LOL "decided to be fun." careful there, there are games that creators actually do say, this isn't about fun, this is about addressing a real issue. Of course these games also have staff blaming players for not buying the games.

2:20 i love how you say "the larger marketing push behind the game" lmao, like the only guy doing advertising officially was Johan Pilestedt with his tweets... and thats it. fullstop. there was not a single whisper of advertising anywhere to be seen, it wasnt even on the steam front page on launch day.
so how did it manage to break records with absolutely no marketing? its simple. they made a single video, which plays when you first boot up the game. and that video is supposed to be a satirical fake-propaganda piece about the premise of the game while making fun of it all in a half serious way. but this effectively meme video somehow became a true propaganda video that rallied the pc, ps5 and xbox communities together in a never before seen unified coalition of allied forces spreading managed democracy across the galaxy. breaking decades old scars and bitterness between them all for the common goal of living out their starship troopers x halo reach/odst fantasies that microsoft/343 industries have blue balled them with for too long.
then when the honeymoon phase of hype surrounding the video subsided, it retained the vast majority of its playerbase and baffling every projection analysts wildest expectations. due in part to the amazing true live service system that is actually "live service", where instead of waiting for pre-planned roadmap based content that most live service are known for (along with recycled seasonal events), they actually have a revolutionary new system that turns the entire industry on its head with how smart it is. its name? .... Joel.
literally, helldivers 2 has a dungeon master called Joel. anyone who loves D&D like crazy would gush over hearing "video game" and dungeon master" in the same sentence.
secondly is the incredibly fair monetization system, with microtransactions that actually feel "micro" instead of "macro", like seriously look at the cod battlepass worth $10 (up to $40 depending on where you live) or the over $50 you need to spend to afford a megabundle from overwatch 2 and tell me it isnt a macrotransaction. you know how much the most expensive microtransaction is in helldivers 2? $19.99 for 2100 super credits. thats enough for 2 entire premium warbonds. TWO. you know how much the most expensive superstore armor is worth? $1.99... and you know what the best part is? ... you can earn it in game. you dont have to spend a dime past the initial purchase of the game. exactly as all things should be. you paid for the whole experience so you should be getting the whole experience. and helldivers 2 does that so well.

I have a possibly insane take:
People are realizing that they're tired of competitive play. As with Palworld with tiredness towards Pokemon games, people are tired of competitiveness. We've had the era of every game needing a hardcore competitive scene and aggressive PvP. Meta was always talked about and can be subject to constant controversy with buff and nerf updates. It's always the need to one up someone else. And as time goes, you just get tired. People forgot to enjoy the very games they were meant to have fun with because they either get angry at the person owning them or sweat tends to be mentally and physically draining. I've seen it with The Finals, MW3 and even the recent Halo Infinite seasons. They spike for a day or two only for it to slowly become irrelevant the next day. Recent singleplayer games have sparked back the desire to just play a game at your own pace and however you want it played, and with Co-op games, it just brings back the fun of actually doing things together, not against one another. The amount of comaraderie in the community is astounding. While there are some bad apples, the community has always been wanting to band together against Termanids and Automatons and we laugh and enjoy every the moment, even if it's a mission loss.
In a way, nature is healing. We're finally going back to the days when we all bought video games because we want to enjoy them and not because we have something to prove for something so insignificant as competitive status.

I was hooked on it, but what killed it for me was the grind for Po8 that felt like a second job. And the fact that they will reset all upgrades and production facilities every season undermines the hard work you put it, and you then have to regain those manufacturers and upgrades.
A lot of people made the argument that you can just get your upgrades back quickly from the Po8 you have left over, but what they fail to realize is that a lot of us don't stick to just one game. We all split our time into different games, which means we can't generate enough Po8 to get all the upgrades. If we couldn't even get all the upgrades, what makes them think we can regain our cheaper upgrades quickly?

    First rule of Business 101:
A happy customer will tell 2 friends, and an unhappy customer will tell 10 friends.
Word of mouth is THE single best marketing campaign! Plus, it wasn't about fun or luck, it was about simplicity! The game's concept is SIMPLE! Go here.. shoot aliens, blow things up, extract! Democracy needs no propaganda! No intricate cut scenes taking away from the action. Nothing to pull you back and be like "can we please just stop the talking!?!?" Plus, the creators didn't monetize the game. Sure, they have it where you CAN buy stuff and advance with real currency, but you don't HAVE to. Everything in the game can be gotten IN THE GAME! Lastly, it's so successful right now because people ae fed up with the money grabbing garbage that AAA companies are releasing. To me, seeing the CEO of the company say "Hey.. While I would love your money, I'd rather you wait till we fix the problems with our servers not being able to handle the load we didn't expect!" means a TON of respect for that CEO and that company! I'm not much for this kind of game but that comment alone is enough to make me buy the game just for the sake of supporting the company (even though i'd probably only log like 3 hours of gameplay on it).

Then there's the game having bonus content you're getting more value out of however minor or major it is and since I have a digital PS5 pre-downloads are convenient so I don't have to buy a game then wait x amount of time to play it even when it's already available no matter how good my dl speed is.
There are also other cases for incentive like Hi-Fi Rush on PS5 which has a 10% discount for PS+ members when pre-ordering and since that's a game that's relatively cheap, already know I like (played it via game pass trial) and anticipate the PS5 version being the best play on console (PC adding Dualsense support is the only reason I can't say best place to play in general) there's no reason why *I* wouldn't think that benefits me.
Now in the case of people pre-ordering several months before release (especially if it's physical) I don't quite get; especially due to potential shipping issues. There are multiple factors when it comes to this and I haven't been burned yet.

@@hehitmeinthekneegur1551 Idk about anyone else but there are multiple factors that I consider. These include waiting a few weeks before release to make sure I can play it day one (the previews that dropped for HD2 in particular only solidified my confidence anyway), what extra content I'm getting out of it no matter how minor and having a pre-download option (as I'm digital only this gen) so even when the game is already available I don't have to wait x amount of time to play as it'll be sitting there waiting for me on release day.
There are even games that have discounts as a pre-order incentive on PlayStation (PS+ members only though iirc) and HFR is the latest example of this with a 10% discount.
Now I will say that pre-orders several months before release I don't quite get as it's much harder to assume you'll have free time to play a game day one compared to weeks or days in advance from release. This is especially true for physical copies due to potential shipping issues from the distributor.

Just make a challenging coop game with friendly fire and bombastic moments, that's what's timelessly enjoyable. Left 4 Dead has this. Deep Rock Galactic has this. Lethal Company has this. Payday had this. Hell, even Earth Defense Force, a game adjacent to helldivers 2, had this.

Still a lot more to it though. First game you brought up is Left 4 Dead, but Back 4 Blood follows a lot of the same formula and people weren't super fond of that one. Also "bombastic moments" have to feel organic to work in this style of game and that's a hard thing to achieve

    • @WMan37
      @WMan37 11 месяцев назад

@@AsadAnjum Back 4 Blood messed with the elegant simplicity of Left 4 Dead's gameplay loop, lacked a lot of the under the hood polish, modding support, survivors that were quotable and people liked, and introduced a card system that was generally implemented in a way that people didn't like, also the special infected were not well designed, many reviews on the game touch upon this, among other things that if I listed here would make this comment way too long. Back 4 Blood's failure is formed from a compounding list of small to big things that all add up to a generally not enjoyable experience, there's a video by a channel called CrowbCat on it that only scratches the surface of the problems with the game.
I get what you're trying to say however: That my comment is glossing over a lot of context and is ultimately reductive, you're right. I should have given it proper elaboration. That being said, the idea of the bombastic moments being organic was kind of assumed.

While a little luck may have been a factor, I think chalking any sizable portion of this games success to luck us a disservice to your viewers.
The Devs of this game have experience in the armed services, so they understand military equipment and more over they understand thir player base.
They fully get that we as players are tired of the AAA motto of give less and ask for more. They get that gamers just want a good fum time and so far seem to not he inclined to shit on that good faith they earned.
Lime the players that were banned for arguing over pride capes and nation capes "no politics, only game." There is no geter cause than super earth.
The devs tapped into an, until recently, lost art of making games the old way. $40, and you get a fully finished (or, in this case, mostly finished) game that is fun and engaging. No bull shit micro-transactions. No one pushing an agenda its just a way to unwind.
In a way, it sparks a deep sense of nostalgia of a simpler time of gaming when you an your buddies could load into a Halo 3 lobby or even a halo reach ord lobby and just play.
The devs found the live service done right formula and game us a masterpiece that doesn't take itself seriously, doesn't try to sell you something and aims to entertain you in a way that focuses around team work and a shared goal.
Luck may have had a factor, but the efforts of the devs to just make a good game can not go unstated and the communities word of mouth praise, the memes and story rhe players craft about the game that the devs adopt is all a love letter to a lost art. One where us gamers get our money's worth when we buy a game.

Think of it...most games that has been out is oversaturated with Battle Royale designs, First person shooters, skill base games, horrible story telling, bad game character designs, an money grabs an "Masked fun" games.
Most companies doesn't want to be different from one another an bring fresh new creative fun ideas and original ideas to players to bring fun, challenging, story telling games to players.
Yes, gaming companies been taking a hit over the last few years since 2020 because of leaks, hackers, an toxic players threatening gaming devs and hackers demanding money from directors and gaming companies.
So yes the companies and the community of gamers is in a bad place right now. Will the the relationship between companies and players be fixed, I say with do in time.
Do I think it's possible for gaming companies to reach the level of success like helldivers, yes I do but only if video games are beneficial for all around for players the companies an just making games fun again.

This is the single most asked question by corporate giants who have ruined 99.9% of gaming and brought us to Helldivers. Its also why there is no such thing as nostalgia anymore.
True gaming is about fun of the game. About 13 years ago, that idea was lost. Helldivers took the best ideas of gaming's past and a particular set of older movie concepts and gave people some of their imagination back. The lore grows by the hour. Our actions write the story.
Just let the project enjoy its success. The unpredictable events, and the development crew, the bugs, make this game awesome. No need to worry about recreating a success that hasnt even peaked yet.

I think the one best thing that is replicable for the games' success is their marketing. Getting rid of the cold or fake corporate messaging and instead presenting the game as is, with a narrative twist here and there, does wonders. Sensible monetization (and in the case of the live-service like elements, they are balanced by the cooperative interaction that wouldn't be possible without stable funding) sounds pretty good to many players as well.
Although I can definitely see studios jumping on the bandwagon and saturating the social media space with their "in-character" marketing that it could become void within a few years. The key is to be real, not to use the character-marketing to hide your blunders, but to spice your messaging with it. Take note of how Arrowhead handled that patch controversy over the one dev who let loose - there wasn't any sugarcoating it with the Helldivers narrative cause it was serious.

It also is casual enough that you aren't stressing how good the other players are although it is important. Lastly, for some reason, it feels like they actually care about their game and vision while communicating effectively with their player base. Reason number B: It is a AA full on PvE Co-op game (no PvP other than accidental team killing) that has been missing from the gaming marketplace pretty much since the Ps4/Xbox 1 era started.
Razón número tres: It has a very fun and engaging play cycle that doesn't take itself too seriously while also not being too childish.

There’s no pvp, most people are being friendly and helpful and even if everyone dies and the mission fails, about 90% of the response isn’t “oh no we lost” it’s “we did as much as we could for Super Earth, and we will do it again GET IN THE HELLPOD LOSERS WE’RE GOING LIBERATING!”
When was the last time we got a game where people were actually supportive of each other even when we were losing miserably? Seriously, even Destiny people will kick you if you die a single time and aren’t using “the meta build”. Helldivers I run the most random big guns you can get and it still works, I’m still covering my squad, still being effective in the team and rounding the edges the other guys can’t cover. Honestly there is no “meta” because everything even the starter weapons have a purpose even in higher difficulties
Just had the sniper of the group unlock the Penetrator and I’m a little scared of her with that thing. She’s a menace with the limited ammo of the anti-mat sniper, now she has MORE bullets to tear through everything

They had to discontinue all ads that they already paid for, disallow all digital copies to be sold and give 3 weeks of free playtime for those in 20k+ queues on the servers (as well as profusely apologize, take responsibility and offer frequent updates and in-depth analysis of their system structure). It actually broke their legacy login server code and they found multiple errors that they had to fix or rewrite. Which actually fixed a rare client crash for the log-in in the process.

I think there are 2 things that people aren't talking about with the Release of Helldivers 2 in what made it explode like it did those are
    1. The current landscape of AAA gaming and Gaming in General.
It's no secret that gaming is really shit right now. No games that come out right now really feel particularly good. It's why Palworld was the biggest game to come out this year before Helldivers 2 came and dropped a 500KG bomb on top of Palagos Islands. Helldivers 2 is a very well put together, very competent, very fun game and even more than that the landscape of Coop shooters is... eehhh... The last big release we got for 4 Player Coop shooters was Back 4 Blood, I think? And that game fucking blew. People have been gagging for a fun 4 Player Coop Shooter and not only is Helldivers that, it's that and more. It's not trying to wring you for every penny, it's fairly monetized, it's a fun game, it's feature complete and despite some of the technical issues outside of that it's not really that buggy. Every game will have bugs, especially on release. Everyone's rigs are different. However Helldivers 2 runs very well on what feels like every system and with the exception of some recent updates that have sort of borked the game, they've earned more than enough goodwill that it's not going to kill the game.
    2. The timing.
When Helldivers 2 dropped, there wasn't really any big releases around that time. We had Palworld as mentioned before, and Suicide Squad which released to bombing reviews, but otherwise what was really released in this time frame? There's Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Rebirth, but that's only on Playstation at the moment so the potential playerbase for that is already halved and they're very different experiences. People who play Helldivers 2 will also likely play FF7R: Rebirth and vice versa, as they're not competing games, their player base Venn Diagrams will likely overlap quite a lot and where one is a Single Player Story Focused JRPG, the other is a 4 Person Coop 3rd Person Shooter. They don't really get any more different than that.
Obviously it might just be lucky that they released it when they did in the landscape that they released it in, but although I don't believe it to be a calculated move on Sony or Arrowhead's part, I also don't think it's fair to say "The game simply got lucky". That really is a disservice to all the hard work that they put into the game.
And I will be reporting you to the nearest Democracy Officer for treason.

I think Helldivers 2 struck a nerve, especially with the internet. The ''Hell yeah, Space Vietnam''-meme kind of Nerve.

I think this game perfectly launched when every people were tired of "PVP competitive games filled with tones of hackers"
The finals was as good as this game, but as a nature of PvP, they had to struggle against hackers.

I would say there are multiple factors. It's fun 1st and foremost, it's a cooperative PVE game which incentives people to encourage their friends to get the game also, it doesn't insult the player base, it's apolitical to real world events, and doesn't have a rapist mentality of trying to plunder every cent from your wallet. What is not to love.

I literally bought helldivers 2 because because of the down to earth price point, virtually no microtrasactions, and finally the devs saying we will never support pay to win.

You know if it was made for an audience a decade ago maybe helldivers 2 is the messiah we needed. A game from the olden times. No one expected a helldrop from an old game on the modern gaming battlefield. Even niko or doom guy might have problems with a squad of helldivers fighting for the gaming industry lol

What I like best about HD2 is that there are no rainbow capes allowed.
