- Episode 69 - Nice. On this episode of Let's Read, I'm joined by Coury from My Life in Gaming as we check out the first issue of Sega Visions, from June and July of 1990. Sega Visions was started by Sega of America as a competitor to Nintendo Power, and was an evolution of earlier SoA newsletters.
This issue features a lot of awesome Master System and Genesis titles, including The Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, California Games, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Truxton, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Ghostbusters, and more!

This is the first traditional episode of Let's Read to feature a guest, although Coury and I did do a Let's Read in front of a live audience at Retro World Expo 2019.

Footage for this episode was recorded on real hardware, a Mega SG, and a MiSTer. Just depends on the game. I already had a lot of the footage on-hand, because the games were already covered on previous episodes.
My second camera (the one pointed at me) stopped recording part way through the process, and it took me probably 30 mins to notice. I tried to add enough of aa variety of visual material there so that it isn't too noticeable. The footage is also soft because I had the lens opened up to its maximum aperture, whereas I usually back it off by 2 stops.
Almost all of the information and box art used in this episode came from SegaRetro.org which should be anyone's one-stop shop for Sega knowledge.
The intro for this video is more in-line with other recent releases on the channel. I think it looks a little bit nicer than the simple ones that I was doing for previous episodes of Let's Read, and it also hopefully sucks in the viewer a little bit more.

All video game footage featured on Classic Gaming Quarterly is recorded from either actual game hardware or FPGA-based consoles, unless otherwise noted. As of episode 35, it is recorded in RGB, upscaled using either an XRGB Mini Framemeister or an Open-Source Scan Converter (OSSC), and captured on either an Elgato Game Capture HD or a Startech USB 3.0 capture device. Prior to that, it was recorded in s-video using am RGB to s-video encoder and a DVD recorder. All videos are edited on a Mac using Final Cut Pro X.

I look & read them from time to time just to remind me of those late 80's early 90's days of the 16bit arcade & console gaming & to loose my self one weekend... Its my magazine treasures😇

At 25:12 you’re talking about me that you say ‘sucking up to SEGA’! You missed the important point to realise that SEGA Visions was a North American magazine by SEGA of America. This publication never came to Australia however this Aussie was able to get his name in it! SEGA Fan for life, yep that’s me! I’d written to SEGA of America as their address was located at the bottom of the Genesis advertisements in EGM. I recall writing to SEGA as I was a Master System owner and excited for the Mega Drive and was hoping to know when it would be released in Australia. They did edit my letter but I didn’t care too much. Who would have thought 30 years later I’d be reminded of my letter to SEGA! Thanks guys!

Sega Visions was a free magazine. My brother and I both had a subscription to it back in the day, and I still have all my copies.

I had Nintendo power and Sega visions. This brings back alot of good memories of taking these magazines to school and looking at games we wanted with my friends.

Oh, I've been reading old issues of gaming magazines this summer and recently came across the Game Doctor's column when he came to EGM.
Really great episode. I had this issue as kid, and loved all of the anecdotal commentary.

What is a pro?? How much we talking?? I found the Genesis 3 on the side of the road in a bag with the controllers wires and everything but it works perfectly good. Had to clean up a little bit it was just dusty. Evidently somebody was getting evicted I guess, but it's rather ugly. I got one of those ever drives or whatever you call it but it's the kind of pain in the butt to use. You got to turn the thing off to reset the game or maybe I'm just doing it wrong. I was going to order one of them RCA jacks to HDMI. Will that work for this do you know, and will it look good on a flat screen TV??
I enjoyed this video because it was both you and Coury discussing the mag. I think adding a third person would make future readings even more fun and interesting. Thanks for sharing.
as a kid I LOVED SEGA Visions
We had a Time Outs at my mall growing up: Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, NY. It was definitely not a "Sega Time Out," but just a regular one. It was a really basic arcade with cabinets and ticket redemption and not much more. We definitely didn't have any cool space age features.
Also, I spent tens, if not hundreds, of dollars playing SF2 and Super SF2 in that arcade.

Hey Chris and Coury, great video. Time-Out had a location here in Manchester Connecticut at the Buckland Hills Mall. It very much had a darker aesthetic and sported all of the latest titles. They also had a prize counter for some ticket type games. Sadly, they closed it back in the mid 2000s and put up a carousel.
had one in milford mall as well , used to close near 11pm i walk down the boston post road to another arcade that closed at 3 am
blake bortles I’ve been to that mall. They have a pretty cool retro game store, I think it’s ‘2nd level’ or ‘next level’ games. They must have had locations all over CT. Definitely not the Sega versioning the arcade though for sure.

Yah, this was great to have another person with knowledge of the subject read the magazine with you. Back in the day we would often read magazines with a buddy as we were playing or dreaming of what we would be playing in the future.
SEGA's Time Out was the arcade at my local mall as a kid. There was a standalone Aladdin's Castle up the road, but the Time Out was way more accessible on foot (or bike), since the mall was closer, but man, I have a lot of memories tied up in Time Out.

Great video from 3yr ago. After moving from Jersey City to my current city back in 1989 it was surprising to see a Toys for Joy shop that rented out master system games. It was short lived as they would eventually go out of business.

ROS in my eyes is better than Shinobi 3, but imho Shadow Dancer the console version was the best of them all.
There was a Time-Out in New Jersey (Freehold Raceway Mall) that I used to visit all the time between 1994-2002 and then it was gone. Lots of memories there. I'm 36.

I’m really kicking myself right now. I had both SEGA Challenge and Visions. I kept those magazine for years because I wanted my kids to know what gaming was like back then. However since I live overseas now and those magazines were in storage back in U.S.A. So On a visit a few years ago I threw them away.
I had no idea how popular retro gaming was until a couple years ago. If I knew SEGA Visions was going $50 a pop on eBay I would have kept them and sold them.
Dang, those original Sega magazines before Sega Visions looked so cool. Always a fan of that era Sega logo and grid background.
This was a nice video to go to bed to last night. I used to get Sega Visions in the mid 90s when it wasn't quite as drunk on its own supply. I recall it having a bit of a stronger editorial slant than Nintendo Power with some reporting on the Mortal Combat Lawsuit and a lot of coverage of the Sega CD/32X and Sega Channel. I hope you keep doing these.
We had a time out in Cary NC. Did not know it was associated with Sega. Spent a lot of time there in the late 80s. I remember only time I ever saw a Sega Master system. I recall it was an award for the ticket games. Makes sense now if time out was associated with Sega.
This is a super great video, because Corey owned the MasterSystem, which was non-existent in my neighborhoods throughout childhood. EVERYONE had an NES. i will watch this video twice!
I subscribed and had this first issue as well as a kid. I think i kept getting sega visions well into 1995 towards the tail end of the genesis’ run.
There was a Child World in the shopping center where I used to live and I remember seeing Sega Master System games for sale when I walked through it.
Only way today could have been better is if it was Friday!

What was great about Sega visions was that the first few years was like Free for anybody who registered their Sega Systems just like the Challenge news letter before it. Eventually they did go paid subscription.
In Puerto Rico we first had the Time Out, then it was Sega's Time Out and last, Namco Time Out. We had 2 of them in the island. Great Times.
Made my Sunday watching this. The power base converter is a far cooler name than the name for it here in England. It was simply called the master system converter.

I feel like I was lucky because I had a NES. I had friends with the same that were happy to trade games around. And I had a couple friends that had the master system. And I played it enough to feel like I owned it! I had enough friends with the matter system to know that there were different bioses worth different but in games.
I used to get this Magazine monthly back in the early 90s!
I was just watching Jeremy Parish's latest Game Boy Works video before this one and it featured "In Your Face!" which along with "Hoops" had that same type of cut-away that "Pat Riley's Basketball" and "Double Dribble" had.

"smoke trails," are what makes shooters cool. I remember how cool Warhawk and Panzer Dragoon looked because of their swarm missiles.
I have a stack of sega visions magazines. Some megadrive ones also and the sega cd source book. I love my genesis. I still play my original model 1. This video was great!

there was a Children's Palace toy store where I lived in the early 90s, right before the company went out of business. when I saw the store closed, my 8-year old brain thought all the toys were trapped inside forever

I remember that my brother and I were so fed up that everyone kept going on and on about the NES that we intently begged my mother to buy us a Master System in the Summer of 1987 and we then bugged her again to buy us a Sega Genesis in 1989....My poor mom...Good memories.

Regarding Cory and his story about Phantasy Star II, I did the same thing when I got my hands on a Mario 64 guide. I was so geeked about that game that I read every star and memorized every solution. Luckily, I still loved the game, but I realized halfway through playing it that I had robbed myself of something better. Myself as a little kid just could not resist the urge to read everything I could about Mario 64, so I completely understand.
I remember I sent away for the converter and Space Harrier 2 with my receipt and upc symbol off the Genesis box. It was a big deal to me back then. I felt that Sega appreciated my choice in them hence why I have been a sega fan since.i believe I bought Muff d.......Errrr I mean Air Diver with my Genesis back in 89 or 90. I Cant exactly remember when I got it. It was my senior year in highschool and I worked and earned enough to buy one. Great,exciting times to be a gamer!

So Spider-Man is here on the magazine cover and the Genesis Does ad. Given it was definitely planned for a 1990 release (it was also shown at the Winter 1990 CES), why was it delayed so hard it ended up being a post-Sonic release?
I was on the mailing list because I had sent away for the old SEGA help files, so I received the first couple of issues free. They would constantly pester you to subscribe, but the magazine was never quite as indispensable as Nintendo Power was, so they would keep sending issues here and there, even into the era where Gampro produced the magazine.

Have you ever come across an art contest in one of the older game magazines that featured a Super Gameboy as the prize? I've been looking for years for that magazine issue since I won 2nd place if I remember correctly. I drew Earthworm Jim and remember being super excited that I had won. I had to show everyone. The Super Gameboy was sweet too. It just randomly arrived on my doorstep one day after I got home from school.
There was a Children's Palace near me when I was a kid. It had a facade of a castle so it was an experience for sure. It was next to a Showbiz Pizza too. Eat your heart out Toys R Us and Chuck E Cheese.

I loved Golden Axe on the master system. Mainly because ii had to save forever to afford to buy it and was obsessed with getting it, in the way only a 13 year old can be. It was choppy, but that was due to utilising background tiles to do all of the graphics.
California Games on the master system was the definitive version in my opinion.
Joe from Gamesack hates California Games but I think he just never broke the back of it. Me and my mates played it endlessly, and my kids love it now (which is a true testament to the fact it’s playable)
Though you were carrying the pail of water just fine yourself, it’s always great to bounce your memories off of someone. I like MLiG to begin with! If you can convince Bithead1000 to do an episode that would be awesome, though it definitely won’t be family friendly. Still would be a joy to watch!

Sega Vision Magazine lasted for 5 years man...from 1990 all the way through 1995. It was basically the Genesis's own magazine and when SOJ shutdown the Genesis the mag went with it.
Fun Fact- The Sega Master System released all across the US in 1986.
Addendum- I believe the trading cards were created by fans. At least I believe the tips were. If you notice the card in the top middle *red asks you to submit entries. This makes the cards pretty interesting as it requires active participation in the gaming mag. I had a subscription to Sega Vision from the very beginning and I don't remember those cards at all.
Damn, I loved California Games back in the day. I'd love to see a modern-day remake of it with AAA-quality graphics, sound, and physics, create my own character, etc.
