I have few watches but wear only 1 - Speedmaster Professional. I can't be one of these guys who looks at the watch box and trying to decide what to wear today. One watch is way to go. It can be difficult because of many, many temptations. I would love the IWC Pilot be this 1 watch, but I have the Speedmaster and I will not break my one watch rule. I've been rocking my Forged Carbon PRX as my engineering watch for the past month and it's been fantastic! Non-conductive case, silicon based balance spring, low profile, and date complication. Only things I'd want in addition is a 12 hour chrono for timing adhesive cure times and electrical stress tests.
Damasko DA36 that has been on my wrist 24/7 for the past 8 years diving, hiking, construction work, hunting, fishing, boating, board rooms. For me it has been the ultimate GADA
I am a professional antique restorer, i wear a Seiko alpinist daily. Unfortunately the -40 seconds a day has been very annoying, and across the last 3 years of use, i have finally gotten a bit too frustrated with it and am now wearing an Erebus Ascent to work. -2 seconds a day, looks classy. Might get one of those Sinns next year.
I'm a manufacturing Engineer in an electro chemical facility, and have been very satisfied with my baltic aquascaphe. Has taken many chemical dunks and hard knocks and is unfazed beyond some scuffs. Still holding fantastic time as well.
As an FYI, the Alpinist is also available with a black dial (SPB117). It lists at $25 more but comes with a bracelet instead if a strap. It has a slightly different dial (no large 2 4 6 8 10 12, and different hour markers). I prefer this layout, but do love the green dial of the SPB121.
Yeah, I like the SPB117 a lot more. Clean and simple and more purposeful. I've always thought the SPB121 just looks kind of weird - it's like they tried to cram too many different design elements into one watch.

G Shock GA100 did four tours of Afghanistan and Iraq. Battery ran flat in about 2016 and was wearing an Eterna Kontiki then just replaced the battery myself. Talk about making a lot out of a little, it’s a simple joy wearing a G Shock again.
G Shock is really the one tool watch here, the rest are simply less or more expensive luxury watches. How is Submariner is a tool? US Marine wearing Submariner while on tour in Afghanistan? Really? All Swiss watches are status symbols, that's all they are. They can be very, very nice watches, but tools they are not.
@ in fairness, I had a mate (from enlisted service) who wore a Speedmaster mechanical moonwatch on a Velcro animal strap whilst door gunning on Lynx Helicopters in the desert. Pretty good way to shut the pilots up when they asked you to carry the bags.
I use my G-Shock GW-5610U for almost everthing. It’s my most worn watch! I only use my luxury watches for the special occasions and for office sometimes
Hello from a fellow Ohioan! I'm a Search & Rescue tech (professionally certified, but volunteer), and my day job is design engineering. My daily tool watch is a black PVD Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, but mainly because I happened to find it on clearance at a local shop 😄. I was originally after a Field Auto, but I love it. Legibility is my #1 priority, closely followed by a low profile on the wrist; this watch does both very well, and anything else is kind of just a bonus. I'm always crawling through brush, reaching into bags of equipment, dealing with pack and climbing straps, and wrenching on machinery in tight spaces, and it's VERY annoying when my watch snags on something lol. I'm also constantly checking time in the field for radio check-ins, taking spotting notes, you name it. If I had to complain, Tritium would be nice for night ops, and I do miss the date functionality for daily use. But to be honest, I've found that white dials are perfectly fine even on moonless/cloudy nights, and I keep a Casio F91W (with day-date) in my chest radio rig as backup! I considered a Marathon GP because of the Tritium, but I think the sharp edges and corners would cause it to snag more, I'm not big on the small strap width, and it doesn't flex quite as nicely as a casual or workwear piece. Their "SAR" model, ironically, seems like it would be a giant pain to wear lol. Compass bezels are redundant as you'd probably guess, since we operate using specialized GPS software and are required to carry 2x Silva Rangers and maps as backup, and know primitive land nav. But, the Alpinist's looks GREAT as an aesthetic choice. My next watch will likely be either a Khaki Field Auto, a Seiko SPB121 (little less low-pro, but damn is that green gorgeous in person!), or a Christopher Ward Sandhurst. Really dig the Sinn and a few others, but I'm more of a $500-$750 kinda guy... SAR gear is already tough on the budget 😅. Thanks for the video!
@jwilson1744 pretty well, actually! I was surprised, but maybe I shouldn't have been... I have some background in a directly related field, but I tend to doubt any marketing claims as a rule lol. I have definitely banged it up quite a bit on metal and wood surfaces (to the point where I cringe and am afraid to look 😂), and there's not a scratch on it.
In October, I got a Tudor Pelagos LHD. Great at my job (after hour security for my school district) and looks fine when going out to dinner. The lume of the watch is great to have when I'm walking around a school at 2AM and don't need to take out my phone, especially if I'm actively looking for someone, I'm not giving away my location from my phone screen.
I love my Sinn 104 white dial! It’s solid, scratch resistant and very classy, but functional. Happy Thanksgiving to you guys! Currently wearing my SeikoLuxe 1968 reissue! Dial is amazing! Black Friday looking at your site though! Always looking for my next watch….lol, it’s a disease!
I have the Alpinist - love it! I have the Explorer - love it! I now have watch envy and a need to achieve a trinity - I've actually been looking at the Tudor Ranger, telling myself that it is silly, I don't need it. And yet, now I do. Joys of being a watch enthusiast. 😁
I would have to include the Breitling Avenger 42 automatic here, or even better, the recently discontinued Avenger 43 automatic, which can still be found new for around $3k. They look especially nice with fabric/calfskin strap. For a cheap option, Timex North Expedition has some surprisingly nice options. I have the Tide & use it for surfing. In addition to being one of the very few analog watches which can track the tide, it has the brightest lume I've ever seen on a watch. There are other offerings in the line which offer sapphire, active compass, and indiglow.
For Seiko alpinist I'm more of a fan of Laurel alpinist. I think it is way more versatile than normal or baby alpinist. I basically wear it everywhere from Thru-hike, diving, to meeting my clients in the office, and even formal events.
My Submariner is my go-to usually, although I do try to wear my other 11 watches. but it is absolutely a tool watch, I use it every day to swim laps with and for all my other aspects of life.
Just 2 questions: Can you use the crown of the longines super compressor to rotate the bezel in water? If not, that is counter productive isn't it? Don't you think low pressure resistance is kind of gimmicky? I mean ordinary watches can be used in the same environment (inside a passenger aircraft) without any issues.
I am a LEO in a specialised unit, we do plain cloth and raid work. I wear a 116610LN Submariner as a daily beater which I am going to pass down to my son. It was bought in his birth year. I want him to inherit something I actually wore, that hopefully will have some sentimental value to him.
High chance he will sell it off unless he is well off. (speaking from experience😅). Not that my fathers watch wasn't sentimental to me, but he had 5+ watches.
I'm a land/technical surveyor. To me a tool watch is a watch, that can stand up to being worn while using a sledge hammer. Water resistance needs to be better than an arms length into water/mud.
Idea for a future topic: watches for guys with bigger wrists. Perhaps with a dial size ranging from 42-45mm and especially showing also other than dive watches which seem to be the most prominent category in this size range. I feel like that hasn't been looked into that much compared to highlighting smaller options.
That's a video I'd like to see! I've got an 8 inch wrist! I'm finding it hard to get a watch they're all so small" like a ladies watch" I'm a bit older now my eyesight isn't what it used to be. Bigger watches are easier to glance at once they get bigger they also get thick and bulky. I've had many watches over the years the bigger ones all got destroyed. "I'm a motorcyclist outdoors type guy and I'll stick my hand in anything that's why I stopped wearing my explorer because I scratched the glass the day I got it replaced. My speedmaster 125 bought new sits in the drawer with the explorer. When I bought them new they weren't that expensive but now they're too expensive to wear at my age "don't want to get mugged" currently wearing a speedmaster homage as it has always been my favourite. Just wish it came out in a few bigger sizes and didn't sit so proud on the wrist. I like the Idea of a GMT duel time zone as here in Australia in Qld we don't have daylight saving time but the rest of Australia does if I've got to ring or order something that duel time zone is very handy.*be been looking at the big Casio edifice range seems they make larger watches that have those features and aren't as thick I've searched all the micro brands and found some very interesting ideas. The issue is that they all seem to make smaller watches anyway I just found your page and am liking it
That BALL watch.... MAAAN. That is perfection! I wish I had 2.7 k stored, would not blink twice to buy it! What an amazing look and you can actually SEE the quality of this piece with a naked eye
@@nathanf1934 Not at all... Other than the case shape i see no similarities... Completely different style with hands, hour markers, bracelet... 90% of other "dressy" watches look more like date just than this one
I would also consider for the under $1,000 aviation category, the Glycine Airman Vintage GMT. Really nice watch with date complication and GMT function. If that one has too much going on, the Airpilot is a good one as well.
Pick from Teddy's list, 1st choice is Seiko Alpine , low price and can do anything on daily work or activity. 2nd choice is Ball Engineer III date in green dial, good looking and it is 1/3 of Rolex Explorer, and half the price of Omega Aquatarer , Rolex Submariner and IWC Engineer is over 10000 usd are actually over priced much. Not considered.
I was hoping to see the “Land” category have more military style watches. Teddy stayed safe with major brands, but this use case could have more rugged pieces that perhaps do more than tell the time. Understood there is an archetype for field watches, but this was “land” and I think the aperture could have been wider.
Teddy, it's admirable that you donate 2 dollars to charity for every dollar you spend on watches. Which charities do you support and how can we, your subscribers, help in the causes that are important to you?
Tudor Ranger is da bomb. It looks boring and utilitarian but it fits the description of a tool that tells the time. In a way, it looks more elegant than similar watches a fraction of the price. I bought the bracelet variant, however I also purchased the 'overpriced' NATO strap as an extra as it is a better fit for a field watch. I used the bracelet on my BB58 as it is definitely better with a T-fit adjustment and the absence of fake rivets
Hanhart Preventor and Archimede Outdoor as Land/Adventure wearers should have a honorable mention. Especially the Archimede as the outdoor is offered in titanium at 20 ATM WR anit-magnetic.
Hi Teddy, what would be the best watches to withstand 150 degrees + F temps as well as steam for 30+ minutes? Yes, I’d like one I can wear in the sauna.
@andrewmonahan9510 Sinn EZM 3F or EZM 3. it’s rated and tested to withstand that temp and has a special capsule built into the side of the case that draws out moisture from entering the case/movement while preventing the glass from fogging!
I love this topic!! I like to use the rotating bezel of my diver watch to cook pasta, pizza and other stuff. Basically to tell elapsed time for specific tasks. I know the stop watch of my smartphone can do it better, but where's the charm of it??
I would make only one change: instead of IWC Mark XX I would choose a Zenith Pilot Big Date Flyback or Breguet Type XX. A flyback chronograph would be a more suitable aviation tool watch than a flieger date-only watch.
The Submariner is my favorite beater. Not because it's cheap. It objectively isn't. But because it sort of begs to be worn a lot and used without babying it. It's hard to describe unless you have one. It overcomes that fear that would normally exist wearing a watch of that price.
It's a watch, it doesn't overcome fears. A submariner is for showing off, not for telling the time. If you wanted to tell the time, you would have got far more accurate watches for far cheaper. Please don't kid yourself.
@@robertposteschild2353 Not only is Submariner one of the most show off watches, it is extremely common. It is McDonalds of watch world, it has zero charisma because of the huge number of them around, it is the most cliché of watches, together with GMT. They are everywhere you go, no one gives the Sub another look, another thought, it is just a Submariner. Not saying it is a bad watch, it is very beautiful, it is just become so very common, it is boring and Swiss watch should never be common nor boring. Swiss watch has to be exciting, have a character, stand out from the crowd. It is Seiko 5 for people who have 10k to spend.
I use an old Victorinox 24653, Casio DBC611, Vostok Amphibian, Casio GMW-B5000PC. I work at a major university but I do construction and service on their infrastructure. I like your suggestions but I wouldn’t wear any of them for work
Fantastic picks and comments, as usual! Except for the Sinn in the 1-4k Pilot category. We know how much Ted is in for the brand, and there is plenty of reason for that, but…. Come on… And please, nothing detrimental to the brand, but it just does not look or feel like a genuine pilot watch…. What about a Laco? Just a thought. Except for that, great content! Congrats!
Hi Mr. Teddy. May you please have a vlog explaining what is a dress watch vs. a sport watch, field watch vs. tool watch, and other watch categories that I have no knowledge. Thank you. More power to your YT channel.
Just got my grail watch this week: Alpinist....I know everyone thinks a grail has to be 2k or more, but for me, the Alpinist was perfect.
If some1 ever put a price tag on what can be considered a grail or not. They are not a true enthusiast
@@philipbrault3109 agree
It such a special watch. The charisma and charm never wears off like it does with other watches.
The alpinist glows without needing rare metal or diamonds, which not every watch can do. My grail as well (green dial only)

@@BRMCaptChaos Interesting, but if I had to guess, Speedmaster in a war zone is probably an exception, very cool, though.
I use my G-Shock GW-5610U for almost everthing. It’s my most worn watch! I only use my luxury watches for the special occasions and for office sometimes
had a sub for years. recently purchased a new omega seamaster 300 and it is just better both on paper and on the wrist.
Just got a khaki field king as my first watch. Love the day date window and it's the same watch house wore in house MD.
Teddy please do the yearly what-you-wear-the-most feat watch yters again
How do you find the PVD has held up with ‘proper’ daily field use?
@jwilson1744 pretty well, actually! I was surprised, but maybe I shouldn't have been... I have some background in a directly related field, but I tend to doubt any marketing claims as a rule lol. I have definitely banged it up quite a bit on metal and wood surfaces (to the point where I cringe and am afraid to look 😂), and there's not a scratch on it.
Fun clip as always Teddy. My tool watch definition is simple. Any watch worn by a ‘tool’ is a tool watch.
This guy speaks from experience. Just joking, I was like in the same thing.
My two ultimate tool watches are my Doxa Sub 300T and Omega Railmaster. Just got a CW Lumiere a few weeks ago and it is becoming a favorite tool.
I still think the IWC makes the nicest looking watch, its both simplistic and classic.
Happy Holidays, Teddy. Your website and this channel have been two of the gifts I've received this year. Thank you.
😂
Tudor Ranger's sell at the second hand market at crazy low prices. Really underrated useful, chill piece
The Ranger is very likely my next watch. And at 2nd-hand prices, I really don't think it can be beat.
The plural of Ranger is Rangers, not "Ranger's". Just add an s.
This exact Sinn us basically my - piece collection. Wear it every day with everything, formal or not. Excellent quality and design
Just 2 questions:
Can you use the crown of the longines super compressor to rotate the bezel in water? If not, that is counter productive isn't it?
Don't you think low pressure resistance is kind of gimmicky? I mean ordinary watches can be used in the same environment (inside a passenger aircraft) without any issues.
I do use my Bulova precisionist as a daily wear and quite often use the chronometer to time events and reactions. 😊
seiko SNE solar for the win
I really hope Sinn releases the 104 with a white dial and numerals hour markers, similar to the blue and green dial special editions.
That green Alpinist looks beautiful.😍😍
Idea for a future topic: watches for guys with bigger wrists. Perhaps with a dial size ranging from 42-45mm and especially showing also other than dive watches which seem to be the most prominent category in this size range. I feel like that hasn't been looked into that much compared to highlighting smaller options.
I wear Hamilton below zero 46 mm automatic vajoux 7650 chronograph
@haythamayad7308 thanks for sharing! I'll check out that one
A straight up date just rip off!
4:10 Circula sounds like Dracula’s sister 😂
I hope you become an AD for Sinn one day, Teddy.
Solid selections. Well done
That Hamilton 39MM is beautiful - especially with a blue dial. Easily the best 'bang for bucks' watch on here.
Awesome video, Teddy!
I go freediving with my Rolex Sub all the time, it’s still a great tool!
I love this topic!! I like to use the rotating bezel of my diver watch to cook pasta, pizza and other stuff. Basically to tell elapsed time for specific tasks. I know the stop watch of my smartphone can do it better, but where's the charm of it??
Other excellent tool watch choices: Longines Spirit Titanium 40mm🔥, Hamilton Expedition 37mm 🔥
Isn't the Submariner, together with GMT the most cliché, ever?
I love the green glowing balls , but you can not beat blue balls
My tool watch is my Seiko SNXS, just 30m water resistance; taken it swimming, jet skiing etc and it still keeps going.
Very well presented. Thanks for the info!
Instead of Aqua Terra, The railmaster is probably more fitting for this video imo
My Casio G-shock MT-G B3000 Silver and Gold does everything mentioned in this video!
Comex submariner on saturation diving is great tool, offshore is dangerously high risk
My favorite Tool watch is a MWC infantry quartz with both 12/24 hour format, 300m water resistance and sapphire crystal.
Nice review teddy
Outstanding video here. 👏🏼
Thank you, Teddy!
You forgot about the Laco Flieger and Beobachtungs Uhr.
Best bang for the buck, and few wear them.
I sure do like the Circula. That dial color is the cat's nuts!
I use an old Victorinox 24653, Casio DBC611, Vostok Amphibian, Casio GMW-B5000PC. I work at a major university but I do construction and service on their infrastructure. I like your suggestions but I wouldn’t wear any of them for work
Also.. you need a date window, at minimum for a tool watch.
Is there any watch that handles extreme cold? Wondering how much temperature will affect them. Thanks for any help
Congrats!
Great picks 👌🏽! I would like to nominate Seiko SJE101J1 as best “water” watch haha.
It’s gotta be Seiko best before you go Grande haha😂
And happy holidays everybody!
Hi Mr. Teddy. May you please have a vlog explaining what is a dress watch vs. a sport watch, field watch vs. tool watch, and other watch categories that I have no knowledge. Thank you. More power to your YT channel.
Protrail is a great choice.
The legend is too hard to use the bezel without removing the watch.
Ball mentioned ! Would like to see special video about Ball watches
Stop apologizing for picking Rolex. They simply make the best watches for the price.
Teddy, on the Circula anti-mag - I've got a Smiths (Timefactors) PRS40 which is rated at 4,800 and was ~£220 GBP.
Beautiful list
