I know the feeling! I am gonna have to figure out how to get these videos on dvd... yeah I’m old school... but I would be watching these the same way I watch Star Wars or other favorites !

Old man here, sega is my childhood. I had every console growing up. I'm on Christmas vacation right now and this is just the perfect thing to watch. Thank you and merry Christmas.
I don't think the Wii is in CGQ's wheelhouse but I would love to watch a CGQ Wii launch video. The Wii takes "pick up and play" to a new level and I like that kind of thing from time to time.
I’ve worked in the industry for a couple years creating AAA games with Ubisoft Montreal and you are the best to explain and give a real nostalgia feeling to your videos! Happy holidays Bro!
These videos are so well put together and nostalgic. Really captures the era nicely. Awesome content. Wish more content was available. But appreciate what is available. Thank you
These videos are So Excellent!!! These are my favorites on RUclips. I really think these documentaries deserve to to called “ The Best” when it comes to this era of video gaming. I was born in 1980... so my video game experience match what is shown in these videos.. this is my younger life... NES , then SNES, then PlayStation.... I didn’t own a Sega system until the Dreamcast... BUT the Sega Genesis was basically a huge part of my gaming world. So much Respect for the Sega Genesis! So much Respect for CGQ !! Huge Fan here that hopes you have an Excellent 2022 !!!!
If Sega ever makes another console again, they should do the Sega Neptune, followed by Sega Mars. Just so they can do consoles again, someday. BTW< this is just a video of re-releasing CGQ's old Launch videos, from 2016 all the way until 2020.
No offense (this is a great video), but you've got a few gaps here. For one thing, before the Saturn was launched, Kalinske actually got in touch with SGI and proposed a hardware platform based on their technology to Sega of Japan. SOJ of course rejected this and it apparently was Kalinske who suggested to SGI that Nintendo might be interested. Of course, that technology eventually turned into the Nintendo 64. Second, there was the rumored hardware add-on cartridge for the Saturn that was supposed to have either shipped with VF3 on Saturn or been available separately for $99. Sega of Europe seemed to be the most vocal about this cartridge in both its existence and its potential release. Everything I've dug up about it suggests that VF3 either was or was not running on the cart at some point. Someone from Core Design actually claimed to have seen the hardware and seen something running on it, so I'm pretty sure it existed in some form. However, I have to go with what Yu Suzuki himself has said, which is that both VF3 and Shenmue for Saturn were running only on the base Saturn hardware. We've seen video of Shenmue Saturn and IMO it looks downright amazing for a Saturn game, I would have loved to have played it. Likewise, from everything I can find, there were actually two versions of VF3 Saturn that were basically ready for retail that never made it to market (I am not sure if the first one used the hardware cart, but it seems likely that if VF3 ever DID use the cart, then it would have been this first version). At least one of them, the second one, would have been a technological masterpiece for the Saturn. Apparently Yu Suzuki really believed in the power of the Saturn and wanted nothing more than to give Saturn owners one final hurrah. And I believed he achieved this. However, Sega did not release the game as they were worried that it would compete with the "superior" Dreamcast port (which was handled by Genki... I mean, it's an alright game, but it was very late from the arcade release and Soul Calibur kinda blew it out of the water). Funny that they had no such concerns when releasing 3 different versions of Virtua Racing or 2 versions of Virtua Fighter. It's worth noting that this version probably would have shipped in 1998, meaning it was pretty late, but still a year before the (US) launch of the Dreamcast. Had I owned a Saturn back then, I would have bought both versions. Having said all that, the question remains what the hardware inside the cart would have been (and my god, how complex would that have been to utilize given the already-complex Saturn architecture?). Next Generation mentioned Sega partnering with Lockheed on a scaled down version of their Real3D hardware which powered the Model 2. This would eventually be sold off to Intel and arrive in the form of the terrible Intel i740 graphics cards, but the basic concepts around the hardware sounds like it was essentially the same idea (maybe it would have worked better in a console, I'm not sure). There seems to have been a lot of speculation that the Real3D hardware was inside the add-on cart. But there's also some evidence to suggest that no, Sega was working with them for a Saturn successor. This was pretty early on, and Lockheed had a problem with delivering stuff on time, so I'm not sure how long this actually lasted. I'm not sure whether this was dead before or after Kalinske contacted SGI. Sega had also been working with Nvidia using a follow-up to NV1 that might have used the SH-3 as its main CPU. Nvidia's hardware wasn't actually limited to quadratic polygons but could in fact do a lot of really cool stuff in addition to triangles, which resulted in curves that weren't otherwise possible on other 3D hardware. Optimus6128 (aka BugotheCat) has a demo video showing what kind of crazy capabilities were possible using NV1 here: ruclips.net/video/Hi6lNEufBmQ/видео.html This follows what was said in an interview with ex-STI people who worked on Sonic X-treme and actually got to see the Nvidia hardware that was being worked on. According to them, it was like NV1 in its capabilities, but faster and more capable, and it seemed very promising, albeit it really wasn't doing 3D graphics in the same way the industry was starting to more towards, and Sega didn't share Nvidia's enthusiasm for quads, so they dropped it. This was most likely Nvidia's never-released NV2 hardware. Interesting to think how the future of graphics would have evolved had NV2 become the standard. Then there's M2. Sega was apparently VERY close to buying M2 from 3DO to create a Saturn successor before they pulled out. There's plenty of evidence for this as well, as Sega did some demos on M2 hardware, which shows they were actually developing on it for some time before they chose not to use it. As far as I know, all of this was well before 3dfx and Blackbelt. Sega was literally looking at EVERYTHING. There was an interview with a hardware engineer that I read recently (unfortunately I haven't been able to find it again, but I'm sure it's out there) where he casually references evaluating all of these different combinations of hardware and then some. It's amazing to me the amount of hardware that Sega was evaluating and even testing development for. Meanwhile their potential console hardware was equally insane: there was the Genesis/32X combo Neptune, the cartridge-only Saturn called Jupiter, the now famous Neptune, etc. I think people also don't understand that Sega was actively trying to develop a Saturn 2, that is a console successor to the Saturn that WAS NOT the Dreamcast. The M2 or Real3D hardware, for instance, would not have been released as the Dreamcast but as the Saturn 2 (whatever they would have called it) and would have arrived at least a year or two before Dreamcast. Also, Hideki Sato has gone on record to explain why they chose Dural over Blackbelt. Essentially they were already on friendly terms with NEC and Hitachi and already knew the SuperH architecture from their work with it previously. Overall it was more favorable to Sega, and from a business perspective, I think that makes sense, especially at the time. However, as much as I love the Dreamcast and think it's great hardware, I think they chose the wrong path. 3dfx's 3D technology was superior in most respects and was already popular in arcade boards, that's how they grew their business. I think it could have drastically changed the fortunes of both companies had they partnered together on the Dreamcast hardware. Sega truly failed because they were not only extremely innovative, but ahead of their time. They were also too willing to give gamers exactly what they wanted. Ask me, a SNES owner back in 1992 what I wanted more than anything, and I'd probably say "Sega CD or an equivalent for my Super NES!" A 32-bit add-on for my 16-bit console? YES PLEASE! What could possibly go wrong? Other than the fact that I couldn't afford those add-ons anyway. But I sure loved the concept of them. I was begging for Nintendo to release something awesome that would beef up the SNES. Genesis owners had it all, or at least I thought they did at the time, with all these awesome add-ons. Hell, even TG-16 owners had a CD add-on! I was missing out! Old, slow Nintendo just never delivered! Obviously in hindsight that's not how the industry works. And with Sony getting involved, the game was stepped up immensely.
I was a sega guy during the genesis days but I quickly went back to nintendo once the N64 hit. Although i did buy a dreamcast on the first day it came out and loved it.
Love everything on your channel, pure gaming nostalgia bliss. Watching and listening to your videos is the closest and most accurate feeling and hype as I experienced back in the day, your channel is a truly brilliant beautiful time capsule and makes it all seem as new as it was back then, you have captured the retro gamer perspective from the time perfectly!!
Thank you for making this awesome collection of videos. I often find myself watching this when I am doing some mundane tasks such as washing the dishes. I particularly liked how you also took the effort to make new video transitions in between each of the original videos to make them more cohesive.
My favorite Dreamcast games were sonic adventure, power stone, hydro thunder, ready 2 rumble boxing, resident evil 2, street fighter 3 double impact, marvel vs Capcom 2, WWF Royal Rumble, house of the dead 2, and grandia 2.
This would have taken quite some time to create, and as usual you've knocked it out the park! Great work! Really appreciate the time you've invested to create this episode, bravo! ❤️
Your content is outstanding sir. Such thorough history and excellent presentation, this is one of a few game history channels I enjoy like a syndicated series.
Crazy that the Sega master video came out in 2016. Feels like yesterday I just got notified that the video dropped. Haha one of the best channels on RUclips no doubt.
As a sega fan boy, I appreciate the time and effort put into this video into sega's history. Thanks. I actually watched the almost 3 hour documentary in one sitting

Excellent video ! Love to hear how different places in the world experienced the 80’s and 90’s . Brazil’s history with Sega during this time period is so interesting. Every time I visit there I am always looking around for master system and Megadrive stuff

@@CGQuarterly WeekEnd. Hope you make more videos like this in future. But you covered so much stuff already, sure its hard to come up with new video ideas. Great content.
Awesome Video. I always wanted to know the story on why the Master System was so popular in Europe and South America. Now I know! I remember picking up my console with Phantasy Star...and that game at that time was $75 at launch! In the late 80's! Still one of the best RPG's ever made. Ahh the memories........
Really great coverage on the Sega launches, They have been out of the hardware game for so long it really speaks volumes about the passionate Sega fanbase. I was mostly a Nintendo kid, but I gotta be honest. I was bitten by the Sega bug quite a few times!
21:21 So, Quickshot had a partnership with SEGA in Brazil, interesting. Here in Europe Quickshot was a very popular brand, but it was mostly associated with microcomputers (Commodore 64, Amiga, Amstrad, ecc...).
Regarding AeroWings, "Blue Impulse" is the Japanese Air Force aerobatic team. Edit: Ah, sorry, upon further comment search, I see that bbfrankie has already shared the info.
I personally think that his English is fine, but when I originally uploaded that video I got a lot of comments from people saying they had a hard time understanding him, so I added the subtitles.
I think the Saturn launch lineup wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be at the time. Virtua Fighter is flawed, sure, but it's still really playable and an absolute blast to play at home for anyone who was first blown away walking up to that cabinet back in 1994 and seeing the first glimpse of the 3D future of games (sure, there were other 3D games before, but VF animating human characters in fluid 3D was revolutionary). Probably the worst thing going for VF on Saturn is the 32X port, which is in some ways superior to the Saturn version. But I still fire it up on my Saturn and I don't care, because it still feels like the home version of the original experience. Likewise, the same goes for Virtua Racing. Again, there had been other 3D games, which I loved, like Hard Drivin' but this was the first time a game was fluid enough to feel like I was playing a proper racing game, and on top of that, the game is gorgeous. Both VF and VR on Saturn benefit from the fact that they're flat-shaded. Too few games took advantage of this look back then, the few Playstation examples that always come to mind being Tobal No1 and Tobal 2 (which has SOME textures, but not a ton). VR is a gorgeous arcade game, it looks pretty good on Saturn, and the 32X version is excellent. I'll take it in whatever form I can get. Daytona USA probably got even more flack than VF, and I do wish the draw distance was at least a BIT longer, but otherwise I think it plays perfectly fine, and the graphics look good, especially for such an early Saturn port. IMO no other version of this game since gives you that same arcade feel. I played this game at a Saturn kiosk at a local Blockbuster and was absolutely ENVIOUS of Saturn owners who got to play this at home, regardless of the obvious flaws. The Netlink version might be the best one released, but the launch version is still a ton of fun to play. I have to agree with you as well, on Panzer Dragoon as the pack-in title. I think the game deserved more exposure and packing it in would have definitely done that. I agree it's a more accessible and lasting game. VF was a huge draw, so I get why Sega would think to pack it in, but ultimately it's a game you play for short periods of time, because there's not a lot of depth to it. Including Panzer Dragoon would have gone a long way to giving Saturn buyers a quality experience that they played for hours. Plus, we all would have just went and bought VF anyway! All in all, Saturn's launch lineup wasn't terrible. It was flawed, for sure, but at least there were a handful of games. Sega should have stuck to their original launch date, for sure, and should have made a bigger deal about including a pack-in title (again, including something other than VF would have helped here). $399 was not an idea price, but had they optimized their strategy a bit and nailed the marketing, they could have competed at what was essentially a $50 higher price point. Hell, maybe even just include a voucher with the system to let the buyer choose which game they wanted it to come with. $399 was not a death knell, but the hasty surprise launch was a bad move and the lack of developer tools resulting in delayed third-party titles was a big problem.
This is a random comment but I’m looking forward to you next video! I know it takes a long time but it’s worth it, your content is great. Also hoping for a “Sega Saturn in 1995” video hehe.
33.6k modem. I'm nitpicking now. To be clear, while "56k" modem technology existed, the actual limitations of phone lines meant that modems would never transmit any faster than 53.3k. Even when connected at 56k (I used to use AT commands to force my modem connection to higher speeds and I'd still get the same slower speeds that I'd get at lower connection rates, so just because you're connected at one speed didn't mean you were actually getting that speed). That is to say, 56k modems couldn't even do what they advertised. And this was a limitation of the technology. Therefore, there was no upgrading from 56k modem technology, unless you switched entirely to broadband. Which was not all that common back then. Even a DSL line was rather expensive and you'd only get like 500 kbps out of it (that's kiloBITS, not bytes).
A lot of time has passed from the time these were produced, but I'm noticing a lot of hiccups in the facts. It happens, so no big deal. 26:08 But in more recent times, it's been revealed that Zillion was actually an adaptation of Laser Tag, and the characters in the anime even wear the body sensors from the game. The Master System light phaser, which was never released in Japan, is actually was the Laser Tag plastic mold in Japan. Another one I noticed was Super Thunder Blade's relation to Blue Thunder. 54:40 While not technically based on the Roy Scheider film, the game's title screen is literally ripped straight from the movie.

1:26:46 - I had never thought of the origin of my favourite video game song until now. A blown mind I have.
I love your uploads, such great work.
Great video Chris, enjoyed these in this format
Great stuff !!
I love your videos and your style. At WE your content is often running in a endless loop on my tv, while iam programming stuff. And i often listen to your voice to fall asleep. Great stuff! thank you, keep it up.
Thanks! What's WE?
@@CGQuarterly WeekEnd. Hope you make more videos like this in future. But you covered so much stuff already, sure its hard to come up with new video ideas. Great content.
I was a Sega and PlayStation fan back in the 90s!
Great Video!
Slight desync in audio introducing the genesis/MD segment. Love the content! Keep up the great work!
This video has one million mega power!
Another banger by CGQ!
Grande Cosmic Effect representando o Brasil!
Tommy Lasorda ranting about Kurt Bevacqua is a different man than the loving grandpa in the commercials
Love your videos man!
SEGA is interesting and will come to watch again
I wish I could go back in time and releave those moments when I first got my old master system
wow wow wow the amount of information in this video is staggering. I could keep watching like no tomorrow. I gotta sub for this awesome channel.
Was there a gamesmaster Tv show worldwide, or just the UK?
Your videos are very very very very very good. More launch videos please. And I hope you get a billion subs
21:21 So, Quickshot had a partnership with SEGA in Brazil, interesting. Here in Europe Quickshot was a very popular brand, but it was mostly associated with microcomputers (Commodore 64, Amiga, Amstrad, ecc...).
I was all sega. Was hart broken when they stop making consoles. Great video, I learned a lot.
Ur videos are always informative and awesome thank u very much for ur content!!
Regarding AeroWings, "Blue Impulse" is the Japanese Air Force aerobatic team.
Edit: Ah, sorry, upon further comment search, I see that bbfrankie has already shared the info.
Thank you for this documentary!
Man I loved my sega master system. The memories!!!
Ahh.. The Xbox, AKA "The Sega Dreamcast 2". One of my favorite, newer systems.
That's dude from brasil English is so good, I feel like it's disrespectful that they put subtitles up
I personally think that his English is fine, but when I originally uploaded that video I got a lot of comments from people saying they had a hard time understanding him, so I added the subtitles.
i can confirm that blue stinger is the best game ever made.
There will be more content coming. Just took a little break from the show, but have been uploading to the side channel... Thanks for watching!
I said "whoa" out loud to myself when I heard that FM sound unit
I used to love playing Golden Axe at the local pizza shop.
👏👏✊ thank you
33.6k modem.
This videos are the perfect antidote to my anxiety.
Glad to hear it. I suffer from anxiety as well so I know how important that is. Take it easy!
Hoping for more of these SuperCuts!
Excellent video. Thank you.
Being "yellow carded" in football is called being booked. Impress us Europeans with that one next time 😉
I’ll try to remember that for next time!
Good stuff. Watched it all!
Go make a video with the info corrected then
@@xwizitrod lol. Do you know meaning of words like "information", "critique", "opinion" or "feedback"? Dissing OP because I'm not OK or disagree with some particular opinion is so retarded and childish I'm kinda speechless.
at 13:17 there's an obvious typo on Super Tennis' price :)
Awesome, thank you for creating such in depth content.
Please consider a similar video for Nintendo consoles
My grandma used to call it SEGER..
Like the English guy.
Love the supercut.
Altered beast is one of the most mature pack in games of all time being only 2nd to Tetris
Recent sub, looking forward to this one
Blue Impulse were the JASDF demo team. I was stationed in Misawa in 93-95.
So like the Japanese version of the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds?
@@CGQuarterly yes sir!
