  • This recording was made in the home of Lenny's friend and fellow Winnipeg guitarist, Jim Pirie. Lenny seems to be showing Jim the Bill Evan's influenced changes he uses for the tune rather than a solo instrumental version of the old standard. He hummed the melody without elaboration while playing through these changes. It may be that the two were going to collaborate on a duet arrangement of the song and Lenny was showing Jim the changes he used.
Lenny played a very different instrumental version of 'My Funny Valentine' on his first RCA album--'Guitar Sounds From Lenny Breau'--in 1968. The song remained a staple of his repertoire until his death and it was a vehicle for some of his most remarkable reharmonizations.
The photo accompanying the song shows Lenny with his first wife Valerie ca. 1960 in Winnipeg not long after they married in their late teens. Lenny and Valerie had two children, Melody--the first of Lenny's three daughters--and Chet. We obtained a copy of this photo from the late Valerie Breau (nee St. Germaine) in ca. 2000. The photographer is unknown.

Love to hear him play this song. He played so many variations of this tune, and each one is a treasure.

Lenny was a tremendous performer. His voice was original, which made him sound even more interesting.
