2+3. 🙄 I am so glad Garry Shandler gave him such a hard time, the cring factor was incredible! RIP mate. 👍

There's no way that this is just them playing 'roles' - for whatever reason, Gervais genuinely does rub Shandling up the wrong way - check out the body language at 09:36. That isn't just awkward, it's openly hostile. If you watch to the end, after the interview is over but the cameras are still rolling, Gervais immediately walks away, and Shandling turns to the director (or whoever) and apologises. Why would they do that if they were playing around?

The lack of knowledge about who Shandling is, the readiness to say he's this that and the other, and the praise for Gervais is maddening. Shandling is a very complex person who wrote and starred in one of the best comedy shows ever created. Watch the Larry Sanders Show before you decide anything about anyone. He is revered by most of the people, including Gervais, you think are brilliant.

To continue from part 1: When someone is secure and nervous, facing an idol, they become humble. When someone is insecure and nervous, they become arrogant.
You learn the true person when they are out of their comfort zone. And because the true person is not the Gervais that is sitting relaxed and comfortable there and listens to Shandling, the insecurity defined his decision to cancel the series.
3.35 Ah, self-referential material. I had something amazing along those lines once, creative flow, but it was utterly ruined by bad company. So much phoniness in the world. Ugly business.

Gasparagus Productions Garry mentions in an interview that he said to the producers of ricky's show that they should start with his dvd extras first. Because after bbc one they can't easily settle down to do his low energy one. Apperantly producers didnt mention to ricky and when garry came and saw they were doing the bbc first, things started to go south. Judd Apatow says he was mad. After the show garry told ricky what happened and maybe ricky was so embarrassed that he didnt wanna work with the producers that cause the bad experience to happen knowingly.

You have to be fearless "finding the awkward" in any situation and finding it funny. I forget the comedian (Carrell, Colbert, Oliver?) who said that they would look for the smallest moment - walking into an elevator - and do something to intentionally make it awkward, like enter and keep facing backward - just to luxuriate in the awkwardness.
A comedian has to be comfortable "loving that uncomfortable moment" that most people cannot stand.

Garry Shandling was in the middle of the Larry Sanders DVD when he did this interview... you need to watch that DVD to fully understand what's going on here. It's not that he's insulted, or thinks he's better than Ricky, he's just bored with being funny, and wants to talk about "deeper" things. Ricky didn't latch on to what he was trying to do and they clashed. He wasn't being hostile, though.

When you remove the talent, the writers and the producers, the people with imagination, the standups who got Gervais to where he was at his peak - take them all away and you're left with David Brent.
      He wasn't acting.
As his latest shows, in which he has way more creative control, shows that to be true.

The uploader of this video has been through the comments and removed all of the positive comments toward Gervais hahahaha. Ffs. Some people.
Look at some of the comments annoyed about too much praise for Ricky. You can’t find a single comment now praising him. 🤣

    • @jimreily7538
      @jimreily7538 4 года назад +1

Maybe most people who used to like Gervais now realise he's actually a bit of a dickhead. Rather than being brilliant at acting like a dickhead - he was just being himself in the Office. Because he is exactly the same here.
He got owned and this video reveals it.
You sound totally paranoid. As if you're the kind of person who WOULD delete comments "in support of" the guy you like.
In my view Ricky is likeable but he's a suckup. He sucks up to powerful people - and don't tell me his Golden Globes performance was some kind of brilliant takedown of pompous Hollywood....
      Why ?
Because everyone was laughing at the time, and he was lauded and praised by everyone after.
Watch his Interactions with Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Louis CK. The video is on RUclips. Four people and guess who is the odd one out ?
      It's Ricky.
He is a suckup. He kisses ass because he wants to climb the ranks. That he makes a few jokes at an Awards Show doesn't make him any less of a social climbing, celebrity worshipper (the same show that invited him back to do another routine, meaning, no they didn't hate him, they loved him and he loves them).
It makes him a hypocrite. He loves to take all the praise for "destroying Hollywood", which he didn't do, rather he was there as one of them, as their friends and he did a routine they loved.
Then after receiving praise for taking down Hollywood, he moves there and starts making movies with them. Oh man he must be HATED in Hollywood right ? No. They love him because his tongue is permanently in their asses.
Shandling is trying to get Ricky to be normal. To stop kissing ass, to stop mucking around. He's seen through Gervais. He realises this guy is barely funny, but very lucky
But mostly, it's obvious to everyone who watches this video that Ricky can't stop being rude, silly and stupid. Going through the fridge FFS ? Who does that ?
You've just walked into the house of someone you've never met, and you're going through their fridge in 5 seconds of arriving.
Seriously, who does that ? On camera or off ? Meet the guy, be courteous and respectful, don't just think he's going to be "on" all the time, because you want him to be. That's what Gervais doesn't understand...the ass kissing continues tho.
      Another comment said it best:
Gary is funny. He loves comedy. He doesn't care if people like him or not, he wants to make them laugh - like the brilliant Sam Kinnison.
He is all about the psychology of human behaviour and the comedic elements involved in that.
Ricky is the kind of guy who practised comedy and acts funny to get people to like him.
Ricky memorises jokes from a book, then tells them to other people so they will like him.
      Garry wrote the book.
      That's the difference.

    • @jimreily7538
      @jimreily7538 4 года назад +1

      Also:
This video is Ricky's unmasking. Most of his fans suspect he's either annoying, or acting - they cannot tell but hope he's acting.
This video reveals that he's not acting annoying, he actually is annoying.
Once you realise that, the whole schtick is dead.
Ricky is smart enough to realise that this video was dangerous to his celebrity, his money and his movies and TV shows.
That's why he cancelled the series. The whole series. Because of this one interview.
      Who does that ?

    • @jimreily7538
      @jimreily7538 4 года назад

Let me just make that clear.
You're here, making a claim that the uploader has deleted all the "pro Ricky" comments - just because there are no pro Ricky comments.
Ricky Gervais had an entire series COMPLETE. All episodes filmed. All included on the DVDs.
Then he CANCELLED IT. Why would he do that ?
      Because this interview was included.
To reimburse the distributors cost him alot of money, but he did it.
He wasn't willing to, or didn't have enough money to, get all the DVDs remade WITHOUT this interview.
So he cancelled the show, scrapped all the DVDs and that was that.
That's because he is so thin-skinned behind his fake laugh and fake comedian act, that he cannot stand ANYONE seeing him taken down a peg.
He must be worshipped, he must be viewed as the hilarious brilliant British comedian who takes no prisoners.
In reality, he is exactly who he supposedly parodies.
Would Karl Pilkington be funny, if he was genuinely, truthfully the guy he pretends to be ? Hell no, all his material would be sad, with people like Ricky picking on a genuinely retarded individual.
Let's say the Office was a reality TV show. Would people find David Brent funny ? Hell no. He's an annoying, small-minded, petty, pathetic little loser who tries to use comedy to get people to like him, but who is basically self-absorbed, and mean. But has no ability to self reflect on how his actions influence others. Or doesn't care.
David Brent was supposedly a brilliantly written character because, the audience asks, "Wow, how can they write this guy to be so cringeworthy, yet so similar to real life middle manager ? Brilliant".
But really, it's just Ricky improvising, and being himself. Nobody thinks that is funny. Unless you actually empathise with David Brent and see him as the hero of the show, in which case, you'd have to be the same as he is, right ?

    • @jimreily7538
      @jimreily7538 4 года назад +1

So that's basically why nobody supports Ricky here.
Because he's showed everyone he wasn't acting as David Brent.
      He WAS David Brent.

I know the OP deleted the positive comments because when I first watched this video about 6 years ago, the comments section was filled with Gervais fans hating on Shandling for being weird. Now, you can’t find a single comment in support of Gervais. I just thought it was hilarious that someone would be bothered enough to do that.

The description of this interview is untrue. I've seen the other people Ricky interviewed. The interviews were great.

Thank you! Please read my comment up thread. I think people missed that it's two comedic geniuses who are both legendarily authentic, having a conversation that is very much off the scale of "normal" interviews. Great stuff.

If people don't understand that the awkward moments are intentional, they need to actually watch the Larry Sanders Show. THE ENTIRE SHOW HINGES ON AWKWARD COMEDY. Both men are playing off of it. Jesus.

I don't think the conversation ever seems to get to the stage of REALLY awkward, but Garry genuinely didn't seem to like Ricky's typical touching thing that he does whenever he finds something really funny.

I don't see what was considered poor about this interview, it was off script, they had not met one another until the camera began to roll. I've seen this several times to dissect, and I think it was a brilliant mistake. Better than anything on TV talkshows.

Garry is pissed that no one informed him beforehand that the BBC interview with Gervais is on, he initially wants his interview with Gervais to go on first for his DVD because it's more subdued and serious. As he said from an interview it's much easier to go serious first and switch to funny than vice versa. Obviously irritated he goes on with interview to see Gervais' reaction and as Garry's explanation from another interview "i'll be damned if nothing happens with this interview if i go along with it".

On second viewing years apart this wasn't really as uncomfortable as I remembered it. In fact, they were both funny. The meat of this interview is pretty solid stuff - - only some peripheral scenes were awkward. Gervais seemed a bit nervous hence his forced laughter (more than usual).

I can't decide whether Shandling didn't really get Gervais's classic British affectionate piss-taking or whether he was *playing* someone who didn't get it. Similarly, I can't decide whether Gervais didn't get that Shandling was trying to play him, or whether he was *playing* someone who didn't get that.
I need to watch the whole thing but right now this looks like two smart-arses trying to outsmart each other and ending up with a car crash.
