I think I have said this before, but even still it bears repeating: I would’ve never imagined that watching a magazine “let’s read” would be so good, and in fact I still think it isn’t inherently a great concept... But YOU make it really fun. The presentation, the spirit of the video, everything is spot on. I love these videos. A+
I'm pretty sure I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it (if for no other reason than to give that extra bit of engagement!): I love these videos. Great way to unwind after a long day, and just as good a way to relive the eras in gaming history that I missed by a few years!
There is something about the way Konami was making games in the NES era that they all had similar soundtracks. The midi instrumentation, specifically the drums, all haves signature “Konami” sound to them.
I dont get a chance to watch as i use to, but i really appreciate these uploads, CGQ. An hours worth of content about a piece of gaming history just appears in my subs. You use to require an overpriced cable or satellite tv subscription to get such content (and it was still spare at that) and had to set time aside to watch it or find a vhs to record else youd miss it. What a time to be alive. On more important note: "Asiaton Oleskelu Kielletty" roughly translates to "Absolutely no fat shaming of the neighbors cat"
You must have been easily pleased, then, unless you're talking about 1995/6 onwards. The early '90s were awful for games. £40 or $40 for crappy side scrollers which were largely interchangeable, jerky fighting games, mostly unplayable racers, trial and error platforming, repeating the same levels time and time again... I've no nostalgia at all for the 8-bit and 16-bit era because the games were mostly lazy, derivative crap.
@@CGQuarterly I used to frequent that place quite a bit but the employees who work there come on off as jerks a lot. Been a bout a year since ive been there. As far as you know are there any other video game stores that are still open that used to advertise in these magazines back in our day...?
My initial encounter with Sonic was when one of my friends let me borrow his Genesis unbelievably shortly after he bought it with Sonic, over a weekend when he would be out of town, when I was walking back to his house to return it I unfortunately got approached by a couple of unsavory characters who pulled out a screwdriver on me and pressed it against my stomach and demanded I give them whatever I had on me, without saying I immediately handed over the Genesis with Sonic I was carrying in a shopping bag, still begging and pleading that they just give it back based on the fact that it didn't belong to me, but they just laughed jumped in a car and took off. Upon telling my Mom I really was freightened at what I had got myself into, but my Mom hard working and honest as she always was advise me to let my friend know and not worry about it, but surprisingly to me at the time she didn't care about me getting mugged for the Genesis which at the time was about 180.00 bucks and was something she would never buy for me because of how strained we we're for cash growing up, but she was way more thankful that I wasn't hurt. When I told my friend he actually was the one that disappointed me the most and actually hurt me a bit claiming he didn't believe my "story" and felt I simply didn't want to give it back...when I told my Mom about his reaction she just stayed quiet and told to get ready so we could take care of the matter, I initially thought we would go to my friend's house and explain the situation, ..but to my surprise we headed to a Woolworths we're to my disbelief she asked me what I had got stolen I pointed at the Genesis and she bought it outright, we then walked to my friend's receipt in hand and I was able to not only disprove my friend in his disbelief, but realized how unbelievably incredible my mother was and how loving she still is to me, and being just 13 it was a great valuable lesson and an example of a mother's true love for her son, despite the Genesis she bought was for someone else's kid,...as far as me getting a Genesis for myself I never actually did till I bought one of someone else several years later for about 30 bucks...but the memory of my mother and Genesis live on, btw appreciate all you do Chris, thanks bud👍
Oh wow! i just saw this in the recommended videos on the right side of my youtube and got super excited as soon as I saw it. I set the other video to the side in another tab until I finish your hour long video!!! I can't wait!
Man I absolutely love this. When I was young I spent a lot of time in the hospital and I was luckily enough to be able to have the library order these in. I absolutely remember this one. The cover is iconic and it was a very popular issue.
Really appreciate this upload. Going to relax on my day off with this on the background while playing switch/spiderman. Loved gamepro but I didn’t subscribe until about 93... So I never seen this issue. Miss those days so these videos definitely holds it down. Thanks.
I know you don’t like new games much but you should definitely play Spider-man. Lol anyways, my question is have you ever played or heard of Ranger X on the Genesis? It’s such a late release gem that nobody talks about. I like it that way but you’re chill so I don’t mind telling you about it. Check it out and maybe you can stream it.
great idea, have watched a few of these. Sometimes I post pictures from older comics of magazines on my Instagram. I enjoy these, and you have a good voice/narration
"When these articles go too long and spoil too much of the game." That was always the problem with a lot of the more screenshot heavy magazines back in the day, and it was hard to know how bad it was until you finally got the game and realized how much they'd already given away. I recently did a video covering a bunch of old Nintendo Official Magazines from the UK and man, they gave away the entirety of the first Ocarina of Time dungeon before the game even came out. Had a tendency to show every single stage and weapon/ability for most titles in the review on launch. It got really bad from them.
Mani wish I had kept all my old Nintendo power magazines and Gamepros. Started getting both at the end of 1994 and got them until about 2002ish. Lugged them around for years living in different places and finally just threw them away. God it kills me now
7:55 - This is what I always felt like too. The best ads to me as a kid were just the ones that showed enough big screenshots that I got a good idea of what the game was like. Most of these game ads just felt like marketing agencies trying to be clever in ways that never actually appealed to their core demographic.
I love how you relate your experiences with seemingly every game out there! I gotta say, I tried a couple games like StormLord and Warbirds and really couldn't get into them. That might have been different if I played them back when 16-bit was the best thing available though.
l think Air Fortress is a hidden gem for a early nes game. I love how the guy controls in the air bases. It's the first time I would think of physics in a video game.
Enjoyed this episode a little more than usual, because one of my favorite GamePro issues also came out in 1991. I still have it, somewhere. It’s a bit roughed-up by now, but still mostly intact. 🍻
Great video. So Gameboy light accessories...if you grew up in the midwest your family spent a fair amount of time on the road. A good amount of that time was in the dark, especially fall/winter months. Let me tell you, these lights were crucial if you wanted to play on the go.
Vice: Project Doom or Gun Dec, as I knew it then (because i had a japanese bootleg cartridge), was my favourite game as a kid. I liked it even more than Ninja Gaiden II which was my other favourite game on NES.
Those stickers look great. I follow Steve Nazar on Instagram. I love his art. For those old fogies who remember T&C Surf Designs, the company and the two games for NES, Steve designed the characters.
My Mom *loved* Monopoly on the NES! I remember she’d get on the NES when I went to sleep and play for an hour or two. We’d also play against each other sometimes. She beat me. A lot! It was a lot easier to fire up the NES than pull out the actual board, set it up, deal with the money, keep track of the houses and all that stuff.
I like those reseller ads at the back of these old magazines. I remember when I was in high school I bought Mega Man (the first one) for NES from one of those. I guess my first foray into "retro gaming"...
Wow I saw Toys For Bob developed Star Control. I first heard of them for their work on Crash Bandicoot Reignited Trilogy. Interesting they have been around so long.
I know a guy who worked at Game Dude and he claimed that the people who mostly order/or ordered from their back magazine catalog ads are/were prison inmates. Apparently, they are still their main target consumers, which I found quite interesting.
Great month and year, it was when I graduated high school. I was so happy to be released into the wild. Lol I was totally gaming it up still during that time too.
Deja Vu II was the other MacVenture title you were thinking of. It never got an NES release. Shadowgate was so popular because it was the first one released on NES. Ironically it was created after Deja Vu and Uninvited on home computers.
And yea, I so agree about that Turbo CD ad. My first thought was "really?". Those screenshots that are there don't even look like games! Definitely doesn't make me want to buy one. Whoever did their advertising needed to be fired badly! It's as much NEC's fault for not recognizing the problem as it was the advertiser itself.
I think you'd like Rocketeer the movie Chris. I know I enjoyed it. Sort of a like a classic adventure story from the 1930's. The game wasn't too bad IMO. Great job with the read-thru! The Base Wars game reminds me a lot of Cyberball for Sega Genesis which is an awful football game. I agree with you 100% the Turbo Grafix's ad was a big missed opportunity as they were fighting for market share and attention. As I've told you before, I saw ads for it occasionally but I couldn't name anyone that I knew that had one. Great work Chris, and Dollar Shave better be happy with the effort you put into those ads.
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gamepro should be on EVERY single episode of "let's read" Love this issue and love this episode.
Maaan, you're not kidding about Monopoly. The only fun board game i really played and loved was Trouble! Also, I'm thinking we got our Genesis consoles around the same time. Great read thru. I remember falli g in Love w/ the Stormlord advertisement. I may ACTUALLY check out the game. Totally forgot about it. Also, the beginning of Hudson Hawk was filmed where i live. (By Sing Sing Prison) . Will send a Postcard from here soon.
Star Control was the SHIT my dude. Spent hours and hours and hours in team battle mode with my boys. The ships & the balancing were perfect by 91 standards.
by the way, this specific issue of GamePro was sort of controversial. The editorial staff wanted a Sonic the Hedgehog cover - this new game we saw and were blown away with. The publisher wanted a Bugs Bunny cover - for some Bugs Bunny Gameboy title that was coming out. The battle ended up being a split decision - half the magazines ran with the Sonic cover, the other half with the Bugs Bunny cover. Which ended up pissing off a ton of people because the distribution got screwed up so that both issues showed up in some areas, and people bought both thinking they were two different issues
Some quick thoughts: I had the same experience with Super Tecmo Bowl as you did. I really enjoyed Welltris on the PC. And where I live had the same Good Guys, Circuit City, and Toy 'R Us configuration as you did.
Yrah indeedthis video was very long, raising in sleep but it was interesting that they mentioned many games such as batman, nagaya, sonic etc,,, but those subjects such as region convertors or how to win a sega genesis was really interesting.
You know what Atari's biggest mistake with the Linx was...they should have allowed us to connect it to a TV. The screen is nice but simply could not compare to a TV.
Chris: "My other channel CGQ+" Chris: "Somehow there are still people on this channel who don't know about my other channel" Also Chris: "I try to keep that channel on the down-low" yeah right.
This is a rough guess but I think the TG-16 had more games geared to anime/Japanese pop culture stuff (Well, JJ & Jeff was a reskin of some Japanese comedy duo, Blazing Lazers was Gunhed, Keith Courage was Mashin Eiyūden Wataru) and since American publishers were downplaying the Japanese origins of video games the PCE library didn't give them much to work with.

Totally agree! His footnotes and musings are a joy to listen to. He does a great job. I hope he keeps the great content coming!
Bah, I'm sure the same was said about audio books too Mr. Bladegun.
Yesss I love these videos
I'm pretty sure I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it (if for no other reason than to give that extra bit of engagement!): I love these videos. Great way to unwind after a long day, and just as good a way to relive the eras in gaming history that I missed by a few years!
Hell of a Friday night; cinemassacre rental review and a CGQ Magazine read through!
Man, i watched the same. Great Friday Night viewing.
Oh my god, right?? What a way to start a weekend!
maichiki yiist after such a wild night Im thinking about renting some tapes from blockbuster tomorrow ;)
There is something about the way Konami was making games in the NES era that they all had similar soundtracks. The midi instrumentation, specifically the drums, all haves signature “Konami” sound to them.
Listening to retro read-throughs while playing retro computer games (Icewind Dale). Life is good.
I dont get a chance to watch as i use to, but i really appreciate these uploads, CGQ.

I honestly believe we were the last to have good childhoods.
Base Wars was actually really fun. Loved upgrading my robot players for the 1-on-1 battles between bases. Cool twist on the sport.
One of the video store advertisers in this magazine still exists today.
Game Dude located in San Fernando Valley, CA
I've been there!
@@CGQuarterly I used to frequent that place quite a bit but the employees who work there come on off as jerks a lot. Been a bout a year since ive been there. As far as you know are there any other video game stores that are still open that used to advertise in these magazines back in our day...?
Nice! That issue is my birthday month and I was 16. :) Oh for it to be 1991 again!
Thank you for the great read of the magazine!
I know it's been said by many but I Iove these let's read videos so much. They are so relaxing and enjoyable, thank you so much.
Thanks! A new one will be coming out this week.
This is one of my favorite gaming magazine covers of all time ✌
