And of course the one and only Stompin Tom the good ole hockey game!! I'd have to think about this for more, but thats off the top! Love this video Brian. Awesome. Cheers bud! 🍻✌️🤘🥅🏒🤘
Hockey songs! Love it!! Great choices. Another nice one is Kathleen Edwards’ Hockey Skates off Failer. Truth be told, hockey is more a metaphor in the song. Just saw her again recently in a small club here in Vancouver and she played Hockey Skates beautifully.
Cheers to you Brian! Many people are saying this might just be the best video you’ve ever done. I definitely need to check out these songs. Love the photo of you from your childhood in the 50’s too. This video shows the fun side Brian. Love it
“Sitting in my basement, as I always do”…I enjoyed the backyard rink story. I remember those well. That Rocket Richard song description was very cool. Duke Street label. Good stuff. “Somehow I remember the friend was a dentist”…I was never a devout Tragically Hip fan, but still can enjoy them when I hear it. You’ve sold me on that docuseries. I just added it to my watchlist. “Let’s get back to the music here”…Wendall Clark! Legendary character! 🇨🇦🏒
The Hip doc series might make you a fan! I think it made me more of a fan, if that makes sense. Maybe I need to make a backyard rink, though we don't really have enough space...
This was fun to watch, Brian! So, not sure if this counts at all, but one of my favorite Kathleen Edwards songs is 'I Make The Dough, You Get the Glory' which references Wayne Gretzky and Matt McSorley. If I remember, the music video may have a bit of a hockey theme, and I think they are in it. Also, a band from Connecticut that has been around for decades is 'The Zamboni's'. They wear full on hockey gear when performing, and all their songs are hockey themed. Everything from making the winning shot, and the classic 'Don't Date the Coach's Daughter', etc. I've seen them live a few times over the years. Tragically Hip would come to CT on occasion, but I never go the chance to see them, unfortunately. Jane Siberry and hockey - huh! Who knew? 😎
Hi Ed, I almost used that Kathleen Edwards song, but I only have the CD (It's Cecile's copy). Someone else mentioned the Zomboni's, but I had never heard of them! I did see the Hip several times. They were always entertaining 🙂 Siberry and hockey does seem like a weird combo.
I didn't think a video featuring songs about hockey could be interesting, but you did it! I see the two mystery songs have already been guessed, but I wanted to add, I Wanna Drive the Zamboni by the Gear Daddies to the list. Not really about hockey, but hockey adjacent. Great work, Brian!
Hi Mark, Someone else mentioned I Wanna Drive the Zamboni, but I have never heard it! I will have to. To be honest, I'd love to drive a Zamboni. I'm watching your live stream with GG right now 🙂
Hey Brian. I love this! You are hitting me right in the feels when you talk about flooding the backyard and playing pickup hockey with the neighbourhood kids. For me, my best friend had a ravine behind his house and there was enough ice there for us to skate around on. Great fun. I’m curious whether or not you have the Tragically Hip album World Container? They have another hockey song on that one called The Lonely End of the rink. I’m sure you are familiar with it. And I don’t get too many chances to correct you in your videos so I will take this opportunity- Wendel Clark was a Winger, not a Defenseman. Once again, excellent video! I don’t think I have any other hockey songs in my collection apart from the Hip ones you mentioned. Well done buddy and have a good weekend.
Hi Chris, You are right about Wendel. I have no idea why I said defenseman. Thanks for the correction! I do have World Container and that track mad the list, but I thought that was maybe too much Hip! 😀 Maybe there is no such thing as too much Hip 🙂
The last episode was certainly tough to watch, but it was very well done. I'm not sure I could watch it again 😞 It's essential viewing for music fans, I think.
Big Beaver! Saskatchewan. I've been there. Well, drove through it. Not far from Climax. Yeah, I know, eh? I was going to do a hockey song video a couple of years ago. Anvil has a song called All I Want for Christmas Is for the Leafs to Win the Cup. The Shuffle Demons do Hockey Night in Canada. Of course there's the Tragically Hip, but I don't have any albums of theirs with a hockey song. Moxy Fruvous mention playing hockey in a song. And there's one more I forget. Maybe Blue Rodeo mention hockey? That Warren Zevon song made me think of Tiger Williams. Until the end. Oh, right! Fifty Mission Cap! I have that one! And the Rheostatics. I have an album where they mention hockey. Cool to hear so much background information, Brian. It's all so familiar to me, the names and the history. It makes me feel really Canadian to hear you talk about these songs.
Big Beaver is near Climax? OMG. I need to take a road trip! I should listen to that Anvil song. Shuffle Demons - yes, classic. I wish I had it. Moxy Fruvous also have a hockey song, but not the one I was thinking about. I don't know about Blue Rodeo. Mark from Twanger's Turntable got the two I was thinking about 👍 I'm just going to map out my trip to Big Beaver and now ...
@@EmbryonicRobot Actually, I visited Bryan Trottier's hometown back in 1993. I think it was Val Marie. I was going to Eastend to drive by the home of Wallace Stegner (not a hockey player but an American historian who lived in Saskatchewan for a few years).

Hey Brian. Interesting theme, I didn't know there were any songs about hockey. What I know about hockey you could write on a postage stamp. I'm not sure if it's different these days but back in the eighties when I was at school, hockey in the UK was largely if not exclusively an all-female sport (at least that seemed to be the case in Wales where I grew up). Interesting bunch of showings. 🏑
Growing up in rural Ontario, it was all hockey all winter (and into June, believe it or not). Too bad the Toronto Maple leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1967. I feel it will never happen in my lifetime 😔
Mitch Albom - Didn't he write 'Tuesdays with Morrie'? Best selling author, if it's the same guy. Both national sports require gum shields then - Canadians must truly be a rough bunch.
I just looked it up, and you are right about Mitch Albom. I have never read it. Oh, yes, we are a rough/tough bunch 🙂 BTW, the Hockey Hall of Fame is in Toronto!
I think "Hit Somebody!" by Zevon is the best song about professional hockey. "Hockey" by Jane Siberry is the best song about being a kid playing hockey.
You overlooked an important detail regarding the Zevon track - David Letterman provides backing vocals. Another related tidbit - Dave Hodge was / is a very serious indie rock fan. Yet another tangent - the rather obscure single, The Ballad of Team Canada by Jerry Dallas.
The Warren Zevon song was the first one I thought about with David Letterman providing the "Hit Somebody" phrase. I had one of those All Star Hockey Games made by Cadaco as a kid and I was always the Toronto Maple Leafs for some reason. I hope that I am not the one who jinxed them. I was wondering if one of the songs you were thinking about is "Zamboni" by The Gear Daddies which I have on CD.
I forgot to mention David Letterman 😔 I had some sort of table top hockey game, but I can't remember the teams! You are the second person to mention the The Gear Daddies and I have never eve heard that song (yet)!
