  • Episode 31 - The Sega Genesis in 1989. This week on the show, we take a look at the games released for the Sega Genesis in the months after its launch, and up through its first holiday season. These include World Championship Soccer, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf, Rambo III, Super Hang-On, Forgotten Worlds, Mystic Defender, Zoom!, and The Revenge of Shinobi.
    World Championship Soccer is the clear stinker here, with Zoom! clearly in the "meh" category. All of the other games are absolutely worth a look though, as the Genesis really followed up the launch with a slew of quality titles!

    I like this guy's videos for the following reasons: he doesn't have an annoying typical RUclips gamer 'whasssup Guyeeeesss' voice, he's not sarcastic or condescending and doesn't commentate when not necessary. Very fun and relaxing to watch :-)

    1989 Genesis titles are in my opinion the best examples of the power of advertising through box art. The box art was fantastic, and in those days, when we wanted to rent or buy a game, that’s all we had to go on.

    Man, I remember when I fired up The Revenge of Shinobi for the first time in the winter of 1990. I was totally blown away with the opening and when I heard the music, that's when I knew that the Genesis was a huge upgrade from the Sega Master System. I still have the original version of the game. Video games has sure come a long way. 😉

    • @TechSpec814
      @TechSpec814 7 лет назад +4

      kikayei Sadly I was born after the Genesis. I got hold of one a while ago and got Revenge of Shinobi. Even if I am used to newer games and consoles, Revenge of Shinobi was impressive for me. The opening was and still is awesome!

      kikayei Haha yes I agree. Newer consoles just don't get me. Like DLC, online gaming, patches, etc. it's alright but it's BS at the same time in my opinion. No offense to anyone. I just want to play a game. The Genesis is cool and I enjoy it. It's neat seeing how old technology worked and it impresses me. I honestly asked for a Gensis for this Christmas. Sorry PS4 and Xbox One.

      I was born in 1989 so the PS1, N64, and PS2 were my childhood. I'm glad I was born when I was because the 8 bit and 16 bit generations were sorely lacking in save points and the majority of games had intentionally crazy difficulty levels to pad out the length of the game. It sucks getting stuck on one part of the game, only to lose your last life and have to start the entire game over. It's a huge disincentive to continue playing the game for me. When I play a game like that, I almost always play a different game after losing all my lives and getting a Game Over. I think the PS1 and PS2 generations really nailed it when it came to difficulty. Fortunately Nintendo introduced Restore Points for their Virtual Console games, which made old games a lot more enjoyable for me. Then you have games like Disney Afternoon Collection and Mega Man Legacy Collection introducing save states as well.

    [Coury] A very special Christmas in 1989. I have a birthday the day after so my '89 haul was Altered Beast, which I actually like quite a bit, Ghouls 'n Ghosts which was the start of the show for me. Absolutely amazing. Last Battle, which looked good with its huge sprites but I never got far with it. Thunder Force II which I didn't care too much for it at first, but came to love it over time and Rambo III, which I really love and still play pretty often.
    Amazing episode!

    I remember buying those two VG&CE magazines at a local grocery store (and still have them) just so I could read the articles about the TG16 and Genesis. I was always partial to the Genesis having been a Master System fan, and I intended to pick up Space Harrier 2 as my first game as soon as I could afford to buy the system for myself (which I eventually saved up enough for, but then decided to spend my money on a CD player instead). Any way, love Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and Revenge of Shinobi. Forgotten Worlds was another favorite that I got to check out when I rented a Genesis once. I'd like to get my hands on Mystic Defender, too, being as it's a sequel to Spellcaster. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you so much for making these videos. I NEVER usually post, but I absolutley LOVE your shows format; tackling the games AND context for when they were released. After almost a decade of watching RUclips, you're the only show I've encountered that tackles retro gaming like this, and I love it! I can watch gameplay or reviews of old games from dozens of hacks online, but whats even more important to me is learning about is what it was like playing those games at launch, or early in the console cycle; and how the graphical leaps actually effected customers and their perceptions of the games and consoles. Sega Genesis had a TOTALLY different vibe during 1989 (The Arcade Port Era) compared to 1991 (The Sonic Era)..and then in 1993 (Post Mortal Kombat Era). So Thank you Classic Gaming Quarterly. Please keep doing what you're doing! I also love how down-to-earth you are compared to other pretentious gaming history channels!!

    I'll never forget the launch of the Genesis. I was in grade 5 and one of my classmates was lucky enough to get one on launch day. I was lucky enough to get invited to his place to try it out and IT BLEW ME AWAY. I had just got the NES so when I saw the Genesis for the first time, it was like being in the future! Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Ghost N Goblins were the first games I got to play on the Genesis and man did those games have a huge impact on me. The graphics, sound and just the overall scale of everything just seemed incredible. I was so jealous!

    I like the rating system for the games, you either buy it when it comes out, or is it worth a rental. That was our thing back in the day, renting games on the weekends, some stores had 3-4 night rentals other had weekly rentals. If you rented a terrible game, the weekend was over. I remember renting some crappy game, the weekend OJ Simpson hijacked the TV on the bronco, all the channels had him on and I had a shit game at home. FML. There's always next week.

    • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  9 лет назад +1

      John Gotti Jr Thanks, man. On the show, I try to look at the games in their own time, rather than what they have to offer now, because that's how I generally approach games when I play them. I think that part of the fun of these episodes is taking a step back in time and really looking at things from that perspective.

  • @GameSack
    @GameSack 9 лет назад +46

    I own the Ghouls n Ghosts arcade PCB. I'd rather play the Genesis version over the SuperGrafx version any day of the week. The music is almost identical to the arcade and most of the sounds are pretty close. The SG is waaaay off in that department. They even botched the scrolling in the first part of level 3 in the SG version. All versions (even those on compilation discs) are much harder than the actual arcade game. The real arcade has tons of checkpoints throughout any given level even with the dips set to the most difficult mode. The Genesis has 2 throughout each level and the SG has but one for some odd reason.

    • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  9 лет назад +8

      Game Sack Thanks for that info. I've been keeping an eye out for the arcade board, but didn't know that it was easier than the home versions. Other than the difficulty, is it that much better than just playing the game on Capcom Generations Vol. 2?

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 8 лет назад +3

      +Game Sack The arcade version only has 1 checkpoint per level. The Genesis version has checkpoints on bosses which makes it piece of cake.
      The Genesis version on "professional" mode is pretty much the same as the arcade, but as i stated the Genesis version has checkpoints on bosses which make it easier than the arcade.
      Anyway, all of them all fantastic ports, but i have to say the Supergrafx port looks closer to the arcade overall, Genesis version has tons of missing detail in backgrounds.

    • @GameSack
      @GameSack 8 лет назад +3

      Marcel Weber The SuperGrafx has some detail that is missing from the Genesis version but the colors are kind of off and the scrolling is completely wrong in level 3-1. My PCB has tons of checkpoints, more than the Genesis version and I've got the dips at the toughest settings. My PCB is the US version however. Perhaps the Japanese version is tougher. These checkpoints can be verified in MAME. Try it.

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 8 лет назад +3

      Game Sack Yeah you are right, the colors are kinda off on the Supergrafx version, i would say Stage 4 and 5 looked the best color-wise. The Genesis version also has inaccurate colors though. To me the detail difference is big, tons of backgrounds are very simplified in the Genesis version (pretty sure it's because of the 4mbits limitation)
      Interesting, i will try the US version. I mostly play the World version on MAME and there is only one checkpoint per level, i thought the US version was the same.
      As for the Japanese version, the only difference compared to the World version was that the bosses have more health iirc

    Great review! There were atleast 2 other codes for GnG on Genesis. One being a level select(you could even select the final boss!) and the other was a way to radically change the colors. In Revenge of Shinobi, there is unlimited shurikens. Go to options menu and select 00 shurikens and wait a couple of seconds..it will turn to an infinity sign. Also, a hidden 2-up in the beginning of the factory level that you have to keep dying to get and slowly increase your 1ups. Forgotten Worlds was missing 2 levels from the arcade version FWIW.

  • @DeyaViews
    @DeyaViews 8 лет назад +1

    Revenge of Shinobi is a game I have a strong love-hate relationship with. It controls pretty well, and generally its level of challenge and the level design are really good. But GOD, the plane-switching levels are pure PUNISHMENT! The second factory level with soldiers lurking and shooting you just out of sight with little to no way to dodge them is ridiculous! And there is one jump in the sea-side level that is nigh-impossible to make, even with the jump jutsu (which prolly just boost vertical jump height).
    That being said, the boss fights, though sometimes frustrating (Spider-Man/Batman, Godzilla) and sometimes easy after figuring out the pattern (Terminator, Robot Penis), are generally really cool and appropriately challenging in line with the rest of the game.

    Great episode! It's always cool seeing early Genesis stuff and it is obvious you know what you are talking about. I really enjoy watching this kind of stuff because I was late to the game (no pun intended) since I was born in 1990.

    I was still rocking a Commodore 64 in 1989-90, and my friends all had NES consoles... so it's been neat to watch your coverage of the early life cycle of the Genesis.
    Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf is one of my favorite early Genesis releases. Much like Tommy Lasorda Baseball, APTG is accessible for players of all kinds (though having the manual handy for club yardage length helps here) and is fun to play. Super Hang-On is also a blast to play; the career mode distinguishes the Genesis port from the coin-op while adding far more replay value.
    Congrats on another great effort! This was fun to watch.

      Peter Skerritt Thanks man! The first time I ever played Choplifter was on a C64. Always wanted a home computer back then but didn't get one until the PC clone days.
      Totally agree with you on both Arnold Palmer and Super Hang-On.

    The Turbografx just seemed more high end and cutting edge than the Genesis for me back when these two were released, ...that is until I realized that alot of the high quality arcade games at that time that were wowing me as kid back then were being ported over to Genesis rather faithfully, upon realizing this and only having my NES to come home to I wanted one soooo bad, but being a kid with only a hard working single parent, I assumed only rich people could afford this type of thing...
    About 2 to 3 years later when Sega started packing in Sonic with it, one of my buddies in junior high got one n yup I still had an NES, but I use to come over to his pad and try it out frequently, and based on that he actually let me borrow the system and take it home over a weekend when he left town, unfortunately when I returned it I wrapped it up in a plastic bag and walked it to his house when suddenly two dudes pulled a screw driver out on me and pressed the thing up to my stomach as they searched through my pockets I just froze up until they tore the Genesis from my hands as I begged them to not take it because it simply wasn't mine they refused but simply walked away n sparred my life,...I ran back home told my mom n she totally freaked but was so happy I was alright that she immediately walked with me to the bank took out the almost 200 dollars that this system cost then walked with me to a neighborhood Woolworths here in the Hollywood area that no longer exist and bought one not for me, but for my friend that actually didn't believe I had got mugged n simply wanted to keep it, he quickly was silenced when I showed up with my mom a brand new boxed Genesis n a receipt...God I love my mother so much.

    Remember the power base converter for Genesis. Seeing how the Sega CD then the 32 X turned out I never purchased one. But I did fall prey to the Saturn when I should have purchased a PSX. This was because of all the fun I had on my Genesis, made me loyal & blind to Sega.

      Well, a big problem with the Saturn was how difficult it was to program for. Even if the Saturn wasn't a flop, I'm sure 3rd party developers would've just stuck with the PS1. Even the N64 didn't have much 3rd party support.

    • @matiasd.7755
      @matiasd.7755 5 лет назад

      Power Base converter was indeed an excellent purchase.
      Genesis was really two consoles in one: the older 8 bits system and the newer 16 bits one. So Power Base was worthwhile if you backed it up with good Master System games...
      Sega CD has some great games too...
      The 32x had wasted potential but never used and therefore not worthy...

    I ordered the Genesis from the Sears Catalog for the launch. I also ordered The Last Battle and Ghouls'N Ghost> i knew Ghouls N'Ghost wasn't due out for a couple of months, so when I went to Sears to pick up the Genesis, I was only expecting the system with Altered Beast and The Last Battle. Well, they had Ghouls'N Ghosts and and I got it that day. I was ecstatic. Took it home and popped it in. Was done with it in 3 hours. God I was hardcore back then.

    Revenge of Shinobi is the bomb! You what isn't awesome? Running out of shurikens! If you want to play with unlimited Shurikens go into the options menu and go to the option for starting number of Shurikens. Turn the number to zero and wait for a short while, it'll morph into an infinity symbol. Voila! Infinite ammo for you in-game!

    • @mainstreetsaint36

      Also the game did have something of a work around for no continues. Either have a second controller or switch the controller into the second controller port and hit start just before you die. You'll continue the game as the second player. Do the same in reverse when second player character is near death.

    A lot of these games are ones I still own, but about a month and a half ago I was lucky to find a copy of Forgotten Worlds complete. Looked like it hadn't even been played, and it was $50.
    But I found out very quickly that the game is one of the few that does not work with 6-button controllers. Apparently, it has to do with the way the game was programmed, and it's not the only one. Golden Axe II is also one of the games on that list, though you can at least use the face buttons. Forgotten Worlds just kicks you back to the title screen with a Game Over.
