LENNY BREAU SOLO IN BOSTON 1981. PART ONE: 'MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY' & 'LULLABY' (SONG FOR DAWN-MARIE)
These solo performances were recorded at a 1981 seminar Lenny Breau presented in Boston, possibly at the Berklee School of Music. Lenny plays "Make Someone Happy", a song associated with Lenny's idol, Bill Evans, and his original tune, "Lullaby'" aka "Song for Dawn-Marie", written for his newborn daughter.

In 1960, Lenny Breau began studying and performing jazz with his friend and mentor, Bob Erlendson. Bob bought a Hofner electric bass for Lenny to use on their early gigs at Winnipeg's first jazz club, The Stage Door, because he felt that Lenny would benefit from learning the harmonic underpinnings of their material on the four-string instrument. But Lenny quickly went beyond simply outlining th...

Very boring those people who talk during 15 minutes before starting to play a tune... Even when it's a great musician like Lenny. Still more boring those videos from people who think they are so good that they play licks one by one and stop to show how it works to the poor idiots they think we are. (guitar Bear)

Love this...even though he was a virtuoso, what happens here is a humble, playful interaction with people in a small venue. Lenny was far beyond having something to prove, and the more I acquaint myself with him, the more poignant he is in his use of music to play, to connect, and to be himself. Hope he's still doing well out there in the otherworld. Cheers

I did in order to hear some of his single line playing while improvising in a jazz ensemble. What strikes me about him is that he was a jack of all trades, and while he was a very capable guitarist compared to most, he did not excel in any genre to be worthy of the type of praise that people seem to give him. I conclude, as I always have, that he was a decent working musician who was dedicated to his craft, but there’s nothing earth shattering. I am passionate about music, education, so I do not want youngsters and novices to get too skewed in opinion about his playing without knowing the other side of the equation. Simply put, there were scores of players in the various genres he dabbled in, that do credit to my wonderful instrument. It’s also true that the standard for guitar playing of various genres has gone up dramatically in the past 40 years, so if you want to say that he was good for his time, more power to you. Also, they have always been great guitarists, historically, and some of them are ageless. He’s not one of them. I mean when you get comments saying that this practice session between Greene and Breau was like ‘Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker,’ I think people are getting the wrong message. And if someone likes his music because it moves them, then that is as it should be.

I met Claude one night at a gig he was doing---that cigarette was in his mouth all night long smouldering away and every time i ran into him after that he would sit and chat for an hour or so and then wander off until we crossed paths again--- so one time I offered him a cigarette (knowing when he played he always had a smoke burning away in his mouth) and he looked at me absolutely deadpan and said " no thanks I don't smoke". The enigma that was Claude!!
