Behind the Scenes at a Monastery | Drama! Intrigue! Sitting on Your Butt!!
A recent email exchange with a Zen friend kept me up all night and got me up early the next morning to make this vid! My friend was critiquing the fulltime Zen monk as...arguably...a special species of coward who hides in his/her robes to avoid the "real world."
Dude had a point.
In this video we go behind the scenes during my time at the Mount Baldy Zen Center and talk about the whole arc of a monk's path.
First: You're a scholarship student. You can stay at the monastery for free if you work your butt off, follow the rules, carry your load (and a few other people's loads, too) etc. But you can't stay in that role forever. Eventually you have to...

Single Pointed Meditation: How to Do NOTHING in ZEN

Some of the best advice we get in Zen can often seem like the most contradictory. We are told to "do nothing" on the cushion, to "manifest no mind." "No stinking thinking!!" is how one monk used to put it to me. (A monk for whom, btw, ahem, thinking too much wasn't a problem.) So. How do we "do nothing"? When I first started practice I had this notion of becoming a monk. How enlightening and cool it must be and only monks truly understand zen. Then while sitting I had a moment where the birds were chirping and my family were all sleeping and I realized that this is it. This moment. Breathing, sitting in posture, being an open vessel of moments just transpiring for one to the next. This is zen. Sure I’m sitting in my sweats and not a rokusu and robes. Sure my beard is way too long by monastic proclamation. But this is it. No dig against monks I appreciate all of their efforts and the understanding they bring. But I wasn’t wanting to become a monk to learn. I wanted to become a monk to escape my current position in life. By my own understanding of practice that is flawed. And the very reason to not become a monk. It was why I started practice in the first place. To accept things just as they are and to stop running away from the issues that troubled me. So I basically took up a monks way the best I could while still feeding my family and going to work and paying my mortgage and all the other things in “real” life whatever the hell the means. I train mostly alone but occasionally go to a small sitting group at the Austin Zen Center and that is my way. I appreciate everything the monastic life has to offer and think it is a good way for some people to be. But if we were all monks there would be no need for monks. I kind of see it now like they are the teachers and give the lessons. And us lowly little laymen put it in to practice outside the monastery and in that relationship The Way is continued. Thank you for this video, it really helps put things into a context for those considering that way as one they wish to assume. Good talk buddy. Side note. I just snagged a copy of Zen Confidential from Half Priced Books. Looking forward to the read.

I'm glad to see that you didn't get too attached to your disappointment about the election. I have a question and a quote. 1. I rarely get to go to my Zen center. It is Snbyo-Kyodan, and everyone there is a lay practitioner. The teacher (who insists on being referred to as Michael) is the only person with any kind of dharma transmission, does give dharma talks and leads sessions. But I don't have a car, and the center is very far from the nearest bus stop. Anyway, it seems every time I do get to attend, it's "samu Sunday" 30 min zazen followed by 3 hours of cleaning and landscaping. I always try to "die into" the cleaning and remember that this is the practice in action. A part of me feels samu is more important than the talks I seem to always miss. But another part of me feels like "why am I doing all this for a center that I rarely get to attend any other activities. I should be with my elderly parents, cleaning their house..." So, what do you think? Samu or parents? Or are they both kinda the same thing as long as you "die into what you're doing "? 2. Quote from a Christian sermon I heard recently that maybe...? Applicable to my question. "Love is what turns selfishness into selflessness. " Thanks again Jack!

What does it mean to you exactly in Zen?

    • @zenconfidential25

I think for me it just means having a perspective or seeming to manifest a paradigm shift where one's center of gravity expands beyond one's self. Big time. That's how I see it, but yeah, problematic word!!

I like transcendence as "freedom from" or "non-dependence upon" - as in Krishnamurti's "freedom from the known" or zen's non-dependence on words. We transcend the self when the self is seen clearly for what it is. A problem is transcended when it is seen completely, in its entirety

    • @macdougdoug

@@zenconfidential25 The same who or what that is reading these words, is the usual answer - hopefully with the understanding that we don't know who or what that is. Are we looking for an entity with some independant existence? Certainly this feeling and concept of being this all important center (me) of existence, the apparent free agent that gives meaning to suffering, is just a concept and a feeling, so it cannot be that which sees.

The really crazy thing is is this is like really really really hard to become a monk for life for anyone and I know a lot of monks that are out from my end of Buddhism and they still have to get jobs. They still have to do things there’s not a whole lot of value that just put on their practice other than what they are doing and no one is seeing people don’t know what they don’t know right ultimately Spirituality is a racket and a lot of yogis. Do things in regards to get you to drop the change because well it’s their karma to sell it. The best thing to see with all of this is if you are doing Buddhism as you’re living and selling it because you have permission, then your llama has put you in a place for your Roshi Has put you in that place that is your job. That is your practice, especially if you’re trying to keep a temple alive temple keeping is not easy nor householding shit just by being one percent of the 1.5 that inhabit the United States of America and when I say the one percent of that I’m referring to White male practitioners. I will say that you really can’t do anything about ignorance and there’s a lot that is done that could be perceived in the wrong light. There are a lot of traditions and practices that are vastly misunderstood and ultimately follow your teacher. Follow your guru. Follow your practice walk present And ultimately know that this brings clarity. Good luck to anyone and keep doing it even if it is hard, maybe it’s hard because the karma dictates it anytime I pick up a new practice from my teacher. It is extremely hard very first and it opens up lots of worms from invisible cans. Good luck to all my loved brothers and sisters out there as Yogi and yogine s much love Jack keep it up. You do it all a good service with good humor much love, brother.

Monkey-minds and Podcast brains need each other I guess. I have pondered our current political predicament myself. I think we have been intentionally angered and scared and confused.. Is it the government? or is it the news media? Is it the arts? Or is it just paranoia? I don't know.. but it is so pervasive that it sure seems intentional. I looked up Creation Lake on Goodreads and it seems that, judging by the comments, Rachel Kushner did herself no favors by reading it herself. People spoke very little about what she said, but fixated on how she said it..

Don’t know mind is like the mind of a hunter. You need the mind of a hunter to catch those pesky thoughts as they arise. You’re not going to catch many thoughts with podcast mind. Probably.

Sorry. A bit off topic here, but i thought i should inform you that the "handshake" and "massage parlor " sutras have been added to the Baldy Cliff Records. Thank you for your lived experience and insight. You will not be receiving monetary compensation as this will fall under "fair use". Now if you'd excuse me, ill go back to pretending i know anything about Zen.🙏 Namaste😅

Hi Jack, you often talk about books you enjoy, so I have a book-related question: Could you please give an introduction/overview of Sasaki Roshi's "Manifesting Zen" and "Tathagata Zen"? What kind of topics do they cover? Do they capture the essence of Sasaki Roshi's teachings in general? I find "Buddha Is The Center of Gravity" quite a difficult book to get into, so I'm curious about the Roshi's other books - maybe they are a more accessible and complete representations of his teachings? They are quite expensive (ordering from Germany), and I'm not sure whether or not to spend that much money on them... Anyway, I would really appreciate to hear your thoughts on these books in a future video. 🙏🏼

hey my friend, Buddha is the center of gravity is easily his most accessible book, and manifesting Zen is way more difficult, and about tathagata zen is all but impossible! you know, rereading Buddha is the center of gravity is a good bet. but you have given me a good video idea, an overview of those two tricky books.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, your podcast has been profoundly helpful for me these past few days. I live in the U.S., and I'm pretty sure that we've gone pure bat-shitty crazy. Efforting to not effort in relation to clinging to my practice. Anyone remember that Twilight Zone episode about pausing the world with a TV remote? Yeah, I'm looking for that remote.

I have to come back to this one too. There's enough here where I just can't leave it half understood and move on to something else like I usually do.. Or, maybe I should and just wait to understand it suddenly!

Podcast brain won the election meanwhile. You know, the Japanese and Chinese languages are intentionally ambiguous. This forces one’s mode of communication into intuition naturally as you can’t directly trust words or concepts. We can learn from that 🙏 thank you for the material

That’s a beautiful point about the Japanese and Chinese languages, thank you. There’s so much sophistication in systems that force us to be subtle.
