Exploring the West Nueces River Valley
I took a long Sunday drive out past Uvalde into Kinney County to explore the West Nueces River valley. Most of the year, there's hardly any water in it at all, but with a bunch of rain at the end of August, I wanted to see what I could find out there for a little one day adventure.

Upgrades I've made to my 2014 Tundra

I've made a few upgrades to my 2014 Tundra 4X4 to take it from stock to a more versatile off roading truck. I did all the work myself (except for mounting the tires), with some help from my father, didn't spend a fortune, and got the majority of the information about doing these upgrades from the amazing Tundras forums, especially these three threads: www.tundras.com/threads/3-1-vs-3-2-toytec-s...

Hiking one of San Antonio's Newest Parks: Trueheart Ranch

Trueheart Ranch has a long history in San Antonio. Once a cattle and pecan farm, it is now a park owned by the San Antonio River Authority. Nueces River day trip - 9 miles kayaking and fishing

    We service a radio site at Dark Canyon and have traveled that road many times. No cell coverage back there. Always stay on the main dirt roads and don't take any of those sketchy ones that don't look traveled. There isn't a lot of traffic back there even on the main dirt roads but if you break down on one of those someone should eventually come along. Seen many rattlesnakes back there as well. The paved way in is either dark canyon road or Queen highway north of Carlsbad, much easier and safer route to travel. Be careful and be prepared.

One of the first things many (not all) members of the crews of B-17 and B-24 bombers would do when landing in England was to take a country right by the hardstand- they couldn't make it to the barracks. B-29 crews had no such problem. One of the most-used vault toilets in Colorado is probably the one at Independence Pass with a high number of travelers during open months and a high elevation at 12,095'.

    You are a better man than I am! I gave up on that access point while the dam was down because of the increased speed of flow , but I have some regret that I didn't see the river in its slightly more natural state while it was low. Now that the dam is repaired, I might do my confluence runs from there again instead of Cypress Bend, although the shallow section between the 35 and Old 81 bridges can be a bit fast, and portaging the dam can be tricky for noobs. I grew up in NB, so I know and love those waters (on weekdays). 😃

    I live in Carlsbad, NM. On the east side of Guadalupe mountains. You took the most indirect route possible. From Del City, TX to Dog Canyon is the most remote area imaginable. I've traveled, camped, caved, hunted and explored the area for 50yrs. I enjoyed your video greatly. But you missed all the best part of the Guadalupe Mountains. You were so close to the South Rim road, better camping, better views, bigger tress, higher elevation, and cooler temps. This place is so remote & off pavement. To get from Guadalupe Mountains Nat Park in TX, to Lincoln National Forest in NM is like 25 miles as the crow flies. But to get from one to the other is 200 mile drive in from the east on paved road. Or 80 mile from the west like you did, either way it is a 4 hr drive.

If you ever decide to go back to that area; South of HWY 137 near Queen (specifically down 412 / Cougar Rd [google maps] ) you can find plenty of free dispersed camping spots and some in nice protected areas in case of high wind. Pickett Rd is pretty vulnerable. Five Point Vista, beginning to Camp Wilderness Ridge trail 3008, and Dark Canyon Lookout Tower are all established rock/dirt roads you could take your truck on for excursions. They are “rocky” thou. There are a few along US 62 just to the east of the park. If you come from I-10 up highway 54 from Van Horn, the scenery is beautiful all the way up (that's at 1:05 - 1:20 in this video). When you get to US 62, you'd turn right (we went left to Dell City), and the overlooks will be not too far up 62 as you climb in elevation. Thanks for watching!

    Where did you park? Do you know of any other access points along the river?

      @lalelandadventures 11 месяцев назад

      For the King William stretch, you can park at the San Antonio River Authority offices on the weekends. It's at 100 E. Guenther, and the ramp to get from street level down to the river is just east of that parking lot. There is also access on the Eagleland portion on the other side of South Alamo, and there is an 8 mile paddling trail along the Mission Reach with several access points at parks along the way. More info about the Mission Reach is here: www.sariverauthority.org/be-river-proud/parks-trails/mission-reach-paddling-trail and here: tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/boat/paddlingtrails/inland/mission_reach/ I also have a video of us paddling the Mission Reach, putting in at Padre Park and paddling upstream a bit: ruclips.net/video/hCR0-Mu_3F0/видео.htmlsi=siQpi3s8lNzp2aQp

    Great video! I can see how the clear water is restricting the size of your catches. Maybe go the fly route?

    Looks amazing! If you ever have room for one more or need someone to kayak with. Hit me up! I've offered before. I have kayaks for every type of adventure. Depending on the trip/ situation I probably have one you can use if needed. Thanks for sharing your adventure(s)

    If you don’t mind me asking where are you parking / getting into the river to start or where are some good general areas

    • @lalelandadventures

      There are several road crossings along or just off SH 55 starting about 10 miles north of Uvalde and going all the way up to Barksdale. You'll be able to see where other people have parked on the sides of the roads or under bridges, just make sure you aren't trespassing.
