    I have a weird history with this system. It came out when I was in high school. I had an after-school job and thus had ample spending money for the first time in my life. I already owned an NES and a Genesis, but I didn't want to miss out on this new TurboGrafx-16 system, so I bought a base model despite the high price. After bringing it home and setting it up, I discovered that to hook it up properly to the TV and stereo, I needed to go back to the toy store and buy a plug-in thing that attached to the back of it for an RCA hookup, making it even more expensive. In addition to the somewhat crappy pack-in game Keith Courage, I also bought Dungeon Explorer, which I really liked. However I was not able to play it with my sister without going back to the toy store yet again to buy the "Turbo Tap" and a second controller. This was getting ridiculously expensive. A few days later, buyer's remorse swept over me and I returned everything for my money back.
    Flash forward to a couple years later, I was in the army when the Turbo Duo came out. One of my buddies had bought one, and he had Gate of Thunder and Ys Book I & II. Those games were light years better than the ones I had seen on the TurboGrafx in high school, so I completely changed my mind about the system and bought a Duo, which I still have to this day. I got heavily into the import scene and bought all the classics from Japan like Gradius II, Ys IV and Dracula X: Rondo of Blood. It's still my favorite system of all time. But I also understand why it totally flopped in the U.S. It was overpriced, overly complicated to set up, and there just weren't enough good games to justify owning one until a couple years later when the Duo came out.

      I had all those accessories including the CD-ROM which was ridiculously expensive at the time. Sold it all for the Duo later down the road. I feel like NEC finally got it right with the Duo, but by that time, it was too late. They lost the console war. Best part about the Duo was that it didn't have any region lock so the import scene was something I was heavily invested in myself. Dracula X, Exile, Download, Valis, etc.

    • @pauljohnson7548
      @pauljohnson7548 6 лет назад +7

      It's really a shame that NEC couldn't figure how to handle the U.S. market until it was too late. If they could have gotten their shit together and debuted a little later with the Duo and localized versions of like 20 of the best Super CD-ROM and HuCard games, they might've had a fighting chance.

      No, you clearly are not the sharpest tool in the shed. I grew up during 16-bit generation and was in high school during the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes days (TG16 is in the same generation). I am 38 years old so...you want to try again.
      Furthermore, the Pokemon craze started in 1996 so it is completely plausible that he grew up as a fan of the Pokemon series. Now, I am not going to generalize nor try to guess anything about you aside from what I can gleam from your wonderful post. It shows me that you truly have nothing to add to the conversation and you like to say vile things to military veterans. I am curious to your station in life as you clearly lack respect and foresight.
      I will await your indignant response.

Regarding Dragon Spirit, it's one of many titles for the PCE/TG that has a secret code that will change the aspect ratio so it's more like the arcade (usually called "arcade mode"). Then when the 16 bit era started they ramped up the graphics to 16 bit graphics do to the two 16 bit graphics processors!! NEC really thought ahead knowing 16 bit was right around the corner!! Amazingly powerful 8 bit CPU running as fast as the Genesis CPU and it even had the same color palette as the Genesis of 512 available colors but unlike the Genesis 64 on screen colors! It was able to put 482 on screen! 241 for backgrounds and 241 for the sprites!!!! Such a great and underappreciated console!!!!!

    Excellent job man!
    I bought the TG-16 shortly after buying the Genesis. Unfortunately I was pretty letdown by it.
    After getting used to playing amazing Genesis games such as Ghouls N Ghosts, Super Hang-On, Golden Axe, and Revenge of Shinobi, connected via composite video / stereo audio. I had the TG with only Keith Courage and Vigilante and had to contend with awful looking interference ridden RF outpout with mono sound. It was disappointing to say the least. I later found out about the Turbo Booster, but no local stores actually sold it. I ended up returning it.
    Fast forward a couple of years.. I repurchased the TG16, for only $89, along with a Turbo Booster Plus. I also bought with it a bunch of games this time around, including the amazing Devil's Crush, Galaga '90, Blazing Lasers, Bonk, and Splatterhouse, and my feelings on it had totally changed. I really enjoyed it.
    I really think NEC would have had a much stronger launch had they packed in something other than Keith Courage, and also had given the TG16 proper composite outputs. In fact, anything after the NES in 1985 should have had this.

    TG-16 is one of those consoles that I knew existed, but never knew anyone that owned one. Sega CD, Atari Jaguar, and Neo Geo also fell into that category. As has been stated in the comments, it seems to me that a bad choice of pack in, and poor hardware decisions led to the TG’s relative obscurity in North America. Multiplayer gaming? Better get a Turbo Tap! Want to hook up your console through A/V? Buy the Turbo Booster! The ability to play multiplayer games or connect the console via A/V shouldn’t require hardware add ons. I’m not sure if this was short sightedness in design or greed but it severely limited the potential audience at launch. Frankly one of the keys to console success seems to be the ability to buy a system at launch and not be required to add any additional hardware for the entire lifespan of the device.

    Underrated system. Loved the small game cards/chips, which could be used for the express.....and loved the anime styled games I played on it.
    The system outta be brought back, like those mini consoles we keep seeing released these days.

    I believe you're correct in Mike from Street Fighter evolving into Balrog. When Street Fighter II came out in the US, the names of Balrog, Vega, and M. Bison were shuffled around from the original Japanese release, with the character we know as Balrog originally named M. Bison in the Japanese release. This was presumably changed to avoid any legal disputes from professional boxer Mike Tyson.

    Oh how I loved my TurboGrafx 16. It had plenty of bad flaws with the prices and all. But 1 gripe I had which I haven't seen mention yet is the damn short cord the controller had! I had to use a kitchen chair or sit on the floor.
