I never saw this episode when it aired.. Garry Shandling was a huge talent-very sad he’s gone. The Larry Sanders Show was pure genius. RIP. Garry Shandling.
Was just reading Judd's book 'It's Garry Shandling's Book' and noticed this clock on page 1 sitting on Garry's shelf along with his most prized awards from his career. Still set on 1:07 PM.
Hey, isn't this a souvenir of Shandling's resolve to do + keep doing 'Larry Sanders'? - He was offered the Letterman type gigs and turned them down as Sanders was a hit by its first year of 6. Maybe he took the clock as a symbol of stopping time on the easy gig?
alas, poor Garry...'we hardly knew ye'...one of the really original, genuine comedic talents, & Larry Sanders is & will alway be 1 of TV's greatest. RIP..Gone too soon.
Thank you so much for posting this Mr. Giller! Seriously I was a comedy nerd and was close to knowing it. Was already a big Dave fan, loved IGGSS and had seen a few L Sanders shows and was bt freshman and sophomore years of college when this aired. I had the whole Letterman episode on VHS but somehow lost it over the years.
Remembered the clock thing, and have heard since then that NBC wanted the late brilliant Garry Shandling and Dana Carvey for the spot. Thankfully they both turned it down (and David Brenner's name never came up) and the world is all the better for the foresight of Lorne Michaels and his insistence of Conan O'Brien being the right man for the job.
I remember watching this when it originally aired. This was a great show and highlights how terrificly exciting Late Night Television truly was during this era.
I try to read all comments. :) At the moment, I’m not able to upload any new Dave-related content, and it’s currently uncertain when I will be able. When/if I am, I’ll definitely add this to the list.
@@dongiller Ah yeah, probably because of the new Letterman channel. I hope you're able to coexist and continue uploading, your videos are much more complete.
I had no idea Shandling was up for Dave's replacement. I missed that somehow. It would have been a great idea. Dave and then Garry. Shandling was really funny and a good interviewer as he demonstrated on the Tonight show. Carvey wasn't a bad choice either but Shandling for sure. Too bad we never got to see that happen. Such a shame what happened. One very likeable guy. A good friend of Tom Petty's whom he sadly died within months of by chance. Great video of both at Tom Petty's home a few years prior. ruclips.net/video/WIvNe569Q9g/видео.html
Yeah, everybody was very confident for YEARS leading up to that, that Garry would soon host a nightly network show. Garry pulled the most Garry move possible, and said well what if I get HBO to let me have full control over a show about a nightly network show.

Gary Shandling was a national treasure.

It holds up too. I just rewatched. Still terrific

Maybe 1:07 AM, I believe it would be set to 'show time' on set (12:30 am - 1:29 am) not tape time

It is a delight to see how capable Mr. Shandling was of making Dave laugh, and to see how much he seemed to enjoy doing it.
Two legends. Miss you Gary
This was a great episode and segment when Dave was well on his way to becoming a King. Garry too. Thanks for sharing.
I remember watching this episode. And now seeing part of it replayed on the Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling bring back wonderful memories.
love how garry side-eyed dave's performance on his show.
That winning grin is so endearing.
surreal watching this after a few larry sanders episodes. thanks don.

Garry one of the few comedians that would speak his mind 👍,RIP 🙏
RIP. A true comedy genius.
Garry concluded his human experience far too soon. He is missed.
very much
It’s Garry Shandling’s Show was a masterpiece of television.
Garry was so underrated ! The larry sanders show is classic! Hey now!
I miss this era of talk show hosts and guests.
11:06 Little did he know he was describing Jimmy Kimmel
I think you should tear this apart like a Who concert.
Great spin doctors jam
... and U2 sucks
“I have to go from here to the Robin Byrd Show, she’s moving” a brilliant line that I’m sure many of the audience missed.
That was a reference only known by us New Yorkers.

Love me some Shandling 🎉
Music was so far ahead of its time in the 90's.. grunge rock was amazing
Garbage.
The Garry Shandling show was a breakthrough, but not without the help of 'Buffalo Bill' starring Dabney Coleman.
There's some truth to that, but "Fernwood Tonight" and even "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" were also predecessors.
dont touch me paul! RIP Garry we love you
Don, I don't know if you'll see this, but I would love to see a compilation of Garry on Letterman, I think many others would too.
I try to read all comments. :)

It’s gonna be awkward, because I’ll be somehow involved with their channel, though nothing to do with clip selections.
But thanks!

we basically did with Larry Sanders
I wonder where the clock is now?
Gary, Norm, Joan,Johnny,Rickles, Buddy , Betty ....they all gone.
Gary dances🎉❤😊
Would love to know the music in the intro .. please help

Rip Garry.
Paul's music at 8:30 is perfect
Awesome pick up, thanks. "Oh yes it is..."
sounds familiar, but I can't tell what it is

What about @6:14? -"Two Princes" (of Late Night), Johnny's two favorite guest hosts.
Was this Garry's only appearance on LN/LS? If not, I'd love to see a collection!
There were more; will do in time.
Shandling too me was like Seinfeld's older but not as successful older brother.
The Larry Sanders Show and Seinfeld are the two best comedies of the 90’s hands down.
And funnier
How did this man die? 66 years old? Ridiculous...we got robbed of 20 years!
He died from a pulmonary embolism. He suffered from hyperparathyroidism.
@@clafong9 ya thanks bro I know how he died it’s just a saying I can’t believe he’s gone so young dude was a genius
Yeah, because there are so many 86 year old dynamic comedians!

Darn was really watching to see Michelle Shocked (joke).
Kimmel,Fallon,Colbert....it's all garbage. They turned entertainment into political garbage. I miss Carson, and Letterman. True entertainment is gone.
