EGM's 1992 Sega Genesis Buyers Guide | CGQ
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- Episode 72 - On this episode of Let’s Read, we take a look at Electronic Gaming Monthly’s 1992 Sega Genesis Buyers Guide, sold under their “Mega Play” branding. Although they call it a guide for 1992, it’s really a synopsis of the games that came out for the system in 1990 and 1991. Having come out in the fall of 1991, this would have been great for someone trying to put together their Christmas list. Notable games covered include Sonic The Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, M.U.S.H.A., Gaiares, Turrican, ToeJam & Earl, John Madden Football, and many more!

- There was an issue with the autofocus on the camera pointed at me. I know.

Chris, I know you're a busy guy and have a real job and a wife to spend time with, but every time a video of yours is released it makes my entire week. I guarantee I'll watch this 3 times in the next few days. Thank you for the content!!!
I started typing out the same comment until I saw yours. I couldn’t have said it better. You’re an excellent presence on RUclips. Live long and prosper cgq!
Same. His stuff is great.
Amen!
Ditto
Big Love right here!
Glad to see this is back... Chris, your videos got me through a year of chemo and radiation in my fight with cancer (which I'm now in remission!) so I am eternally grateful to you for your videos and its nice to see them under better circumstances. Thanks again! :)
Wow, thank you for telling me that and I’m so happy for you that you’re in remission. Stay that way!

I think you are being spoofed. Someone is here offer free stuff acting as you.
I love these Let's Read episodes (got a big smile on my face when I saw the notification)! I was a SNES kid back then, but the Genesis has a special place in my heart since I played it a lot at a friend's house. And to think that was almost 30 years ago... thanks a lot, Chris!
Hey Marcelo! FYI I just put a note in the mail for you the other day.
@@CGQuarterly thanks, friend! I'll keep an eye out for my PO Box!
wow, another Marcelo. 😄
A new CGQ video, what is this place....heaven?
The channel we didn't know we needed, but the channel we deserve.
Cringe.
@@Gameboy-Unboxings just like your name.
Thanks again for all the fantastic content. I’ll watch this tomorrow as I know it will top off a brilliant weekend.
Thanks!!
Chris, the feeling is mutual among your fanbase. Your posts get us hyped af. Keep it up! We miss you!
Can't wait to watch this. Sega Genesis 1992 is right in my gaming wheelhouse.
Ms. Pac Man was one of the all-time top ten sellers for the Genesis. It retailed for ten dollars which was unheard of for new cartridge games in the early 90s.
Screamin’ deal for a quality game.
your lets read are amazing , i even tried to find other peeps who do it but no one can touch ur voice charm and that unmistakable nostalgic touch !!!
This is going to sound weird but I love this guy's voice/accent, such gravitas and enthusiasm.
Nah, He's that good.
Hheee'sssss back..where you been man I feel like I been waiting a lifetime to hear that soothing voice lol
I just got super excited to see that you've posted another let's read. They are my favorite videos of yours Chris. I've been watching for years man. Good to see you still going.
Thanks, man! Glad you stuck around!
I've missed you my friend. Glad to see you back.
Gonna go make some popcorn and watch Chris read a 30 year old magazine, this is my kind of Saturday evening haha
The Chaos Emerald trick also works in Sonic 2, except you don't have to input a stage select. You can simply play the first level, collect some emeralds, reset the console, and when you play again it will remember the number of emeralds you collected. Very useful trick if you want to get them all extremely early in the game.
Sonic 2 and 3 give you so many chances to collect emeralds though it's still a cool trick if you don't have a Game Genie.
We need more of these 'Let's Read' videos. A lot more please. These are AMAZING and take me back to the 80's / 90's. I remember buying EGM and GamePro and renting games in my local store and playing games with my friends. It was the golden age of gaming.
It's always fantastic to have new CGQ/CGQ+ content. Thank you, Chris! I really can't express how happy I am right now. Saludos desde México!
The legend has returned. Love your videos man. They really calm me down after a long day :)
Gain Ground is one of my favorite games of all time. Thanks for giving it some attention!
I miss the 90s!! Everything was normal and amazing
I dunno man, some dicey stuff was going on in 1991
@@SonofSethoitae people knew what bathroom to use tho
@@cblizard6850 They still do
For the most part, yes but do remember there was only two genders in the 90’s now we’re at like 100 different genders that are offended about everything
@@cblizard6850 This is not the forum for your politics
It's amazing that they missed the boat so badly on Gain Ground. Some of these old reviews are really strange.
Thank you for doing these "Let's Reads". I had most of the mags that you present when I was a kid/teen and these vids bring me a warming sense of nostalgia and peace. I never tire of watching them(multiple times).
Totally agree about Streets of Rage. Its my favorite in the series and i agree, i prefer the music to II.
Aaahhh, that PS1 loading music. I remember hearing that as a kid for the first time and feeling like I was about to be transported into the future
These full magazine reads are so good, I realized I hadn't watched this one yet and it made my day to get to enjoy hearing you talk about these games. I'll be looking forward to the next one if you ever decide to return to these
glad to see a new vid! Missed your content.
Was unbelievably pumped when I got this notification. It’s been too long.
You’re right when you say that Road Rash epitomises the Genesis/Megadrive. For me the top 3 quintessential Genesis/Megadrive games are: Road Rash, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. With Castle of Illusion an honourable mention.
Chris's videos are analog to comfort food to me. It's always good to have a new one to watch. I appreciate it! Thanks.
I forgot about that Andy Dick Sega commercial. Really dig the Let's Read videos.
Gain Ground is one of my favorites... They had a very bad take, but I have a feeling these guys were playing 5 mins of each game to get this guide out for the holidays
✅ I’m happy to see you back, I don’t know how many times I rewatched my favorite episodes. I found your channel at a low time in my life and your videos brought me some peace during that time. I enjoyed listening to you talking about growing up with your mom and grandma. Thanks 🙃
I think I still have this issue. Gaiares was my favorite shmup on the Genesis. And I do remember back then thinking "holy crap! An 8 meg shmup!"
Loved the PS1 startup sounds, those nostalgia slices cut deep! Great video as always dude
Great to see a new video!
Welcome back, great to see you releasing your usual great content! I think these Let's Read episodes are my favorites🥰 Really takes me back!
Good to have new content man! Looking forward to another video, hopefully sooner rather than later.
I love putting this videos on while working. This is my kind of ASMR.
Thanks!
Just wanted to let you know that this has become my favorite channel. Please keep posting new videos. It's the perfect blend of relaxing and interesting, and your presentation skills are totally on point. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
This just made my night.
Totally agree about Gain Ground. It’s a perennial party game for me and my friends, we have a blast passing controllers around after each round.
Another great video! I have been following you for years but finally wanted to say HELLO! and thank you for the content! You have so much talent ❤
Very good ep and thanks to quoted me on GA2, keep going with the excellent videos
Always enjoy your let’s reads! Gain Ground is such a unique game and has persevered as one of my favorite Genesis games. Glad to see it getting some respect.
Double take! A new release from the one and only Chris CGQ. 💜😊 Thank you sir!
Great video!
Great episode . I could watch these all day every day.
Great stuff Chris
Hey the channel is back :)
Reached out a few months ago to check he was ok and he took the time to reply to say the 2nd channel was the focus but its great that this one is back know too :)
Finally CGQ has come back to You Tube!!
Thanks for the 4K quality!
Classic Gaming Quarterly DOES what Genesis DONT!!
Always a pleasure, thanks again for the excellent work.
This is the perfect Let's Read for someone like me who didn't grow up playing the Genesis and still isn't that familiar with the library even today but really wants to dive into it. Thanks Chris!
Chris your back !!!!! missed this soooo much !!!!!
Golden Axe two had samples used in Bone Thugs n Harmony second album. The boss fight music.
50:46 - very subtle Lady Bird cameo
Thank you so much for the video.
The ad at the beginning was DOPE. No wonder it worked! =D
I really like your videos. You've got a very calming voice.
Chris, Love these Catalog|Magazine read throughs. (Wish there was a pdf|scan to read along). Also debug mode in Sonic is really cool, I remember creating tons of rings and all cycling the enemy sprites and tiles from later levels early on. It was cool, it was my first insight to game dev at a young age.
For most of the mags I e read through, you can get a digital copy from Retromags with which to read along. They don’t have this particular issue, but I think I going to lend it to them so they can scan it.
Ironic. I wanted to send this same buyers guide to CGQ in hopes of a let's read :)
Great episode as always!
Thanks for thinking of me, though!
Good to see you back.
Thank you for the video! Sonic’s debug mode was really cool. You could add objects and rings anywhere you wanted, to the point where the whole game was crawling. very cool experience for me as a kid.
Awww yeah! So happy to see a new upload my friend.
That was a lovely trip through some classics. Thanks.
So good to see you back, always love these read through’s
Well something to get me through Covid and my fever-Thanks!!

@@BeB02090 Thank you! Actually broke my fever while watching, the power of CGQ Let’s Read
@@briannorthFW Nice! 👍 That's gotta feel just great. For me that was a turning point.
I was a Nintendo NES, Game Boy and SNES kid way back, but the Sega Genesis has a good place in me since I played at a friend's house. I didn't have it until 2003, at that point, when the Gamecube, PS2, and the Xbox were in full swing.
welcome back. Good to hear you read some new content. cheers
Love your PSX style intro. And lol at the opening Genesis commercial ! How did I miss these sweet commercials back in the day? I was probably gaming instead of watching TV.
Thanks for the new video!! 👍☺️
Thanks for keeping it real and giving everything a fair shake ... Always solid content
I think the 1991 bonus (December) year buyers guide best ever, tells truth on snes in system reviews but this good too
Dude!, I was Sad because I did not see you so active in RUclips, until you tell about your "OTHER" channel!!!, I'll subscribe, by the way, your documentarys are awesome, Thank you!!!
9:53 - That's the Angry Video Game Nerd's trick to racking up extra lives in McKids.
Thanks for a new Let's Read! Awesome new intro segment.
Never did finish Toejam and Earl when I was a kid. Finally beat it last year. I enjoyed it much more now as an adult.
I’m only halfway through but this is amazing thank you for covering this and for being so knowledgeable!
Thanks, glad you're enjoying it!
I hope you just gather 10 various magazines and knock them out in one session. And release them over time for us because this is my favorite series of yours and maybe if you condense a day of it you can get us more episodes
That intro with the ps sound was next level
First off, great video going thru an old magazine reviewing Sega Genesis games for us Sega nerds, but Toejam and Earl is one of the best games on the system. Best with 2 players as me and my lil sister had the most fun with it. And with Strider, I think if you've never witnessed the arcade version 1st, and then Sega recreated it almost 1 to 1, you won't get the appeal. Cheers.
Glad to see you back, man!
This brings back such good memories! I remember importing my first few Super Famicom games from Die Hard and Tommo back in the day. Square's Live A Live, The Great Battle III, one of the Dragon Ball RPGs and the G Gundam one on one fighter. Responding to the, "What they were charging back then," question: The yen was fairly strong, and this was the point at which cartridge games were hitting their twilight in terms of quality versus space, without throwing extra chips into them. In Japan, a typical later-day SFC or MD cart was on average anywhere from 8900 to 10600 yen. I remember paying around $125 for most of the Super Fami games I mention above. I remember poring over those ads (before Gamefan was a magazine of its own) and seeing the art -- that I now know was snipped from Japanese gaming magazines -- and screenshots and feeling like everything was so exotic and new. It's hard to imagine in this day and age, even for someone who has lived it, like myself, with everything being so pre-spoiled by constant coverage. I love how you mention that there were no prices, because I distinctly remember it always said "CALL" next to stuff you knew was going to be astronomically expensive. And back then, it was a long-distance call (unless you lived in the LA Metro). I recall getting permission to call about a Japanese PS1 in late 1994, because when you're a kid, a year is "literally FOREVER," haha. And of course, I was super bummed because they wanted like $750 for it and that would've wiped out my whole savings from my summer job! The horror! Thanks for taking us back into the 90s once again!
Super NES buyers guide read through would be great!! This was fun.
Stay tuned...
@@CGQuarterly 🤩🤩🤩
Hey, Chris! Just want you to know that I watch your show and all your Let's read episodes from Russia. Wish you all the best!
ToeJam & Earl is a Roguelike, released years before the term was coined.
Totally agree about Flicky and Super Volleyball/Power Spike games, unfortunately their reviews give them a bad rep, but they're really enjoyable once you get the hang of their respective gameplays. Flicky is downright addictive, it's mid 80's arcade simple gameplay is better than many other classics of the era, such as Pac Man, Joust and many others, in my opinion.
Nice video. I like the official CGQ "Weekend Rental" seal of certification. That box-art of Axel looks a lot like William Zabka. Also: That Ladybird creeping shadow freaked me out man.
Glad to see you're still around man! Though I prefer your console game videos (I know they are more difficult to produce) these are really fun looks into video game history through print media of the era, and I really enjoy that!
Cool! A new CGQ video and about Sega Genesis no less!!!! My MUSHA game is still unopened.
What a shame for such a good game to go unopened
@@SonofSethoitae I know, but now I'm afraid to, as it should be quite valuable as is.
Well how 'bout that, I was just going to look for a CGQ+ Livestream video to watch and find a brand new CGQ video, awesome!
I didn't enjoy Toejam and Earl at that time of its release, either. I wasn't good at it. I revisited it recently and had a blast!
That opening commercial definitely borrowed some Dana Carvey Church Lady vibes.
Big time.
Great video. Excellent quality retrospective. Thanks for your hard work.
Great video! I really enjoy your perspectives on these old magazines and the games themselves. This was a fun time to be a Genesis fan - just before the SNES was out, and the library had gotten large enough that you could playground gloat all over your friends still stuck on NES.
Love your Let's reads, keep em coming
I only would get the first chaos emerald to get a head start but didn't know you could reset it and do it again
I liked Fatal Labrynth! Its challenging but really satisfying when you beat it.
