You’re missing the main purpose of open-back headphones!! They aren’t designed to make you aware of your surroundings-that’s just a side effect. Their main purpose is to deliver a more natural sound by allowing air and sound to flow freely through the ear cups. This design creates a spacious, realistic audio experience, similar to listening to speakers in a room. Additionally, open-back headphones provide a wider soundstage, making it easier to pinpoint the location of individual sounds or instruments in the mix.

To be clear, open back headphones are not intended to let other sounds in.
They are intended to make the audio of your headphones sound more natural, like the sources of audio are coming from the space around you, instead of two small transducers by your ears.
Don't spend big money when you're buying open backs if you only need the transparency for outside sound.
And if it needs to be said, ambient noise passthrough features of sealed headphones do not accomplish what open back headphones do with "moving" the sound away from the transducers.

I have some open back headphones, and the difference in sound quality truly is pretty staggering. The soundstage of them is always super wide, which is just not possible with closed back headphones. You can clearly hear the audio separation in music, and movies are super immersive since the headphones almost sound 3D. I have literally had moments where i got spooked because it sounded like someone was entering my room, but it was just a character in a TV show opening a door. They sound so natural that these sounds really do sound like they are coming from the environment.
But i have to agree that the sound leakage is more of a downside. It's especially annoying when i'm playing video games, because i can clearly hear the fans of my computer.

9:15 This feature very much reminds me of the AKG K1000 "earspeakers", which were basically loud speakers designed to be worn just in front of your ears. Just like the NVM One, it can be listened to with the loudspeakers pointing directly to your ears, but they are ideally designed to be worn with the speakers angled slightly, emulating how speakers are placed in the room. I've had the privilege to test these headphones (they're vintage and pretty hard to drive without proper equipment) and listening to them in an angled fashion is really transformative. It's like I'm listening to speakers in a room.
I'm assuming the NVM One integrated the feature for you to do something similar, but you'll probably only recognize a noticeable improvement in sound if the recording your listening to has a large amount of headroom to begin with, like orchestral tracks or live studio recordings. Of course, you'll need to reposition the headband forward slightly (like you mentioned) to be able to get the effect. Multi-track recordings, which is more common for modern recordings, will probably sound the same, or will probably just sound muffled if you listen to them with the speakers angled.

I think marques misses the point of open back headphones. They are not analog transparency mode. They sound better than closed backs because the sound is not squished into your ears, it floats around your ear so the layering in the sound is much better. Thát is the function of open backs, not transparency.

I've owned them for about 3 weeks now and I have to say they seem much better than Quiet Comfort Ultras with subtle changes in design like individual status lights for each bud, a kind of dimple impression on the pair button and even how it slowly blinks in charging. The fact that they are open is so nice and sounds pretty good (except for low base). You gotta really crank it up in noisy environments though.

Open back reference headphones are for sound staging and balance, not for noise transparency. Link buds, mf5, etc are not “open backs” in the same way as hd650s/600s, akg 702s, or other comparable cans. It is usually NOT a selling point for open backs to be used in the workplace or cohabited spaces because sound will leak out at high volumes and potentially disturb coworkers and people around you (especially for editing where you’re likely re-listening to chunks of audio multiple times repetitively).
Btw - yes i guess it’s easier to hear through open backs then noise cancelled headphones obviously, but you must be editing audio at a very low volume for people to just come up to you and start a conversation without needing to get your attention.

One good reason to go with headphones that don’t physically isolate is comfort. Things like transparency mode and noise canceling put constant pressure on your ear drums… the only tool they have to simulate either quiet or the sound around you is blasting your ear with noise (even if it’s inverted so as to cancel out perceived sound). Personally, I find it fatiguing; a few minutes of using the newest airpods in a noisy environment makes me feel like I’m climbing in a pressurized airplane cabin.
Having tinnitus makes it worse. It feels very weird to have “silence” trigger ringing in your ear.

As others have said, open backs are all about letting the drivers move freely which gives better soundstage. My pair of $70 open back headphones has vastly better soundstage than anything I tried up until about $250 - $300 in closed backs. They bleed, I can hear some outside noise, but their function is drivers moving freely, not letting outside noise in.

    1. Even with transparency mode on your regular earphones, the person who approaches you for asking how many sets you have etc, will not be knowing you have transparency mode on and will still have to signal/tap you to make sure u can hear what they're saying
    2. The clip style grip won't make you feel like you are clogging your earphones with sweat, and in the case that you are getting them dirty, you won't have to worry much because you're not getting your primary ones dirty

FYI for those of you who have a hard time with ear buds staying in your ears. I've tried like 10 different brands and no luck. I got the nothing open ear ones and they've been great! Very comfortable, great battery life, good sound quality. The design makes it so they don't fall of your head and the band is flexible and soft. The drivers do float in front of your ear and can wiggle but they've never touched my ear while I'm being active. I've tried the Beats version that does have an earbud seal but these have been more comfortable. Only gripe is that in loud environments they don't get loud enough to combat the external noise. But it's fine in most cases.
