I like the way the Sniper Elite series values stealth in the later games, by having clear consequences if you get spotted by making your character so vulnerable at close ranges and at long ranges if a sniper shoots you in the face, but you also get rewarded if you escape from a situation and by a succesful relocation if you get heard.

The best stealth games are usually disguised puzzle games. Also, no mention of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins seems blasphemous for a video on stealth games.

It feels pretty crazy to say TLOU2 has "watered down stealth" when it's actually incredibly in depth. Were you playing on too low a difficulty? The AI is more than competent, especially compared to most stealth games these days. Some of my favorite stealth gaming moments, happened in that game. There was one encounter where i ended up hiding upstairs in a house, but they had followed me in and were sweeping the bottom floors. I decided to make a little noise to try and lure one upstairs for the ol' throat stab, knowing one was at the bottom of the staircase. I was expecting the usual "i think i heard a noise, I'll go check it out" kinda thing, which the vast majority of games would do. But, i assume because the AI knew i had to be in the house, it instantly called out my position to everyone without ever going upstairs. I was outsmarted by the AI, because i was relying on typical dumb AI behavior.

Outstanding retrospective, unbelievable insight. Adore Asylum, put it on a platform above all else in the series. But never paid any attention to the comics and was pretty disinterested in the spirit of Amadeus conceptually, glad you deep dived into both because that was magnificent to learn about!

I got the early access Hyper Light Breaker and started playing it. The game has a dparry mechanic, but it just feels... not good. The game uses flash indicators, like Dead Cells or Metroid Dread, to tell you when an attack is coming; however, the timing is inconsistent. Sometimes the flash means you are about to be hit. Sometimes it means you will be hit in two seconds. Inconsistency makes it unreliable. And it just stops the enemy's attack, which you could also do by shooting or hitting them before they attack. Or just dodge away. Those are better options. There was a lot more I was having trouble articulating, but this video is really well made and is gonna help me immensely with giving feedback to the deva, so thanks! plus, I thought the "dad's belt" joke was funny

The issue for a lot of stealth games is that they push too much into the "wait around until the AI stares at the wall" trope. Yes games will often have alternatives, but the core gameplay makes that the easiest fall-back for the players, especially on a first playthrough. Even games that it looks like we're both considering a masterpiece, the Dishonored franchise, has a bit of that issue. Someone unexperienced will have a much slower and boring gameplay than someone who knows what they're doing. The "get good" argument is dumb because a lot of people may leave before that can happen. Dishonored will make players do away with that slower style pretty quick, probably as soon as you've escaped from prison, but it's still a thing that most players will go through. (+ Dishonored also has that chaos system that would need a total rework for the next instalment if it ever comes, but that's another topic) A lot of action-adventure AAA games will have that trait too. And struggle with it a lot more than Dishonored does. I absolutely loved Ghost of Tsushima, but I'm also aware that its stealth is just a faster version of that, due to the enemies not being that smart. A basic change of having the AI realize that the Ghost is here, but not knowing where exactly, and just acting accordingly would go a long way. Maybe they start searching more things, growing paranoid and nervous, pushing them to make more stupid mistakes or checking more stupid spots, allowing the player to make the most of it. This would make the AI continue to do dumb stuff, but this time it feels like it's directly caused by the player's actions and not just the AI being stupid.

it's hard to just stumble upon new game analysis/essay channel that's actually good and made with passion and talent so I'm really happy I randomly stumbled on this video nowadays most of channels of similar theme are just actually rundowns of what happens in said game good luck with your channel I'll definitely be waiting for more once I get caught up with rest of your videos
