Lol. This dope feind was absolutely stoned on the junk here. He's been a junkie his whole life but he said he only did dope for 3-4 years. LMAO. Yeah right!!!
I've never touched dope. It's for losers & lowlifes. Same with all narcotics.
I worked in college at a group home for recovering dope heads. We always could tell when they were able to get that junk smuggled in because there's no denying when someone's high on dope. He's high as a kite on dope here. He knew what the consequences were.

The tragedy of this... the tragedy of the whole situation... he had a bad hip, it was just awful and he knew he'd need it replaced. And according to those around him, this was going to be The Heartbreakers last tour. He wanted to finish the tour. He was in pain daily, he went to bed in pain, he died due to an overdose of painkillers... because he didn't want to disappoint us. His fans. He was doing it for us. He literally sacrificed himself for us, to enjoy his art and talent. Rest in peace Mr. Petty, never got to see you play live and I'll forever miss that opportunity. I've since gone and seen Bob Seger and Elton John on their farewell tours. Friends and fellow fans, these artists won't be around forever. Once they're gone, they're gone. If you have the chance, see them. Appreciate them.

I went to see Tom and the heartbreakers on 7/2/17 for my 14th birthday, I think that that just proves that every generation loves him and the heartbreakers wether if you’re 100 years old or if you’re just a baby, for as long as I can remember my parents have raised me on T.P. & the heartbreakers music. Tom is and always will be my idol, I love him soooo much❤️ ❤️
think that even through the saddest of times Tom wouldn’t want us to back down or breakdown, so Tom this is for you
Even through the darkest of days and the saddest moments
I won’t back down because I know that that’s what you would want me to do and I just want to make you happy and proud❤️❤️❤️ well Tom, now you are learning to fly into the great wide open among the wild flowers😇😇😇 I will love and miss you always and I will continue to listen to you and the heartbreakers on a daily basis like I always do, I will continue to play heartbreakers songs on my guitar every day like I always do, and anytime I hear something that reminds me of you, I will always think of you and look up towards that big stage in the sky where I know that you will always be playing your guitar. Rock on forever Heartbreaker 🎸😇❤️😭Good bye Tom we Love and Miss you always 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Sweetheart, you have a gift. Anybody who can use words so simply yet effectively owes it to herself to give professional writing a try. With Tom Petty as inspiration, you can not lose.I am marking down your name, and I am going to keep my eye out for you. There are not many real writers anymore, so it is WIDE OPEN. Maybe you too will write songs on your guitar. I am not joking, I hope I hear more from you some day soon!

Great voice, great tunes, great lyrics, great songs, great band, funny, smart, intuitive, on the side of justice and all-around kinda guy you'd enjoy going down the river with. I’ve listened to this man’s words and music since I was 18 years old. When I heard the news, I wept unashamedly. Tears do not come easily to me, but he deserved every one of them. I started collecting his albums as soon as they were released; he was my constant companion. This world, my world, will never be the same. I posted the following words on Facebook that evening ... Thank you, Tom, for sharing your gifts as we each followed the path of our lives, for making it a magnificent, yet all too brief journey ... Thank you, God, for sharing Tom. To those who knew and loved him best, his family and his friends, you have our deepest condolences, as meager as they are, as sadly insufficient as language allows. His was a bright, bold, and beautiful Spirit that will never be forgotten. He always had wings - now they have unfurled and he knows precisely how to fly and is free. Cross over gently to that shining place, where there is no pain, with our gratitude, our many blessings, and yes, our tears, as well. May the sorrow of your passing recede and leave only the most gracious memories behind, the tender mercies and incredible moments of laughter resplendent with joy, all of those precious times of your life among us, such a wonderful and marvelous thing to behold. Your music inspired so much of my own writing over the years; your presence gave us all the courage to reach for the stars. Thank you for Being. I often become overwhelmed with memories, emotions, deep seated emotions of the roller coaster 60’s and 70s....my forgotten 80s and 90s and 2000s....too busy i guess....and cry for the mourning of those days....sad/happy.....the music and folks that i dont remember NOT being there...thought they were timeless....youth I suppose....and the hope that comes with it.

As I read through the comments while listening to what I considered to be one of the most influential & definitive songs that embodies the purest essence of and captures the true spirit that solidifies Rock n Roll’s status as one of mankind’s greatest accomplishments and most significant contributions for all of humanity to enjoy. The Genre of Rock n Roll has stood up to the test of time which in my opinion must take place to be considered qualified as a proper determinant of Greatness. while throughout the history of Rock n Roll Music there were some Dark Times that threatened the Authenticity of our beloved medium such as Disco, New Wave, New Age although around the same time Punk had been Labeled “Punk Rock” several songs immediately come to mind that to seem a lot more like I don’t know what to call it but definitely not even approaching what could be considered Rock. Hi Whispering Eagle,
Well said. I was recently saying the same thing to my mother. This isn't the world I grew up in, and I don't recognize it anymore. There's far more road behind me than there is before me. It's almost over and I'm glad, I feel like a dinosaur that doesn't belong here anymore. The only rock & roll on the radio is on the oldies stations. We wanted our MTV, but now the only music videos are here on RUclips.
Rest In Peace Tom Petty, you are truly missed.

      @Joe Blow Hi!
Well said. Yes we did grow up with the best music of all time.
Many years ago I was over at a friend's house we were playing double solitaire. Her son's friends came by waiting for him to get home. She had the oldies radio station on, and we were singing along with the song, same as we have for years. One of the kids noticed, she asked what kind of music it was she liked it, and couldn't believe us old folks knew all of the words. LOL!!! We had to explain rock and roll, and the song was about as old as she was. She had never heard it before. (Say what?) Half hour later we had new rock fans. I don't know what these kids parents had been listening to.
When at red lights if there's a young person next to me, I crank up the rock, to share the music. They need to learn. 😁
      Take care, stay safe.
      ☺️ ✌️ 🖖 😷

Just watched "Running Down A Dream" on Netflix and it really made me realize that this guy really was a stud, and belongs in the same category with the best of em. He stood up to record company's, and anyone when he thought something was BS. I can now totally see why he was so respected by George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and so many rock icons that were the pioneers of rocknroll as we know it. We lost a great man!

That's cool that you met him! I met Jim Ladd at the Fleetwood Mac concert in 97' and he was cool and he told me about all the different rockers he knew and said Petty was one of the coolest and most down to earth, so I believe it. I saw him about 5x but the show I remember most was in the summer of 1988 at the Pacific Amp in Costa Mesa CA. It's too bad that he passed so young and after working so hard for the last 50 years!

Carol LaMontagne yeah a loving warm sharing human being. At first, we were just yakking. I had no idea who he was. I was just standing there, and he walks up So How Ya Doin? in a jovial voice! The best scene in Runnin' Down a Dream, that shows what a genuine, real guy he was, was the argument in the studio with 2 record company guys, who wanted Roger McGuinn to sing a song they had given him. Tom went apeshit, with the classic line "I could smoke a joint and write better than that." And "Are you two getting a kick back for this song?" Tom saw right through them.

My grief is building as time passes. When I first heard I was saddened, in the wake of the Vegas tragedy, but the last few days I'm breaking down more and more, watching this video, reading these comments, hearing songs on the radio. We've lost some big names in the last couple years, all which saddened me but none which hit me like this. Just reflecting back on his music which was always with me throughout the last 4 decades ( I'm 58 ), always quality, soulful. I guess I didn't realize how much he meant to me, cause I'm not a weeper. Hope he knows how much he's loved and appreciated, and how much he'll be missed.

Just watched "Videos and Other Stuff" for the first time in around 2 decades. He was hilarious, knowledgeable, and had music like no other. The genuineness of punk rock, the gothic rusticism of American folk, and the neverending spirit of the blues. Rock on, Tom. Godspeed.

So sad! One of the Greatest song writers, performers, musicians, axe-slingers of all time! He played quite the influence musically on me growing up in the 70's-80's-90's I regret never seeing T.P & t Hb.'s live, although I did Love the music records, tapes, cd's, dvd concerts piped through the stereo & surround systems, radio etc. being pumped out over the last 40+ years, One of the hardest working musician's and bands ever!I used to say that to my buddies back in the day how they would pump out records & hits about every year since the mid- late 70's on, kinda like Rush (don't get me started) & others. Awesome songs, video's etc.
Tom you will be sorely missed Bro RIP!
As a side note I had an ex-girlfriend years ago who was obsessed with Rob Thomas- Matchbox 20 so we went to see them a few times in the late 90's-early 2kish, I wasn't a big fan then but have grown to like them OK , once saw them w/ Everclear opening which I enjoyed, anyways don't remember exactly when or which show now but it was in Columbus,Oh. & Rob Thomas came out later in the show maybe a closing song I think? Starting talking (not verbatim) but something about like "you ever have one of those songs that's just so great and special that you love , That is so great & effected your life so much you just wish you had wrote it yourself? Well here is that song" & They played American Girl & it was a pretty awesome cover really, my favorite part! Pretty good show, I always had more respect for them & Rob after that being such a Petty fan!
It was I think they're(TP & t Hb's) 1st big hit, I know it was the 1st song on the greatest hits CD I have had for over probably 25 yrs. A few of the later songs on it was Mary Jane's LD, Into the Great wide open, etc. I think it was released in 93, It was a huge success as w all the other songs on there * I thought they were old then & had been around forever lol, I was just a kid really, a young man. My God time fly's! Enjoy life before it's over!
So as far as American girl goes it being the 1st big hit from 1976 & last literally Tom Petty ever played, over 40 years it had come full circle from the beginning of his career to his last dance or performance on stage!
