Well put. He worked hard at comedy as seen in his notebooks, which he filled with ideas, scraps, thoughts. Yet, he is so natural and totally capable of adlibbing a great line. He was one of those comics who was so likeable.
Haha! Yeah. I miss Joan. I remember the week she died. There was already speculation of foul play vis-à-vis the Obamas because of Back-Door-Barry & Michael Obama's man hands.
I see this was Published on the 5th anniversary of his death and the day before I turned 60. The "It's Gary Shandling Show's" Theme Song is the most brilliantly written Theme Song I ever heard Music Composed by Joey Carbone, Lyrics by Joey Carbone, Garry Shandling and Alex Zweibel . R.I.P. Gary Shandling (November 29, 1949 - March 24, 2016)
Yeah Now. This was hilarious. Garry S. was doubling over laughter. And the two of them, Johnny & Garry riffing & bouncing off each other, each one starting a frame of thought, finding(maybe by accident)the punch line, gettin' the laugh, & thenceforth not missing a beat
Let me tell you something you guys already know…. forget Letterman! forget Jay Leno ! forget Dick Cavett! forget everybody! Forget every single comedian on this planet ! This man here…this legend… this next level quick intelligent..whitty…quirky….the perfect host of any kind! This genius should’ve taken over The Tonight Showi in 1992! Jesus! No brainer!
I'll clue you into something. Johnny did love Joan, very much (not romantically), and he did a lot for her career. They were great friends offstage, especially. Of course, she was always with her oft-mentioned but seldom seen husband, Edgar. Johnny admired her sardonic, caustic wit and quick, flashing intelligence, and back then in the mid-80s, when she did herself up, she could be a knockout. When she chose to sign on to hosting a talk show directly opposite his, especially after she (verbally) pledged to him that she wouldn't, it was almost like a knife through his heart, the betrayal. But he did love her.
Gary was comic brilliance. Johnny knew how to let him breath. watch Gary with Leno...Leno sucks as an interviewer...steps all over Gary's material and thoughts.
I don’t understand how people still do opening monologues or political shows. They’re just a recap of the weeks news. Not funny and I don’t want to have the information in my head.
I used to like this creep Shandling, a huge fan of Larry Sanders. Until NOW. President Bush tries to be friendly, asks for help with the Correspondents Dinner jokes. So Garry mocks him, derides him for wanting to hang out.
The most ridiculous pair of shoes I've ever seen on a talk-shoe guest. And I liked Shandling. But c'mon: You're on national TV. Put on a pair of proper shoes!
Garry Shandling was one of the best comedians of all time. He was quick, inventive, complicated, and original. I miss him.
I still consider him my all-time favorite comedian.
Well put. He worked hard at comedy as seen in his notebooks, which he filled with ideas, scraps, thoughts. Yet, he is so natural and totally capable of adlibbing a great line. He was one of those comics who was so likeable.
An amazing talent. Comedy genius. RIP Gary
And quite enlightened. He was an amazing man
Garry was such a good guest, always hilarious.
I had forgotten how hilarious Gary Shandling is. I was crying from laughing!
One of the funniest comedians EVER. He always makes me laugh - and heartily.
What an excellent comedian and talk show guest! He was brilliant!
Johnny imitating Joan Rivers! Lol
Haha! Yeah. I miss Joan. I remember the week she died. There was already speculation of foul play vis-à-vis the Obamas because of Back-Door-Barry & Michael Obama's man hands.
thanks for identifying who he was imitating! I didn't think it was Jack Parr or Don Rickles, for examples.
This was before the absolutely brilliant ‘The Larry Sanders Show’ on which Ed McMahon, Doc and Fred De Cordova guested.
That was a great show!

This was comedy gold. 1989. Sheesh...32 years ago. Point of reference: intel announced the 486 DX-33 processor 5 months before this show aired.
Rest in Peace Gerry Shandling and Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon There up There Making God and Angels Laugh

But I can see why Garry said he was sick of it. It's so simple and repetitive - quite an earworm for the guy it follows around.
Better than the cheers theme song?
Man how I wish I could have seen him perform in person.
I did see Gary perform when he was just starting out. He opened for Joan Rivers at a nightclub in Hollywood, CA.
He was hysterical.
Man I miss the 70's, 80's and 90's tonight show.
Really loved Gary. Still miss him a lot.
One of my favorites.
Thanks for uploading this.

To finish uninterrupted, & they responded to each others lines & continued the full cycle of entertainment.
@@petemorabito1019 : Priceless!
"I'd never burn a flag but I'd never put one out" lmaoooooooo that's so real.
God bless Garry Shandling.
very quick wit, "well... the next time i see you, you'll be with him." johnny right back, "he's available".

Jesus! No brainer!
Legend has it 'the inventor' who didn't make it on show for second time is still waiting his turn in green room.
In the words of the great Carson imitator Dana Carvey "That is some weird wild stuff" very funny.
Sneakers on Carson, obviously really was good friends with Johnny!
Shandling's couch patter is funnier than most of today's stand-up routines that purport to be comedy..
Garry is a natural comedian, I love him.
As Van Halen Diamond David Lee Roth sings " Where have all the good times gone "
"Like his date is so hot." 💯🐐
Ugh I remember this,
"Like your date is so hot."
Hey, she's on the one dollar bill😄
This is one day after The Joan Rivers Show started airing, so Johnny is making fun of her. He famously wrote her off for going up against him on TV.
You can feel the venom in that! 😄
The 2 greatest hosts of all time! Yes I still include Larry Sanders as an actual show!!
This is another side of Johnny - his JR imitation.
Hilarious 😄😄😄

Johnny taking a shot at Joan Rivers. Nice! No love lost there!

Two weeks later....Hurricane Hugo.
Bravo.
Johnny’s dead….Gary too. Eventually we will all be dead.
9:17 A Joan Rivers reference from Johnny.
Residual evidence of Ed McMahon with publisher clearinghouse Mandela effect. No not a false memory.
great mandela efffect residue macmahon doing publishers clearning house
Miss Cleaver , leave it to beaver
Funny guy, but those " shoes " ...
Gary was comic brilliance. Johnny knew how to let him breath. watch Gary with Leno...Leno sucks as an interviewer...steps all over Gary's material and thoughts.
Why did Gary say Ed worked for publisher's clearing house, Ed mcmahon has never worked for publisher's clearing house
A common mistake. He actually worked for American Family Publishers.
Anyone else think it’s weird that Ed didn’t mention that he never worked for Publisher’s Clearing House and never gave away big checks in person?!
Mandela Effect alert.

Now we know where Seinfeld got the look
Those shoes look like first gen Nike Dunks, Gary was way ahead of the game! Easy $500 in 2022!
Those were the first cross-trainer shoes ever developed, by Nike, and made famous by John McEnroe since 1987.

We don't need "sweet people" in the White House. We need Trump.
Did you know that Trump rhymes with Kunt?
No, Jeff, we do not! You know that they want America to be a theocracy and white nationalism, don't you? Saudi Arabia and Iran are theocracies.
