This was around the time Andy Summers of the Police, who idolizes Breau, called him up from a hotel room and asked for a guitar lesson. Lenny was like, sure but it's $45 and I'll come to you. $45 for an hour and half with Lenny Breau. *mind blown*
I was in a group in the 70s playing at a club in Lewiston when Lenny showed up with his family and friends. He came up and played a couple of songs on my guitar. Then, during a break, we talked guitars, and he taught me how to tune a guitar using harmonics, and the way he played harmonics. He was such a nice guy.
Lenny Breau was a phenomenon. He brought such beauty to the world. Chet Atkins, in his later years, when he spoke of Lenny, tears would spring to his eyes. There is no greater compliment for a guitarist.
One can't tremolo with a knob; Jeff Beck might beg to differ... On a different note, this is my intro to Lenny Breau. Came here from the Rick Beato Andy Summers interview. Andy Summers states "Lennny Breau, world's greatest guitarist". I am looking forward to learning more!
We used to go listen to Lenny at "No Tomatoes" in Auburn, ME, in the late '70's when he was in town visiting family. Amazing that sometimes there were only a few people there and we almost got private concerts. He certainly was one of the best guitarists in the world. And had no fake affect. He was a nice, genuine guy.
You guys are really causing me flashbacks!! My 1st time on stage was the Piece of Work Pub across the street from No Tomatoes. Watched many a band in the "cellar Door" basement club throughout the late 70's and early 80's. Thanks for bringing those memories back. Watched Arlo play different clubs around Lewiston/Auburn during that time, also.
I still remember the first time I saw this video, that was my introduction to Lenny. My jaw dropped. In terms of guitar music, it was a life changing experience. I had never seen anything like that, a guitarist playing alone hypnotic quartal harmony like an advanced version of Joe Pass. And onestly I vastly prefer this version to the original one of McCoy Tyner and I love McCoy Tyner. Just one of the best things I have ever seen on a guitar.
First time to hear him play. Mind blown. One thing I learned - he uses or creates jazz chords that maybe you or I have stumbled upon while practicing but would never use because it sounds so unusual and maybe even musically improper. Yet, he plows right ahead with those odd chords and it ends up connecting the dots and sounding great. Amazing!
Wow, listen to the end. Lenny's ability to invent ways of playing was about to make a huge leap with a special 12 string. My god, what would he have been able to express then would have turned the world of guitar upside down.
Lenny was a troubled genius who, unfortunately, never really reached his peak due to his drug and alcohol dependency. Read his biography...."One Long Tune". It is truly a sad story of perhaps the most gifted guitarist to ever pick up the instrument. I know of no one today who is on the same level. That being said, it would have been so great if Lenny had recorded 2 or 3 CDs worth of Beatles tunes before we lost him.
This is an excellent clip and the interview with the guitar builder is very informative. Who is the interviewer? (And I had no problem at all reading the red on black text--I thought this whole presentation looked first rate.) Thank you for these posts!!
Glad you enjoyed the clip/interview. The interviewer in our posts would prefer to remain anonymous but we can tell you that the interviews were all done between 1999 and 2005 for a major project on Lenny Breau.
Interesting tid-bit ..There is a gentleman hand builder some exquisite guitars.. His name is Allen Beadsell and he makes Beardsell guitars.. Top shelf craftsman ..Anyway his little shop is currently in the old Garnet factory in Winnipeg Manitoba.. This is the town Lenny kicked around and did some C.B.C. and well known club dates etc.. So Allen makes a thing called the model 5 and its a 7 string .The model 5 is a new body style specifically tailored to fit the sonic requirements and freaky french hairstyles that get tucked under the jaunty beret of that unchained Django of a nasal-inflected, baguette-blasting beast, the mighty manouche guitar. I am t sure if Lenny and Allen ever did dealings with each other but they were both Winnipeggers and Allen is still making guitars.. I wonder if his 7 string had anything to do with inspiration from Lenny. Any way thats the Winnipeg connection with Lenny Allen and the old Garnet shop .. Gar Gilles.. all legendary stuff.. Most guitar players in Winnipeg are big on lenny and many of us played with the people he did the C.B.C. session with in subsequent years..Reg Keln + Ron Halldorson ... so I thought I would share that info . here's a link to those guitars. www.beardsellguitars.com/manouche

effing genius. Words fail.
Love Lenny, Love Kirk and forever gratitude for helping the music shine!!

Lenny and I were friends. He called me up the day he received this guitar, to come over and see it.
Love this video...Visions is one of my Favorite McCoy Tyner tunes ad Lenny's approach is steeped deep into my mind.
Great to have new improved footage of this inspired performance by Lenny 🌹 thanks lots for posting
I don't think there's another guitarist who could've worked up that Tyner piece. Brilliant!
One of the best ever
It just flows, he‘s not even thinking about it
He already thought about. And he is thinking about parts of it, but muscle memory is doing the rest.
Much better copy than the 5th or 6th generation copy I had!
Oh yeah... the incredible 7 string adventure. Thanks!!
Brilliant. Thanks for posting.

Incredibly clean and interesting, Lenny has so much talent and creativity
This was really great, Lenny Breau was just Top Shelf.
Thanks for this!
Richard Smith plays a Kirk Sands nylon string guitar and he loves it.
Another great player and a great guy.
Holy shit😳🤩
This is cool 😎
Damn Lenny could shred
A rare talent gone too soon.

Drugs and alcohol helped him focus and get as good as he did.
A very fair and honest book I might add.
Now you can find extended range instrument galore. Everyone and their grandmother will make one. Both higher and lower.
And yet nobody sounds like LB 🤔 Interesting
Amazing musician, senseless, tragic end!

Thanks. Note: red on black is not too easy to read (the titles)
Sorry you had a problem with it. We'll consider that for our next post.
@@thelennybreauarchives5675 Thanks! Love your channel. Lenny was so amazing!
Who made the pickups?
Bruce Cockburn could have riffed off this...great picking style. "Seventh string lucky?"
anybody know if that guitar is hallow or chambered ?
Chambered I am sure.
Visions: Watching someone whose technical proficiency was probably unparalleled, as he played quite unenjoyable music.
is this song related on any form to Rush.......
"visionS", plural...innit?
No, although Lenny sometimes called it 'Visions', the original McCoy Tyner tune is 'Vision'.
