The third anniversary of the Story of the Gamecube is coming up and I wanted to share some thoughts with you guys about the video.
I'm still amazed that I made this series and really started taking youtube seriously. I started making videos on here all the way back in 2010 with scripted comedy bits. I tried a bunch of different things over the years, but I spent the bulk of the mid-2010's not making videos on a consistent basis. I was in my early 20's and free time wasn't all that common.
Eventually the bug was scratching way too hard and I decided to give video making another run. I started working on a series of videos about the gamecube in early 2018. I spent months researching everything I could about the gamecube in an attempt to make the ultimate series on the video. The final product became more of a documentary than I originally intended, but I liked it and kept going. By the time I finished this series, I knew I wanted to keep making videos about video game history.
As my first video in the series, The Story of the Gamecube is rough around the edges. The quality isn't nearly as high as it is today and my voice is awful. I have no idea who I was trying to impersonate. But the core foundation is still there. I remember having a ton of fun making this series and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. It's what finally got me into youtube as a platform and I'm grateful for that.
And I'm grateful for everyone who has watched this series! If I went back three years ago and told myself that this video would have over 100,000 views, I would have lost my mind. That's the reality today and I'm still as shocked as ever. Thank you so much for watching and enjoy the videos!
(Should I remake this at some point? I feel like I almost have to, right?)

I remember vividly the day I got my GameCube in the summer of 2002. I had gone to the store, money in hand, intending to get a PS2 and Final Fantasy X after seeing the game at a friend's house and being very impressed by it. When I got there, I saw that the GameCube was fifty dollars less so, on the spot, I decided to get one so I could get a second game with it. The two games I got were Sonic Adventure 2 and Super Smash Bros Melee and after getting home and playing them I knew I had made the right choice. I never regretted it and to this day the GameCube is still my favorite game system ever.

I knew a kid in 6th grade named Justin who’s grandma gave him like 20 dollar a week allowance and would just buy stuff from other kids cause he was pretty much the only kid with money. I wanted a Gamecube for Christmas but as the youngest of 4 I knew my parents would never spend that much on just me, so I started selling my old N64 games I never played anymore to him for 20 bucks a piece. After getting rid of Mischief Makers, A wrestling game, a shitty racing game I can’t remember, and the south part game I was able to give my parents 80 bucks toward my present. They went the extra mile and got me Smash Melee cause they knew how much I loved playing it at my friends.

Excellent job sir! This documentary touched my soul and I appreciate your works on this. I bought my first Gamecube in 9th grade and stood in line at a Walmart. I purchased the purple console on that November 2001 and my mother got me the Luigi's Mansion title for Christmas. I had to wait almost an entire month before I could get the game to play it. Brings back so many memories and I still am playing these games today. In 2020 alone I beat LOZ WindWaker, Mario Sunshine, and Star Fox Assault/Adventures. My wife and I are currently playing Mario Party 4 - 7 even to this day. Excellent console.

So many other good titles. I'll probably never shoot for a full collection, but I've got about 150 games, WAY more than any other console in my collection. Thanks for this well-written piece. So I was introduced to your channel thanks to your compilation of the entire series of videos you did of Nintendo versus Sega and now I'm watching your video of the life of the GameCube all of your videos put together, and I'm noticing something but to be honest it probably was something I think you resolved cuz I don't think I noticed it in your later Sega versus Nintendo compilation, but I kept hearing stuff in the background when you recorded your voice.
Anyways, I grew up in the 90s so I was actually quite familiar with the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis and also quite familiar with the N64 and the PS1. I was 13 years old when the GameCube came out and I definitely loved playing the GameCube but even back then I could admit there was some problems with it especially when I noticed that medal of Honor rising Sun which was an excellent first person shooter at the time that game required two discs on the GameCube version while the Xbox and the PS2 versions only required one disc. Of course there are a lot of other games that required two discs, but my goodness we should have been past that. Sure during the PS1 era there was some games on that console that required two discs, but technology had advanced so that just should not have been the case in the next generation but it was with the gamecuben that was kind of annoying.
The first home console I ever bought came out when I was 18 and that was the Nintendo wii. I think I also bought the Nintendo DS or it was bought for me as a Christmas gift I don't remember. Obviously since I'm well into my adulthood at 33 years old every game console I have I have bought for myself, but anyways looking back at the GameCube it was awesome, but there were some things that a lot of us didn't seem to like back then which even included the controller.
I'm not kidding, some of my friends when they came over would complain about the GameCube controller all the time, but nowadays it's considered one of the greatest controllers ever. I think just cuz of how weird the controller was and how the buttons were different sizes it just seemed kind of odd, but looking back at it I realized the design was genius. Making the a button so big made sense it made the controller's buttons all different shapes and having the a button be so big is perfect because it's the button you are going to use the most.

About the stereoscopic 3D: Panasonic (who also developed the dvd drive for the GameCube) made a stereoscopic 3D screen for the GameCube. Nintendo actually showcased the 3D display (which was mounted on top of the GameCube) in 2002 or 2003 on the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Only thing was that they didn’t turn on the 3D effect so everyone thought it was a normal display that could be used with the GameCube. Great video. I still own a GameCube.

The GameCube is the one Nintendo system I completely missed out on growing up.
I grew up in a household where my parents would only ever buy one of the consoles.
So I grew up playing NES, SNES, N64, but by the time GameCube I was a young teenager and I wanted the ‘grown up’ games and went PS2.
It was only well within my college years did I come back and buy a Wii very late in its lifecycle.

The issue with the mini DVD is hugely overstated. Few games used multiple discs on the GameCube and the GameCube version of a game was almost always better than the PS2 version. GC also had a great deal of third party support, especially in comparison to the N64, Wii, and Wii U.

The game cube is one of the greatest game consoles ever:
-it had far less games then other consoles, not to mention pcs

-it didn't support cds nor dvds unlike other consoles, not to mention pcs
-it was designed to look like a clown vomit unlike other consoles, not to mention pcs
Truly the greatest game console ever. It is to be expected from a company that:
-treated and still treats 3rd party developers like stray dogs begging for a bone unlike
-enforced family friendly liberal bullshit onto games and software and standardised and normalized corporate censorship atop of governmental censorship in the process
-fought tooth and nail against cross platforming
-fought tooth and nail against publishing on multiple platforms, practically raising a virtual berlin wall between gamers that won't let its costumers play non nintendo games nor let other platform gamers play nintendo games
-actively hunts down and sues people trying to build or find a way to play nintendo games that requires a console nintendo no longer makes nor support the game itself, leaving no legal way to play the games they have already paid for.

Double Dash...I honestly don’t remember why I couldn’t get into this game, but I remember putting it aside, about a month after purchase. I will say, I did enjoy Eternal Darkness. I didn’t find Melee enjoyable. I could go on. N64 is my favorite Nintendo system. I had so many incredible moments playing that system. Not to mention how revolutionary it was. I didn’t feel that with the GC. Also, they made so many blunders that didn’t help. Introducing that Zelda trailer, then give the public Wind Waker instead was huge. Almost like FF7 being announced for PSone instead of the 64, huge! E3’s dedicated to games like Pac-Man vs., while people waited for the MEGATON announcement, which never came. Of course, this is all personal taste,
Honestly, I bought the GC on launch day, hated it, repacked it, and got my money back. Thats the only time I’ve don’t something like that. I bought another one, later. I don’t remember what compelled me to. Maybe it was the release of Sunshine.

Most people who bought a PS2 already had a DVD player, they weren't as expensive as people today think that they were.
