Oh man. THAT was an unexpected surprise. I'm roaming around, looking for a quick video to watch before I get back to my chores, and I see this. "Oh cool! I can do this AND the dishes." Yeah, no. HAD to sit down and watch it-watch it. The dishes started to complain and I told them to shut up or I'd replace them. (Works every time.) THANKS, Daniel, for having this and posting it. It always feels good to laugh.
One of the greats... he had such a funny mind, and a unique delivery. Johnny Carson once said truly funny people are naturals... born that way... with the ability to see the humor in things and communicate that perspective to others. That was Gary Shandling. R.I.P.
That ending with the dog made me cry a little. Gary really was an amazing person that seemed as heartfelt as he was funny. We always seem to lose the best ones way earlier than we should.
I lived in Vegas for almost a decade when Gary did several shows and he NEVER disappointed. He will be missed by all of us who truly love comedy and his brand of self effscing humor mixed with self admiring jokes at the same time.He was just awesome and I never felt like I didn't have a great time and he got me through some tough dates
so true, and his voice and mannerisms certainly help. The greats who deal in 'simple' and ordinary always have that extra gift, their delivery. Brian Regan and Jim Gaffigan as well.
Here because Dave Chapelle shouted him out in his special and I thought “oh he must be great.” Wow can’t believe I’m just now experiencing this comedy, RIP
Growing up, watching plenty of network TV, I developed an affinity for standup comedy performers (The Standup Golden Age: Woody Allen, Rich Pryor, G. Carlin, David Brenner, Joan Rivers, David Steinberg, Robert Klien, Henny Youngman, Dangerfield, Dick Shawn,, Bill Hicks, , . Gary came along and moved in immediately to the top of my list of favorites and stayed there until his untimely, way too soon demise. I watched and laughed EVERY time this man performed on TV. Always fresh material. He could do NO wrong. Larry Sanders was as original and classic as Curb Your Enthusiasm. Miss you Gary!
I met him a few times. In 1978-79 I was a bar-back at a comedy club (Giggles) south of Toledo. I met Garry, Bill Kirchenbauer, Mike Binder, Bill Maher, and Carlin. I drove them to and from the club in my Chevy Malibu to their rooms at motels and condos. Time of your life kid!
Wow! That must be amazing. He is my comedy hero. I’ve only met him when we died, but I see everything I can about him. One of the stuff he always mentions are the Roy London tapes. Do you know anything about them?
@@danielsartorio Garry always made a point of making you feel uncomfortable. He constantly joked that he wanted to have drinks with me in his room... but not in any gay way. That was his genius.
@@danielsartorio His early work constantly referred to his being gay, because of his voice and delivery. Look up his appearance on ' The Green Room ' with Paul Provenza when he turned to Zen Eastern Philosophy to deal with his depression.
@@bruce4980 I’ve seen everything! Also, if you’ve never seen, he has two great interviews. One in Pete holmes podcast “you made it weird” and other in the wtf podcast with Marc maron. I listen to them twice a year.
He was so exposed and knew how to turn every part of his enormous sensitivity into humor. I'm sometimes amazed at how much the Jews have contributed to American comedy in general, and Larry Sanders on his show was just ahead of everything we see today in the comedy field.
I remember watching this when it first aired. I always recall the L.A. cops joke whenever the Rodney King incident comes up. Also, to this day,, I still use that joke about every rental car is a four wheel drive...
Thanks for sharing this. It's been too long and I really appreciate it! Gary was something special. I'll be laughing all day for this one. Thanks and rest well Gary!
The coolest thing about these old videos is the chance to reassess comedians from back in the day. Back then I never thought Shandling was funny. Then I grew out of my self-important hipster phase, and boy was I mistaken.
Yes! And while he could anticipate being asked his age, he had a good Garry Shandling line that he was 41 and life begins at 20. Seamless and so relaxed.
SUCH a smart and uniquely funny man. I watched him in an interview and his answers to the questions seemed oblique but I realized he was seeing more deeply into the question and its ramifications. A terrrific mock-TV show with several fine actors involved.
He is more then a comic.......he is a story teller. An art that is being lost in a world of fast moving rapid fire one liners. People today are not willing to invest their time and wait for the stories to develop into a laugh festiable.
For sme reason I thought he had passed pretty recently but it was back in 2016. Anyway, I've been re-watching a lot of his work, and listening to other entertainers reminisce. He is hilarious, but at the same time you can tell he's just the nicest guy. --And that's exactly what people like Conan O'Brien, Leno, Letterman, etc all say about him. Do a search of Conan O'Brien talking about his friendship with Gary. Rest in peace, Mr. Shandling, you left way too soon.
I've never seen this performance before, and I actually thought " it would be funny if he had a sheep dog come out at the end of the show to tie into that whole story about him in Hawaii "...and, sure enough..... shows how brilliant he was.....I wished I could have seen him do one of his specials .... Heaven has a lot of talent up there now...
This is approximately the time I saw him & Dennis Miller in west Broward County. Gary was headlining & they fit very well together as a comic split. What a great comic, shows & the openness on the DVDS closing out TLSS-✓
I would be happy too for recommendations. On youtube i would recommend you the louis c.k in a comedy club and bill hicks special and george carlin specials are all around youtube
I’m so cheap I waited 32 years for the RUclips
Respect for playing the long game, Jerome.
Nothing tops The Larry Sanders Show. Not even Seinfeld.
Amen, brother.
Seinfeld isn't that funny.
Garry is pure genius. One of the funniest and most brilliant comedians to grace the stage! The Larry Sanders Show was the most brilliant show on TV.
🎯
Based on this show, I'd agree if I liked forcing a laugh & clapping to blend with the crowd.
I also Loved his First show on Showtime! 😊 But , I agree. The Larry Sanders Show was Genius.
The only series I’ve watched through twice…now I have to go watch it again…some people you just wish could live forever.
Was a great show, and great characters! Hank F*cking Kingsly Salty dog Arthur...all of Larrys staff😂 Hilarious
You either understood Gary or you didn't. I got it and I'm forever grateful for the laughs.
Godspeed Gary!
Wow, this was 32 years ago! I still find it so sad that Gary Shandling is gone, he was so funny!!
Rest up Garry and Rip Torn
2 legends we got so lucky to see together

One of the Best Stand ups of his generation
He says he doesn't know what he'll do next, and then he goes and tops everything else he had done to that point with "The Larry Sanders Show."
I loved the theme song from The Gary Shandling show, always made me giggle
Omg He was a fantastic comic and a beautiful person.

Thinking of him on what would have been his 71st birthday . He is my favorite comedian of all time. Miss his genius. Such a funny man. ❤️
Just Loved Garry RIP Sweet Man
Best show closer EVER.................RIP Gary....and Shep....
I love that he had his doggie there... so sweet 🥰
Gary’s material is so simple and basic, yet so funny. Always loved his stand-up.
so true, and his voice and mannerisms certainly help. The greats who deal in 'simple' and ordinary always have that extra gift, their delivery. Brian Regan and Jim Gaffigan as well.

Check out the Larry Sanders show. Feels like curb your enthusiasm but the 90s,
Norm made guest appearance too.
@@Rickydiculus thank you for the recommendation :)
Pure comic genius! An incredible artist!
Super progressive set; still relevant 3 decades later. Comedy legend.

Two guys I always wanted to meet: Shandling and Larry David, creators of my two favorite shows ever.
He was so exposed and knew how to turn every part of his enormous sensitivity into humor. I'm sometimes amazed at how much the Jews have contributed to American comedy in general, and Larry Sanders on his show was just ahead of everything we see today in the comedy field.

That part with the cop winking is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Garry was so ahead of his times , he was such a great stand up
Im 30 but this is better than any comedy nowadays
He was always funny, but he got so much better as he aged. I saw him twice in the nineties. Great stuff as Johnny would say.
"Wacky, wacky, stuff!" - Johnny Carson.
I see "Garry Shandling," I upvote.
This is pure gold
Thanks for sharing this. It's been too long and I really appreciate it! Gary was something special. I'll be laughing all day for this one. Thanks and rest well Gary!
Great dog ..Shep..or Sheppy .... Superstar comedian Gary Shandling.......
Garry one of the best to ever do it. Effortless and brilliant.
Man, i appreciate him now! I thought as a teen. What a dry square. Now i’m laughing out loud and appreciating this!!
Same pretty much
An hour of absolutely timeless material. Amazing.
The coolest thing about these old videos is the chance to reassess comedians from back in the day. Back then I never thought Shandling was funny. Then I grew out of my self-important hipster phase, and boy was I mistaken.
Gary, you were a class act. Gosh the audience giving it UP in this clip says it all.
So happy I found this,,, Garry was amazing, always good material, but his delivery and relatability is rarely matched.
What a natural. Loved his standup and Larry Sanders as well. Gone way too young. Shep was lucky to have met him.
Miss you Gary
AND THAT EVERYONE IS HOW A SPECIAL IS DONE
It's pretty damn close to perfect.
Yes. I'm sorry I never knew him in person, as a friend. I'm glad you came to us, just a brilliant person. God speed, Garry.
An inspiration to so many comedians
Beyond brilliant
I’ve never seen a comedian take questions before. Fearless!
Yes! And while he could anticipate being asked his age, he had a good Garry Shandling line that he was 41 and life begins at 20. Seamless and so relaxed.
What a great show! I loved that guy.
Never breaks his stride, amazing!
With some comics you just stand in awe. Garry was one. This brother died too young.
The thing that makes Gerry so wonderful (besides the jokes!) was he was perpetually worried.
Thank you🌺
Ahhhaaa!! Thats the guy whose name Ive been trying yo remember for 20 years! Thank you!
So glad I watched his show thanks to my dad Garry is the man then and now
Simply a very funny guy . Rip great one.
I keep waiting for Hank to say 'Hey now'.
SUCH a smart and uniquely funny man. I watched him in an interview and his answers to the questions seemed oblique but I realized he was seeing more deeply into the question and its ramifications. A terrrific mock-TV show with several fine actors involved.
Wow! I’ve never laughed soooo much! Truly a genius comic and genuinely nice guy.
Beautiful person...
GARY WAS THE BEST!
And very unique!!
He is more then a comic.......he is a story teller. An art that is being lost in a world of fast moving rapid fire one liners. People today are not willing to invest their time and wait for the stories to develop into a laugh festiable.

is still kinda hard to believe he’s gone…The Larry Sanders Show was one of the best things ever on television…pure genius
Riotously funny throughout and wonderfully poignant at the end. If you love animals, you'll probably feel the same way.
Best show closer EVER.................RIP Gary....and Shep....
I loved how he found humor in his insecurities and self loathing. He was Larry Sanders.
We can definitely see where Jerry Seinfeld and other popular comedians got their inspiration; what a guy! Friggin legendary!!!
Seinfeld was doing standup before Shandling.
Wow. This guy is amazing.
I've never seen this performance before, and I actually thought " it would be funny if he had a sheep dog come out at the end of the show to tie into that whole story about him in Hawaii "...and, sure enough..... shows how brilliant he was.....I wished I could have seen him do one of his specials .... What a great storyteller.
Thanks for this post!
That was great, GOD WE MISS GARY!!!
I remember when he plays Verne from Over The Hedge...i miss him ;-;
Thank you for sharing this.
Fare Thee Well, Garry Shandling, RIP ❤️
Brilliant, thanks for this great explainer
Such great focus, timing, and wit.
This is approximately the time I saw him & Dennis Miller in west Broward County. Gary was headlining & they fit very well together as a comic split. What a great comic, shows & the openness on the DVDS closing out TLSS-✓
His show on HBO in the 90s was fantasic, the Larry Sanders show with Rip Torn
Can’t believe this was never released on dvd.
I have some ideas, .... but can't really specify why I like him so much. Great guy.
This guy is so funny!
At one point in the mid 80's Garry seemed to be primed to eventually take over the Tonight Show when Carson retired. Too bad that didn't play out.
I'm glad he didn't, Larry Sanders was his masterpiece. And Letterman should've gotten the Tonight Show, not the lame Jay Leno.
what a way to start 😂
No flipping!!!!
So clever!!!
My favorite bit is on the J Carson show when he said he had to tell his dog to 'get off the couch'.
I love the President Bush story.
First time Ive listened to him…..he really is funny……….
One day my dog ran by and burst into flames. Best line ever!
I love Shep!
He was great.
Excellent
One of my all-time favorite comedy specials on RUclips. Anybody have any other gems to recommend? (Not just by Shandling, but anyone?)
I would be happy too for recommendations. On youtube i would recommend you the louis c.k in a comedy club and bill hicks special and george carlin specials are all around youtube
God I miss him.
I even liked his movie which bombed, What Planet Are You From?(2001)
Miss that guy..
The end is genius on so many levels. Who in the world ends their HBO comedy special with 5 minutes of unscripted audience questions. Fearless.
FYI: There is a joke post-credits that's great. If you could post that, it's funny! Thanks for this!
