I thought at first that you got one of those high quality condenser mics.. It's a cold ! Haha☺I'll never forget when I had dinner with Martin Barre.. He was inquisitive and envious of.. Richard Thompson ! It was back in '98 and Martin wanted to know what was the big deal from my opinion. I saw Elvis Costello here in town back in 2002. It was a bit of a slow start, and then he caught a gear and was on fire ! What an amazing show. My next record purchase really should be The National "Boxer" .. Terrific album !
Good afternoon Brian, wow, thank you so much for the love in the intro, genuinely felt!!! Great great entry for the contest, amazing picks, so I knew some didn’t which is always fun. Richard Thompson one was perfect, Elvis, Bruce, Neil, perfect, thanks for participating 😎🎶✌🏼
I could never grow a beard, I tried a mustache but my hair was just too lite so you never noticed it. Interesting contest. Cold has gone through my whole family also, seems a little early to have that already
Here in Australia we have, or had and soon will have again, a band called The Beards. They sang only songs about beards, beard related lifestyle issues or beard accessories. Every song ended with the word "beards". Their huge hits included "If Your Dad Doesn't Have A Beard, You've Got Two Mums", "A Wizard Needs A Beard" and "You Should Consider Having Sex with a Bearded Man" and their album "Having a Beard is The New Not Having A Beard" is a beard related classic. I joined them on stage in 2013(?) to perform their closer "There's Really Nothing Better Than A Beard" and my son and I travelled 600 or more mile or so see their final ever gig in Sydney, what, 2016? But they are getting back together again for concerts early next year. Now there is commitment to THE BEARD!
The Batman voice works for you! When I was in high school, my 5 year old nephew went into my room and got hold of my Tonight's the Night album. He took an orange marker and colored in all the faces, front and back. The rage I had to contain that day was enormous.
Batman voice! Now that you put it that way, I am happy to be ill. I suppose you no longer hav that copy of Tonight's the Night, which is s shame. It would be cool to see. I experienced some rage over having lost some records in university residence. I learned my lesson quickly about loaning records or taking records to a party!
Hey Brian, cool idea for a contest. I’m don’t know the Vinyl Lounge , but I do like vinyl thrifting videos, so will check him out. I’m not quite sure if I’ve many beardy album covers, but I’ll give it a go. Nice entry… love Tonight’s The Night… probably my favourite NY album. Cheers, Jack
Hey Brian this sounds like a cool contest! The Richard Thompson album.... I'm not sure what to make of it. The juggler a guy shaving and the fighter jets don't all seem to go together. Maybe the jester is how we all see ourselves going through life and we're just clowns for the amusement of those who run the world. Thanks for the shoutout and hope you feel better! Cool album covers!
Totally agree regarding the Costello album cover. Always liked that one. I have that Father John Misty record on cassette! I never noticed Neil had a beard on that cover either. Great album. I'll check out rallstonianmusicremort. Good luck in the contest!
Splendid entry Brian. I was a bit unsure wether I should do this, in part because a couple of records I would love to have shown had allready been so, but then I saw your video and it spurred me to see what I could come up with. In the end I had to leave several out, I think I had like 19 records before I thought, "wait, did he say 10?!?" Enjoyed your video, wishing you a speedy recovery from that bug. Cheers from Morten
Love that Richard Thompson album and one that I wouldn't have remembered as a beard cover. I really love that Elvis Costello album as well and that Bruce Cockburn is one that I haven't picked up yet. I have that Bob Mould album and several others as well as Sugar but for some reason, no Husker Du. Great contest entry.
No Husker Du? Oh well. I realized when I made the video that I have not listened to the Richard Thompson record is. long time, so I might do that today 🙂
Good stuff! Seen Elvis Costello a number of times, and caught FJM live last year. Getting my entry out there as well, with a few changes now that I've seen yours, Brian. 😎 I would have gotten it done sooner, but my free time has been spent catching up with friends out of state, and watching this multi episode series on John Cale I stumbled across. You should check it out - the guy really knows his stuff! 😎🎶
Ha ha. Those damned Cale videos do take up some time! I am looking forward to watching your thread response 🙂 I have never seen Costello, which is stupid of me. . .
@EmbryonicRobot I just set aside my ten Hippie to Hipster Contest selections this evening for my video as I watched Vinyl Shawn's entry. Multitasking! 😎 Costello still tours, right? I don't think he's given that up yet. Two more Cale's left...
Solid contest entry. I am also dealing with some sort of cold and it's been lingering. Yup that Richard Thompson album makes zero sense. 🙂And King of America I will have to avoid if I enter this contest....great cover and back cover as well.
If I grow a beard it looks like a calico cat died on my face. Gray here, brown over there, blonde and black. Like a dismal rainbow colored cotton candy accident. I just keep the eyebrows. Everything else above the shoulders gets shaved. Great records btw! Nice entry.
@@EmbryonicRobot I can relate. My last attempt at facial hair was a completely white goatee. I don’t want to know what the rest looks like now if I grew it out. Probably white as well…but these are the over the half century years for me so…
When I was young, I got sick. In the middle, not so much. Once I had kids, I get sick again. 😅 Beard time my guy! You would look like Steve Martin grabbing that chin moss like an old Shaolin monk. Bob Mould has some sweet songs. Ooooooooooohhh . . . Marvin Gaye! Bruce Coburn is an amazing guitar player. Boston is an awesome town. Their science museum is one of the best in this country. And I hope you like the smell of fish. Cheers and keep growin' in the free world!
I shaved the beard off. I am not 100% convinced that the other people in my house appreciate it 🧔 But, since I am lazy, it sometimes grows back. I did head down to the Boston harbour and noticed a very sea-like aroma. I did not eat any fish there, though. I did on a previous excursion: it tasted like fish 🐟
“Hello everybody, it’s Brian here in Toronto as usual”…”You may have already detected that I’m dealing with some sort of respiratory virus”…”I’ve been feeling lethargic”…”His contest is focused on beards, but I don’t have one”…,I’ve never really listened to Bob Mould beyond Sugar. Maybe I should give it a try. Neil! 😉🇨🇦🎸
Bob has a steady stream of consistently great solo records. Some may say they tend to sound the same, but I really like them. (I'm coughing now, which really sucks).
HP sounding sexy with those Barry White tones. You can't tell us you had a beard and then refuse to supply some evidence. The other Elvis & Billy....noice! Bob Mould actually looks better with a beard I think. What a champ! Actually your illness makes me think you could sing some National quite well with that voice. You didn't know NY had a beard? What did you think was on his face? 😂Cheers...Ben
But Barry White could sing in tune! But, maybe I could do The National karaoke style. It's weird, but I really didn't look too closely at Neil's face. And now, I wonder why...
Yep you sound quite gruff today, for sure. With a voice like that, you could be a DJ. Hope you get better soon. It makes me wonder if he's trying to depict amnesia with some guy being very confused about his memories (depicted by what's in the mirror). Just a guess, I haven't really seen that cover before I guess. Great bearded choices there, I'm sure I can throw together an entry for this one. I found a couple of Father John Misty's albums yesterday, but I felt (at least for now) that they were maybe a bit overpriced for as used as they were.
Hi Mike - Maybe I need to find a way to keep this voice so that I can get a second job as a DJ. Your explanation of the Thompson album cover is the best I have heard so far. But, maybe I need to find out who was responsible and ask the question, if possible. Some records have clearly been loved a little too strongly!
@@EmbryonicRobot Something I realized just now. I was going through some records to show some bearded wonders, and I thought I would show some of Jim James of MMJ, but none of their studio albums or his solo albums that I have show any pictures of the band. Weird.
That is really weird, but I do remember that this release: My Morning Jacket - Live From RCA Studio A (Jim James Acoustic) - has Jim on the cover with a beard. I only remembered because i have it 🙂
@@EmbryonicRobot Hmmm I don't have that one but I do know he appears on some of the rare or live recordings which I don't have. Can I borrow it for my entry lol
Your cold makes you sound more manly. I think you should keep it. I love Richard Thompson! Oh wait…I was thinking of Hunter Thompson. Richard Thompson sounds like an actor from The Waltons. I bet that’s a kick ass record. Bruce Cockburn is a better guitarist than Alex Lifeson? Come on Brian, Bruce doesn’t even know how to correctly pronounce his last name. Now there’s Neil Young. I like him. And of course, I like you. Good luck in Olivier’s hairy contest.
More manly, you say! How can that be? I was plenty manly enough already. There's a famous quote from Eddie Van Halen, when he was asked what it's like being the best guitarist in the world. He said, "I don't know; ask Bruce Cockburn." Sure, Alex is great, but for finesse and complex fingerpicking, I'd choose Bruce! Of course, I love Rush, like all good Canadians. If I win this contest, I may have to grow a beard, which could make me look more manly.
@@EmbryonicRobot That quote from EVH has been debunked and falls under the title “Canadian Tall Tales”. To be fair the same type of rumor was used with Jimi Hendrix saying that “(Fill in the blank) was his favorite guitarist, or the best…”. Oh and Rod Stewart never had to go to the hospital to have a gallon of (you know what) pumped from his stomach either. But they do make for interesting stories.
Yeah, I heard that quote was debunked, but I still want to believe it! But, from a technical perspective, I do think Bruce is a better guitarist. Well, I should say he *was* a better guitarist, because arthritis has prevented him from playing certain older songs. Speaking of Hendrix, he really did like Robert Fripp. Fripp has said that Hendrix shook Fripp's left hand because it was closer to his heart. (apparently, his right hand was in a sling, but the closer to his heart thing is interesting). There's even a clip of Fripp recounting that meeting on RUclips. I first heard the Rod Stewart story when I was a kid, but I was never sure what to make of it. It didn't sound authentic even then. . .

I'll probably never bring a beard back. I was never sure that it suited me, but maybe a grey beard will make me look wiser than I really am!
Sounding like Leonard Cohen there mate😁
Cohen once said that his voice was deepened by smoking thousands of cigarettes. I suppose that's one way to do it!
Strange coincidence, I've spun Midnight Love twice this week, having not heard it for years.
