A man talking passionate about watches with an impressive range of technical and industry knowledge. I really love this channel. It’s like listening to a good friend about a shared passion. 😎
Took my grandfather's 1951 IWC for a service, it hasn't ever been serviced. The watch maker didn't want to service it, because it was running 100 % after he checked its timekeeping accuracy .
I joined the channel a couple of weeks ago. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the thoughtful and fair minded critiques of watches, brands and the industry as a whole.
Here is the scoop on servicing. If you’ve purchased your watch within the last 15 years you do Not need to service at any set intervals especially if the watch is not worn everyday and is part of a larger rotation. Newer watches use synthetic oils that do not gunk up, degrade, or evaporate like older mineral oils. Periodically check them on a timegrapher and if the amplitude is between 230-315, small beat error, not running too fast or too slow then there is absolutely No reason to submit the watch to an intervention that may ultimately introduce issues that were not originally there.
My favorite of your videos.... feels like a conversation over a beer or iced tea. I like off the cuff takes... allows for contemplation and encourages opinion.
Thank you for answering my question . You are my favourite watch reviewer . Honest no nonsense advice and reviews. I told my watchmaker what you said… well I actually played your comments he smiled said spot on and surprise he is also a subscriber of yours !
I have loved mechanical watches since I was a little boy in a working town, playing with my first Timex watch. More than sixty years has passed but that fascination continues. This channel gives me great joy to watch and Mike's knowledge is remarkable and helpful to me to understand watches and to help me understand what I like and need from a watch. Thank you for your effort and in some ways, as others have said, we sit together each video over a cup of coffee and muse together about this wonderful craft. Thank you for providing joy and grace during the Winter of my life.
I am deeply ignorant when it comes to watches. I would like to read more about them and learn more, but the philosophy of language always steals my attention. Notwithstanding ignorance, I love watches. The way you talk about watches, your knowledge, and politeness captured my attention. Thank you so much for all your contents, I highly appreciate your work.
I have helped other watch enthusiasts build a watch collection. My suggestions are to have a high end watch that meets your life style. For me that’s a Tudor BB and a Rolex Explorer II. Consider a vintage watch, for me it’s all about Seikos, I have some 70s Seiko Lord Marvel, Lord Matic, King Seiko, and Grand Seiko. I love pairing these with interesting watch bands and these vintage pieces allow me to play with various watch bands. Finally have something that you can wear everyday that is accurate, has a GMT function maybe and that holds a good condition for a long time. For me that’s a Traska Venturer II as it will look the same as the day you bought it 2, 3 or 5 years due the road. I’ve had to adjust mine as it ran a bit fast but it’s sub €1k and something I can work on myself.
Wow, a reference to Chris Reeve Knives. I have a custom macassar Sebenza 31 on order for about 2 or 3 years now, expecting it in maybe another 2 or 3 years. Recently received my Green Beret 7" serrated which I ordered at the same time. I had a ladder damascus bog oak Mnandi, but I can't find it anywhere. I think I may have lost it when I moved my mother to a nursing home. I loved that knife. So elegant.
Congrats on the 50k! Your stream of consciousness part is my favorite part of your videos. I put them on in the background and don’t usually watch the b-roll.
One watch for the rest of my life: that’s a tough one One watch channel for the rest of my life: This Watch, That Watch No clickbait, no nonsense, just thoughtful, knowledgeable and passionate discourse on watches past, present and future. Well-deserved on 50k subs, the sky’s the limit! I recognised the GS GMT as the SBGM221, if you’re looking for a 5Hz hi-beat movement I can recommend the SBGJ201 Mount Iwate that I’ve owned for a year. The 44GS case really brings out the best of the zaratsu polishing.
There are a lot of great watch RUclipsrs with different formats that all belong and add value but in my opinion you are the best in the game at what you do
Good to hear your stance about winders, as a watchmaker since 2011 and in Rolex sales since 2018. I must say that a watch winder is good for the watch the most anoying myth. Almost on a daily basis do I have to debunk it. On second place comes Rolex are not good, only marketing and third, Tudor is just as good as Rolex just cheaper. Btw love your channel, you know what you are talking about. Greetings from Sweden!
I've heard a watchmaker say that the materials they're using today are selected with easy machining in mind rather than longevity, and as a result of those softer materials, new movements don't have the longevity potential that old movements had. That's probably why that old watchmaker said new movements are junk.
Absolutely love your channel. Yesterday I finished going through the back catalog of every video you've done. Truly the most insightful watch content I've seen. Huge congratulations on 50k subscribers!! 🎉 I have no doubt I'll be here for when your tremendous channel reaches a million!

Sir, thank you for the information. Your Watch Town is growing and you have happy citizens. I enjoy your travels to the luxury stores and to the more affordable but great stores. The best part for me is the breadth and depth of your learning regarding business and the watches. Enjoy your milestone and look forward to many more.
It’s like you’re reading my mind on most points but you convey explanations and ideas on another level. On ‘are modern watches junk’ I suspect the watchmaker is referring to materials, such as the increased use of silicon, but your answer about serviceability still covers it.
Awesome content as always… I’ve got so fed up with watch RUclipsrs the past few months and you still remain the only one I watch religiously… just the best, nough said…
You are very good communicator, thoughtful and have paid attention over the years. Vintage authentic well done. Listen up People. Real Deal. Congratulation on 50k, you do the work and deliver. Thank you
I had an IWC Big Pilots Watch that sat in a safe for about 20 years, never ever worn, and when I finally took it out for a test run it ran perfectly with no issues. Talk about keeping it in perfect condition 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for another great video and happy SQUALE made the cut this time as an affordable tool watch. I bought a 1521 a year + ago and it quickly became my daily despite owning 10+ watches that a way more expensive (yes including an Omega Diver 300 TND). Keep up with your great content, always a pleasure
My Rolex AD told me that I should not have my watches serviced unless there is something wrong. She told me that there is a small risk that there will be dust getting into the movement every time the case is opened. So as long as it is running fine everything is fine.
Here is what you need to know about serving. If you’ve purchased your watch within the last 15 years you do Not need to service at any set intervals especially if the watch is not worn everyday and is part of a larger rotation. Newer watches use synthetic oils that do not gunk up, degrade, or evaporate like older mineral oils. What you do is... outstanding! Sharing information on so many levels, in a open minded fashion! Thanks and congratulations Mike. I noticed your nice Iron Heart shirt a while ago, i am wearing this Japan Made stuff (Lofgren, At Last, Flathead…) myself. In my opinion: Quality last's longer and costs less in the long run, then weekly changing trends. Maybe thats a age thing.
My sincerest congratulations on reaching 55k, this is beyond well-deserved. Now that that’s out of the way, here comes the heresy. When discussing the future of the watch industry twenty minutes in, it sounded to me more like a representation of the watch industry from the past. A mid-60s vintage 4-digit Rolex 5512 has all of the attributes mentioned and delivered them at an affordable price to boot. I sincerely hope that you’re right and that the we are indeed headed back in this direction. I look forward to a time when watches are again just hitting their stride after a sixtieth birthday. Just like those enthusiasts that still cover and wear them.
Great episode . Many thanks . I felt so happy that you appreciate the Cerina : Certina Aqua DS PH1000. Turquoise. I purchesed few hours before your broadcast. Wow🎉 With huge appreciation Nizar
These videos are great! Not even done watching, but had to come and comment the love for the Chris Reeve reference. Also that you chose to show the Umnumzaan, that blade sells out in minutes, if not seconds when it becomes available. Happens to be a favorite in my collection too. Keep up the great videos, definitely enjoy them.
Regarding watch winders, an AD said the exact same thing to me . Not necessary as long as you wear the watch every now and again. He also added, "I mean, just look at my store - there are watches for sale here that have not moved in months...." refreshingly honest dude :-)
I’m glad you referenced the sound Omega 8900 movement. That’s in my globemaster. I’ve read elsewhere what a solid movement it is. Twin barrel metas accreditation, love that watch.
Watch winders: I’m a watch technician (self taught, but still, I’ve been servicing watches for years) It’s not needed, it won’t damage your watch, but I think that if it’s something you would like to have to ensure X amount of watches in your collection are ready to wear. Get one. But they really aren’t needed in most cases and really aren’t going to make a huge difference. I haven’t tried most out, but a winder that just kicks on for a specified period of time per day would be optimal.
Yours is a good take on a polarizing subject. I am tired of those who slap back with the "You wouldn't leave your car running when you're not using it, would you?" response, demonstrating their lack of understanding of both the mechanical watch and the internal combustion engine. That argument is tired and weak. I agree with you; if the owner wants to use a winder, go for it. Just buy a good one. And Mike, congratulations on the 50K milestone.
Great content, delivered with knowledge and enthusiasm in an elequant way. Refreshing and engaging! I owned and loved my Omega Seamaster 300m NTTD but eventually sold it as I found it impossible to read the time in low light conditions, such as sitting in my lounge! However, aesthetically, I still miss the watch.
As for servicing, I purchased a timegrapher and baselined all of my automatic watches. Will test them every 6 months, should be fairly easy to see when one starts dropping off
Thank you for all your thoughts and insights - its really appreciated. Looking forward to part 2. For some people an alternative approach to luxury items . . . may be build it yourself. An alternative (to the luxury item) is to customise the product to suit your preferences - becomes more special to you.
Skeletons - yup, agree. Most are yuk - hard to read, not that beautiful. They are tough to do well. But I fell in love with the Zenith Defy skeleton in blue and bought one earlier this year. It is absolutely the favourite in my collection.
No wonder you got to 50K, your channel is awesome (if it weren't for your fixation with Tee-udor and CW 🤣)! It is one of the very few sources of genuine discussion on watches and I find myself watching your videos more and more, no matter if I agree or not with you. Here's to a 100K!
Thanks. I'm not that fixated on the two brands - I'm just mindful that I'm speaking to a big audience and when using examples and references it's best to mention something that a lot of people can relate to. People know Tudor, Omega, CW (to some extent) and Rolex. Me referencing some obscure microbrand might help the microbrand but it doesn't conjur a relatable picture in the audiences head. That's why they get mentioned 😊😊
My experience correlates with your assessment of the differences between the $500 and $1,500 ranges. I started collecting automatic watches over 20 years ago and didn't purchase any with a list price over $500 until 2022, when I bought my first Swiss made piece, a Mido Multifort Dual Time GMT (current price $1,200). I was absolutely unprepared for the quantum leap in improvement of finishing (even with just a cursory glance) and also the functioning of the Mido vs. my other watches. I think Mido represents a great value in my (subjective) opinion.
Great Q&A video once again. Liked your definition of value. Better saying your comment on value. I think you addressed it very nicely and it is in the end of the day in the eye of the beholder. Keep up the good work.
I have something I would love to hear your thoughts on. People complain about scalpers and how hard it is to get a Rolex but that’s the only reason people like them so much. There are hundreds of other brands that are comparable to Rolex but people only want them because they’re hard to get, not that they actually like the design THAT much more than any other brand. If Rolex flooded the market and made them as easily available as other luxury brands the people who REALLY wanted them would lose that feeling in my opinion.
Marketing and name mostly. Even people who don't care about watches know what a Rolex is. If a manager who just recieved his first bonus wants to show he is doing well, what watch will he buy ? A Rolex. In a lot of cases, the name is more important than the watch itself.
Of course. Even this dude bought a $40K rose gold Rolex annual calendar lol what a waste of money there are watches that are orders of magnitude more fine than that piece but they don’t have the crown at 12 o clock!
Yes & no. Many people forget that before the Pandemic most Rolex watches were available as a walk-in, except the Daytona. Rolex is building a new factory, scheduled to open in 2029, to double manufacturing to 2 million units per year. The fact is today that any model Rolex is available, just not at the Authorized Dealer. Which despite their excuses about supply & demand, adds to the frustration of buying a Rolex at the store level. One day the pendulum will swing back to purchasing at retail.
@@Doggo-frencton It's obvious he runs in money circles based on the observations he makes about watches and brand perception, as well as the clothes he wears. In his world, owning a Rolex probably matters. In my world, it doesn't at all. That's okay, I enjoy his videos for the information and opinions he shares, but he is in a different social class to many, if not most, of his viewers, so when he talks about luxury tiers, I always keep context in mind, and at least he knows what he is talking about and has an interesting watch collection (based on what he has chosen to reveal). We all have different situations, social lives, jobs etc. A love of watches unites us ultimately! 😁
I wear a I-watch thru the work week and a Swatch Irony from 12 years ago on weekends or vacation. Wish I had bought a Rolex in mid 90s when they were around 5K. Bought a Bmw instead. Love automatic watches and your show.

Periodically check them on a timegrapher and if the amplitude is between 230-315, small beat error, not running too fast or too slow then there is absolutely No reason to submit the watch to an intervention that may ultimately introduce issues that were not originally there.
You've become my # 1
"go to" for watch buff stuff.
Congratulations on your continued growth!
Thanks a ton for the support 😊😊
Get a sign made with your channels name in the background!! You deserve it and it's about darn time!! Love your channel mate. 🍻
Need to make a good logo first 😊😊
Thanks for the video. Look forward to the second part
You bet! 😊😊
I have quickly grown to love this channel. Well done
Awesome, thank you 😊
Bang on again! Define value before discussing the value.
Thanks a ton for the feedback. 🙂
Great episode . Many thanks .
I felt so happy that you appreciate the Cerina : Certina Aqua DS PH1000. Turquoise.
I purchesed few hours before your broadcast. Wow🎉
With huge appreciation
Nizar
The Certina is a cool watch. It should be much more talked about 😊😊
Such a great video! Answered so many questions for me! Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this
Thanks for watching 🙂
The boss. There are a lot of good watch channels but this and ID Guy are all you really need.
Kind of you. Thanks a ton 😊
Congrats 🍾 on 50k and 99 days Mike 😎!!
Thanks a million and thanks for sticking around for so long 😊😊
These videos are great!
Chris Reeve for the win 😀😉
Listening from wise man from wise words are pleasure for me, Thanks for your time and effort.
Regarding watch winders, an AD said the exact same thing to me . Not necessary as long as you wear the watch every now and again. He also added, "I mean, just look at my store - there are watches for sale here that have not moved in months...." refreshingly honest dude :-)
Lol - I like his way of putting it 😂
I’m glad you referenced the sound Omega 8900 movement. That’s in my globemaster.
I’ve read elsewhere what a solid movement it is. Twin barrel metas accreditation, love that watch.
Thank you,🙏 😊 I do enjoy and learn a lot from you’re shows
So nice of you 😊
If watch talk was music to my ears...
This channel is it 🎉😮😅
❤️❤️
the only watch channel that talks about why watches. Godsend.
Lol 😂
I love your insightful content presented in a calm manner. Thank you!
Watch winders: I’m a watch technician (self taught, but still, I’ve been servicing watches for years)
It’s not needed, it won’t damage your watch, but I think that if it’s something you would like to have to ensure X amount of watches in your collection are ready to wear.
Mike. This is fantastic content. Appreciate the effort you put in. Thank you.
Great content Mike! Love your channel!
Fast becoming the go to channel for watch enthusiasts
Yay! Thanks 😊
Your channel and opinions are honest and knowledgeable. Good job! All best from Mexico City!
Thanks a ton. Cheers 😊
Coming out wednesday 😊😊
Another fine installment!
thank you kindly 😊
Congrats on breaking 50K. Please continue the good work.
Will try my best at least 🙂
Certina is an under rated brand. I've got a DS Podium for 10 years now, it still mesmerise me when I look at it.
Skeletons - yup, agree. Most are yuk - hard to read, not that beautiful. They are tough to do well. But I fell in love with the Zenith Defy skeleton in blue and bought one earlier this year. It is absolutely the favourite in my collection.
I own the Grand Seiko you showed. It's great!! Surprised on mention of Sinn for the cheaper, serious divers. Looking forward to episode 2! Well done!
I with you, my NTTD is on the top of my “I can only keep on” list.
Always enjoy your insights brother! You are as real as they come and people appreciate it! Hope you have a great one!
To you too! Thanks for sticking around 😊

Sorry to disagree. I'm no fan of Rolex, but hundreds equally as good? Not. But Maybe, a dozen...
I wear a I-watch thru the work week and a Swatch Irony from 12 years ago on weekends or vacation. Wish I had bought a Rolex in mid 90s when they were around 5K. Bought a Bmw instead. Love automatic watches and your show.
