Push the Button Thread Response for @mrhoffame #vinylcommunity
Nice selection Brian, I recently looked into the catalog of My Bloody Valentine and other ''related'' late-90s indie rock bands from the same period of time such as f.i. The Breeders. While at the Den Bosch fair, I set the goal to get ahold of one of those albums on vinyl, but I quickly abandon the idea haha. The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Electric Ladyland is one of these important records I grew up with. As a prog nerd I should like the Mellon Collie album, though I can't get around Billy Corgan's voice.. for some reasons.
You're just going to keep putting your accidental buy of Let It Be Naked in my face, aren't you? Great video, Brian. I have Nirvana Unplugged and Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness only on cd, too. But they are both on my vinyl wish list!
OMG HP the VC will outcast you if you don't get these classics on vinyl now!!! I was totally into Loveless in 1991. I'd just moved to Melbourne and discovered community radio. Wow! I got the repress direct from the My Bloody Valentine website about 5 maybe 10 (😲) years ago which are meant to be AAA. My uncle was the classic rock dude. I still think the John Cale version of Hallelujah best. Jeff Buckley is like Radiohead to me. When I'm in the mood I really like them but when I'm not I can't stand that super emotive singing which just sounds like crying to me. Marquee Moon I gotta admit is a must have on vinyl, but yeah pricey. I can't get around Billy Corgan's voice on Mellon Collie. I might be crazy but I thought he changed from a kinda whispery voice which I liked, to this super annoying nasally whine on that album. I don't know why but I didn't expect you to have a copy of JSBX. I have an Au Go Go vinyl copy of that album plus the rest on vinyl. I remember seeing them several times in the 90's and would've sworn they were the best band on the planet at that time too. They used to put on a hell of show. I never had Sticky Fingers until I bought that big AAA box set years ago and it has the zip. Can't You Hear Me Knocking is mind blowing. The downside of the box set is you get all of the shit albums from the 80's onwards too. My uncle had that Beatles weird cover comp too. I think I like Revolver best because She Said is my favourite Beatles song. I'm the same I grew up surrounded by them because of family but then discovered punk/new wave/post punk & it was all over. Viva Hate is the only Morrissey I own. Maybe I have a cd best of too. I have lots of 90's Australian bands on cd that never got issued on vinyl, but they're probably not considered classics and the fact that they were never on vinyl probably disqualifies me from this thread. Cheers...Ben
that television album man is such a good album and the track "Elevation" has a guitar riff that influenced the one on "Californication" sounds really similar surprised me when i first listened.
Taking the no logo fashion concept to new levels every video! I would do a video on this topic if my collection wasn’t in storage. I have that My Bloody Valentine CD as well. I first heard them at the Dance Cave when I lived briefly in Toronto. “I grew up in a classic rock household”…”He was for a time really interested in disco music, which really irritated me”…”But of course Jimi Hendrix was long dead before I knew anything about him”…”I quite like it”…I still have my CD copy of that Jeff Buckley album. Still love it. “I know that I’ve seen repressings of this, and I don’t know why I haven’t bought them”…I never understood Smashing Pumpkins. “I think I ruined it a bit for myself by playing it too often”…I have a very funny story about the first time I heard The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at a party in Toronto of all places, yet again. My friend had a place in the annex. I will never forget everyone singing along to that song “Brenda”…that was a wild time in the 90s.
A great response Brian, and an excellent thread idea by James👍I cannot stand bands with whiney male singers: REM and Pumpkins spring immediately to mind. Who are the Beatles, anyway?? I have exactly zero in my collection - in any format. 😂Here in Australia, vinyl died out in 1991, so a lot of Aussie music in the following years is CD only. Some are now getting re-issued, thankfully. Cheers from Oz. John D.
Hi Brian- I have a few ‘CD but not vinyl’ situations too…if you do track down MBV Loveless on vinyl look for the most recent reissue on Domino Records…easily the best. I was late to the game with Television and Marquee Moon is one I picked up on vinyl in the early 00s. I need Your Arsenal on vinyl, too. I may have to put together a video on this topic as well!! 🤔👍 Cheers-R
I mentioned to someone else that I could make it a goal for 2025 to pick up vinyl copies of all of these, but it is probably bot possible anyway. I'd be interested in your video on this topic!
I’ve been thinking about doing a response to James’ video if I find the time as it is a quandary in which I often find myself; should I really buy certain albums that I already have on CD. For years I only had The Beatles blue and red compilation albums before I started buying the others and I still only have my favorite on CD. I only have that Stones album and Morrissey album on CD as well.
Hi Randy, I am generally a really frugal person, so I am always alarmed when I duplicate my collection. Maybe there is something wrong with me 🙂 I'd be interested to see a response from you!
Nice response Brian, thanks for doing this. I totally get what you mean about the unpleasurability (??) of flicking through CDs in record stores, really not something I do anymore - usually if I buy a CD it's online or it's something I know I want so I can just march into a store and look for it. As you got into your video I thought we were going to coincide on everything, but then you diverted quite a lot on the fifth one, so I'll just share with you how we overlap (or not): Loveless - CD only (never seen the vinyl) Electric Ladyland - CD only (I once queued behind someone in a charity shop who was paying a hundred pounds for an original vinyl copy and that's the closest I've ever come to one, and yes it was the naked ladies edition). Grace - CD only (never seen the vinyl) Marquee Moon - CD and vinyl (reissue - one of the first records I bought when I got back into collecting seriously again) Nirvana Unplugged - never owned or heard it! (heard certain songs obviously) Mellon Collie - never owned or heard it (I have Siamese Dream on CD and that's it for SP) Jon Spencer - never owned or heard. Remember him from back in the day - will check it out. Sticky Fingers - vinyl only (original pressing but not the zip one) Beatles - CD (twice) and multiple vinyl Your Arsenal - never owned or heard. Have his debut on vinyl and all the Smiths on vinyl plus Queen is Dead on CD.
Very interesting differences, James. Maybe my goal for 2025 should be to pick up all of the albums I mentioned on vinyl. I wonder if that is possible 🙂 At the very least, I should probably get some Beatles! Or, I could buy all new things and stop the duplication!
Interesting topic. I was cringing a bit when you started naming Beatles albums you don't have. Help was a tad shocking, but at least you didn't name Rubber Soul, Revolver, Abbey Road and The White Album. Those are obvious staples in most collections. Nice video Brian.
Some real surprises there Brian. I have been thinking about doing a response to this since I saw James's video...cheers Dale
Hi Dale, I'd be curious to see a response from you 🙂
Your Beatle collection hurt my head, you need copies of any kind! Haha. I need to go lay down. Sticky Fingers is so good, Moonlight Mile is my favorite by the Stones.
Yeah, I do need some Beatles on vinyl probably!
Hey Brian. Great video. I have about half of those albums - the ones I like anyway. Cheers
Cool. Thanks!!
Cool to see CD related thread. To me also "all along in watchtower" is more Hendrix song, though I'm not sure whose version I heard first. Smashing pumpkins I am looking also on cheap CDs. I have that Beatles on CD also. I love it. And actually I am happy with cd, but something would be great to have on vinyl from them. mr. Finglish (Bäd Eglish Recs)
Hendrix owned All Along the Watchtower. I imagine that there are many examples of cover versions that are better than the original. . .
Hei hei Brian. I actually bought Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 3 times. First the CD when it came out, then once again soon after when I finnished at the film college in Denmark and realized that one of the cd's was most likely left behind or ended up in someone elses cd's. And then I got the vinyl box a few years ago. I also can't get myself to go down the vinyl rabbit hole as far as the Beatles go. I had and still have all the early days of CD cd's and then the black towershaped CD box set and the box sets that have come out over the years. But on vinyl... I have that US comp, Let it Be, the remaster singles vinyl and a couple of odd comps my dad got me when he tried to "stop me" listening to the Rolling Stones. Didn't work but did make me a McCartney fan (he bought me Tug of War). Fun to see why you don't have some of those on vinyl.
You win for having bought Mellon Collie three times! I do have cases where I have two different CD versions (regular and a remaster) plus a vinyl copy, but I try to avoid that. Your dad had a very interesting strategy to make you not listen to the Stones. That's fabulous!
@ My dad was born in 1924 so not a huge rock fan, but tried to guide me away from the ones that really got on his nerves. Oddly, later he preffered some of the heavy metal I listened to because he noted elements of classical music in it. Nearly made me not want to listen to it 😄 I bought the Cataronia debut CD 3 times... Lost the first at school, then the second I managed to leave on a train 🙄
Hey Brian. Never considered getting rid of my vinyl, so didn’t try to duplicate them when I started buying CDs. I did buy a Little Feat CD duplicate for playing in the car, but it certainly didn’t sound as good as the vinyl, so that experiment ended. The CD vs. vinyl debate is boring so I won’t get into that. I don’t buy vinyl versions of my CDs because it takes away from buying music I don’t own, and I’m too cheap. Glad you didn’t get hit with that snow they got in Buffalo and the Muskokas. Cheers.
Sometimes, it pays to be cheap! My back is especially glad we didn't get the snow, but I sense that it is coming 😔
I sold almost all my CDs.
I considering doing that in the past, but I am happy that I didn't ...
But you are still s youngster. I don’t mean to sound morbid but when I pass away I don’t want to leave a bunch of stuff behind.
Youngster? Maybe this is the best comment I have received this week!
How unfortunate you are wearing a cap. Your hair is marvelous.
Ha ha! This is the best comment I've received this week!
All Along the Watchtower is a Dylan song? I thought it was a U2 song….😂😉 Cool topic. I went thru same dilemma when CDs hit. Don’t start buying stuff I have on vinyl or cassette on CDs. Which didn’t last. And then 10 yrs ago when I started buying vinyl again same train of thought: don’t start buying vinyl of what I have on CD. That went out the window pretty much day one. I think I first really heard Television was in a Ramones documentary. They played Venus and instantly I was like I gotta get that CD. I never really got into the Beatles. I respect them but never had much interest. I have maybe 3 of their CDs but never listen to them. Found them for 99¢ at Goodwill and just seemed silly to pass up. You should do vid on those 5 CDs you always used to take on road trips…
I am sure I will get some input with respect to the lack of Beatles in my collection! None of my friends through middle school and high school listened to the Beatles either. Even in University, there were not really a thing. I guess I just missed the boat. But, I really should have Sgt. Pepper on vinyl!
@ same here nobody i was hanging with was listening to the Beatles at that time either.
I've been wanting to get the Island Albums Collection for these three mid-70s albums but haven't done so yet. Your review for Fear has convinced me to do so quickly. Joel
Cool and thanks. I hope you enjoy it! 🙂
I just found your channel today with your review video of Paris 1919. You largely describe my own thoughts and feelings about this album. It's a quite good. Joel
Hi Joel, Thanks for the nice comment. I'm glad we agree!
Mixing it up and love it, that made all of us smile ✌🏼🎶
Awesome! 🙂
Looking forward to their next adventure! Very sweet...
Thanks, Ed. I am sure they will want a monetary advance on instalment #2.
@@EmbryonicRobot Your daughters wasted no time in hiring an agent to secure that monetary advance - good for them!
I think "Hit Somebody!" by Zevon is the best song about professional hockey. "Hockey" by Jane Siberry is the best song about being a kid playing hockey.
I think you may be right on both counts! 🙂
That’s excellent!
Thanks!! 🙂
This is brilliant!! Can we have more please?
I'll put some pressure on them! 🙂
I love the direction this channel is going in.
Looks like it will be a 100% kids' channel soon!
Cheers to you Brian! Many people are saying this might just be the best video you’ve ever done. I definitely need to check out these songs. Love the photo of you from your childhood in the 50’s too. This video shows the fun side Brian. Love it
The 50's! If I gave out awards for best comments, this one might win 🙂
awesome. brings me back to my youth. did the same thing when we first got a video camera. hope they continue….
It would be cool if they did more. They might need their own channel 🙂
That was fun. Very cool animation. When is the sequel?
I think they might demand an advance on proceeds if I asked for another episode!
@EmbryonicRobot You gotta give them what they want.
Love it! My grandson's are also huge fans of stop motion & creating their own. Bravo! 10 out of 10 stars for the kiddos!👍
Thanks, Mark! I hope they do more episodes 🙂
Hockey is one sport I am not interested at all even it is kind our national sport...or because it... I have only one song in mind and it is maybe not supporting the sport...
I assumed that all of Finland would be mad for hockey!
@EmbryonicRobot Maybe 90% are in hockey. Last just trying to survive winter season avoiding it.
It's cool that you pull out records to hold your place. Do you pull out the record before what you're listening or the one after? Great Clash album cover! Easily their worst record. "Combat Rock" was their last decent record. I wanna say one of those guys were in Big Audio Dynamite. Bob Dylan is hard with his records. Sometimes you get into a certain era of his. What did you think of The Cars record that came out in the teens? (Or is that the one?) Question: Is it irritating to you because you're a super-fan? Would it be irritating to someone who's unfamiliar with John Cale? Orwell's material isn't going away soon. Peace be with you my brother.
Usually, I pull the one before out ... I think! Yes, Mick Jones went to form BAD, which was a pretty good band, IMHO. I've never heard that Cars reunion album. Maybe I should. I have encountered people who really like that Cale record, and it confuses me. Maybe I am just wrong. Can that be? I often wonder if it is the only Cale record they know and if they heard more they would start to dislike that one. It's an interesting theory!
This is the best movie I've seen all year. Less records more stop animation 👍
Subscribers might say otherwise. It may be a coincidence, but my sub count took a hit after I posted this! But, thanks 🙂
@@EmbryonicRobot Those morons don't know art when they see it.
Excellent! Look forward to the further adventures. 😺
I feel like I may have to invest in the company to secure a future episode 🙂
@ 😹
Well that was a wonderful interlude! I’m eager to catch the next installment!
I hope that there is a next installment!
Nice video. Maybe some snowy adventures in the future.
That's a great idea. The kids are irritated that there is so much snow around us, but none has fallen here. On the other hand, I am delighted!
Adorable. Looking forward to further adventures!
Gee, now that you mention it, I wonder if there will be further adventures!
Fantastic use of stop-motion! Some budding Ray Harryhausens, for sure. A complete delight. Two thumbs up!
Thanks, Mark! (I had to look up that Ray guy, but don't tell anyone...) 🙂
@@EmbryonicRobot My lips are sealed!
👍🙂
Every bit as good as Pixar. 🙂
That's high praise! 🙂😁
Fun video Brian, although at the end during the credits, I was surprised that John Cale was not involved in this project.
Cale is too esoteric for the girls, I think. Also, I imagine that he would be too expensive for them! 😀
Excellent I watched it over and over 😊 paired well with my new RSD Tony Levin 😊
I might have to licence some Tony Levin music for future episodes!
...and a fine time was had by all who watched this cool little video.
👍 I'm happy you enjoyed it 🙂
I enjoyed hearing your vinyl adventures. Your description of Hamilton reminds of the lyrics to Slag Heap Love by The Polka Dogs. I really should listen to God Speed You, Black Emperor.
I think I remember the Polka Dogs, but maybe not that track... I should check!
What a great idea, Brian! I enjoyed the video. I've watched plenty of Amerks games at the Blue Cross Arena. The only thing that comes to mind is the band Five for Fighting. 🏒
Hi Mark, I've had a few interesting hockey song suggestions, but you are the first to mention that band I've never heard of. That is an authentic hockey name for a band 🙂
Great video! Love the topic and like you connected the songs to a great sport!
I'll resist doing a part two 🙂
Hockey songs! Love it!! Great choices. Another nice one is Kathleen Edwards’ Hockey Skates off Failer. Truth be told, hockey is more a metaphor in the song. Just saw her again recently in a small club here in Vancouver and she played Hockey Skates beautifully.
I did think of that Edward's song along with I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory. I've always loved her voice!
Hey Brian. I love this! You are hitting me right in the feels when you talk about flooding the backyard and playing pickup hockey with the neighbourhood kids. For me, my best friend had a ravine behind his house and there was enough ice there for us to skate around on. Great fun. I’m curious whether or not you have the Tragically Hip album World Container? They have another hockey song on that one called The Lonely End of the rink. I’m sure you are familiar with it. And I don’t get too many chances to correct you in your videos so I will take this opportunity- Wendel Clark was a Winger, not a Defenseman. Once again, excellent video! I don’t think I have any other hockey songs in my collection apart from the Hip ones you mentioned. Well done buddy and have a good weekend.
Hi Chris, You are right about Wendel. I have no idea why I said defenseman. Thanks for the correction! I do have World Container and that track mad the list, but I thought that was maybe too much Hip! 😀 Maybe there is no such thing as too much Hip 🙂
Hey Brian. Nice to see you grab some goodies. I really like PCV in Oakville. It's been a few years since I've been there. Had a couple VC meet ups there. I enjoy Godspeed You? Black Emperor. Still need to check out the new album. Cheers, Jeff
PCV has always been good to me. When I walked in, I wondered why it had taken me so long to get back there!
Nice Ants cover, l love Lloyd Cole too. First two Hamilton shops were a bit strange. Not very customer friendly. Some nice stuff bought Brian.
Thanks, Mike. I won't be going back to those shops! The good news is that I got some tips on some really great Hamilton shops for a future visit.
