The day the music truly died was when Tom passed away. The band had an unbeatable synergy. To think this song is basically 3 chords. And what they can do with that! Tom Petty forever!
If you want to know how a rock band should sound, look no further than this. The groove, the timing, the way the tones and parts are layered, the way they create space in the song for each other, the dynamics from the quiet instrumental breakdown all the way to full kickass mode in the last chorus. It was always great to see Tom live, especially outdoors at night. He knew how to work the crowd and at any time during any song he could hold his mic, point it to the crowd and we all took over singing vocals for him. I truly believe he let us sing to give his voice some breaks so he could play longer. Tom loved and respected us as much as we still love and respect him.
Same here, I don't think the death of any musician (apart from maybe Bowie) affected me so much, I just felt, and still feel, such a connection to his music each and every day... He lives on in our hearts and our ability to show others just how special he was! As the great man once said... You and I, will meet again... I really hope this is true
The most humble musician on the planet. Loved his fans and never took them for granted. If there’s a rock ‘n’ roll Heaven, they really do have a helluva band!
I miss Tom Petty so damn much. I saw him almost every time he was in DC/MD/VA. I even went to one of his concerts with a broken leg. He was a genius. He made life so easy to see and to figure out. His music, his lyrics and his voice were so perfectly melded. A once in a lifetime human being.
I remember hearing Tom Petty for the first time, And still it feels like the first time... Many many many years later Please let this music live forever...
This song was the song of our separation and I belted it out everytime my husband would pick the kids up!!! We did reunite but he knew when I sang it where we were in our marriage 😉. I miss both my husband and TP who died within a year of each other💔🥺.
The one departed rock and roller I just simply regret not ever seeing live in concert. 🤯🤬There will never be another Tom Petty. Thanks for posting these tremendous performances that I never went to see.
I so miss Mr. Tom Petty, a true American Rock Star, as a guitar player myself, he and the Heartbreakers, Mike, made 3 chords sound like much more. The turnaround of 3 chords with a break, so simple, so elegant, so damn good. What a talent he is, heaven holds one of our best. I'm also a guitar player, and I want to know why Tom Petty barely played on this tune, and when he did the volume was almost down all the way. He creates one of the sweetest breaks in any rock song, with the quiet passage in the middle-and then the perfect, effortless climax as the band crashes back in to rescue every boy who ever stood, invisible, at the high school dance...
There were us invisible girls at the high school dance too. Wish we coulda found each other back then. And so we graduated, then off we went into that Great Wide Open. We made a road trip back to the hometown-I dunno, maybe some family thing/function. And all those girls who never saw you, and all those boys who never saw us, well, they never went anywhere except precipitous marriages, irretrievably broken by 25, 26, couple kids later, old, cynical long before their time: Girls look hard, used up, the guys look lost, broken, mean. And you, sir were spotted in town now smokin’ hawt and a great catch to all those girls who never saw you then but honey, they saw you now. Oh, did. they. ever..... And so do I. Yes. Such sweet pleasure at the time we all need it the most. I am saddened by his death. I am a chronic pain patient. He was in a lot of pain and he was not able to get the proper medical treatment. He was viewed as a drug seeker and he had no choice but to turn to the streets. And he had no idea that what he was getting was laced with fentanyl. Man I miss these guys. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the best. I have followed them right from the start. I lived in FL for over 40 years, 2 of it in Gainesville. There were likenesses of Tom painted on numerous buildings and walls outside UF. He was indeed the Gainesville "Prodigal Son".
I totally agree. I've been fortunate in both the quality and quantity of music I've seen. There's a fine line between it being"effortless" and " phoning it in" . I don't think they had a quarter, if you know what I mean. Shit. Have you ever seen Irma Thomas? She sings with this downright ease and grace, like falling out of bed. At the same time though, she is totally listening to the band. I think Tom and Mike have that. I also thought Howie Epstein was underrated. I never saw a bad Heartbreakers gig.
I forgot all about this one until the radio played it a few months ago! My fav along with I Wanna Know. Takes me right back to early Tom in the late 70’s early 80’s.
I worked in Tigert Hall at UF in the 90s....looked out the window one day and Tom Petty was walking down University Ave, all by himself....was so thrilled......good Ole Gainesville boy.....
Saw Petty in Edmonton, AB, Canada. This was the show opener and it just went up from there. K97 the local classic rock radio station held a "do you know the lyrics to this TP song" contest for a month before the show. By the fifth song with the crowd all singing along Tom was saying "Far out!" in his inimitable southern drawl. He talked to the crowd for TEN MINUTES just before closing the show saying how he and the band felt it was one of the best nights they had ever experienced, and he promised to be back. Sadly, death took him before he could keep his promise. I've seen over 100 top shows including Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, The Moody Blues, Roxy Music, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan (twice), Genesis, Elton John, The Police, The Eagles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were and still are THE LAST WORD in live shows!!
Had seeing Tom and the band on my bucket list. One of the last items. Finally got to see Tom and the band in Montreal on what would be the final tour. Magnificent night of musicians at their peak. RIP Tom and thank you for the music.
Tom has this grace...effortless....in sync with everything....his best shows flowed through the audience and back over the band. Mike Campbell is brilliant.
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
@@bazwookie yes and Tom lived for his fans, in his last show before his death he had a broken hip, was taken so many pain killers, as well....to this day I cry, Tom was a gem of a man..I spent a few hours talking with him, back in 1990..Very humble, very intelligent, and very sincere..I miss him so much.
I first came to Tom Petty in the late seventies, and he and the Heartbreakers were a fresh breath of kickass, melody-forward bar band rock in an era of overboard stadium rock...still one of the GOAT.
Gainesville born & raised, I was at this show in 2006; His last concert in G'ville. Even sat 4th row! I've watched the songs from this show MANY times over. I never get tired of them, and they bring back irreplaceable moments. Godspeed, Tommy!! Sparks in Daytona
I miss you, Tom Petty. I was lucky enough to attend a few concerts. The last time I saw you was surrounded by the mountains in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. You stopped singing and had spot lights on two people in the crowd that you noticed fighting. Your kind words of "come on, let's have peace... and love" instantly quieted down, or embarrassed them through all of our eyes on them. We all came away from the concert thinking if you were not already a fan of Tom Petty you would be now after watching this gentle man play great rock and roll. A great musician and person.
Tom Petty Legend I saw several times they do not make them like that anymore. Nobody ever has revived rock and roll throughout the years! Yeah all he did right was live his life like a normal person. And it will be forever until you see them on the other side? Sure do miss the king and truly the pure rock and roll band not to mention the bluesy feel the music put out? TP put out the real s*** all the time. Right now I miss him much Much respect. Bobby
Not just my favorite Petty song but, in my admittedly biased opinion, best song ever.....it does that much for me. Makes me smile, makes me move and, for a short time, makes me 18 again. Thanks, Tom!!!
We will not see the likes of this again in this lifetime. Consummate American musicianship on display here. This is what professional musicians sound like after working together for 40 years. Steve Ferrone is a marvel and his timing is incredible but I still miss Stan for the incredible groove and chemistry he brought to the Heartbreakers and to Tom in particular. I think of Tom Petty often and what a truly unique and real person he was in every sense - no bullshit - just pure love for the music in the highest regard. RIP good sir. Not sure I’ll ever get over the loss. I’m forever thankful for RUclips for the chance to visit these moments of greatness in time.
So - just found out Tommy died tonight- and just started watching some concert hits here - that I didn't get to see live..Just was comforting and classic and awesome!!!!
@@MrSTOUT73 He is doing well. Saw FM at the Forum a few months ago. Tom Petty. Één van de beste muzikanten die er ooit op deze aarde is geweest. Zo ontzettend jammer dat hij niet meer onder ons is. Zijn muziek zal altijd blijven bestaan. Zo ook you wreck me. Fenomenaal samenspel met Mike Campbell en Steve Farrone.

I think this may have been one of Tom‘s favorite songs! He certainly loves performing this and it appears to me that everybody is at the top of their form! It’s a joy to watch and a wonderful feeling comes through watching folks perform something that they certainly love! This is a fabulous video - and thank you so much!

You know you have an excellent guitar player if it looks easy. And Mike makes it look so easy. But he's one of the best I've ever heard!
Check out Mike play this at the O2 in Dublin show in 2012....simply unbelievable.
My first time taking lead vocals for an entire song was this one. Miss you TP, but thanks for the awesome songs
Mike Campbell really channeled Jerry Garcia in his solo through this performance. Great tune! Great band! I miss Tom. RIP
Chromatics!
Tom Petty music will live on for generations. We were blessed to have him. Steve is wonderful on the drums doesn't miss a beet
Song writer, arranger and performer extraordinaire. Thank you Tom and the Heartbreakers.
Yeah yeah yeah Baby, can't sit when this song is playin!
Let it Rock!
Thank you Tom, thank you Heartbreakers.
All the Best from Bavaria. 🎩
Tom has this grace...effortless....in sync with everything....his best shows flowed through the audience and back over the band. Mike Campbell is brilliant.
Love this song. Love this band. Mike absolutely kills it on that guitar he's so bad ass amazing. So sad Tom is gone. He was awesome
eu te amo patti beijos
Me too. He was awesome! An American rocker"s rocker all the way! Rest in Peace Tom Petty.
A little Jerry Garcia vibe going on in the breakdown.
it's great to see that real tom petty fans appreciate mike campbell guitar abilities!
multi-talented..one of best on guitar...overshadowed
Mike Campbell is pure magic.
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest
sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star
attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice
and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We
LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
true gentleman through and through /fans adored him
@@bazwookie yes and Tom lived for his fans, in his last show before his death he had a broken hip, was taken so many pain killers, as well....to this day I cry, Tom was a gem of a man..I spent a few hours talking with him, back in 1990..Very humble, very intelligent, and very sincere..I miss him so much.
Wow ! So incredibly fortunate.

One of the BEST rock songs EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with you buddy
Agreed .
amen
Dan Meredith runnin down a dream!!!
Okay
I first came to Tom Petty in the late seventies, and he and the Heartbreakers were a fresh breath of kickass, melody-forward bar band rock in an era of overboard stadium rock...still one of the GOAT.
Hi Jim, how are you doing today
Gainesville born & raised, I was at this show in 2006; His last concert in G'ville. Even sat 4th row! I've watched the songs from this show MANY times over. I never get tired of them, and they bring back irreplaceable moments. Godspeed, Tommy!! Sparks in Daytona
Hello Steven, how are you doing today
I miss you, Tom Petty. I was lucky enough to attend a few concerts. The last time I saw you was surrounded by the mountains in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. You stopped singing and had spot lights on two people in the crowd that you noticed fighting. Your kind words of "come on, let's have peace... and love" instantly quieted down, or embarrassed them through all of our eyes on them. We all came away from the concert thinking if you were not already a fan of Tom Petty you would be now after watching this gentle man play great rock and roll. A great musician and person.
Never get tired of listening to a "real band" who knows what their doing. They were all very good individually, but they were GREAT together.
God! I love this song. What a great live version. Saw Petty and the Heartbreakers twice. Both were great. So thankfull for that. RIP.
This is the VERY BEST LIVE CAPTURE OF THE HEARTBREAKERS LIVE on this Song!!! They Killed it during this session!!!
Petty you will forever be in my heart!!! I know you are still rockin' up in heaven and it sounds awesome!!
Greatest American Rock and roll band to walk this earth. I’m lucky enough to see them 4 times in my short life. RIP Petty.
the Gator Guitar is a blast..........!! Awesome Mike!
Incredible song....solo by Campbell is priceless....
EVERY solo Cambell does is pricesless, yes?
@Michele Romeo You’re priceless too ✌️
@@mondoseguendo6113 what does the hand signal mean?
@Michele Romeo It’s the peace sign.
So - just found out Tommy died tonight- and just started watching some concert hits here - that I didn't get to see live..Just was comforting and classic and awesome!!!!
These lads seem to be having fun plus being musical geniuses
Sorely missed, Tom Petty was ahead of his time. What an amazing talent for us all.
Maybe..he was more of his time.
So good.
One of my favorites...thank you Tom for 40 years of amazing Music!
One of the best live bands ever thanks for all the memory's Tom
You are correct this is a perfect symphony of the best rock and roll around and still is.
It doesn't get any better than this. We miss you Tom!
Mike Campbell's guitar solo kills me! OMG
I think he will do well with Fleetwood Mac.
@@MrSTOUT73 He is doing well. Saw FM at the Forum a few months ago. Also saw the original Dirty Knobs with Mike, Ron Blair, Steve Ferrone, Jason SInay, and a fabulous keyboard player whose name escapes me. Missed Benmont. But they sounded fantastic! (Both FM & the DKs.) Cannot wait for the Knobs' upcoming album and tour!
Mike is spectacular on guitar. However, the KING in this song is the timber of Tom Petty's voice!!. He is spot on those wonderful lyrics.
Tom Petty. Één van de beste muzikanten die er ooit op deze aarde is geweest. Zo ontzettend jammer dat hij niet meer onder ons is.
Zijn muziek zal altijd blijven bestaan. Zo ook you wreck me.
Fenomenaal samenspel met Mike Campbell en Steve Farrone.
Nothing like a Petty concert, The best musicians jamming to leave you just plain WOWED OUT !!! You get 100% plus overtime w Tom at the Helm, Badly missed, Awesomenessness at its BEST !!!
Yes. Never tire of You Wreck Me.
Just superb. Dance and sing. I so miss Tom Petty and his band.
Tom being tom. The Best
Tom Petty is the baddest rocker EVER.....Ì WILL LUV HIM 4EVER.....I FIRST SAW HIM IN OCT 81 and will 4EVER remember how grateful he was at the way the audience reacted in Jax fl. His smile said it all. They had made the BIG TIME...AMF HE WAS SO GRATEFUL.......
This is just one of the many songs that this band just showed how great they were. So glad I had the chance to see them on their 40th anniversary tour...they did not disappoint.
I think this may have been one of Tom‘s favorite songs! He certainly loves performing this and it appears to me that everybody is at the top of their form! It’s a joy to watch and a wonderful feeling comes through watching folks perform something that they certainly love! This is a fabulous video - and thank you so much!
Mike Campbell is right up there with the likes of Angus , Page , Blackmore and maybe even Gilmore. He's got the gift.
Great song, by a great group of great musical artists.
