  • The date, personnel and location of this recording are all unknown. It's likely that it was made in 1969 and is possibly an out take from the Reader's Digest recording that Lenny did in October of that year, which featured 'Lullaby of Birdland' and two flamenco pieces. The session was probably recorded in Nashville although it may have been recorded at the RCA studio in Toronto. The bassist and drummer are not credited on the album and no studio logs from this session exist.
Lenny had been playing a Chet Atkins-like arrangement of 'Mr. Sandman' since he was fourteen or fifteen. (See the album 'Boy Wonder') He opens the tune here using a very similar arrangement before playing several choruses of it in his own inimitable style with the trio's straightforward backing.
    1. Mr. Sandman 00:10

Oh excellent, wow this is pure gold, Lenny's lines are beautiful and the tritones, pull offs, chord melody, alternate picking, then back to fingerstyle is flawless. Fantastic ... thank you

I’ve never heard a guitarist who can play so completely with 10 fingers. Each finger works in tandem with the other 9. There is no where on the fretboard or the span of strings over the body of the guitar that he couldn’t find to say his musical piece. I don’t think anyone will ever be able to achieve what he did. I don’t say this lightly - I know there are any number of players, known and lesser known that come close, but I’ve not found any guitarist that can do what Lenny did. If I do, I will be very happy. Until then, I’m just happy to have Lenny Breau in my world.

he's gone now, but left a way for us to explore more possibilities on this instrument ...if you have the muscle ability, hard nails, & the brain to lead with.

Lenny was always able to throw in the most unusual chord voicings into standards. Not for everyone, his dad smacked him for doing it!!

Wonderful to listen to. But my question is does his lengthy improvisation have anything to do harmonically with Mr. Sandman?
