This is hysterical. This one entire sketch is funnier than any of the 60-minute late night talk shows now. And I'm a huge Tonight show with Fallon fan.
Steve was so amazing as a guest. He always had a hilarious skit worked out I will never forget Johnny Carson comedy for dogs . Love you Dave Would love to see Martin and Steve interview with Dave again miss you Dave
Oh my god, what memories this conjures. I watched this when I was 11, haven't seen it since. Back in the days when you had to set a VCR to record late night television!
This is one of the best skits, I mean guest spots I have ever seen on Letterman. I missed seeing this 40 years ago, I was probably sick with a sore throat or something, but it's good seeing it now after all these years.
I've heard some performers mention how talk shows are so programmed and fake, that what's said is covered before the guest goes on, so to avoid that, the top entertainers have other ideas. Bruce Willis, Martin Short, and Steve Martin were the best at going off script for some good fun. I miss good late night TV. It died when Letterman and Ferguson left.
Wow, the way back time machine complete with a MTV reference. Steve Martin must have been one of Dave's favorite guests. Like Bill Murray he always had a hilarious ten minute sketch prepared. What was Brooke Shields wearing? I didn't know she was employed as a page on the show lol.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH - I was going to say the other commenter might be about the same age. But then I saw their name and realized they might not have any scruples on such matters.
I think it's a certain kind of humor. It's interesting but the guy made the comment it's hysterical I don't find it that funny maybe it's just not my type of humor.
This is a great and very quintessential Steve Martin bit. Never seen this before. Thanks for that.
I love when Steve would visit Dave. Always an experience. 😂
8:12 Dave completely loses it when Steve shuts off the T.V. lol
Dave loved being mocked. He could dish it but loved taking it too. 😂😉😊
This is hysterical. This one entire sketch is funnier than any of the 60-minute late night talk shows now. And I'm a huge Tonight show with Fallon fan.
Steve and David are legends ❤
I love Steve Martin!
Steve is really a great straight man and Dave plaid a great foil !
Steve was so amazing as a guest. He always had a hilarious skit worked out I will never forget Johnny Carson comedy for dogs . Love you Dave Would love to see Martin and Steve interview with Dave again miss you Dave
I wanna see the following show, with Liberace and Bob Dylan, hopefully both on at the same time!
Oh my god, what memories this conjures. I watched this when I was 11, haven't seen it since. Back in the days when you had to set a VCR to record late night television!
Awesome idea for a guest. Steve was just perfect. 👍
HE’S CONTAGIOUS!
This is one of the best skits, I mean guest spots I have ever seen on Letterman. I missed seeing this 40 years ago, I was probably sick with a sore throat or something, but it's good seeing it now after all these years.
Steve's ability to keep a straight face is such a thing of beauty.
One of the best things in the 80s... Letterman on NBC. 📺
What a great bit. It is like a chef's-kiss perfect epitome of Steve's comedy.
unreasonably funny. my goodness. thanks for posting!!!
He's a wild and crazy guy.
And you’re not.
Steve’s timing and delivery are amazing.
His throat is soar from all the banjo playing at night clubs. 😂😂😂
He sounds like Charles Grodin! Another of my favorite actors
I had the same thought. Could easily see Grodin in this role.
OMG, this is hilarious. I live in Florida and just got through Hurricane Milton and desperately needed a laugh. I never saw this back in the day!

This was completely scripted
Late Night will never die. Here it is.
We're still experiencing it right now.
I love this; it’s a great video. But, a person LIES down to read and then LAYS down their book when they get sleepy.🌞
He looks and sounds like Chuck Grodin in his nasal state 😭
YES!!!
I thought the same thing!!
Brilliant!
My friends and I watched this live and were totally suckered into believing Steve was sick.
never seen this! a real gem! 💎
I love how all the women have that large hair look, so popular in that decade 😊
Steve is always the best.
Damn this was 40 years ago now…
"Land Shark"
That doctor looks like a combination of Steve Landesburg and Bernie Kopell.
I've been looking for this for decades
Cruel Shoes!!!
Brook looking great.

legends! both of them
Steve Martin needs to LIE down. Steve Martin doesn't feel WELL.
Show was so so good in the early days
Love the old ones....'84 is very Letterman!
You should’ve called Japan and make Dave pay .
Big Charles Grodin vibes in this version of Steve.
Brilliant, from beginning to end. Masters of the absurd here.
Brooke Shields.🤩
19 yrs old.
And her sister “panty”
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH - I was going to say the other commenter might be about the same age. But then I saw their name and realized they might not have any scruples on such matters.
Brooke Shields is a trans. Hate to burst your bubble.
The pneumonic is "Lie down and there."
Oh Steve 😮😊!!
Is that Conan’s doctor from the Hot Ones episode? 😂
Sounds like Charles Grodin with that throat
Steve looks even younger today, forty years later.
It’s always fascinating what people think is funny
That guy really was a doc!
Absurdly funny
Should’ve called Dr. Arroyo. He’s LA’s most available doctor!
Who knew covid 19 was around back then? Wild.
Whose picture is that next to the TV?
It almost looks like Alan Zweibel.
@@doctortheopolis3122 I was thinking Chris Elliott
To me, it kind of looks like Tom Dreesen, although the hair color seems different than what Tom's was at the time.
This was in '84😅😮😊
I’ve never seen this. Only Steve Martin.
I never realized how big Brooke Shields is.
Trans
My goodness, this was from 1984!
"My dog Exudation",
Is that Dr Arroyo?!
Does anyone know where I can watch old and new seasons for free
ha! This was a cack!!!
Steve Martin needs to lie down.
Wow! Dave cared about Steve Martin's health, but Steve didn't care about the show at all. That's a surprise.
You sound like you don't know that it was a bit.
@@marywealth6475 I was just playing along.
He should lie down, not "lay". That is grammar, and probably Steve, a writer, knows that.
Steve was actually sick and should have brought a doctor's note.
R.I.P. Steve, we hardly knew you.😁
Dude don’t do me like that 😮
Steve probably contrived this bit months in advance of his appearance.
Needs to lie down, not lay
That's LIE down.
LIE down, not Lay
lie down*
You posted what was to be my exact comment, except that I was going to have the asterisk at the beginning instead of the end.
Why do Americans use "lay down" instead of "lie down"?
Lie, not lay.
The Love God.
No, he needs to _lie_ down.
Dr Arroyo Sr
😂
I think it's a certain kind of humor. It's interesting but the guy made the comment it's hysterical I don't find it that funny maybe it's just not my type of humor.
Can we just enjoy the skit and not obsess about using lay vs lie?! Good grief. Get a life.
A bit overextended.
Steve looks like Epstein the White in that robe
:)
;)
Steve Martin...totally not funny.
Steve Martin was born with grey hair
What an awesome bit. Remember when the goal of late-night TV was to entertain you, not preach to you?
Ok boomer
COVID in 1984
Hilarious. I don't remember this episode.
Steve had highly contagious strep throat, some staff and guests were hospitalized after this episode. 💉🩺💊
