I have a few Zelos myself. My most recent purchase was a Mako GMT. For the first time, I had a problem with it, the on the fly micro adjust wasn't holding a setting and was loosening up. I ended up taking a link out and wore it that way for a bit, until summer came around and my wrist got a little wider. I emailed Zelos asking for guidance, they mailed me a new clasp after ensuring they had the correct type of watch, and that was the end of it. No nonsense good customer service and great quality for the price. The only reason I don't have the specific watch you showed is I didn't have the money for it when it was released and was saving up for a different watch in that price bracket that I have since purchased. But my first Zelos was a Spearfish with a lovely meteorite dial, so I'm not exactly missing out.
    Great, balanced review as always.

I have owned several Zelos watches but presently own a Mako 3 Ti watch. The others were sold at original cost due to having too many watches. I needed an additional link for one watch- and it arrived in less than a week. At no charge. I have mentioned a Mako 3 Ti Gmt. But no bites from Eloshan. Yet. The titanium in this watch does not feel flimsy. But it is different than steel. Also, the bracelet is silky smooth and does not grate like a jubilee. I’ll always have room for a Zelos. Great review on great watch.

Purchased two Zelos watches from their website. Both are terrific functioning timepieces but the designs are somewhat geared to a younger audience.
I’m an older collector. Have some of the usual brands such as Omega, Longines, ORIS, and Baume & Mercier. My taste runs more towards classic designs.
But, there are some outliers that are hard to ignore. My Zelos Blacktip and Eagle are both titanium and both have aventurine dials. Yet both look very different. The Blacktip is a classic handsome dive watch that appeals to my older taste. The Eagle is a pilot watch with some aggressive styling that is more appealing to a younger crowd. The Eagle was a gift to my son for his high school graduation. We both love it.
Also bought a CW Bel Canto, but still waiting for the notice that it’s ready for delivery. I feel some similarities between Zelos and CW in the way they conduct business.
Zelos has been very responsive when I’ve written to them. They have earned my respect. In the past I never would have purchased anything not made in Switzerland, Germany or Japan. It’s a new world.

You get full titanium case and bracelet, sapphire crystal, micro adjust clasp, sandwich dial with superluminova, 200M wr, screw down crown and an anti-magnetic faraday cage all for under $400. I don't think I have found another watch that gives so much for such a price. Perfect everyday watch! Wow, you turned down a free watch! That's discipline!

I got my Mako lll with the blue meteorite dial running a Miyota 9075. Price was the most expensive watch in this offering of this batch. A chunky boy at 15 mm with an Oyster bracelet, it runs about 4 seconds a day slow. $629.00 USD TT&L. It is my 1st traveler GMT. It is gorgeous. Lume is next level and yep, I will be buying another Zelos. Mike your reviews are superb. Thanks

I purchased a Zelos Spearfish 41mm late last year to be my beater travel watch. For $500 USD, the titanium case and bracelet are very nice. The bezel leaves much to be desired but at $500 for a full titanium watch on bracelet, not a problem. Overall, very happy with the quality to price ratio of the Spearfish. I think the sub $1000 price point is where Zelos really shines. At $2200, I would not consider their products.

Zelos is my go-to maker for exotic materials, and I'm enamoured with the damascus stainless steel Aurora with the meteorite dial. The grey colour of the steel case and the grey meteorite are well-matched, so much so that I think it is deliberate. The organic patterns in the damascus steel case and the straighter crystal patterns on the meteorite dial have a very pleasing visual contrast. If you ever get your hands on a steel-case Zelos, I think you would appreciate the weight and heft of it, especially when paired with the smoothness of the screw-down crown, it feels more "luxurious" than the titanium (whatever that word means)

I like the idea of microbrands coming into the market because they bring fresh, innovative designs that legacy watch makers are too lazy to produce.
In the microbrand field, Zelos is top tier in my opinion. Not only for their manufacturing expertise, but for their creative disigns and employment of exotic materials.

I own a blue dial Spearfish dual time watch since April. Thereafter, it never leaves from my twist. Its transparent dial design looks like batik and legibility (except the second time zone) regardless of daytime or at night. The luminous marker can last throughout the whole night. I enjoy seeing 2 tone of luminous especially enter into dark car park during daytime. I also like this titanium watch and bracelet, it is light, but you won't feel it cheap. This is my first watch come with fly adjustment, useful for change of weather temperatures. The watch accuracy is reliable, too. Screw down crown with 100 meter water resistant make it a versatile watch for daily use.
The only thing that I wish this watch is having 3 days of power reserves.

I don't own a zelos, but this watch has been considering it. Dual time is my favorite complication, and I really like the semi skeletonized look. I like unique watches, and this one is unique which is more than enough for me. The one thing that prevents me from buying it right now is the fact that it's a 40 mm watch. I don't have the best wrist because I have had carpal tunnel over the years and so certain sizes of watches just don't work on my wrist. I have a tutor black bay ceramic that I just can't wear despite the fact that I really like the watch and even though this one is titanium therefore not very heavy, if the size of the watch is too big then all of that is moot. I'm going to have to see if I can find somebody who will let me try this on.

I have 2 of their watches. The first was only possible because of their stellar customer service. Because of this, and of course falling in love with a newly released model, I was able to purchase another from them. They have always responded to my inquiries within 12 hrs which is impressive given they are 12-13hrs ahead of me depending on the time of year. If and when they come out with another watch that "calls to me", I wouldn't hesitate to try buying a 3rd. I say try as they usually sell out so dang quickly.

Between 1000-2500€, I lean towards Sinn, Oris, Longines, vintage Omega… and Zelos doesn’t belong to this (my!) list. I might be wrong, and I am willing to change my mind. Aloha from Hawaii, Mike -- You really should look at Serica, a young French-based brand that has very successfully met your challenge of avoiding the mass "convergence" or "cookie-cutter'ism" to watch design of which you speak. Their 5303 Chronometre diver and 8315 GMT are particularly intriguing models, and unlike anything else I've seen. Both retro (almost art deco) and modern; and completely original. After studying the brand for almost 2 years, I recently purchased the 5303 diver: enamel dial, soft-iron cage, COSC movement, and stunningly elegant fine mesh bracelet -- all for about US$1,600. It has far exceeded my expectations, and simply reeks quality and value. Hope you check out the brand.

You're my favourite watch pundit. You don't measure the micrometers, you look at the broad picture. And a higher level of independence is needed for that. It's easy to criticise a donated watch, it's harder to criticise a generous company.

I purchased a Mako GMT a couple months ago. Not that I needed a GMT, but it was closest to the color way I was looking for in a 40mm size. It's an absolute tank of a watch; very sturdy feeling with finishing that exceeds the price. I'm torn about Zelos' availability because they sell out so quickly, but ramping up production would likely result in QC fluctuation at least temporarily. So, overall, a great brand with unique offerings at a very good price (if you can find one in stock).

I own three Zelos watches (Mako Ti, Spearfish with a La Joux-Perret G100 movement, Swordfish), so you can see I am a bit of a Zelos fanboy... I love that they have a recognizable design language, they try things out, the watches are reasonably priced and of course their looks and build quality. I had one interaction with them regarding a problem with screws on a bracelet and they went out of their way to help me, so I have a really positive view of the brand. The only thing that is a bit of a disappointment is that the batches of watches are so small and immediately sell out, there have been multiple occasions where I was not fast enough pulling the trigger and did not get my favourite choice resp. nothing. I think Zelos is doing this so they don't have watches sitting on the shelf and can start with something fresh, not having money bound in the watches to be sold, but for the buyers this can be a bit frustrating.
I really like what they did with the watch you presented and although seeing the date mechanism is cool, it would be too busy looking for me. Also, I am more of a no-date person these days because I am lazy and like to wear different watches all the time.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Zelos (not the Spearfish though, I'm looking at the new Thresher), and watched this review again while trying to decide on the watch. From the review and also some of the comments, Zelos should be a good brand to deal with.
By the way, I don't really think it matters if the reviewer keeps or returns a review watch as long as all aspects of the watch are clearly presented so that I could make an informed decision for myself. Any opinions injected into a review, to me, is just for my entertainment, which I do welcome (an opinionless product review is usually pretty boring to watch). For me, this goes for reviews of any product.

What do you think about Nivada? I mean it’s not a microbrand. And it’s not a cheap homage but a ‘revival’ of an old brand.

I have high hopes for Zelos as a brand. While mechanical watcg sales numbers are at historical highs, the number of people actually buying and collecting watches is declining since the smartwatch and the mobile phone.
This leads me to believe that upstart brands will really only have a shot, if they can market to collectors as thise looking for one or two watches will prioritize brand prestige and history. The Lindy effext suggests that if zelos can make it another 50 years it'll gain that prestige, but only if it stays alive and makes a name for itself in the meantime. Baltic, Zelos, Christopher Ward and Nomos are my top picks for modern brands destined for longevity through their unique design, technical appeal, and solid craftsmanship. They just need to survive until they can thrive.

Do not mess with the “Zelots” lol. They are a fierce bunch. Proof of this is that most of their models are sold out. Love their community. Even though I still can’t become a member since the ones I like are not available.

I have my one and only Zelos that I have never worn and am wanting to get rid of it. I bought it back in January and after having had a taste of Christopher Ward, there's just no comparison. CW is better finished, IMHO. This isn't to negate your opinion of Zelos, Mike. This video is a good opinion of Zelos without being a fanboi. I just prefer quality over "quirkiness" ,if you will, and CW provides that at a good price. After all, where else can you get a Valjoux 7750 for under $1200, i.e., the c60 'Beast' ?😊

      @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch  4 месяца назад +1

I would agree that CW generally are better put together - they're also slightly more expensive. This watch is on the expensive side but most of the Zelos models are under 1K and for the price, they're pretty good 😀

I bought a Zelos Hammerhead, to use as a daily watch. I think its okay, got a good size for me at 44mm. It feels like a good quality watch, it keeps time okay, for a cheap automatic.. I dont think i would buy another Zelos though, i rather want to try something else.

Cool, not the watch as I cannot relate with any skeleton watch whatsoever, but the review and also Zelos’ “mantra”. Personally I don’t gel with any of their watches and find them a bit too expensive to take a gamble on an online purchase, but I like that they have their own design language and seem to have a good base support. If you really did send the watch back (and I’m going to take your word for it), you have my respect . We all know most reviewers are “bought off” by getting watches and flipping them in order to make a $ or fund their addiction so I take most of their reviews with a bucket load of salt.

Another great Saturday video drop, Mike! Thanks for owning the hypocrisy of the watch collecting community! Maybe you could do a video about the more out there watch designs, from entry level to luxury, Xeric to Ressence. For me, I've been struggling with whether I should buy a gold watch or not, because gold is out there for me. Looking into that led me to the Rolex Oyster Quartz, a watch I didn't expect to like so much. It's quartz! And very different for Rolex. Maybe I'll get to see one eventually. Thanks for another great video, sir!

I have a titanium Zelos (Mako V3 Frost) , great watch. I like this one, but I would never get it, I don't think. The looks are cool, but the legibility is so bad. I like an interesting watch, but I also like being able to tell the time at a quick glance. Maybe the black version with the yellow accents would be better, but I don't want a black case.

I have a first gen Seiko Astron with the best finished titanium I have ever observed. It is the SAST015. It has ceramic as well, which feels super cheap.
The watch was under $3,000 new, but I swear it feels more expensive than any watch under $10k, but I cannot tell you why, and the ceramic center links in the bracelet feel cheap, but it just doesn’t matter.
It is a huge watch, but I wish someone would review it. I love Astron, but no one else does. I adore the style, but it clearly does not translate outside of Japan.
In general I dig Seiko. I have an Aqua Terra, a Club Campus, but only my Formex Essence feels better than a $3,000 or higher Seiko, and I cannot figure out why.
I am thinking it is the case, crystal and dial. Really expensive watches have this (Lange, AP and Patrik are all obviously better), but I do not know what exactly I like and where else to find it.
Citizen Chronomaster “The Citizen” have the same feeling

Nice review as always. I never was interested in Zelos - didn’t like the logo - until this watch. Like you, love that date complication. Still not sure about the value at > $2k. And from the pictures I’m also not sure the hands stand out enough, common w many skeletons. And I just scratched my skeleton (and tonneau) itch w the Ciga Design Series Z Edge - for less than $300.

First, thank you for an excellent, balanced review. Just not feeling it. At this price point, I need to feel some connection to the brand, which for me includes some connection with brand history. I have much cheaper beaters from Seiko and significantly more expensive watches from Omega. Watches at this price point are tough. I like Squale at around this price point, though.

When it comes to titanium watches; Grand Seiko is a very divisive watch, but one thing is for sure, Grand Sseiko’s titanium is the most steel like finish I have worn on my wrist. If they up their bracelet design; they would be unstoppable. AKA Mr Valjoux

This watch to my eyes trips over at the first hurdle, insufficient contrast between hands and dial face. I sold my Omega Seamaster 300m NTTD titanium because of this reason, the failure to tell the time in low light. Good review, respect your integrity.

True - GS doesn’t specifically say what their high intensity titanium alloy is composed of, but it’s likely something like a G5 with some percentage og vanadium and aluminium in it - which contributes to the alloy being more “polishable” - zaratsu and all.
The Zelos and the other watches I mentioned are all G2 or versions thereof with little to no aluminium og vanadium. That’s why the are darker in shade and can’t be mirror polished and end up having that rougher feel.
      Cheers 😀

If I had the money, this would definitely be a watch for me. I am not very interested in the " Classically restrained" watches. I like being the one person in the room whose watch doesn't look like everyone else. There's a certain sensation of pride and joy when you are in a room of seasoned collectors, and they all say, "What is that!".
