  • In the late 1970s, a young film maker named Lorenzo DeStephano approached bebop guitar giant Tal Farlow about making a documentary on his life and music. Although he was a very highly regarded guitarist in the 1950s, Tal had soured on the music industry and quit the music business to become a sign painter in Sea Bright, New Jersey. Still, he agreed to participate in DeStephano's documentary and when asked which contemporary guitarist he'd wanted to have as a guest in the film, Tal immediately mentioned Lenny Breau.
Tal's admiration of Lenny's playing was mutual as Lenny had been greatly influenced by the older guitarist and had spent many hours learning Tal's lines and chord forms during his early formative years as a jazz guitarist in the late fifties and early sixties. When DeStephano invited him to appear in the documentary, Lenny immediately agreed. He met Tal for the first time in May of 1980 at Tal's home in Sea Bright, NJ where the two spent the afternoon talking and jamming. That night they played at a local club called Sign of the Times. The gig was taped and released as the album 'Chance Meeting'.
Both guitarists enjoyed playing with one another on this date so when the manager of the club Little Sandy's Jazz Review in Beverly, MA asked Tal to do a gig on their stage, he suggested that the room book Lenny and him as a duo. The club agreed and on October 30th, 1980, Tal and Lenny played two high energy sets at the club to a wildly appreciative audience. Both guitarists were in fine form and high spirits for the gig.
It isn't known who was responsible for recording the gig but a decent quality tape of the show was recorded that night which the Lenny Breau Archives will be posting in three parts.
