This Watch, That Watch

My channel cuts through the marketing and gives a straight forward no-nonsense take on watches and everything watch world related.
I can never tell you what you should buy or if something is worth it - to you. The only way you'll know is by trying out the watch yourself.
I’m a passionate, non-expert watch lover. I know what I like, and what I don’t. I compare watches. I don't believe it's a given that the expensive watch is automatically the better watch. I don't buy into hype and I try to see through the marketing BS.
I spend way to much time obsessing and thinking about watches. Hopefully you’ll find value in watching and hearing my perspective on watches and everything watch world related.
So. Let’s talk about this watch and that watch!

Rolex is an overrated watch period 😢
What a cool classy hobby, & a cool classy man u are Mike.
Love that he said that watch nerds would go for the first omega in space rather than the professional 😊!
Never before have I heard the concept of someone using a paddleboard as a flex.... buy a watch because of how it makes you feel. Not with anyone else in mind! If you want to show off, get a new paddleboard.
Hi bud, what's your thoughts on Squale?
Do you have an alternate suggestion for a Black Bay Bronze Bucherer Blue? Particularly the combo of the bronze and blue.
I am not a watch guy, but i find it interesting., my hats off to you for reviewing my brand ,CASIO in the same light as ones that are 2,3,10 100 times as expensive. You have validated my choice of a data bank casio 25 years ago that still keeps time being worn EVERY DAY!!! keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍
4700 dollars!? Fears should PAY people to buy their watches!
Was debating heavily, but Tudor screams more “of the people for the people” and as a rugby player it certainly hit close to home
Common misconception; moonphase if hood for tacking your wife’s menstrual cycle
For many decades I wanted an IWC (real )Big Pilot, the Heritage model, because at the time as I still lived in Schaffhausen I could not afford one. Now even though this model is practically discontinued, and not easy to get, I just got one and love it. What does this tell about me? Maybe only that I have the wrist size for it?
thnx for posting
On the 3 factors I think the differentiation one is the only one that imho makes little sense, if you buy a Rolex to differentiate from the watch nerds that are hating on Rolex you are taking the most common choice, you can be edgy by being mainstream (and the fashion world knows this well)
My last watch was a U-Boat Dark Moon. I saw on trip to Florence Italy. Instantly I was taken by the look of it. I like watches that are out of the ordinary and the Dark Moon was that watch for me.
True watch nerds know the W217H is the better Casio F91W
1:20 which watch is it?
I bought a Pagani off a guy in a pub for £3000 and it’s lovely. 😊
Never believe a corporation. Why would they be honest about their profits?
I have had my eye on the Santos-Dumont for years. Really think it may be my next watch - that or a Glasshute Original.
Def best watch channel! Thank you sir.
Buying watches thinking about "value" is ridiculous. Just buy whatever you enjoy using, folks.
I am absolutely no watch hobbyist, I watch this channel because it is a good marketing channel.
I recently just developed an interest for watches, just an interest, and I also found my way on a tiktok saying luxury watches are overpriced. I wanted to see how much truth there was in that statement and I found this video while looking for an answer. I have to admit I really did believe watches cost a lot less to make than they are sold, but I never even considered manufacturing costs. The actual profit margin is definitely smaller than I thought. But the most fascinating thing that I have come to realize after watching this very educational video was that my interest in watches matches my personality, I am not rich and I will never be, but even if I did have the money I would never spend that absurd amount of money to buy something like a Rolex or Patek Philippe. I'm not criticizing anyone who does, it's just not something I would do. The true value of a watch for me, is revealed with how good it looks, it feels and how long it lasts compared to how cheap it is. And as someone who lives in Paraguay, not the richest country on the planet, the irruption of the chinese offering very good looking watches in all format at a very, very attractive price is winning me over. I already own a Xiaomi Redmi Note and I am slowly switching to an entire chinese ecosystem. We don't even have diplomatic relationships with China, we support Taiwan as a nation. So my contribution to this very interesting conversation about the stagnated growth of the watch industry is, if China really wants to, won't they start getting serious offering better watches than most other countries that up 3, 4x the price for manufacturing costs? The chinese after all, plan for decades. The whole landscape of the industry could be very different in 10, 20 years. As someone who does not particularly support any brand, the nameless, cheap good looking strategy is starting to win me over. What if this is just the beginning. I was genuinely surprised to see that there isn't that much profit for some companies and not even much R&D. Very interesting to see. Also shoutout to Casio as well. I support both Anime & Communism
Understated elegance (fairly safe to wear in a city), timeless design, high quality, at sensible money = 18k version, 50's & 60's Omega Constellation. Vacheron similarly discrete. Both brands properly maintained can last & be passed on for generations...
What’s the watch brand at 3:00 time stamp
Your Flieger story reminds me of my situation now and why I am trying to be restrained. I soooo want a IWC-BP43 snd I know I will not be able to afford it for at least the next 2 years. So I am itching for a Stowa with the excuse that it can become a daily beater and a watch I can wear is sketchy places even when I own the BP43 later on. My other side of the brain says “you know you won’t give it a second look once you get that BP43”. I need to apply some discipline. Note: btw that Sinn 910 white dial Chrono with the honey brown semi gloss leather strap. OMG pure chronograph porn!!! 😢I would take it over a Navtimer any day.
Of course the price is wildly above the cost to produce, even with marketing and sales. It comes down to conspicuous consumption, you can't reason about the value of people seeing a luxury watch on your wrist.
@This Watch, That Watch, Kindly review Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 please.
I got the call, I told them to give it to someone else. I have had 3 Rolex's, all before the ridiculous hype took over. There's lots of great alternatives to Rolex, many, if not most, are a far better value. But, they're not a Rolex. I "get" that some want a Rolex. JLC, Zenith, etc are a better watch all around than Rolex, but none are Rolex. We have to give Rolex credit where it's due, they have done a great job of market positioning.
👍
Tudor Pelagos LHD, got it a little over a month ago. I needed something I could wear at work, without caring about if I scratched it, or smacked it on something, I live near Seattle, so it rains a lot, but I also live about 5 minutes from the ocean, so if I was going to spend a day on the water, I want zero worry about water. Also finding a lefty watch seems to be rather hard from one of the nicer brands. My dad however will still flex his Two-Tone Blue Sub and say I got the poor man's Rolex and then laugh a little. (I know he's a tad jealous my watch has a deeper water resistance, lol).
One problem I have is that at some point I need to service the watch and Im pretty sure tudor/omega wont go through the trouble of ensuring those specs for the price of a service
The Monta Noble.
Excellent depth and analysis!
Seiko SARX115 for a titanium dress watch
I like your videos! I really liked your treatment of the field watches. Seiko makes a good one too called the Alpinist. Their inspiration was very good at least. :) I’d put it just under the some of the higher Hamilton Khaki watches. I personally moved from a Rolex Explorer 2 ( old red GMT hand model ) with black dial to a higher end Hamilton Khaki Date mechanical automatic. The Rolex just felt like a bit too much. And I was able to get a very good price for it so I sold it. Do sometimes miss some aspects about it but I’m pretty happy with the much cheaper watch I now have. That said my next watch will definitely be a higher end Swiss Chronometer. Best, Greg
How about a two-tone sub as a one-and-done? I'm an attorney, but I never (well... almost never) make court appearances or even wear shirts with collars as I have a very niche advisory practice. I'm also considering a Datejust 1630 Rare Bird if my two-tone itch persists.
Just the overall idea that our watches say something about us….makes me not want to wear one at all🙁
You sound like a Ted-Ed documentary voice over. Perfect bass in the sound.
Good to have them compromise in advertising and other overheads, and in margins. Which of the better brands do this?
Great Watch channel. I really like your breakdown of watches. I recently bought a Bremont S301 Supermarine 40mm Diver watch with metal bracelet with old logo. I really really love it. As starting Watch collector I only began very recently. My original watch I had absolute years was a Tag Heuer F1 2000 from 1990 which was good for everyday watch . My next serious buy will be Omega Seamaster 42mm white face with metal bracelet and black rubber strap option . You either love or hate Rolex watches, so true I hate Rolex . There’s so many good quality watches out there as good for less money . When I was 13 I was given Blancpain 38mm dress watch probably of 1930s/40s vintage with leather strap in a Will . It did not work and strap was broken. I forgot totally about it as you do and left in my sock drawer . When we moved it was probably lost . Years later I looked back on it and wondered what a loss it probably was! At that young age you don’t appreciate the quality and prestige of a brand then .
Loving the Nomos lugs appreciation !
Fortunately I started looking more into microbrands from Thailand and China and seeing how they finish their watches and the movements they use, it is impressive what they can make. If the finish, tolerances, details and design, movement functions and even accuracy is very close to "luxury" brands or even on par, I really don't see the point of paying more. You'll find plenty of watches that run within chronometer in daily use regardless of how cheap they are, and even if it runs bad you can just regulate it. For me watches are toys, I hardly find people around me willing to spend even $100 on a watch, in their words it is "too expensive", so as far as I'm concerned luxury watches don't have to cost much, they just have to have high quality and design.
I'm starting to mostly care about tangible quality to price, like the finish of the watch and movement features, although style is also important. Everything else I pay attention to less since I noticed quality watches tend to have a brand following even if they don't have much history. People tend to look to the past so much they forget to help brands of today build their future.
Thank you for advise. I just love watch and recently I just happy with my gshock seiko tissot longines before I want to save money for higher watch but after hearing you. I just use my watch just the way I like and not take the train to go luxury watch
So simple. Just pick up the one they all try to copy, the Hamilton Khaki, with the ETA movement, and if you have to trick it out, change the watchband. The watch is hard to do better with money or glitz. And it just works. Like Seiko? Then get their knockoff, the SPRG 35. Not need to go thousands of dollars and get the same look, the same function.
I’m waiting on a Sinn U50
Really insightful...not just on the watch industry, but into marketing as a whole. Well done.
