  • This summer, we took a two week road trip. Day 6 started with us leaving St. Cloud, Minnesota, and driving the 3 hours to Lake Vermilion. We rented a houseboat for 3 nights from the fine folks at Lake Vermilion Houseboats (vermilionhouse...)
Lake Vermilion is nearly 40,000 acres. We only explored a small fraction of it over the 3 days we were there. We enjoyed fishing, swimming, a little hiking, and trying to stay cool in the unseasonably warm weather. After 3 days on the lake, we left for Minneapolis with a short detour to Duluth to dip our toes in Lake Superior and have lunch.
In Minneapolis, we took in a Twins/White Sox game. This marks the 17th ballpark I've visited. Interestingly, the last time I saw a Twins game, they also played the White Sox, but it was in the Metrodome in 1992.
The next portion of our trip will be our last, spending a few days in Illinois before hightailing it back to San Antonio in a marathon, one-day drive.
In all, we traveled over 4000 miles, through 9 states, 3 national parks, 2 major league ballparks and a partridge in a pear tree, along with lots of time in the car. Our ultimate goal - spend 3 days in northern Minnesota before going to a family reunion in Illinois. We just took a very roundabout way of getting there.
I'd love to say this was an epic family road trip, but that name is already taken! It was pretty amazing, though, and a trip I'm sure my girls won't forget.
