I remember inviting my friend Steven over for my birthday party and he was spending the night, it was Summer after 3rd grade I believe, and I told him " bring your sega games, I might get a Sega for my birthday " and I did, we drank soda and ate cake all night breaking in my new system. Great memory! Cheer Retro!!

Even though I was never the biggest fan of the Genesis, I absolutely loved this video! I remember as a kid loving Sega because they were the king of the arcades. Altered Beast, Shinobi, Out Run, After Burner! All absolute killers! And you were so spot on. Seeing those arcade style graphics in a home console when we were kids was mind blowing! Altered Beast was always one of my favorite arcade games as a kid and I was impressed when I had seen it ported to a home console. Even though I was a Nintendo kid through and through. The summer of 1988 will always be the Sega summer for me. Glad that you got to experience the Genesis first hand at launch. My first time playing it wasn't until January of 1991! Great video my friend. And try not to get too discouraged about it.

Man I still remember opening my launch model 1 and plugging in Altered Beast and being blown away by the big pixels and that awesome soundtrack. I was done, SEGA 4 Life! Yes Altered Beast was a great pack in game.

It will always be in my top systems of all time! The first time my uncle threw in streets of rage and we heard that iconic intro music will never be forgotten! But I’m glad you loved the video. I put a ton of heart into it. I plan on doing another 1989 video about the remaining bangers that was released at the end of that year because that’s when the genesis really shined and showed what it could really do! But it's neat to hear that a marketing ploy Sega incurred genuinely worked and grabbed attention.
Yes they did! They really knew how to grab the market and say “pay attention” such a great time to be alive. They went with the celebrity endorsements because Nintendo had such a huge foot hole back then and a bunch of no compete clauses in place. So sega had to try something drastic! I picked up my Genesis a few years after I got a Super Nintendo in '92. I'd played the master system thanks to my cousin, but didn't know about the Genesis until later & bought it myself along with a number of games like Sonic & Moonwalker. I had to be one of the only kids to save up $500 Canadian to get all these things through my allowance. Video games taught me a lot by proxy, money management, how to fix & build computer, sauldering & how to have fun on my own. I may have been a bit young at launch, but I've still got a Genesis today because it's an essential part of gaming history in my books.

ok somethings not right you made a few very embarrassing mistakes i maybe call BS you didn't know about the SEGA mastersystem so you must had been very young when its released because poor people where im from orangecounty CA poor people only could afford mastersystem it got passed around and disscounted very quickly our rich friends went more hard on the NES. your core was hard for putting down people who don't know life before sonic but you kept showing sonic on video lol? even worse you just finally said these lanch games didn't do the genesis justice! wow? i think super thunder blade left a bad taste in your mouth you should buy the Sharp X68K version
I was very poor growing up, I definitely wasn’t able to be raised in California like you were. So from my personal experience not many people knew about the SMS. The genesis is where a lot of them were introduced. So I’m sure having money from your parents when you were a child helped introduce you to multiple consoles that I didn’t have access to. As for super thunder blade, I’m specifically talking about the genesis version, and to me compared to the arcade, it’s incredibly inferior on the genesis hardware. My dog's name is Sega Gen. I play my Sega on a 13" JVC HI-res RGB monitor. I still have never been able to get Moonwalker, my buddy had it.
