ive never listened to that clash album. never had any desire to after hearing all the horror stories. Ben Orr is the dude missing from Cars reunion. He passed away. I find that Cars album OK but it def felt like a contractual obligation. hey at least you liked a few album covers brian.
Stranglers were really up and down to me, loved their early stuff but then I moved on. I have never brought Cut The Crap into the collection. That last work of the title says it all lol.
Hi Brian....I have always found turkey hard to digest...I won"t be gobbling any of these unappetizing turkeys any time soon....gobble.gobble....but a Grand Finale to your vid with a mention of Eric Blair/George Orwell......my favourite books of his are Down and Out in London and Paris / The Road to Wigan Pier and Homage to Catalonia!
Dylan's 80's period can be tough sledding, but on occasion a gem of a song pops out. There are some obvious turkeys out there, but fun when us listeners and fans disagree! 😎🎶
I've always wondered what Bob was doing in the 80s, though I do love some of his albums from that time. I suppose every band has a turkey or two, even if it's just a song 🙂
I agree about the Stranglers 10. I had picked it up in a dollar bin a while ago; listened to it again recently or at least some if it - went straight into the sell or donate pile.
Fun responses, Brian. You know, I've never even been tempted to listen to Cut the Crap by the "Clash." This video reaffirms my suspicions! For me, one record stands out above all others. I love Lou Reed, but Metal Machine Music is where I drew the line.
That's quite a collection of turkeys! I watched one other video for this thread. I can think of a few albums I never feel like listening to by bands I love. But I also have a couple of favourites that many people rank lowest. So yeah, to each his own, eh?
Great video and this is a great idea! Now I have to refocus and do my turkey video for my channel. I agree with you on these choices. That Clash album should just be called Crap lol. I do love Billy Bragg as well and I agree the album does fall short. Love the rest of his catalog. That Cars album is a disappointing effort as well compared to their earlier albums. Great job on this video!
I'm a Stranglers fan and have been collecting their records for years, but I still haven't found a copy of 10 which I've not heard all the way through though I probably know individual tracks. There's a great story in the Clash biography 'Passion is a Fashion' about two of the guys from the 'Cut the Crap' line-up accidentally ending up in the same pub one night - they caught each other's eye from across the room and decided not to acknowledge the other's presence. For me Roy Thomas Baker is always Queen before he's The Cars. That said, the reason they got him back to produce 'Jazz' in '78 was because they'd liked his work on The Cars' debut. I don't mind Caribbean Sunset...you've got me wondering now so I'll give it a spin and report back!
Hi James, That's a funny story from the Clash book. I can imagine. Right, Roy Thomas Baker before the Cars. I think I was familiar with the Cars debut I had ever heard the Queen records he produced. It's interesting that they brought him back after hearing The Cars. I have been wrong about many things, and maybe I am wrong about Caribbean Sunset. I am curious to hear you report!
After all these years, I still don't have a copy of 'Cut The Crap', despite seeing the band do their 'busking' set around the same time (and, obviously, with the new 'no name' members). If I came across a cheap copy, I'd definitely buy it (to satisfy my completist tendencies). Yet to find one though.
Interesting response to this thread. I think you're right - Dylan probably has several records that could be chosen; each one of those will have staunch supporters - "that's my favorite Dylan record!" lol That's a great cover on the Stranglers record. I'll check out Sam's video. Rock on Brian!
Brian, good video. I thought that I was going to be spared owning any of these turkeys based on the first half of the video, but the come the Cars and John Cale. I will be anxiously awaiting the pertinent, upcoming John Cale episode. Maybe by then I will replay Caribbean Sunset. I don't have a lot of Billy Bragg, so I thought that I would be safe, but no I have the CD. My first response to this topic is usually Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy. Most of the album is pretty good, but the middle section with the Crunge and D'yer Mak'er just really annoy me. Thanks, Chris
Hi Chris, Well, you may disagree with me on some of these, like Bragg and Cale! As for Houses of the Holy, for years it was my favourite LZ record 🙂 I really liked D'yer Mak'er when I heard it first ( I was very very young) and I like The Crunge even to this day. That's weird, I guess!
Death is Not the End, Silvio and Shenandoah aren't bad at all on that Dylan record, though it's not one I reach for much. Thanks for doing this thread Brian!
You took two of the first ones that came to my mind in Cut The Crap and Dylan's Down In The Groove. I have that Stranglers record but I guess that I like it more than you. Sam took the other one I thought about in Van Morrison's What's It Gonna Take. I'm having a hard time thinking of ones to include in this thread. Interesting for John Cale to make your list. Cheers.
I am happy that I didn't buy What's It Gonna Take after hearing Sam discuss it a couple of times. As for John Cale, well, it was a tough decision to include him!
Hi Brian, This is England, if the whole album had been like that... I think La Folie was the album that killed the Stranglers for me. Great critique of the rest. I don't think l'll try any of them after this.
I don't own that Clash album, and I'm okay with that. The same goes for the Stranglers album. I suppose there's a reason I haven't added those releases. It's an interesting thread.
It's cool that you pull out records to hold your place. Do you pull out the record before what you're listening or the one after? Great Clash album cover! Easily their worst record. "Combat Rock" was their last decent record. I wanna say one of those guys were in Big Audio Dynamite. Bob Dylan is hard with his records. Sometimes you get into a certain era of his. What did you think of The Cars record that came out in the teens? (Or is that the one?) Question: Is it irritating to you because you're a super-fan? Would it be irritating to someone who's unfamiliar with John Cale? Orwell's material isn't going away soon. Peace be with you my brother.
Usually, I pull the one before out ... I think! Yes, Mick Jones went to form BAD, which was a pretty good band, IMHO. I've never heard that Cars reunion album. Maybe I should. I have encountered people who really like that Cale record, and it confuses me. Maybe I am just wrong. Can that be? I often wonder if it is the only Cale record they know and if they heard more they would start to dislike that one. It's an interesting theory!
The question is, why do we own any of these sub-par and sometimes awful albums from bands that we otherwise love. Because we're collectors and The Clash is just one of those bands where you just have to own everything by them. I'm far from having all of their albums, but I would buy anything from them at the right price, which varies by album of course. I've never heard that Bob Dylan album, but again, if I saw it, I would still get it because....well....it's Dylan. Plus now, you have me curious. I agree about that Cars album, definitely not one that I was very fond of, and I doubt I'll ever pick that one up again. I had it originally on CD and played it maybe twice and left it to collect dust after that. I haven't heard that John Cale album, so I'll take your word on that one. Don't know that Billy Bragg album either.
I am, of course, a completist, so I own things I do not like! I ask myself why I don't sell them. Ah, yes, the completist in me. It can be irritating 😠
Hey Brian- I’ve actually never heard of Clash’s Cut the Crap 😲 (guess I’m not missing much!); That Cars album certainly is ‘meh’; I considered including a Numan album (clue: released in ‘92), but probably only 2 or 3 VC folk would’ve even heard of it 🤔 I’m rather enjoying this thread!! Cheers-R
Yep all filler and no killer. I give thanks to your existence HP as we don't celebrate thanksgiving here. It's ironic that it was called Cut The Crap. I only know the first two Stranglers records and the singles on a comp I have. Wiggle Wiggle off Under The Red Sky is another Bob lowlight. Wouldn't it be great if John Cale Comes Alive was an entire cover of Frampton Come Alive. Maybe not. On a side note, I just got the Cale Paris 1919 Deluxe Set & Academy In Peril. Looking forward to getting into those.
You need more Stranglers! Seriously. Wiggle Wiggle sucks so badly. Man, what was he thinking? Cale covering Frampton? He should do it! I'd pay to see it. I picked up the Deluxe Paris 1919, but not Academy in Peril yet. My local didn't get it, so I have to go father afield.
I have purged most of the turds(turkeys). I still have Cut The Crap because of This Is England. Though I do have the 12”. I’ve only heard the first two Cars albums. I didn’t like the singles that came out after the first two albums. The Bob Dylan turkey is Self Portrait. Purged. What no Metal Machine Music. Maybe you showed that on the livestream.
Clearly, I should purge a few turkeys, especially since I am running out of shelf space. I have never owned Metal Machine Music on LP. I'd probably keep it if I had it, just because it's Lou! 🙂
“People like different things”…”The only band that matters”…it is crap. I contend that you and I as college house mates would’ve made for the best reality TV. “I don’t know why I own this record, but I do”…Excellent Stranglers analysis. “Beyond that, I found this record dull”…Door to Door sucks. “One of my friends had this record”…”There’s something about the sound or production that bothers me”…” an ugly album cover”…Everyone is waiting for part 11! Do it! “Something about every song that’s irritating”…✌️
Mike, If they invent a time machine, I know what I am doing. Or, we should make a show when we are retired. It would be a big hit! It would have to be unscripted, of course.

Stranglers were really up and down to me, loved their early stuff but then I moved on. I have never brought Cut The Crap into the collection. That last work of the title says it all lol.
If you ever see Cut the Crap in the bins, just leave it there! It still has its proponents, for some odd reason 🤔
