I freaking LOVE the Railmaster, it's so attractive and understated. From far away the dials on all the different colors look simple, but once you have one on your wrist, the ways that brushed texture changes the color and look of the dial as the light changes is amazing.
Great stuff again. Some interesting choices too. Coincidentally I was just in a Rolex AD yesterday to "register my interest" in the Explorer. Something I've always wanted and just needed to get the wife's approval. She was like wait, I thought you were getting it, then I had to sit her down and have the talk. I explained to her all i'm doing is hoping they call me before the undertaker does. She was so confused. Either way, they were actually very nice, way better than I expected. The gentleman was older and we just started talking watches. it was an hour before closing and the other people were very helpful as well. I wasn't even dressed nice so I thought I was going to get the cold shoulder. So my name is on the list....we'll see where that gets me.
LOL I’m imagining you explaining this whole mess to your wife. BTW I “registered my interest” for a DateJust almost 3 months ago. The salesperson was cool and told me he loves watch enthusiasts. Maybe that is a good sign but no call yet, LOL.
The quality of the datejust is head and shoulders over the santos... I mean, the reliability of those santos and waterproofing is very very suspect imo.
Thank you for this… probably the most original take of this type of video I’ve seen in years! Your attention to detail, that star lights on the ceiling of the car… spot on! Too many watch homage type videos but you’ve taken it to that deeper level, the intention, the statement, great alternatives !! Am a Rolex fanboy, but have added a few more to my wish list from this. ‘I have arrived a long time ago….’
I hate the Rolex image but like some of the models. That's why I never considered buying a submariner, a model that I like for his "simplicity". Now that I dived deeper over the years into the watch topic I rate Rolex higher but I can't get over this damn poser image that Rolex has. I would either throw my money at IWC and buy a premium and overpriced Top Gun 41 or ofc would buy the SeaQ before I would get a sub.
I absolutely love your reviews… I learn so much… I especially like the fact that you appreciate the Rolex, but you don’t fawn over them. There are wonderful alternatives. I especially appreciate my Seamaster and my Tudors… anyway… Thank You Steven✌🏾
Thank you very much for the excellent video! In my opinion, the problem is that Rolex watches are now traded like a currency on a stock exchange. This no longer has anything to do with being a watch connoisseur. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see when Rolex stops or at least reduces the waiting list game. People who can easily afford an expensive watch do no longer wait years for a Rolex, but buy what they like. It is precisely this target group that Rolex is now losing. In my opinion, a brand like Rolex also has to be careful that it does not degenerate into a brand for “consumer fools”. And let's be honest: in some circles, it has always been frowned upon to wear a Rolex and this thinking is now reaching other circles.
Over 30% of the market. No other brand even remotely comes close. I think they know what they’re doing. I bet if they could all the other big luxury brands would live to be in the position of Rolex.
I agree that the IWC Mark XX or earlier variants are an excellent alternative to the Explorer. If you want to spend less money, how about a Tudor Ranger? Want to spend money, how about a JLC Polaris? I agree on the GMT - Grand Seiko every time for me. If I ever win the lottery I’ll maybe get a VC Overseas Dual Time
That's a tough one. There are ball watches but I don't think they can really compete. I think a polaris memovox kind of conceptually works. A globemaster also has a certain something with the same toolish vibe and distinctive dial (but different) but none with the signature glass and lightning hand 😀
Excellent summary from an obviously very knowledgeable watch aficionado…. I had about twelve “serious” watches (£3,000+ each I mean) until recently….too much money tied up in watches that weren’t being worn. I’m down to four now; Rolex Sea Dweller James Cameron, Zenith Pilot Chronograph Annnual Calendar, Girard Perregaux Laureato Chronograph and Panerai Luminor. Four is still too many…. I want to keep the Girard Perregaux (gift from the missus) and swap the rest for a rose gold on Oysterflex Sky-Dweller….
I would say another great alternative to the rose gold yatchmaster is the newer GO SeaQ 39.5mm in rose gold on a rubber strap and has a display caseback. As the owner of a steel yatchmaster myself I think the GO is just better as a gold alternative. And as a 1908 alternative look for some old Moser Mayu (the small seconds endeavor). Yes they are hand wind but have far more interesting dials, amazing movement, and in most cases cost HALF of the 1908 asking prices. I actually got my platinum Mayu for less than 1/3 of the cost of what Rolex is asking for the platinum 1908.
Great choices. I’d add the Christopher Ward C63 GMT white dial as an Explorer II replacement. Save $8k. We can agree to disagree on your last pt about Rolex potentially going all precious metal. If they do it will blow up in their face spectacularly. Business schools will be studying it for decades.
To the previous replies, the word "alternative" does not mean "as good as". The CW C63 Sealander GMT is a similar watch with similar aesthetic. It IS an alternative. I bought one when I had the choice to own either. I own or have owned Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Breitling, JLC and others. The CW is pretty darn good. Next to my friend's Rolex Explorer 2 I can tell that I absolutely made the right choice.
The perfect alternative to the sky dweller is the omega constellation annual calendar. Doesn’t have a GMT but it has a jumping hour hand for quick time zone change
That note about when you made your last watch purchase is hilarious. It’s like those signs that tout how many days since the last incident. Great video again.
I love the explorer 2 but didn't want to buy another rolex because of the image problem. My version of this is SBGM245, the spring drive is a different (and better) watch. For the explorer 1, it's the SBGX061 which looks-wise is the better comparison (although watch-wise it's a quartz).
I'd prefer some value alternatives vs same or more expensive alternatives. I'm learning as I age status pieces mean less to me. Glycine, Certina and CW are good enough for me.
BTW you don't sacrifice WR with a Speedmaster Professional since Omega nowadays (officially!) claims, that their 50m actually do mean diving 50m with the watch without peril (similar to what Patek recently did with their 30m rating)!
I think the core strength of Rolex watches is that they are extremely well-rounded. There are no aspects that are not at least on a "very good" level. The dial and case finishing is not GS level, but still very adequate for the price. Rolex movements lack the artisinal touch of GO, but are extremely accurate, reliable and have a decent power reserve. The oyster bracelet is less complex and is lacking the superb quick adjastment of the IWC Mark XX's bracelet, but still is executed to a very high standard with very small tolerances, and easy link does its job quite well. Most (if not all) of the alternatives are falling short in something, which is a deal breaker for me. I. e. GS has a lot of room for improvement with their bracelets and cases' thickness (same as the Aquaterra), IWC Mark XX's movement is not that accurate, GO Seaq has a power reserve of only 40 hours, and so on.
Marques Brownlee (youtuber) has a cool video about his Porsche. He says "It's not a ten on anything". It's not the fastest (that's a bugatti). It's not the most comfortable (That's a bentley). It's not the most maneuvarable (that's a mclaren). But, he says... The Mclaren is a 3 on practicality. The bentley is a 4 on maneuvaribility. The others may be 10s on one thing but they all have a 2-3-4 on something. The Porsche is a solid 8 or 9 on everything. It's not the best on everything. But it's overall good at everything. To me I think that often fits well with Rolex. Nothing individually class leading, but zero real weaknesses. 😀
What a great video, It was my first time viewing one of your videos and it made me hit the subscribe button so well done! In the early 2000s I received some extra money so purchased a black bezel monotone GMT and the green crystal Milguass (it was a time when dealers would give you extras just to entice you to purchase one!). I have not worn them in years (probably should sell them). So many more interesting watches both in my collection and in the wild!
I agree completely on the Explorer II. If there's any Rolex to go for, that's the one, even though there's definitely a few more affordable alternatives from Grand Seiko or even Christopher Ward.
While I agree if you want a stunning 10k diver, the Glasshutte is a beautiful choice, the Tudor BB, which ive had side to side with a sub, it a worthy watch at under half, if you want a watch that looks like a sub
Nice video, thank you The one advantage of Rolex which perhaps isn’t discussed enough is this: -they have such critical mass and volume that i know if i leave my family a watch after i die, i know they can just get it serviced and wear it for another 80years Omega…not quite the same Patek- maybe as good but i can’t afford one and probably wouldn’t even i could Summary: Rolex has the best family heirloom safety which is a surprisingly big factor for me ( i’m 40 btw)
LOVE THIS. Spot on dialog. I do not know which watch I will buy yet but (I am to cheap) but I do like the other video you did of $1500 to $4000 watches. That maybe where I end up.
There isn’t an alternative to Rolex. If the buyer wants a Rolex they want a Rolex. This reminds me of when I ordered fish and chips at a beach restaurant in (i won’t say the country but the beach was Palma Rima) and after a 90min wait the guy brought cassava and chicken. Then proceeded to explain that they didn’t have potatoes or fish… and insisted I pay because I ordered it). These are all very fine watches but they are not alternatives to Rolex. I think it’s an insult to the brands and the good people who create these pieces. These watches are strong enough to stand on their own without the comparison to Rolex.
These are all valid suggestions, not a doubt. However, i'm not particularly fond of many "potential buyers" out there, who dislike what they can't get.
I really love your videos! Pls. more of them! And yes, I 100% agree on your alternatives, despite I dont like Grand Seiko as much as you do! I also quit with Rolex and sold all my Rolex watches. So now I am free for all the other marvels out there!
as an owner of the moonwatch and a daytona. I wouldn't take a speedmaster over ANY rolex in terms of quality, the moonwatch feels a solid level below an OP.
Wearing one now. Not an alternative to the Rolex Explorer in the "hey everyone look at me - I have so much money I like to spend it on overpriced luxury goods!" department, but take price and wealth flex out of the equation, and it's every bit as good. Actually for me it's the better watch. If I had the scenario where I had no watches, and was gifted either of them and not allowed to sell, I'd take the CW Sealander GMT. It wears so much better. My best friend has a Rolex Explorer 2 42mm and it wears horribly. Simply horrid. By comparison, the 39mm Sealander GMT wears like a dream.
@omonteso I've owned Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Breitling, JLC and others. That's extreme hyperbole and also incorrect to call the bracelet "shite". It's decent and works well. If they finished the clasp edges a little better, the bracelet would be of a similar standard to my Omega Planet Ocean.
Mike, I've been watching some of your videos lately. May I ask you a question, I like Grand Seiko's Dial but not the watch's design. Would you know if there's another brand (lower, mid or high level -doesn't matter-) which does this kind of dial in a Swiss design language?
So many beautiful watches presented here and yes, so many actually better in many ways. Beautifully presented video by a true pro. Keep up the great work.
Ditto! Well said. Although I think you missed the very obvious alternative to every single Rolex model, and that is their 5 digit used models, which are iconic in the same way modern rolexes are cartoonish, oversized, overbearing and overpriced. Granted, used watches will, depending on the model, fetch more than their current lineup, but more often than not the 5 digit models are just modern enough not to be too collectable, and therefore available freely, and mostly in steel!
I’ve never held one in my hand. But it’ll be a well built Swiss watch. They are on the pricier side though. And while the designs are ok, they’ve never spoken to me.
They’ve come a long way and now even have in house manufactured movements. Some of their chronograph model are really great looking watches other models don’t speak to me. Find them very pricey, not sure I’d spend that sort of money on that brand, also seem to lose loads of their value on the second hand market.
Not a big fan tbh. It's not my kind of aesthetic. I know historically they've had some acclaimed designs and they even win design awards on occasion but they are pricey for what you get (usually a Valjoux derivative movement). cheers 😀
Great video! A good follow up, would be the same but suggesting Micro Brands. Although the mentioned alternatives bring a very high level of quality like Rolex, and I understand that was the point… they are still out of the price range for many of us.. 😅
I'd love a video dedicated to the 1K - 4K range. You often describe it as being highly competitive and mention Longines and Christopher Ward as examples. Could you do a deep dive like this one for those of us interested in this price bracket? Bonus points if it includes examples for small wrists
Thanks for this. Although I quite don't agree with you proposal for the Explorer I. I like the IWC but it's 40mm wide - very different from the original 36mm Explorer. Speaking of alternatives, do you know March LA.B? You should have a look? Now they embed a Lajoux-Perret movement assembled in France, their products are quite worth it!
Okay, so the Parmigiani is nice ... but I don't think anything can quite scratch the itch that the Sky Dweller does unless it has a quickset date + GMT + annual calendar (all without annoying recessed pushers). I'd buy a Sky Dweller immediately if it were 38 or 40mm.
But at least for the other rediculous expensive watches you don't need to jump through hoops for the favour of being allowed to buy a watch from them and then wait for the call.
If someone was in the market for a Rolex to begin with but doesn’t want to put up with the headache, they’re probably not looking at the more affordable watches. He’s also made plenty of videos about much more affordable watches
I'm enjoying your videos, your insight, and your opinions. I'm also enjoying watching these out of order, seeing your This Many Days Since I Bought A Watch counter tick backwards. It's like some fancy European film!
This is excellent, thank you! With a fraction of your knowledge I’ve been doing similar research, and have a list of only a couple Rolex models, several Omegas, especially the Speedmaster white, and Breitling (which you didn’t mention.). I’m a private pilot and really like the Breitling line up, but they have a confusingly large number of models, so it’s difficult to compare and contrast. I’d be interested in your opinion on the Breitling vs. the Speedmaster, with the GMT still being a contender. I appreciate your expertise here very much, as well as the excellent production values of your videos. 👍
A waiting list for a company that produces 1,2 million watches per year is ridiculous! I own two Rolexes and i do appreciate them, but currently Rolex is almost a cliche.
Funny how everyone who moves to San Francisco claims that the city's heyday was ... whenever they moved there. Essentially the same thing with Rolex: 'My Rolexes are great, but get a load of these wankers buying them now ...'
I can get behind most of those alternatives. My favorite being the SeaQ as an alternative to the Submariner. Which is why a reed green SeaQ sits on my wrist as I type this.
At 0:25 - Or get a Tissot Gentleman Powermatic for 1/10th the price of an Omega Aquaterra from the same parent company, with great heritage, and a VERY similar look. The absolute best watch for under $1,000.
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch I’m curious, what would be 3 watches under $1,000 you think are better than a Tissot Gentleman? I’m not saying there aren’t any, I just can’t think of one 😂 PS: I think the PRX is nice, but the Gentleman is much nicer and more versatile.
As far as the Explorer II is concerned, a more “wallet friendly” option could be the CW63. Not the same GMT movement, nor on the same levels as GS movement, but much more affordable and a different dial style that in my opinion, is actually better than Rolex.

Yeah that comparison didn't really work for me either. Others did, but not that one.
For me there is no alternative to the Datejust. I'm not a Rolex fanboy, have more Omegas than Rolex. But I feel strongly about the DJ.
Fair enough. For me it's the aesthetics that they compete on. Cartier is rarely a winner when it comes to specs 😀
I especially appreciate my Seamaster and my Tudors… anyway…
Thank You
Steven✌🏾
An even closer alternative to the 1908 imo is the JLC small seconds. Super elegant!
Any not a Zenith defy or El primero for the Daytona?
El primero is definitely an option 😀
If I ever win the lottery I’ll maybe get a VC Overseas Dual Time
what's the alternative to the milgauss?
Thanks - Keep the GP for sure. Very cool watch 😃
None of the watches on this list are affordable for like 98% of people out there, but very nice alternatives either way.
Excellent blog...I will still continue to buy Rolex...but there are so many alternatives and I will leverage some of them...thx for sharing your views
Nah, that watch is an affordable homage, not an alternative.
I own a C63 dune GMT, and I love it, but it's an off the shelf movement and comes nowhere CLOSE to Rolex in any category
CW are good watches for the money, but not playing in the same league as the watches discussed.
@@paultuerena agreed
Thanks 😃😃😃😃❤️
I love these videos. No hype, transparent and honest opinions, and high production value. Keep these coming!
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
love the alternatives, especially the omega alternatives.
I love the explorer 2 but didn't want to buy another rolex because of the image problem. My version of this is SBGM245, the spring drive is a different (and better) watch. For the explorer 1, it's the SBGX061 which looks-wise is the better comparison (although watch-wise it's a quartz).
Completely agree with your take on the Quaranta, 6119G and the Vacheron dual time!
Hey Mike.
Best reviewer on channel atm.
Is that a Breton fisherman's shirt?
Please keep posting !
Stu
Yes it is 👍👍
Amabokoboko!
I have two of the watches named in this episode, the Santos and the Aqua Terra. Both of them are marvelous.
😀
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Agreed! 🤝
Thanks for the sub 😃😃
I agree completely on the Explorer II. If there's any Rolex to go for, that's the one, even though there's definitely a few more affordable alternatives from Grand Seiko or even Christopher Ward.
While I agree if you want a stunning 10k diver, the Glasshutte is a beautiful choice, the Tudor BB, which ive had side to side with a sub, it a worthy watch at under half, if you want a watch that looks like a sub
Yeah - I deliberately stayed away from Tudor for this video as they both are the same family 😀
Fantastic video Mike - your content is top notch and one of my favourite watch channel.
yay! thanks 😃
Nice video, thank you
The one advantage of Rolex which perhaps isn’t discussed enough is this:
-they have such critical mass and volume that i know if i leave my family a watch after i die, i know they can just get it serviced and wear it for another 80years
Omega…not quite the same
Patek- maybe as good but i can’t afford one and probably wouldn’t even i could
Summary: Rolex has the best family heirloom safety which is a surprisingly big factor for me ( i’m 40 btw)
Very well judged and argued. Well done sir.
thanks 😃
These are all valid suggestions, not a doubt. However, i'm not particularly fond of many "potential buyers" out there, who dislike what they can't get.
I really love your videos! Pls. more of them! And yes, I 100% agree on your alternatives, despite I dont like Grand Seiko as much as you do! I also quit with Rolex and sold all my Rolex watches. So now I am free for all the other marvels out there!
Cheers, thanks 😀
as an owner of the moonwatch and a daytona. I wouldn't take a speedmaster over ANY rolex in terms of quality, the moonwatch feels a solid level below an OP.
You mentioned owning an Air-King. How long did you have to wait for it? I actually like that watch as well.
Not sure if he bought it, or just acquired the taste for it
@@thegornah, good call. I thought he meant “I physically acquired it.”
I had to wait 3 weeks for mine.
Never owned it - I just like it quite a bit. Borrowed it from a friend for a while. It's quirky and therefore cool 😀
I absolutely LOVE the GS SBGE285!
And you're not wrong about the Cartier Santos...
Explorer 2 alternate the CW Sealander GMT
Meh. The dial and case are decent. The bracelet is shite. For the price- it’s ok. However, it’s no where near the league of Omega, Rolex, and IWC
@@omonteso it is also a fraction of the cost of all of those mentioned. I would not expect it to be in their league.
Looked at just now. It's a beauty!!
Mike, I've been watching some of your videos lately. May I ask you a question, I like Grand Seiko's Dial but not the watch's design. Would you know if there's another brand (lower, mid or high level -doesn't matter-) which does this kind of dial in a Swiss design language?
Check out adOrdain, JLC and Louis Erard to name a few. Moser are also good, but it's a very different price 😃
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch thanks Mike. I've checked those, Moser's dials are above and beyond!
All the brands you mentioned have Beautiful dials 👍🏼
So many beautiful watches presented here and yes, so many actually better in many ways.
Beautifully presented video by a true pro. Keep up the great work.
Ditto! Well said. Although I think you missed the very obvious alternative to every single Rolex model, and that is their 5 digit used models, which are iconic in the same way modern rolexes are cartoonish, oversized, overbearing and overpriced. Granted, used watches will, depending on the model, fetch more than their current lineup, but more often than not the 5 digit models are just modern enough not to be too collectable, and therefore available freely, and mostly in steel!
Yeah - I stuck to the current production models 😀
Well that was very calm and fair. A refreshing change from the often over the top comments by some. I enjoyed it very much and have subscribed.
Thanks - I try to be balanced at least 😀
The Glashutte SeaQ is absolutely stunning 😍
We agree! 😀
Totally a question out of left field: What do you think about Porsche Design watches?
I did not know Porsche made watches. I know they make Fountain pens though.
The vintage models made by IWC were great.
Zenith chrono is my grail - it's a 36,600 vph automatic movement which is very rare under 20k.
Wonderful stuff. Thanks, Mike.
You're welcome 😀 Cheers
I believe the Railmaster has been discontinued. The denim dial on a bracelet is my choice but hard to find now.
I'm hearing that too. A shame, but it never really did that well commercially apparently 😀
Thanks for watching and fair enough - We all have our favorites .😀😀
Can't wait to hear the 'alternative' to the Sky Dweller ...
This video should be called: Replace this ridiculously expensive watches with these other ridiculously expensive watches."
But at least for the other rediculous expensive watches you don't need to jump through hoops for the favour of being allowed to buy a watch from them and then wait for the call.
r/rolex have Stockholm syndrome
This isn’t for people who want a cheaper Rolex, it’s for people who don’t want to deal with Rolex’s current games - but can still afford one.
If someone was in the market for a Rolex to begin with but doesn’t want to put up with the headache, they’re probably not looking at the more affordable watches. He’s also made plenty of videos about much more affordable watches
That make me chuckle
I'm enjoying your videos, your insight, and your opinions. I'm also enjoying watching these out of order, seeing your This Many Days Since I Bought A Watch counter tick backwards. It's like some fancy European film!
thanks a ton 😀
Excellent video, Total agree on the Cartier Santos and the parmigiani tonda and Vacheron overseas
I can get behind most of those alternatives. My favorite being the SeaQ as an alternative to the Submariner. Which is why a reed green SeaQ sits on my wrist as I type this.
Just found your channel. You won me over with one video. Well done.
Thanks and welcome 😃
At 0:25 - Or get a Tissot Gentleman Powermatic for 1/10th the price of an Omega Aquaterra from the same parent company, with great heritage, and a VERY similar look.
The absolute best watch for under $1,000.
It's definitely a contender 😀
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch I’m curious, what would be 3 watches under $1,000 you think are better than a Tissot Gentleman?
I’m not saying there aren’t any, I just can’t think of one 😂
PS: I think the PRX is nice, but the Gentleman is much nicer and more versatile.
hey, i have the same optimus prime, did you ever modify into the truck? i forgot how to do it
Google it - There are a few youtube videos that show you how 😀
As far as the Explorer II is concerned, a more “wallet friendly” option could be the CW63. Not the same GMT movement, nor on the same levels as GS movement, but much more affordable and a different dial style that in my opinion, is actually better than Rolex.
