We saw him in concert 4 months before he passed. Such a great night.
I wake up sometimes and remember he’s gone and I want to go right back to bed.
Same. Complete shock when he passed.
Totally agree. Toms unexpected passing left a huge hole in the world.
I was 17 and in that crowd. The worst thing about being young is, you don’t really know the big moments in your life when they’re happening. (Sure, we’ll have concerts like this all the time!) Yeah, right. One of the highlights in a day full of highlights.
18 and in that crowd
Amazing!!!
DUDE! How cool was it?
@@billystutz55 technically it was not as hell until they turned on the fire hoses. But it was one of the best days of my life. To be 17 again …

1:10 Tom flipin the bird to 1.9 billion live viewers. Rock n Roll, man.
No he was flippin the bird at me...I went back in time from 2018 to 1985 I gave my younger version of me..14 at the time .. my iPhone and he took a picture of tom ..! While I held a sign that said YOUR MUSIC SUCKS..! I’ve never felt so proud from getting the finger from Tom Petty..! Wow!..:)
Ricardo Torres wow....
Yeah ..even stranger Scott me and my younger version of me ..went back stage saw Madonna..drinking on Pepsi ..went up to her introduced myself...showed my iPhone..went to RUclips ..to show her what she look like at 60
..she fainted ..me and my younger version stole her panties I went back in time in 1994 gave them to Dave Letterman ...! And that’s how the hatred between the 2 started ..on his show in 1994 ..! They didn't know it was me..! Man time traveling is cool..!
Tom Petty said he was flipping someone off backstage. He said that the song was a last-minute addition when the band realised that they would be the first act to play the American side of the concert after the London finale and "since this is, after all, JFK Stadium"
Nah he was flipping me off I’m pretty sure!
"American Girl" will always be an anthem for all of us women who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s. Tom will always have a place in our hearts.
Agreed. We had the best music.
Only for girls in the usa !,,,,
I would second that. He liked women we were people. I survived that period not unscathed so yes absolutely.
@@EvelynBaron Me, too. The biggest heartbreak of my life started in the '70s. Still, I loved the time period. Most of my music reflects it. Take care! G.

Woooooooooooooooow~ 부럽다 >,.
I was there. I remember it was brutally HOT
I'm 51 and this song makes me feel good like it did almost 40 years ago. RIP Tom.
Mike Campbell is the most underrated guitarist in history.
Spencer Morgan no sir.. that’d be MICK MARS
@@Mostafa20268 everyone knows who Clapton and Harrison are

Indeed yes!
He’s underrated for sure. If Tom was the motor of this band Mike was the gas!
Tom doing his thing doesn't get any better than this fans truly miss this icon.
I'm 65 so I've listened to this band from the beginning. I never could fully understand when people would get distraught when celebrities passed away. When Tom passed, it hurt deeply and I'm fairly sure I shed a tear or two. I realized I was mourning for myself as well, for the 40+ years that have passed since I first heard this song. This was a great musician and a road map of my life.
I think Tom would love to of heard about the day my two teenage boys were in the car with their mother. She likes pop and keeps up with most of it. She was going through the radio channels this day and went past one and both boys said, "Go back, that was Tom Petty." That was a sign I've done something right as a dad.
amazing comment brother
We don't have to know them personally to be lovingly touched in musical and magical ways where we have pure bliss!
São essas simples coisas que fazemos que marcam profundamente nossos corações...parabéns...
Damn I miss Tom petty. We are losing, and have lost so many wonderful artists. Rest, Tom petty . Mr. and Mrs. WARD.
I was just thinking the same thing while listening to this
Life is so short bud
I agree.
Turn on Petty at anytime, instant happiness.
If this song was released today, there would be a huge audience for it. Timeless.🌌🌠
All of us that know the world has gone mad.
People today don't deserve it.
I'm sorry sir, but you are wrong. If this song was released today it would not even get played on the radio. And how dare you think that anything should deter the radio stations from pushing taylor swift down the throats of the idiot masses. The reason that you and I love this is that we are older and were allowed to have free thought when we were young.
@@stevendimmock4791 Listen to Rick Beato. He has a reasoned point of view you would appreciate. And let's all be ... calm.
Tom Petty was the epitome of what the American classic rock-n-roll artist should look, and sound like.

Oh how I loved Tom Petty. I finally went to see him not long before he passed. I went alone. I did not care. Just had been on my bucket list for so long! When life gets tough, Tom Petty pulls me back from the deep end. RIP you talented man. You were in the soundtrack of my life!
I have to believe that Tom Petty is in heaven with a harem of millions of women and I want to join their ranks when I die!
One of the great rock and roll songs of all time.
It’s up there for sure! 25 but like this music over my generations music.
@@jamesr2164id say, like Bo Diddley’s who do you love and iggy pop’s The Passenger it’s one of the most copied tunes out there
One of the most fun concerts I ever went to was Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in Milwaukee on July 5th, 2017, with my dad. It was a 40th anniversary tour so they played only the hits, and the whole audience was just dancing and singing and you could smell the weed that was a few rows down. It was a feel-good concert that was so much fun, and sadly he passed away just a few months later. Still one of my all time favorite memories, and the concert alone definitely made Tom Petty my favorite rock star!
I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on Damn the The Torpedoes Tour around 1977 i think at the Universal Theater and had really bad seats so me and my friend got down to the front row and that was cool ,then the security guard busted us.....but he did not kick us out!Just told us
To go back to our seats ....he played the most of that album, that was before they put a roof on it summer night just great stuff
I saw the tour in Cleveland. I had no idea I was watching the last run of shows of one of America’s greatest songwriters.
I was at that show, too. Drove up on a whim that morning and was so glad I did.
Tom looks like a civil war veteran who got transported to the 1970s then took 10 years to figure his shit out
😁
One foot in the grave, and one foot on the pedal,
Tom was born a rebel!
You couldn't be more accurate.
Amazing Comment.
This is a severely underrated comment lol
You can argue they were the greatest American Rock n' Roll band in history. When Tom passed, I felt a sadness that I usually don't in terms of celebrities. Thank you Tom, I got to see ya once :) I still remember...
Right there with you.

Got to see them live 4 times all around the Tampa St Petersburg / Lakeland Civic Center area good times and tickets were about $ 7:50 to 10:00 bucks beer $1:00 gas 89 cents a gallon weed 25 dollars half ounce

1985...When the world had Live Aid and Aids. But no Covid19...Peace and love people!!! Stay healthy!!! RIP King Tom Petty!!!
AIDS was worse than Covid.
@@BLTKellys That depends on "your" perspective of "worse".....It's certainly worse for those infected, but it's not worse for the masses that do not engage in risky contact with carriers or even by breathing their exhale...Covid is airborne and HIV/AIDS is not.
I wanted so badly to be there! I knew it was going to be amazing and to see my favorite band along with so many other great people like Bob Dylan( we'll just skip right over Madonna) I was 19 years old almost 20 it would have been a dream come true!
I know many of you were there and I know it's something you've never forgotten. I didn't even if I had to watch it on MTV. Sadly so many of these great artists are gone now! Watching this is the way we can still bring the music to the Next Generation!

Tom Petty, the most British looking American ever.
I met Tom , he was the color of creative love and music that reached out to so many people, especially in Florida. We deeply miss him
Wow. What a beautiful man. Remember that day so well
We took our 4yr old daughter to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in '95. She has loved his music since. Truly missed and loved Tom Petty ✌️❤️🌼
Six years before "Silence of the Lambs" made this song even more epic than it already was.
I always loved Stan Lynch's method of winding the Heartbreakers' songs down during his tenure.
Fantastic band: The hammond of Benmont Tench, the back vocals of Howie Epstein and the guitar of Mike Campbell are amazing. RIP HE.
A friend of mine with two Phds who knew the whole band for years spoke to Howie about trying to help him get off Heroin. By that time, it had dug so far into him that I guess he hadn't the strength to get out. I saw a show where he looked so bad I'd cross the street thinking he'd mug me. It's a testament to building neuronal blueprints that he could still play with the band. Really sad.
Howie was such a great addition to any band with his backing vocals and tight bass lines. His passing was very sad indeed as was Tom’s of course. This band was so great.
American Girl was for all of us American girls!!!💫💫💫🩷🩷
This is the best concert. That ever was.

Saw Petty & the Heartbreakers in Hammersmith ‘O’ 1977 - 2nd billing to Nils Lofgren. Tom P & his band blew us all away - he never looked back, becoming a huge internationally acclaimed band - rightly so. Glad I saw them then - they were modest in their initial opening, but it didn’t take them long to show us ‘they were IT’.
Thanks for this clip.

I'm a big fan of TP and the Heart breakers. For some reason though I'm mad at Tom and I don't know why. Hell I'm man enough to admit I cried when he passed away..
On July 13th, 1985, I finally was able to discern "Out on 441...". We spent hours and hours in college trying to decipher what he was saying. I will never forget that day, watching the concert in my shitty apartment with about 20 friends. Oh to be young again.
Was there at Wembley UK.Was EPIC and A good World effort to come together and HELP THOSE IN NEED! THANKS TOM AND THE HEARTBREAKERS FOR ALL THE BRILLIANT TIMES AND TUNES!
This was recorded in Philadelphia at JFK.
I remember back in the early 80s me and a couple buddies went to see him every time he came close to St Louis right around the time Damn The Torpedoes came out. People were saying who’s Tom Petty. We knew. A year later everyone else did too. Then they knew why we were such fans
They really had a great sound crew, you can really hear what made them so fantastic not only the music but the vocals. And you can actually hear each individual person singing backup, a great live performance! They knew how to do it over the top every time!❤❤

Saw Petty a bunch of times in the 1980's and he was great every time. The band was so tight and together. Nice to see Howie Epstein in this one; great bass player and song writer. Petty had so much fun watching others have fun~that's what I remember most about Petty!

TPATH never give a bad performance! My fave band. I love their sound and that it still retains a Byrds influence. Unbeatable.
I saw Tom's second to last concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Watching him I couldn't help think he was looped on something but he still put on a great show.
He was touring with a fractured him and had also been diagnosed with emphysema. I'm sure he was on something, though it was probably prescription at that point.
