  • Lenny Breau was more or less itinerant in the early/mid 70s and lived for short periods of time in various Canadian cities including his adopted home town of Winnipeg where he played a number of gigs in 1974-75 with old and new musical friends.
One of these was at a venue in the city's Fort Garry Hotel called The Left Bank. It was best-known as a disco/dance club but occasionally hosted bands playing other types of music.
This recording is taken from a gig that Lenny played there probably sometime in 1974 with his old friend Ron Halldorson on bass and Billy Graham on drums. Billy was originally from Montreal and had a long history as a jazz musician that included a gig with Charlie Parker in the 1950s.
Mark Cohen, a student of Lenny's, recorded part of The Left Bank gig and we present it with his permission. (Thanks, Mark!)

Someone had the good sense to record live performances of Lenny Breau. Lenny's accuracy when soloing is impeccably precise, and every note rings out and never sounds sloppy. He was a genius and super humble ... thank you again for your legendary channel

Mark Cohen, one of Lenny's students in the 1960s, did have the good sense to record many of Lenny's performances live and from radio/TV. He's been super generous in sharing this material as well as some excellent photos of Lenny.

Man, Lenny deserved more recognition during his life. Though I am more than grateful for these recordings, it would have been great to have high quality recordings. That being said, this recording conveys Lenny, Billy and Ron's musical spirit. Long live Lenny Breau.

Couldn't agree more. It's a shame that the level of playing on some of these "bootlegs" wasn't captured on more high quality recordings, particularly his playing in the 80s, which was off the charts in my humble opinion.

Vision is one of my favourite tunes played by Lenny..
This is the fastest I have ever heard him play this tune..

I wonder if this venue was on the main floor where the lounge currently is or in the basement which turned into a hot rock style nightclub around this time..
