    As a 90s kid who grew up in the transition from 2D-3D was a Sega Genesis kid, never had a Saturn or PlayStation but got a 64 around 97-98. This is so cool to see the backstory. This type of stuff should be preserved it’s insane that these companies themselves don’t produce full documentary and archives on these moments in gaming. The beginning of the 80s to 90 is important but 94-98 as the 3D revolution is so pivotal to gaming we still have now. We might have VR/AR now but this change almost 30 years on still is the dominant method in which we expect all games to play outside of 2D games built for nostalgia.

Originally I asked my mom for an N64 but Eloctronic Boutique was sold out and the guy swore up/down to my mom that a Playstation was a much better pick anyways -- so that's what she got lol. Yeah those RPG’s PlayStation won over killed the N64’s longevity. The few Zelda titles kept it alive into 98 and 99 but man. I remember getting frustrated that Nintendo had been pushing back the release date. I was out of highschool, working and eager to play.
    I went to live abroad in South America for a number of years for business and first saw the N64 down there at a friends house in 1997 and played Mario 64. I was later in Santiago in the middle of town and saw an N64 display showing Turok and I was blown away by the graphics.
    What irritated me, after the N64 release, is that Killer Instinct was never released on the N64. Not the version in the arcade. If you play the arcade version, I distinctly remember the arcade saying something along the lines of "soon for release on the Ultra 64".

    • @IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio
      @IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio  5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh yeah, I remember getting turok for my birthday and loved the game. Not just for the gameplay but the music of that game is great!
      I was always confused by that voice announcing “coming soon to Nintendo Ultra 64”. My mom worked at a bowling alley in the 90’s and I always hung out in the arcade area where both the cruisin usa and killer instinct arcades were there.
      I was 9 at the time and didn’t have a Nintendo power subscription so I had no idea what was going on about the N64 until it actually came out and I saw a demo kiosk at a Target store.
      Still even after its release I still thought a Nintendo Ultra 64 was out which was better than the regular Nintendo 64. Man was I wrong!

    I have mixed feelings on the N64. I grew up on Atari 2600 and Colecovision, finally got an NES in 87, was a full on video game enthusiast who got the SNES upon release, then got an N64 in May 1997. I had Mario and Turok and initially loved them and beat them both (had to cheat for Turok). But the novelty of 3D quickly wore off and I found new games too big to explore and too time consuming and I lost all interest in getting the new consoles upon release. I still play some old stuff but my serious love of video games died with the N64. I did later buy a used Goldeneye because it was mandatory, and I think I got NHL 2000, but I haven't touched anything N64 related in over 15 years. I'm 2D for life. Except for Twisted Metal 2, the only PS game I own and the sole reason I later picked up a used PS1.

    Always found it funny that some of the biggest goof ups Nintendo made, turned out a blessing in disguise. Take the beef with Sony, if they hadn't betrayed Sony, Sony would never have made the PSX to compete (and get back at) Nintendo. This actually incentivised the big N to push for new tech and ideas just like they had to do when Sega was still around. It was already clear by that time Sega and Atari would not be able to compete in the console market any longer as Sega made utterly weird decisions and Atari... well.. Jack happened, need I say more. (do we really need to talk about 3DO, NeoGeo, or Amiga? they never stood a chance to begin with)
    As for Philips, it thaught them how important their intelectual property was which ensured in the long run that they were able to create a somewhat cohesive game universe where Mario, Samus, and Pikachu could occupy the same game.

    • @ShadowAngel-lt8nw
      @ShadowAngel-lt8nw 5 месяцев назад

      A bit unfair to throw the Neo Geo in there, considering it was originally only made for Hotels and rentals, until so many people pestered SNK about it, that they noticed that people really would throw a ludicrous amount of money at them for this system. Only then was it released to the general public and for such a incredible niche system, it actually did quite well. It sold more units than the Jaguar, 3DO, Amiga CD32 and Virtual Boy combined.
      I'm glad it existed, not only was it the ultimate bragging rights system back then, it (and still is), also introduced the concept of memory cards.
