      It’s funny cuz I would’ve never even considered how calling a watch a “beater” could be offensive to someone. I see that as a huge compliment towards the watch! It’s something that can withstand pretty much anything and is great for everyday use. The fact that he was so mindful of that made me appreciate how he’s not a snob and is a good guy who just loves watches

    as an 18 year old with a very limited budget, i’ve managed to acquire 3 watches, all per teddy’s recommendations. my first ever was a timex weekender, which is my beater of choice. picked it up for $30 on ebay, and to this day it’s one of the best $30 i’ve ever spent. i also have an orient maestro as a dressier casual watch, and an orient mako ii that i sometimes wear like a beater as well, but not to the same degree as my timex. great content as always teddy!

    Great stuff Teddy. I bought a SKX009 right before USAF survival school over 20 years ago, and it's been the epitome of a "beater" ever since. I finally gave it a companion in a Hamilton Khaki Auto almost 10 years ago and between the two of them, we've been all over the world and been used in all conditions. Every scuff and ding (and 3 broken crystals!) has a story, and the idea of a beater is very real in my mind. I may reach for other watches for a night out or a special occasion, but it's the beaters that are priceless to me.

    Honestly the beater may be the most important piece in any collection. It’s generally wore the most, and arguably has to do the most. A beater has to be wearable, durable, and stylish at the same time. My beaters are a Casio worldtime, Casioak, and a Seiko solar diver when I want to have driver style on

      @magic804 I have a DW-5300 G-Shock that I bought new in the 90’s and recently restored, I couldn’t bear to mess it up though, sentimental value. I’m working on putting together a G-Shock square metal with a stainless steel Ali-Express kit. I recently saw a picture of one that was VERY worn and has taken on a steam-punk like patina that looked really cool. I’m a mechanic and I usually take my watch off at work, but this one I plan to leave on all the time. Even if I trash the module, I can just replace it.

Indeed, can't go wrong with Seiko (SBDY085), Seiko 5 Sports (SRPE51), Casio (AE-1200 and MTP-M300D), G-Shock (GA-B2100) and Hamilton (H64455533)!!!

    My beater is a timex expidition north titanium automatic. I changed the leather band to an oyster style titanum that it should have come with not leather. The watch case has been surprisingly very hard to scratch. For under $400, I dare any beater listed here. 200m water. Sapphire on both sides. Amazing lume. Date. And the Miota although a cheeper noisy movement still winds itself faster in one direection than all my seiko nh35 or 4 and 6 series movements with bidirectional winding. Its for sure a go to. Thanks Teddy for pointing out other options but im going to stick with my Timex for a little longer.

    Pound for pound the Casio MDR-106 'Duro' is the best watch available today. Classic looking dive watch, very accurate quartz movement, strap monster, very well made. Great around watch at an insane price. With the $100 Seiko a thing of the past, this now is the only option for an analogue watch under $100 IMO.

    bought a used regular quartz 5600 a couple years ago and it just somehow became the only watch I wore without ever really thinking about it. wore it to bed, shower, swimming with the kid, everything. Was a watch that I truly never had to think about, and was digital so I could read it instantly. Calendar never needs updated. Just adjust time every 6 months or so (only ever off by like 30 seconds really), and change it for DST. Gives me day of the week, month, and day of the month plus time with just a glance. Plus a light that I can see in pitch black whenever needed. Rough house all the time with the kiddo, he's smacked it with toys an endless amount of times and I've never even taken a look to make sure it was ok. Recently had to replace the band, also cleaned it realizing it got pretty grimey under the plastic cover. I don't even use half the features on it like timer and alarms, but nice that it has it. It's not a watch that I love, it's just a watch that became apart of me. The only time I ever take it off is gaming on the PC at night, cause I'm super anal when it comes to my gaming space. I've bought a couple other metal band watches since, and I wear them occasionally and for work sometimes. But it's tough for me to not come home and immediately put the 5600 on, simply because I've gotten so used to having it.

      I'm like this with my duro. I only ever take it off at the gym when I need to wrap my wrists. In the past 2.5 years it's probably been on my wrist 99.5% of the time. Like total, I don't take it off for sleep or to shower or at work or anything.

    Wasn’t looking to get into micro brands, but my beater is the BOLDR Venture. Super solid IMO (200m, sapphire, NH35A, titanium case, screw down crown). Nice enough to wear out and about and can also take a beating when I’m working on roofs.

    As a wood shop teacher, these “beater” watches make up the bulk of my collection and many are at the upper end of my price range! Lots of cool watches but I definitely think “utilitarian” watches is a better description than “beater”. After all, I don’t beat on any of my watches but I definitely utilize them for their intent as more of a workers watch. Nice watches but not flashy show stoppers. BTW Teddy, great watch choices! • @martintanz9098
    @martintanz9098 9 месяцев назад +4

    Teddy, I think you and I have a different definition of a beater. As you moved up the price ladder, you seem to have gone from beaters to GADA watches. Certainly watches like the Sinn, Mulhe Glasshutte, or Certina are Gada watches, not beaters. My Gada watches include tge Sinn 104, Seiko Alpinist, Steinhart GMT, Seiko Samurai and Zelos Mako for example. (Probably a few others)
    Imo, a beater is a watch you might wear while doing a dirty job that you might not want to put your nice watch at risk of getting dirty or scratched. So to my mind, you shouldn’t spend more than $100 on a beater that only exists to get beat up and ideally, maybe nothing at all as a lot of us have a beater sitting unloved in a drawer. Thinking about and old Seiko quartz, Timex Ironman, Casio, or citizen eco drive. My beaters are an old Seiko titanium quartz, Citizen Eco drive , old Victorinox Swiss Army watch, plastic Casio digital.

    Love your videos, I purchase a lot of "beater watches", some new some used and try to keep the price to around $100 - I make "tough guy" watch cuff and sell them with a well spec'd watch. It's interesting to me that several of the brands you've presented here have the same Seiko automatic movements I typically find in the watches I purchase at a fraction of the price. I don't see how you beat the aliexpress brands as well as microbrands like Aragon which can be found on the resale market for $100 or less. Of course I do have a timegrapher so I can regulate these watches (now) - I'm always looking for "divers" for the shock and water resistance and, again, am finding super affordable well spec'd watches out there

    Classic beaters for me have been G-Shocks and cheaper Seikos (SKX; Sumo). IMHO the definition of a "beater" is a watch that you can wear it doing manual labor (e.g., building a deck; yardwork) and sports that are hard on watches (cycling; diving) and really not care that much what damage you are inflicting on it.

    Fantastic picks, you covered all of mine! Whenever I don't want to worry about my watch, it's either my 20 year old G-shock, or my Tissot Seastar 40mm. I'd love a titanium Khaki next.

    To me, a beater watch is a watch you can smash with a hammer, shrug your shoulders and say "meh." Followed with chucking it in the bin. If you can do it to a 200€+ watch.. Well.. It just shows the difference of perception about value..

    Overall this is a very interesting video. Most of these watches hit right in the middle of style that I'm interested in.
    I've bought various watches with the intent of making them beater watches. I work on cars, I work in my yard, I do carpenter work and woodworking, I try to take care of my watches but they would be at risk when I'm doing work with my hands. I could not bear to wear even my low priced watches for that use. I bought a very low priced Seiko 5 but still could not bear to wear it as a beater, a Seiko 5 can be a low price but is still a pretty nice watch. I bought a used Casio quartz watch and finally was willing to wear it as a beater. It is a nice enough watch, mine had submariner styling but otherwise was probably similar to the current Casio dive model. At some point I bought a well used Luminox quartz navy seals watch. It was very worn and already beat up so I put it on a cheap NATO and I'm willing to wear it under any condition.

    I've been obsessing over the watch world from the sidelines for a while now but am just not in a position to justify spending 1000s. I thought I'd dip my toes in and just picked up an SSK003 for myself today. As someone who's never really spent any time with a watch on my wrist, I'm obsessed. I can see this being my gateway into collecting and cannot wait to look back in a few years and remind myself of where it all started. Cheers for the great content, Teddy!

    I love my MDV106 "Duro" and this in spite of my right wrist circumference being a mere five and a half inches, the left five and three eighths.
    Yes, it's a big thing but, on its superbly crafted Island Watch beads o' rice bracelet (solid female end links and don't forget that lug to lug on the Duro is really tight for a 44mm watch). Thanks due to whomever it was who made it OK for us womenfolk to wear big watches, I own some tiny, girly pieces but my "premium" watches rarely see wrist time since i bought my blue dial / blue bezel Duro. OK, so it should look like a dinner plate on my tiny wrist, but those wrists aren't cylindrical in shape, they are more like stretched ellipses with a larger flat that makes my bigger watches fit really well, even my rarely worn Explorer 2 GMT.
    Yes, you read that correctly, i favour my £47 Casio over my own somewhat less budget oriented Swiss piece.
    (I owned 34 Casios including 4 G-Shocks last time i counted them, does this make me a naughty old woman? Heck yeah!)😊

    You could argue that every watch I own is on this list. Marathon GSAR, Hamilton Khaki Auto, Marathon Navigator, two g shocks including the 5610, and an old duro I bought when I was first getting into watches to see what the case size felt like. These are the kinds of watches I love wearing. Looking at maybe buying the steel navigator, a mudmaster, and a sinn 556 in the next several years, all of which were also sort of or directly on this list.

    It may only be available through UK retailers, but the Citizen Promaster Tough Super Titanium BN0118-55E Ray Mears Edition is my favorite beater watch and it would place well on this list. More versatile than my G-Shocks (GW-M5610U and GA-B2100C-9AER), classier than many other field watches with the titanium bracelet, practical with Eco-Drive solar charging and quartz accuracy, and tough as nails with 300m of water resistance, a sapphire crystal, and a monobloc case.

Love the way you stay humble and understand that $100-$200 is still a lot to spend on anything right now. Im currently saving for a prx, little late to the party but with a little one to look after and other things to spend money on, its just been one delay after the next 😊 keep up the great work and on a side note, my beater is a ga2100, looks great, hard wearing, has all you need and in jet black it goes with pretty much anything 😊 also love the thought of a more classier looking beater for other occasions. Have a great christmas and happy new year.

    Microbrand Diver: Helm Vanuatu. NH35 movement, ISO6425 compliant, 300m water resistance, fantastic lume, $285. Major brand: Orient Mako or Kannno. In-house automatic, 200m, Under $200. Reach options: A critical characteristic of a beater is that it's priced so that you don't cry too hard when it gets broken, so "reach" beater is an oxymoron. If I break a $1,500 watch while I'm doing rough stuff, I'll have to kill myself.

    I love watches, but there is only one I take with me to any serious trip or journey or to a workshop or for climbing... Casio 5610. its light - you can leave it on sleeping in the tent, it has lime you can read it any time... easy timer for cooking etc.you can change tire, grab the mud under your stucked 4x4, you can loose it or gift it so stranger in Africa, you probably won't be rubber and killed because of this watch :D can't imagine doing this stuff with my loved speedy 3861. For me it should me absolutely perfect, good locking and nice high engineered piece (price range for this is individual, for someone is speedy a beater and Casio - luxury) or cheap and funktional... everything the is compromise I didn't like in principle.

    I say a beater has to have a sapphire crystal. & band not bracelet. IMO a beater is a weekend manual labor watch, that still looks good. Economics are relative, but $1000 watch working on the yard or car doesn’t much qualify. Thanks for what you do Teddy… I do appreciate your mention of hardened steel. I don’t want a beater that looks beaten so that, besides comfort is my reason a beater has to have a strap. My beater is a Seiko Conceptual on sale for $130.

    • @RobLewis3
      @RobLewis3 9 месяцев назад +3

      In general you're right, but there are plastic screen CASIOs like the F91 which make great beaters because of how cheap they are. If I was doing manual labour that's what I'd pick because they're also very small.

    Seperate to my nice watches, I also have a $120 Fossil Skeleton Automatic in all black and silver that runs on a Swiss movement. Stainless and it's about 7 years old now.
    I swim with it, it's covered in blemishes on the steel, shower with it. Bang it off things. It's held up well. I don't live a gentle life and neither has the watch, and it shows.
    Would I do this to my Seiko or Citizens? NOPE. But for this reason, I have a pile of 5 Fossil watches that have truly never given me an issue. Even if stolen. They also seem to hold together very well. One special rare one my wife got me, I've never seen and also can't find it for sale. Don't write off Fossil, basically, is my only notion of this comment. Cheap, yes. Good, also yes. Great for gifts! They (standard editions) use a quality Miyota movement so they arent absolutely trash either.
    My Fossils are closer to my heart than my most expensive pieces. Why? They have my blood, sweat, damage and history beaten into them. Something my luxury units lack almost as a whole.

    Surprised that Orient dive watches are not featured in this video, especially the kamasu with 200m water resistance and sapphire crystal for only a bit more than the seiko 5s. The Mako and Ray lines are also solid for a lower price although the mineral crystal kinda turns me off.
