You said "Tom Kalinske arrogantly pushing the 32X as the only next gen Sega path in North America and starting the anger that caused many Sega fans to switch away from Sega" wrong.
Fun fact: My wife worked at an arcade as a teenager. There was a Daytona USA cabinet near the front counter, which would play "LETS GO AWAY" on loop every 60 seconds as it's attract mode. The song makes her rage every time she hears it!
I can 100% relate. I know there are a few select people who like this song. But for me, it is so much in the muzak genre that at the end of one listen I have had my share for a while.

Alphons Potters The details about the original PlayStation and Nintendo meeting are vague it was probably we want x amount of money Nintendo said too much Sony said OK Let's find a shit load of game developers.
Daytona USA had the coolest 90s racing game music ever... DAYYYTONNAAAA.... I remember when I first had Saturn, A LONG time ago, I discovered the horse cheat code in some booklet that contained a bunch of video game cheat codes. Yes, people actually bought booklets for cheat codes instead of surfing the internet back in the 90s. I remember it was a soft cover book and it contained various cheat codes for probably $10.
For me Virtual Fighter on the Saturn was a Godsend! I bought the game just so that I could practice at home and then try my new and improved skills at the Arcade. Actually won a few small, local tourneys. Good times!
Classic Gaming Quarterly Just a certificate and some tokens:) It was small local tournaments but the great thing being that I finally beat 4 out of the "five masters" at that Arcade. My only claim to fame as a gamer. Sad I know, but I will take it:)
Virtua Fighter has a great history in the fighting game space. Groundbreaking stuff, and truly stayed great through it’s entries on other companies hardware.
I was born in 77. Thank you for making these videos, and not being a douche bag while doing it. I hold you in the same high esteem as I do with the Angry Video Game Nerd. again, thank you!
Paul Scharlau I have a PSN account but I probably turn on my PS3 once every month, and never play games online. I really don't have time to play games outside of the games I play for this show. :(
This video earned you my subscription over a year ago. I’ve watched it a few more times since, including today. Still a great video, and still one of my fondest console memories. It’s basically a toss up between late night battles with friends on the Saturn, or marathon sessions of Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive.
i rented a sega saturn and panzer dragoon from a local video store . I couldnt affoard 399 I played panzer dragoon all weekend i loved how the plot made me feel like i was in another world. I remember a girl i was dating her sisters boyfriend had a saturn and I thought he was rich

but eventually the system tanked n the usa but there were gemes on that system tomb rater was origanally for the saturn daytona usa was a great arcade port on the system
I had a Sega Saturn.... I almost completely forgot this system existed, because it sucked so bad... them came the dreamcast, but I had already given up on Sega after the Saturn... I think it was around this time, between my genesis and PS2, that I got into Warcraft 2, and Diablo...and things other than video games... your videos about old systems bring back great memories...
Great episode Jibs! I actually got my Saturn Christmas day from my grandparents. It was the model 2 bundled with Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA. Still one of the greatest Christmases ever. played the hell out of all three of those games and Panzer Dragoon was soon to follow. LLAP Sega Saturn!
+K-2 Yeah the "3 Free Games" version! I have that game bundle. What did you think of having Virtua Cop but no light gun? Your system came with the good controller too, right?
+Classic Gaming Quarterly Yeah no Stunner included which I guess was kinda dumb. A lot of things were kinda dumb in those days. I never owned a Stunner either we only played the Cops with the controller cursor. Always liked it anyways, like your comment on Ridge RacerVDaytona, Virtua Cop oozed personality and was at times hilarious. Me and my friends loved that 3 pack. Also was totally ignorant of the old fatter controller. I was the only person I knew with a Saturn. My 2nd controller was some 3rd party Super Pad trash.
Great video man, happy to have found this channel. I'll be 38 in less than 2 months and even though modern games crush classics the feeling we had has kids and teens with these games can never be recreated with new games or gamers.
"and even though modern games crush classics" you're joking, right? Video games have been going downhill since the PS3/360 generation, especially western developed games.
i still love the sega saturn. it has such nice games like shining force 3, panzer dragoon 1,zwei and saga, and ofcourse shining the holy ark and so much more,
6:33 I remember when my parents bought me a PSOne, it had a demo game pack in. The demo included Tekken 2 and Crash Bandicoot. Those are they only 2 I remember because I played those the most.
Man I loved the hell out of the Saturn. My step father and I would constantly go back and forth trying to get a quicker lap time on Daytona USA. It was just a friendly competition we did. Good times. And my favorite game on the Saturn was Street Fighter Alpha. I got many raw and sore thumbs playing SF Alpha. It was worth the blisters lol.
Amazing video :) Thanks for all those memories ;) Here in Portugal we were huge fans of everything that came from Sega.. til the arrival of the PlayStation! :)
I remember Nights blowing away my 5 year old brain when I saw it for the first time. Definitely had a different vibe than my addiction to Sonic the Hedgehog, yet still I could tell similar minds were behind it's creation. I grew up with the Genesis, but I'm really considering getting a Saturn to check out all the great games and hidden gems.
I had a Saturn with like 35 games. After I got a 64 for Christmas though my mom gave it to my neighbors daughter. :( wish I still had it. I had a lot of fun games on it.
The Saturn is an amazing, yet under appreciated machine. Hopefully, you have been able to check out its wonderful exclusives like Panzer Dragoon Saga (assuming you can afford the high asking price), Daytona USA, Sega Rally Championship, House of the Dead, Iron Storm, Nights Into Dreams, Die Hard Arcade, Guardian Heroes, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2, Legend of Oasis, Burning Rangers, and Shining Force III, and Shining the Holy Ark.
Sweet video man. It's such a shame they botched the launch of this machine, because it had far more potential than people seem to realise. It really was a powerful, and pretty capable machine in the right hands & it always bums me out to think what could have been. Regardless, the Saturn is probably my favourite system ever.
+The Unfunny Chameleon I agree. I think that the story of the Saturn is really a tale of "what could have been?". What if Sega had partnered with Sony? What if Sega had waited to launch the Saturn properly? What if Kalinske hadn't been edged out of the company? This was actually a bummer of an episode for me to make because I was a Genesis guy as a teenager.
Classic Gaming Quarterly Exactly. I like to think they could have done better by waiting to launch it on the originally intended date, they would have had more games ready & had more time to market and build hype. But the concept of Sega partnering with Sony really makes you wonder, would Nintendo have even been able to compete?
Christian B I think when it came to the Saturn Sega simply panicked and shot first. I don't think either Sega or Nintendo realised how much of a threat Sony really was until it was almost too late. I think the Saturn would have been far more successful had they not used Quads over triangles like the PS1/N64. At the very least it would have helped third parties. But yeah, hindsight is a bitch.
Bug! that game was fun. I traded in everything I had to get the saturn on launch day. gameboy, gamegear, snes, genesis. The good ol days. Fighters megamix was serious business.
I loved Sega products. I am in my late 30's and experienced everything that was discussed in the video. I was so gun-ho for Sega, I (My Parents!) bought a 32X and a Sega CD! That system was a complete mess of wires and ugliness. I skipped buying the Saturn for a Play Station instead felling burned by 2 failed Sega products. I am now a loyal Play Station player. (With a Wii for the kids.) Love your shows.
Me too same age, had mega CD borrowed from my uncle which I didn't like because everything he had was poor graphic wise. Managed to play a 32X at gamescon two years ago and thought it pretty average. And then I remember having a Saturn at 13 my mum bought me and like a fool a swapped it a year later for snes. Gobshite. Missed it straight away.
You went down the same path as me. I'm 37 and I never had the 32x or sega cd. But bought a playstation ( refurbish from funcoland) and never looked back.
22:26 "much like a visiting out of town relative it manage to wear out its welcome before to long". Jajaja great scrip, man. I think this is the best video on youtube about the Sega Saturn.
The in-fighting between the Japanese branch and American branch will never cease to amaze me. I'm not going to say Sega would still be making home consoles if it hadn't happened but maybe there's a chance, if Sega of Japan had tried to improve and work with SoA, that Sega would still be a hardware and software manufacturer.
james silver Oh, I see. Cool. Yeah I'm not familiar with the European launch lineup. Here the N64 launched with Super MArio 64 and Pilotwings 64, and that's it!
My biggest regret was selling my Sega Genesis, saving my money for over a year and buying an SNES, all on claims of far better graphics. I dont regret however, saving for over 2 years, working in landscaping, yardwork etc. to buy my Sony PlayStation. I played the demo disk for over a year :)
I always felt like the Saturn was a regret as a kid because I was surrounded by people with a Playstation. Now as an adult, my biggest regret was selling my perfectly working Saturn. I want it back. :(
All right CGQ, thank you for finally bringing out another one of these Launch Spectaculars! I've been waiting since August for another one!!! I brought my Sega Saturn to Chicago to play Saturn Bomberman ( multitap too ) with my brothers ( in s-video mode ). Please keep delivering these well spoken, well informed ( with just enough rhetoric ) to the table! I really hope you continue the yearly breakdown of game releases ( Genesis 1990, 91, 92 etc ) because I truly love that format, and I hope you do the same for the TG-16, Playstation etc!!
Thank you for making this video. You brought me back to summer of 8th grade entering freshman year. I loved pebble beach, virtual cop, Daytona, virtual fighter, some baseball game where the Mariners were the best team by far, nights, and that clock game. The fate of my saturn was my bro let a friend borrow it. He NEVER gave it back. Im subbing to this channel.
The 3-D games they were able to make are SO impressive for the time. The ability for them to do what they did with that hardware is nothing short of wizardry. Burning Rangers is a personal favorite. Obviously Nights into Dreams and the Panzer Dragoon series. But they had so many great first party games on that platform.
Excellent episode. That XRGB Mini makes a big difference, too! I just got one for myself and have nothing but good things to say about it... It's absolutely the closest you can get to a nice PVM. Also, the Saturn kicks major ass. No system has ever been given so much love by arcade developers for ports of great, classic fighting & shooting games. I always wanted one as a kid, but never got one until I became a MAN... Or, maybe I never became a man until I got a Saturn?? -- Well either way, I didn't have one when I was a boy.
8:30 Woah it's Ice Cube!! Dude most excellent video, seriously fantastic job on this, I've been playing lots of Saturn games lately. I didn't know all that history on it, very interesting!!
Living in Japan when the Saturn came out made me love the console so much to this day. My Japanese friends were so into it over any other console. Not as enjoyable until you are able to play Japanese ported games on it since most of the good games never made it to North America. Good review!
I discovered your channel last night with this video. I have watched most of your content so far and plan to finish it all when I get home from work. Looking forward to future videos!
Bought my Sega Saturn from a local game shop called Game Giant. I thoroughly enjoyed mine. Dark Savior, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi Legions, Shining Force, Mr. Bones, and countless others kept me busy. RIP Sega as we once knew It .
Panzer Dragoon was a great game that I never enjoyed until many years later, and I'd highly recommend it for any retro gamer. Daytona USA is still a great game for any Saturn owner. The author of this video pretty much rated Clockwork Knight correctly (my opinion). It was worth a rental. I bought it on eBay, defeated it in a few days, and then resold it on eBay a week later. I have little incentive to play its sequel.
You really deserve more views and subs man. Your videos are incredibly informative. Even more so than the more mainstream channels! You seem to cover a lot more than they do. Keep up the good work dude! :D
+unnamed715 Thanks man, I really appreciate that. The channel has been growing at a crazy rate in the last few months, so I think we're going places! Thanks for watching!!
Classic Gaming Quarterly Yeah no problem man. With detailed content like yours, I imagine you'll get quite a large fan-base in the next upcoming months. :)
Wow, such a great job on the video - congratulations!!! Well-paced, excellent visuals, and you got all the details right. Bravo; I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Love the look and overall design of the Saturn especially the Japanese version with its dark grey case with blue buttons. Just looks so clean even now it still looks great, the design has aged very well very much like the Mega Drive with all models still looking great till this day (model one is still my favourite of the Mega Drive models)
+II DIRECTx II agreed, I also liked the Panasonic 3DO FZ-1 model. Quality made. It's a shame people didn't take the time when programming games for the Saturn.
Mark Deluisi Very cool looking system. It's big but looks awesome, personally prefer larger systems, have always found that small systems look cheap and toy like.
You did such a good job with this video man, I was just talking about the Saturn with my homie and found this video. Learned a lot about this console since the Saturn is very foggy in my memory.
Oh, I thought I was the only brazilian who would have noticed your Senna's hat. Fortunately I wasn't, as there are other brazilian fans of you out there :) Great video. Now, what about a Sega Dreamcast's launch episode? I'm sure it would be an episode full of content, considering there were two teams working independently(Sega of Japan X North America) and how it ended in one of the most amazing line-up launches in history to date.
+Juliano Bittencourt Yeah, it's awesome how many Brazillian fans I now have! I've worn Senna stuff on other videos, but this video was more popular, so it was noticed by more people. I will DEFINITELY be doing a Dreamcast launch show at some point. Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for posting these, always impressed by the history/quality of each vid. I'm mostly a retro Nintendo gamer these days, but I agree with some of the posters that a Dreamcast Launch vid would be awesome to add to your already kick ass library of vids. I actually got a Dreamcast for free back in the day (probably around 2001) because my parents worked for a guy who worked for Sega in their San Francisco office. Although the SNES is still my favorite console of all time, I have to say that maybe the most impressive and innovative is my Sega Dreamcast--GREAT console!
@@andrewchristiansen8311 Yeah but were they getting $6000? You can ask anything you want but you ain't gonna alway's get someone to buy your jacked up price's!
+James Schmidt I heard its succes in Japan (and in the East in general) was due to lots of JRPGs. Some (or many?) of them were really outstanding, like Grandia and Lunar remake. But in the US it was Berny Stollar, who refused to give green light to localizing JRPGs, as he thought the games were too niche and failing to portray all the graphics potential (he led the same policy in SCEA prior to joining Sega).
+James Schmidt The Saturn was huge in Japan. The console even made cameos in some of my favorite animes of that era. You can see Asuka playing Hikari's Saturn in an episode of Evangelion! Sakura Taisen for one was huge over there as well as many, many other titles that never came out here cuz SOA was being run by idiots after '96.
man your sega system coverage is just a walk down memory lane for me lol, i remember asking my parents for it for either birthday or christams, seeing as my birthday is in december it could have been either and i had the virtua fighter and daytona pack in plus virtua cop. i played the hell out of the clockwork knight demo but never played the full game. i still remember, i was in middle school and my mom convinced my dad to buy it for me. there i was with my parents at walmart, anxiously waiting for them to get a console after my parents had debated which one they would get me, and waiting for the moment i could grab the bag with my sega saturn in it. when we got home i unplugged my genesis and hooked up my saturn, i played the hell out of daytona lol oh how i wish sega would get back into the console business, i know it would cursh them financially right now but an old sega fanboy can dream.....
+wakcedout In my opinion, if you played the demo of Clockwork Knight, you played enough of it! I too wish Sega was still in the hardware business. Thanks for the comment!
I was lucky. Even though I only had a SNES back in 95, my bro in law bought a Saturn and a bunch of games. He gave it to me a few years ago. It sits here on my desk now.
It would be interesting to see that, but it would be a fairly short video since there were only two games available at launch (Pilotwings 64 and Super Mario 64).
It is a shame about Kalinski, probably one of the best CEOs in gaming, he turned Sega from a niche arcade house to a household name. No other Sega CEO was even remotely as successful.
Tornado1994 I can't think of any Japanese Sega CEO that had as much success. Sega did better in north America with the genesis than any other platform in any other region.
downphoenix Haijime Satomi current President and Chief Operating Officer of SEGA Holdings,Co,Ltd He SAVED the whole company, helped reorganize and restructure SEGA's Arcade Amusement business(whom Okawa nearly destroyed after forcing SEGA to go software), brought in new market ventures for SEGA, allowed them to buy TMS Entertainment, revived SEGA Toys, helped SEGA pay off $3 billion in debt, revived SEGA's old IPs for protection, revived Saturn and Dreamcast to be steadfastly protected, Brought SEGA into the Theme Park business,Casino business, expanded their Redemption Game Machine business, not to mention grow SEGA to be a much more sustainable and larger company than they were in the CSK years. People underestimate Satomi. He's hands down SEGA's Best CEO. People are so hung up on the "Consumer Game Business" and "Panchinko" divisions, thinking if Sega's 3rd division fails, the whole company will go down without realizing that its a very tiny division of the whole company and can be easily treated as collateral. The 3rd party division of SEGA is utterly worthless and meaningless. The general Malaise of the COD infested industry. overseas poor management in America and Europe and the conflicted and divided fanbase(Whom most of them aren't real SEGA fans, but instead Wolves in Sheep's Clothing who are at heart console fanboys who want SEGA to only be a publisher for their favorite platform,) are the reason why SEGA can't be seen publicly as the legend and GREAT gaming brand they are. Satomi WANTS to bring SEGA back into consoles: "Question: How are you going to rebuild the Sega brand and how long do you think that is going to take? Satomi: As I said before, the Sega brand first became famous as an arcade machine and then with the home video game consoles. The Sonic character was largely popular with those machines and consoles. Unfortunately, we eventually withdrew from the home video game console business. However, our name and brand is still out there because of the famous characters from people’s childhood. We would like to change, adjust or shift our product, brand and business with the current era to be a leader again in the future." Translation: We want to get back into the hardware business and are willing to change our business structure to do so. He just needs SEGA fans, the TRUE ones to come out of the woodworks that have been hiding.
Tornado1994 okay then why did Sega recently have a lot of layoffs in the west and shut down most of their mobile projects? If they were really transitioning back to console development, then why the layoffs?
downphoenix The layoffs were for the 3rd party consumer games division. Shutting down mobile games is extremely common. It's pretty asinine to think that doing so is sigificant. Whenever a Mobile game is shut down, it's immediately replaced by another. BTW, SEGA recently posted a profit in case you didn't notice. www.segasammy.co.jp/english/pdf/release/201603_3q_tanshinhosoku_e_final.pdf
that was ace like the other videos in your "launch of" series. thanks for including the daytona guy singing i was ready to look that up after the video haha.
+bastardtubeuser Thanks! Yeah, that video of the Daytona dude is awesome, so I had to include a snippet of it. To be honest, I was kind of worried about getting a copyright strike or something because of it, but I went ahead and did it anyway because it fit so nicely. Thanks for watching!
Late to the party, but WOW. I really enjoyed this episode. The combination of history and game impressions segments really hooks me, and I am a huge fan of your narration/delivery. Since I skipped the Saturn (in favor of the PlayStation), I honestly didn't know a lot about it-- other than the basic history (cost, questionable launch decisions, final outcome). It's always great to learn more things. I had not really considered how the launch date change had affected software releases, nor did I realize the drought that occurred shortly after the surprise launch. I'm guessing that it might have been at least a bit frustrating for early adopters to have to wait for the software train to catch up. My decision to skip the Saturn was based on feeling like I got hosed after dropping the cash on the 32X, and that was after feeling like the SEGA CD never really lived up to its potential. I enjoyed (and still do enjoy) the Genesis, but my confidence in SEGA after the SCD and 32X all but disappeared... whereas the PlayStation blew me away in mid-1995, when I first played one. I know that I missed out on a few games (and probably would've liked the Pebble Beach game, based on your demonstration/comments), but I still don't feel all that compelled to seek one out and experience it for myself. Congrats on another quality video!
+Peter Skerritt Hey Pete! As always, thanks for watching. I think your experience is a common one. A lot of people felt unsatisfied with their purchase of the Sega CD, and then felt straight-up burned by the 32X, so it's understandable that those people were going to be hesitant when Sega released a $400 console less than a year later. I do think you should check out the Saturn if you can pick one up on the cheap, though. Thanks for the comment!
This was the first console I bought myself. Actually, my dad paid half of it, but I did put in all of the money I'd been saving for nearly a year. Went to the store for a Playstation, played Virtua Fighter Remix in the store, and walked out with a Saturn. Had Clockwork Knight too. My brother rocked the roulette mini game, giving us basically infinite lives. I had almost every game you highlighted. Considering I had about 10 games total, that's a nice feat
i think what ruined sega was their segmentation of sega of america and sega of japan. if they would have joined forces instead of fighting over everything they could have actually stayed alive as a hardware company but they released the saturn too early and killed it off before it had a chance to gain a foothold in the market. unfortunately they made almost the same mistake with the dreamcast. if they would have made the 32x more prominent and let the development of the saturn continue longer so the hardware could be enhanced and developers could take advantage of the hardware better. if you look at virua fighter and the updated version they released months later it proves they could have taken better advantage of the hardware if they just took more time and knew more what they were doing.
I was 20 when I bought this system at launch and got 5 of the 6 games. Even though I LOVED Clockwork Knight you're right--I only bought it by default since there were so few titles. Also I was most excited about playing VF but I also agree Panzeer would have made more sense. Great video!
+Classic Gaming Quarterly yeah and my newly married bride was PISSED!! Especially since it was an early release and caught me off guard. I went down to Babbages the day it came out and I hid the games from her and lied about the cost of the Saturn. Yeah I was a real man lol!
I got a Saturn for Christmas one year with virtua fighter 2. Loved the system. Wish it did well in the states. Nostalgia central with anything Sega related for me.

Classic Gaming Quarterly os that a monitor or a tv in the video?
But really do you really like the sega saturn some point of view I don't agree with😒😒🤔🤔😒😒???!!!
The moral of the story: Being out the door first won't help you, if you forgot to put on your pants.
I've never heard that saying before, but I like it!
Nice! Also, maybe you remembered your pants, but they came without buttons, a zipper, or a belt, either way a terrible idea, lol...
I’m of the philosophy that pants only slow you down.

Roooooolling STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART
Daytona USA was fun but the real fun was with SEGA Rally Championship... Gosh I miss my Saturn
I'd say it's more funny than cool, but definitely memorable. :)
I'm so glad I have a Saturn. I pity those who do not.
Gaming Palooza Empire I remember those. A popular one was called "Tips and Tricks"

Triple M Quite possibly the greatest combover the world has ever seen.
I feel like I'm watching a TV documentary, in a good way.
well … because it is a documentary?
yeah high quality youtube content is like TV - except its kinda free and it doesnt suck...
Well the first 10 minutes is a documentary, after that it's a bunch of game reviews, which is ok I guess.
For reals. RUclips > cable
Uni Why could be in a bad way?
Your production quality makes me feel like I'm watching an actual TV show. Keep up the awesome work. It inspires me to do some of my own.
Awesome, man. Thanks!
Panzer Dragroon will always have a special place in my heart.
MonkeyWith72Magic Panzer was a great game. Shenmue is my favorite Sega game.
I was born in 77. Thank you for making these videos, and not being a douche bag while doing it. I hold you in the same high esteem as I do with the Angry Video Game Nerd. again, thank you!
+Paul Scharlau I was born in 77 too!! Thank you very much for the compliment!
You betcha. Are you on PSN per chance?
Paul Scharlau I have a PSN account but I probably turn on my PS3 once every month, and never play games online. I really don't have time to play games outside of the games I play for this show. :(
+Classic Gaming Quarterly Roger that!
I was born in 77 also June 10th 1977
This video earned you my subscription over a year ago. I’ve watched it a few more times since, including today. Still a great video, and still one of my fondest console memories.
It’s basically a toss up between late night battles with friends on the Saturn, or marathon sessions of Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive.

+TB46667 - The Golden Age Gamer I had a saturn, sega cd, 32x, 3d0, jaguar and many other system.
Guess they sold 'em to Babbages or EB when it's time passed... Interesting to think about!
but eventually the system tanked n the usa but there were gemes on that system tomb rater was origanally for the saturn daytona usa was a great arcade port on the system
+Classic Gaming Quarterly
Yeah no Stunner included which I guess was kinda dumb.
I agree with you on Panzer Dragoon should have been the pack in game, that game was certainly the most impressive Saturn game.
Great video man, happy to have found this channel. I'll be 38 in less than 2 months and even though modern games crush classics the feeling we had has kids and teens with these games can never be recreated with new games or gamers.
So very true to this day!
"and even though modern games crush classics" you're joking, right? Video games have been going downhill since the PS3/360 generation, especially western developed games.
Daytona USA i wanna fly SKy highhhhhhhh , let's goo togetherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 23:57
GAY BONERRRRRRRRR LET'S GO AWAY!!!
Bahahahaa
i still love the sega saturn. it has such nice games like shining force 3, panzer dragoon 1,zwei and saga, and ofcourse shining the holy ark and so much more,
6:33 I remember when my parents bought me a PSOne, it had a demo game pack in. The demo included Tekken 2 and Crash Bandicoot. Those are they only 2 I remember because I played those the most.
Was that in 97? I think I have that demo disc...
@@CGQuarterly-It was 96 or 97.
I remember playing Scud on the Saturn. That game was awesome. Great video i could watch these all day.
S C U D I S R E A L M H A R T I
Amazing video :) Thanks for all those memories ;) Here in Portugal we were huge fans of everything that came from Sega.. til the arrival of the PlayStation! :)
Bro these videos are PHENOMENAL.
Thanks!
+Micah Buzan The Saturn is absolutely worth having.
I couldn't recommend it more if you haven't gotten one yet than seriously what are you waiting for?
I loved Nights. I owned it and always played it.
Holy crap the same guy did even the singing for Daytona? True artistry right here
Sweet video man.
+Classic Gaming Quarterly So true. Sega had so many chances to do stuff right.
+The Unfunny Chameleon YOUR FAVORITE SYSTEM? thats... heavy
Bug! that game was fun.
Ok
Thanks!
Sega Saturn and Segata Sanshiro are inseparable! I like it that you added him in your video.
+RegalShock I've actually been thinking about doing a whole episode about him.
Sanshiro Segata-san! *HAIGH!*
Dude your videos are amazing, thank you.
I bought my Saturn some time in 1995. It came with Daytona, VF Remix and Victory Goal. Surely a much better bundle. :)
+gvfc That is definitely a better bundle, yes. Thanks for watching!!
Terrific episode. This channel never fails to bring me all the way back
+WeeWeeJumbo Thanks! I love your avatar. "Water fluoridation, Mandrake."
:-)
The in-fighting between the Japanese branch and American branch will never cease to amaze me. I'm not going to say Sega would still be making home consoles if it hadn't happened but maybe there's a chance, if Sega of Japan had tried to improve and work with SoA, that Sega would still be a hardware and software manufacturer.
Sega’s Japanese management always brought problems for the company....it was the Americans that made sega successful in the console business
everytime I hear the daytona theme I get chills down my spine.
I am only like 3 minutes in and this is the best video I have seen about the saturn launch ever.
These launch videos are fantastic. Thanks for all the work that went into these!
My biggest regret when I was a kid was buying the Saturn ! But Guardian Heroes though ! What a masterpiece !
Goldeneye was not a launch title.
james silver Oh, I see.
Mourning Star Sega Saturn was great. Great 2d Titles, Panzer Dragoon, Nights into Dream and many more.
+Vincent Pascal Thanks! As to your last sentence, that is definitely my plan.
Still got my Saturn
Legendary. Hope you have panzer dragoon zwei
+eazyd34 Does your friend happen to live in Northern California? Maybe I can go get your Saturn back...
Classic Gaming Quarterly No, so cal lol
The Saturn was such a 2D beast of a machine.
3d and 2d cool cool cool😎😎😎😎😄😄😄😄😘go sega!!!!!!
2d and 3d power the best 10++😏🇯🇵👍👍👍🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵👍👍👍🇯🇵👍😄😄
Solid, detailed, and informative video. You my friend, have a bright future here on RUclips with this type of quality content.
Thanks!
Ah the system that Sega destroyed itself....
Your videos are top tier material, really enjoy these console launch retrospectives!
+isunshin999 Thanks, I really appreciate that!
+Retro Game Players Thanks man!
Awesome work. You and the Generation-16 guy are the best at this. You've both got great voices for it, too.
+funforalgernon Thanks! Don't forget The Videogame Historian, though. Thanks for the positive comment!!!
such an important part of video game history. Thank you so much for all the work you put into this. :)
Living in Japan when the Saturn came out made me love the console so much to this day. My Japanese friends were so into it over any other console. Not as enjoyable until you are able to play Japanese ported games on it since most of the good games never made it to North America. Good review!
+Nerdtella I agree completely regarding needing the ability to play imports. Thanks for watching!!
Two words; Burning Rangers!
I discovered your channel last night with this video. I have watched most of your content so far and plan to finish it all when I get home from work. Looking forward to future videos!
+ProtomanBlues87 Thanks! I am looking forward to uploading future videos!
Cool video I bought my sega Saturn at electronic boutique on launch day with Daytona USA and clockwork knight.
+referral madness true lol
+Tony Fuentes I got my Saturn for christmas in 1996. Came with Nights Into Dreams and the trifecta: Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA and Virtua Cop :D
+Sopa de Caracol g
Silvia Zambrano damn right
Bought my Sega Saturn from a local game shop called Game Giant. I thoroughly enjoyed mine. Dark Savior, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi Legions, Shining Force, Mr. Bones, and countless others kept me busy. RIP Sega as we once knew It .
Man i love this series! Keep up the great work dude!
Thanks!
was just going to say that!
great information about these epic past of history of video-games. I LOVE growing up on 90's
Great minds think alike. Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the entertainment, mate! Keep up the good work!
Jesus Christ this Banco Nacional cap just sent me waaay back into my childhood! Well done.
Classic Gaming Quarterly
Yeah no problem man. With detailed content like yours, I imagine you'll get quite a large fan-base in the next upcoming months. :)
Thank you for this video. Took me back to my childhood especially the magazines. I owned all of them and read them all the time. Sub !
Just have to say, your videos rock! Nostalgia overload to the max :)
Thanks! Glad you like them!
Wow, such a great job on the video - congratulations!!! Well-paced, excellent visuals, and you got all the details right. Bravo; I thoroughly enjoyed it!
+Peter Malek Thank you, sir!
I Love the Sega Saturn .. My favorite game to play back then was Guardian heroes ;-p
4:32 - I remember that EGM issue! So many good memories of reading about all of the games I wanted but would never have.
Love the look and overall design of the Saturn especially the Japanese version with its dark grey case with blue buttons. Just looks so clean even now it still looks great, the design has aged very well very much like the Mega Drive with all models still looking great till this day (model one is still my favourite of the Mega Drive models)
I was a fan of the white model
Mark Deluisi Even till this day Sega made the best looking systems.
These are really well-produced. This channel deserves more recognition!
Thanks!
I loved my Saturn and fighters meganix was my go to game
Your video on the launch is longer than recommended documentaries on the whole life cycle of the Saturn. Love it!
Glad you liked it!
Classic Gaming Quarterly I can't get enough of these right now and there isn't enough time in the day! Keep up the awesome work.
This channel is amazing! great work :)
+ThePSXcollector Thanks a lot; I appreciate that!
Truly a great documentary!! keep up the good work, bro!!
+Nayef Al-Haddad Thanks!!
I'm impressed! You've earned a subscriber fine sir!
+Brad Nimbus Thanks dude!
You did such a good job with this video man, I was just talking about the Saturn with my homie and found this video. Learned a lot about this console since the Saturn is very foggy in my memory.
Oh, I thought I was the only brazilian who would have noticed your Senna's hat. Fortunately I wasn't, as there are other brazilian fans of you out there :)
Great video.
I got a steering wheel for my Sega Saturn.. the Box got a picture of Ayrton on it 💚 💛
Thanks for posting these, always impressed by the history/quality of each vid.
Panzer Dragoon was delayed quite a bit in Europe, I got my machine at launch, but ended up getting a Japanese copy of Dragoon instead.
Did you thanked them with: "arigato"?!
@@kvarnerinfoTV he probably replied with "But...Thank you,you!!!"

Just discovered your channel and I can't stay away. great job dude.
+ESPINOZA316 Thanks man!!
Thanks for another sweet episode. I never realized the Saturn did so well in Japan, that's interesting.
+James Schmidt Thanks for watching!
Sakura Taisen for one was huge over there as well as many, many other titles that never came out here cuz SOA was being run by idiots after '96.
man your sega system coverage is just a walk down memory lane for me lol, i remember asking my parents for it for either birthday or christams, seeing as my birthday is in december it could have been either and i had the virtua fighter and daytona pack in plus virtua cop. i played the hell out of the clockwork knight demo but never played the full game.
i still remember, i was in middle school and my mom convinced my dad to buy it for me. there i was with my parents at walmart, anxiously waiting for them to get a console after my parents had debated which one they would get me, and waiting for the moment i could grab the bag with my sega saturn in it.
when we got home i unplugged my genesis and hooked up my saturn, i played the hell out of daytona lol
oh how i wish sega would get back into the console business, i know it would cursh them financially right now but an old sega fanboy can dream.....
+wakcedout In my opinion, if you played the demo of Clockwork Knight, you played enough of it! I too wish Sega was still in the hardware business. Thanks for the comment!
Classic Gaming Quarterly i think i was that one strange kid they were selling to because to this day i still want to play the full version lol
I was lucky. Even though I only had a SNES back in 95, my bro in law bought a Saturn and a bunch of games. He gave it to me a few years ago. It sits here on my desk now.
Datona was a good, high note to go out on. Thanks for the video. It really took me back.
Make the N64 Relase Day 1996
It would be interesting to see that, but it would be a fairly short video since there were only two games available at launch (Pilotwings 64 and Super Mario 64).
bartsimpson83 indeed but mario 64 was damn good and the zelda , m personal favorite is Star Fox 64 1997 :)
Great video - thanks for the upload.
I got my Saturn back in '96 with Nights into Dreams and the analogue pad. Good times :)
+Paul Jackson Thanks for watching!
It is a shame about Kalinski, probably one of the best CEOs in gaming, he turned Sega from a niche arcade house to a household name. No other Sega CEO was even remotely as successful.
+downphoenix Of America.
Tornado1994 I can't think of any Japanese Sega CEO that had as much success. Sega did better in north America with the genesis than any other platform in any other region.
downphoenix Haijime Satomi current President and Chief Operating Officer of SEGA Holdings,Co,Ltd
He SAVED the whole company, helped reorganize and restructure SEGA's Arcade Amusement business(whom Okawa nearly destroyed after forcing SEGA to go software), brought in new market ventures for SEGA, allowed them to buy TMS Entertainment, revived SEGA Toys, helped SEGA pay off $3 billion in debt, revived SEGA's old IPs for protection, revived Saturn and Dreamcast to be steadfastly protected, Brought SEGA into the Theme Park business,Casino business, expanded their Redemption Game Machine business, not to mention grow SEGA to be a much more sustainable and larger company than they were in the CSK years.
Satomi WANTS to bring SEGA back into consoles:
"Question: How are you going to rebuild the Sega brand and how long do you think that is going to take?
Satomi: As I said before, the Sega brand first became famous as an arcade machine and then with the home video game consoles. The Sonic character was largely popular with those machines and consoles. Unfortunately, we eventually withdrew from the home video game console business. However, our name and brand is still out there because of the famous characters from people’s childhood. We would like to change, adjust or shift our product, brand and business with the current era to be a leader again in the future."
Translation: We want to get back into the hardware business and are willing to change our business structure to do so.
BTW, SEGA recently posted a profit in case you didn't notice.

that was ace like the other videos in your "launch of" series. thanks for including the daytona guy singing i was ready to look that up after the video haha.
+Peter Skerritt Give Saturn a chance.
Great video by the way, earned you an extra subscriber! :)
Thanks dude!
sad you missed out on the playstation
Great channel my friend. You earned a sub. I love sega and will always defend them to death. They took risks no other company would.
Thanks!
Great episode, Chris. I didn't realize some of those games were launch titles (the Soccer and Golf games in particular).
Fucking see EGM and GP magazines really brought me back.
wow the daytona soundtrack took me back specially at 24 i use to love that song i played this game endlessly world wide soccer 97 was my favorite too
i think what ruined sega was their segmentation of sega of america and sega of japan. if they would have joined forces instead of fighting over everything they could have actually stayed alive as a hardware company but they released the saturn too early and killed it off before it had a chance to gain a foothold in the market. unfortunately they made almost the same mistake with the dreamcast. if they would have made the 32x more prominent and let the development of the saturn continue longer so the hardware could be enhanced and developers could take advantage of the hardware better. if you look at virua fighter and the updated version they released months later it proves they could have taken better advantage of the hardware if they just took more time and knew more what they were doing.
Yeah I love their product, but them as a company, executively... Gotta wonder where we could have been if they managed to dominate!
I think they should have never released the 32x
@@Dash120z Probably never should have released the Sega CD too. Leave that quagmire for NEC to drown in.
just found your channel brings back memories when I was playing these games when I was young with my twin brother I'm subscribing to your Channel
It's a shame that Tom kalinski wasn't the CEO of all of Sega. They could have been a much better contender in the console wars.
I was 20 when I bought this system at launch and got 5 of the 6 games. Even though I LOVED Clockwork Knight you're right--I only bought it by default since there were so few titles. Also I was most excited about playing VF but I also agree Panzeer would have made more sense. Great video!
Damn, 5 out of the 6? That was like $650! Nice.
+Classic Gaming Quarterly yeah and my newly married bride was PISSED!! Especially since it was an early release and caught me off guard. I went down to Babbages the day it came out and I hid the games from her and lied about the cost of the Saturn. Yeah I was a real man lol!
